The Past Tenses - Past Simple - Mill Drill Activity

This video is part of our series on the past tenses in English. We start off the series with the past simple tense. In this video, we show you how to execute a mill drill activity for this tense. Here, the teacher provides the students with a survey or questionnaire with statements in the past simple tense. The students then go around the classroom and ask other students about their past experiences.

Below you can read feedback from an ITTT graduate regarding one section of their online TEFL certification course. Each of our online courses is broken down into concise units that focus on specific areas of English language teaching. This convenient, highly structured design means that you can quickly get to grips with each section before moving onto the next.

I found this section surrounding the reported speech a bit difficult as some of the reported sentences don't match what we say in American English. I just find that with these rules, there are too many exceptions for the chart in the text to be continually helpful. I would like to see how this model works with students in a classroom setting. This unit discusses the importance of modals, passive voice and phrasal verbs. Modals are used before other verbs to add meaning to the main verb. Passive voice is used to put focus on the subject rather than the agent of the sentence. Phrasal verbs are verbs that consist of a verb plus one or two particles used to convey a different meaning.
