Parts of speech in the English language unfortunately contain many irregularities and therefore require a great deal of memorization. A basic sentence need only contain a subject and verb. Nouns, one of the most common parts of speech, can be common, proper, compound, abstract, or collective. Adjectives modify the noun and can also be used to compare things, while indefinite or definite articles are used to refer to something. Verbs may be transitive or intransitive and can also be changed into an adverb. Gerunds, pronouns, prepositions, and conjunctions are other parts of speech that are used to form sentences.
