This unit has enabled me to develop more of an understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of using authentic materials, such as newspapers, magazines and course books, and created materials, such as pictures, worksheets, role play prompt cards and Gap-filling exercises for activities in the engage, study and activate stages of ESOL lessons. I have learnt that sometimes course books and other authentic materials need to be omitted, replaced, supplemented with other materials or adapted to meet the requirements of lessons, by using more suitable created materials, which can be graded to the level of ability more easily and accurately, so that learners needs can be more easily, thoroughly and accurately assessed and met, so that learners' objectives and the aims of lessons can be met more easily and so that learners can achieve learning more easily with created materials which can be more targeted to the aims of teachers and the needs of learners.I have learnt that using course books which at first need to be analysed for such things to see if they are user friendly, cheap enough, suitable for the level of ability and requirements of learners and teachers, and so on, can provide a tried and tested syllabus, can save teachers a lot of work and time with planning lessons and not having to design a lot of course materials, which can make teaching and learning more effective.
