The unit was densely packed with information, and is central for language learning. Various methods were presented at the beginning, but I missed any mention of the Natural Approach method, as pioneered by Krashen and Terrell (it's in Wikipedia). This involves students listening to two native- speaker teachers, with props at times, talking in the language to be learned, with students remaining listeners for as long as possible. This is the core, supposedly, of how children learn. This unit agrees that the best methods, including ESA, attempt to replicate natural learning.To be sure, students expect to speak at some stage, but need not be forced to do so. The unit was helpful in showing ways to draw students into communicative situations.
