I have become aware through this lesson how important it is to take control of the class. This means to take control in all roles as a teacher and how important it is to balance these roles to accommodate all types of learners. I also became aware of the different levels of learning and what each level entails. I found the sections on teacher types to be interesting. It provided me with the opportunity to evaluate my own teaching styles. I also think I will be able to adapt my teaching style to adapt fit the lesson more appropriately. I

Unit 1 covered what it takes to be a good teacher and a good learner. It is important that we understand all of the parts we may encounter during one class session. We need to be able to assess our students while remaining connected to their needs. Students need to be able to talk with us without feeling unsafe and should be able to see their progress to spur motivation. Therefore, we need to be almost chameleon like throughout our lessons never completely losing control of the class but being able to give control away to the students so they may demonstrate their abilities. Their desire to learn should be praised and we should motivate those who are learning English because they are forced, try to make them see that it is a good thing. Understanding our roles makes it easier to understand our students and allows us to be more aware of student needs.

Having covered the qualities and characteristics of a good teacher and learner, the model of class interactions and their traits was presented with more clarity - making me more confident. The ladder of language levels with clearly explained motivations, enabled me to think through potential soon-to-come cases I will be handling! Feeling great! There isn't much to say about this unit. It was just an introduction. As far as introductions go this one wasn't bad-short and straight to the point. The introduction to the different terms was useful, the rest not as much. Teachers and students need to have a good rapport and be able to communicate with each other - students asking questions, teachers observing when a student is struggling. A teacher has many roles and must switch fluently between the roles. Learners all have different levels of ability, different reasons for taking the class and differing motivations to learn.

Unit 001 went over the characteristics of both a good teacher and learner. A good teacher must be enthusiastic, sensitive, motivated, and patient; while a good student must remain motivated, willing to accept mistakes, and be willing to ask questions. A brief overview was given on the different levels for students, and the separate shortcoming and highlights. I have gained an understanding of the characteristics of both of these parties, and how they must cooperate for a successful classroom environment.

This unit dealt with the qualities, good and bad, of both teachers and students. Of particular interest was the various roles that a teacher may play in the classroom, in order to show that all these roles have a time and a place for use. It also gave an overview of the different learning levels of students of a foreign language, providing both its own scale and that of the
european Union. These levels are important as they can be used to create a general framework and approach for a course that will be more accurately tailored to the needs and knowledge of the learners present. Other topics included characteristics of learners at various age levels and basic dos and don'ts (e.g. the necessity of cultural awareness, not over-helping the students as they try to develop an independent mastery of the language).
I felt that this unit gave me a more structured understanding the the various kinds of language learners and their differences one from another.

This unit begins by establishing what is usually considered the qualities of a good teacher. Qualities such as patience and kindness, knowledge of subject material, and being able to get along with their students while providing constructive criticism, etc. The unit goers on to detail the various roles that a teacher may take on during a lesson. roles such as Manager, Facilitator, Organizer, Participant, ect. Each role has it's place in the classroom and is important for moving the class along while meeting the learning needs of all the students. Next the unit describes the various types of students a ESL teacher may encounter and their characteristics. These include
children of about 3-7 years, 8-13 years, 14-18 years, and adults. children often have low degrees of experience with English, shorter attention spans, and less life-experience to color their expectations. Depending on age they can be very motivated and interested or detached and distracted. Adults are often more likely to be in an ESL class by choice and are usually more motivated and interested. They may have some experience with English, but this varies greatly. Most importantly, adults life-experience is certain to color their behavior and expectations of the teacher in the classroom. Lastly, the unit gives a breakdown of the levels of language experience that are common to all students of English as a foreign language. Beginners have little to no experience with English, Elementary learners can use basic vocabulary and sentence structures, but have a limited range of topics. Pre-intermediate students have a wider vocabulary than elementary and can usually discuss a range of topics while lacking fluency. Intermediate learners still lack true fluency, but can discuss a wide range of topics with a relatively large vocabulary while making fewer mistakes. Upper-intermediate learners can discuss most topics with a large vocabulary while making next to no mistakes. Finally, Advanced students have a generally accepted mastery of vocabulary, grammar, and topics which allows them to study the subtle intricacies of the English language.

Unit 1 clarified for me the most important differences a teacher of a foreign language will likely encounter in teaching people of different ages. I believe these are aspects of different age that I may have, in one way or another, been able to discern after finishing more of this course, but the information presented in unit 1 did this for me from the start. Furthermore, the roles of the teacher that were given in this unit was helpful because, as it seems, a teacher of a foreign language will almost certainly have to operate as each one of the roles at one time or another.

All question content is provocative and stimulating. Section 15 - 20 provided greater challenge and potential for growth. Earlier sections are timely and targeted effectively for my learning and absorption of the course content. In particular, questions 8 to 12 helped to ensure a stronger understanding of the different levels of learning a student could be at. Questions 1 to 5 i felt provided me with a good opportunity to fully understand the different teaching styles.

This unit was interesting because it provided a clear and concise listing of the responsibilities and roles of both teachers and learners. It addressed the general expectations and capabilities for learners, something I personally found quite useful as I frequently heard the terms but could not match those terms to a specific ability level. I also found the discussion of student motivational factors as related to age quite useful at my current experience in teaching and reflections on my future career. While some parts of the unit seemed basic and self explanitory, it was overall quite useful, interesting, and well written.

The relationship between the teacher and student is complex, and each party has a roll to fulfill. A good teacher should be patient, dedicated to teaching, invested in the success of their students, and able to engage and teach students through a variety of methods, in which the teacher may act as a manager/assessor, prompter/facilitator, participant, model, etc. A good learner should ideally be highly self-motivated and willing to listen, ask questions, reflect on mistakes, and constantly practice speaking the language. That said, adult and child learners have different characteristics which can influence the way a teacher interacts with them: adult learners tend to have more learning/classroom experience and are generally learning English by choice and therefore are more motivated, although possibly more self-conscious about making mistakes, while
young learners may be more difficult to control in the classroom but absorb the English language more effectively.

Basic roles played by the participants in the class, including the various roles of the teacher, are covered in this lesson. I feel the material matches my experience. I particularly agree that a teacher should be able to transition smoothly between the various roles and not use just one teaching style. For example, a pure lecture-based approach wouldn't be as effective as a lecture, and a conversation prompt, some feedback, some private coaching during a class activity, followed by a game for review.

The unit has helped me recognize the most important qualities of a good teacher and how to best motivate and help my students learn. It also taught me a lot about the differences among different levels of students. For instance, adult learners tend to be more nervous and self-conscious but more motivated to learn while younger students are less nervous but more easily distracted. Keeping this in mind will help me to tailor lessons to the specific student.

The first unit was good at introducing and learning about the different roles a teacher will have during a lesson and the reasons for these. A good teacher will be active and aware of their students, and not just have one particular role for the duration of the lesson, but rather change their methods of teaching throughout to keep students engaged. The unit also taught about the learners and how to be a 'good learner' this was useful because I learnt some reasons why students make lack motivation, or feel discouraged or nervous about using the English language, and how to get around these issues and motivate students more.

This unit is about what it means to be a good teacher, different ways in which teachers teach, and learners encountered while teaching. Because there is no one way to be a good teacher, it's important to understand what
works for you as a teacher and what is reciprocated by the learners. Different learners learn different ways as different teachers teach different ways, so finding a balance between teacher and learner must happen to keep a lesson enjoyable and effective.
I feel that I have learnt how to approach teaching from different styles. Being an active participant as a teach will not always work for a given lesson, but it's okay because there will be another way to teach it. I've also learnt that since not every student learns at the same pace or in the same way, you need to be observant to understand how best to motivate the learner as to prevent them from falling behind and/or losing interest in the subject.

With regard to the teacher role after mentioning several points to what makes a good teacher (e.g. being kind and patient; having a good knowledge of the subject; motivating students; involving all students equally...) the Unit focuses on the role of the teacher in the classroom. It point down 9 main roles the teacher may have in one time or another in the classroom: manager, organizer, assessor, prompter, participant, tutor, resource, model observer. I think that it is important to take into account all these roles when planning a lesson, as it allows teachers to cover a wide range of activities from which the students will benefit.
As regards the good learners, some of the qualities and attitudes that would help them in their learning process are: listen carefully to the teacher and classmates, ask questions without fear, accept error correction, be motivated, experiment with language, think about their leaning process and methods. On the account of the teacher, there are several factors concerning the learners that they have to bear in mind when planning a lesson, such as the age of the students, their previous learning experience, their level nervousness (higher or lower depending on their fear of loosing the face), their language awareness (that may lead to comparisons between L1 and L2 not always helpful), their behavior problems (
children have lower attention span than adults).
Personally, I feel that this Unit has made me more aware of aspects that, as an English teacher, I should take into account on a daily basis.
A very interesting one is motivation. I teach English to young learner, who need to attend classes without them having any choice. Sometimes their motivation to learn isn't that high especially when it comes to learning new grammar rules or a new list of vocabulary. Therefore, what would make of me a good teacher would be to find ways to motivate them by planning my lessons in a fun, interesting and interactive way taking into consideration all of the teacher roles mentioned in the unit. I have learned what a good teacher will do, and the different teaching methods that can be used. I also learned that I need to be aware of how my corrections in class may make the student feel. Choosing words to correct a student must be done delicately as to not embarrass or hurt the feelings of the student. After finishing this unit ,I have learnt a lot about how to be a really good teacher,and what should a teacher do during the class . And we should help the student to be a good learner. We should teach different students in different ways based on their level and age . From this unit, I obtained a better understanding on the differences between an adult learner and a young learner. This unit was a good introduction to the levels of learners I may encounter and several different techniques I can employ in these potential learning environments. I am currently a middle school substitute teacher and have personal experience managing an unruly class. The middle school students I
work with are usually between 11-13 yrs old and struggle when put into small groups because they stray off task. When I am a long term sub, I separate students who distract each other and spread out students with high motivation levels in hopes of inspiring their neighbors in small group discussions.
I had never thought about the learning behavior of middle school students as a function of their age until this unit. I always just thought the
kids in my particular school were just unruly. This unit has made me more aware that older students may be a better fit for me because they have a higher motivation to learn and a better ability to focus. I can yell really loud at my middle schoolers when I need to settle them down and refocus, but I would prefer to create engaging lessons to help learners meet their individual English-learning goals. Having travelled extensively and attended university in three different english speaking countries, my traveling experiences may be related easier to an older group as well because they are more likely to share my experiences or be eager to travel in English speaking countries.

This unit has taught me a lot about the variety of roles a teacher might play, not just the classroom controller. The teacher really has a lot of responsibility to educate the students and present the material, but also to encourage the progression of the student and keep try of a student's strengths and weaknesses. Basically the teacher should be doing much more than simply presenting the material that can be found in a book! The introduction of learning differences between levels and ages is also interesting, especially considering motivation. Many times
children do not have high levels of motivation because they don't understand the benefits of learning, so it is important for the teacher to help students learn without making it seem like a chore.

I have learned what makes a good teacher and what makes a good learner. A teacher should be patient and helpful, organized and have knowledge about the subject. A good learner should be open minded and have willingness to learn and ask questions. I have also learned that a teacher has different roles in the classroom, depending on activities and situations. For example a teacher should be manager or controller in some situation and more relaxed in others.

From this lesson I learned what it makes a good teacher:
1. He/she must be patient. It is extremely important when teaching in order not to get frustrated when students have difficulties in learning or in case of unmotivated students the teacher needs to be patient trying to encourage the them and engage them in the lesson.
2. The ability to create a good student-teacher relationship is also one of the most important qualities a good teacher must have. This is because a teacher is often a model for his/her students and a bad relationship between them may influence the learning process.
3. Another important quality is the ability of the teacher to encourage students. Students are common to lose heart in learning a new language because they find it very difficult.
4. Being able to give fun and interesting lessons is important too. A boring lesson is likely to be a disaster for both teacher and students. A student not interested in the lesson will easily get distracted and won?t pay attention to the lesson, which means NOT LEARNING.
5. Last but not least quality a good teacher must have is being able to correct the student without offending him/her. Students are very different from each other and some can be very sensitive and not really ready to accept corrections or failures.
I also learned that even if in the last years the teaching methods prefer learner-centered classes but it is also important for the teacher to participate in these lessons, they just have to choose the right role in these interactions so the students can learn as much as possible from it and the learning experience will be both enjoyable and effective at the same time.
I also learned that different age groups have different ways of learning languages and both the adults and the
young learners have their own behaviour patterns, therefore a good teacher have to adapt their lesson plans and activities knowing these differences, so the students are motivated and they will absorb and learn as much as possible. This is to be considered also when a teacher has different classes, or even in the same class, with students from different culture background.
Summarizing it all with less textbook words and this is what I always try to achieve>
a good teacher and a good learner has the same goal: getting to know and use a language in a way that is fun, satisfying and effective so the students can leave the class with a smile and they are happy to use the knowledge they obtained from their competent teachers.

A good teacher is one who
works with the class, encouraging students to learn and apply what they have studied. He gives many examples and helps students along when they need it, and guides them through their training, using their own level of motivation to push them along, whether it is to learn the new language for traveling, work, studies, or polyglotism. The teacher needs to know how to balance out his delivery of the materials to the students, and allowing the students to have time for their own interaction and practice with the materials. Ie, it can't all be talk from the teacher for the whole class. The teacher needs to understand the traits of a good teacher, and essentially know what the role of the teacher is, while being charismatic with the students. And the teacher needs to know the different gradations of teaching English, and not use a level inappropriate for his targeted class.

I really like this first unit. It shows a lot about the tasks, roles and responsabilities of a teacher. It is also very interesting to read about the different targets and their various expectations, behavior and so on. This unit highlight the fact that a teacher has to motivate the students at anytime, give advice and help the students. I think it is really important to think first about the target and to prepare the class according to it. The teacher has to adapt to the students and has to be flexible. Furthermore, I think it is interesting to interact with the students and also manage the class according to what they like for them to keep their motivation. I learnt a lot of information in this unit regarding the relationship between the teacher and the students. I learnt as well how to be a good teacher. This unit gave me so many clues.

I learned unit 1 about teachers and learner. Teacher and students has roles and responsibilities. I think the best teacher should know student?s weaknesses and encourage to students. Teacher should pay attention even student?s little part. Another is that good teacher should have good rapport and interaction with their friends. That is very important part. When students come to academy, they have study hard. But more important is that rapport. Most students are interested in playing with their friends.
Next teacher has various the roles. Teacher has manager and controller of part. When students do activity as part of a group in classroom, teacher should give explanation to students. Teacher has organizer of role. Students need instructions continually and should get feedback. Teacher has assessor of role. Teacher has to let students correct English and students can get evaluation and correction. Teacher has prompter of role. Teacher should deal sensitivity and encouragement to students. Teacher has role of participant and tutor. Students need some guidance and support so tutor of role is important. When students need some help or they have interruption, interference and temptation, the teacher can help them. That is role of facilitator. Teacher has role of observer of monitor. When teachers teach, they can use mime, gesture for effective lesson.
Next I learned good learner. I think the best learners are that they should get acceptance of error correction. Because learners can improve ability of English and can raise their qualities. Adult and
children has differences, when they study English. They have difference of age, learning experience and motivation. Adult have various experience about history of success and failure. Also adult already know many words and grammar of a foreign languages. So when teachers teach to adult, they should carefully. The other side children want to feel interest. So teacher can use games, singing and drawing. They have difference of nervousness, when they ask question to teacher. They have difference of behavior problems, best problem is attention span. So teacher has to teach discipline to children continually.
There are language levels. There are beginners, elementary, pre intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate and advanced. Pre intermediate can understand variety of topics but they cannot depth language awareness. Intermediate has limited vocabulary.
I think teacher should be carefully each level and should make environment of lesson. ",

I found that after reading through the content of this unit I gained a general understanding of the relationship between student and teacher. What I found most interesting was the different roles of a teacher and the various characteristics of a good teacher and a good learner. This is something I will reflect upon a lot. It was very useful for me to learn the roles of teachers. How much it is important to pay attention to all qualities and roles of teachers. For me only one aspect stayed unclear when you carry out a lesson how much time you should consider for being a controler, an observer, a tutor, a facilitator. I learned the different stages of what it means to be a kind and passionate teacher along with the different levels of what it means to be a learner. One of the new and interesting things that I also learned was the classification systems that the Europeans have. Overall I felt that I learned something valuable from Unit 1.

Wow, the English language can be very complicated! There are so many intricate parts even to the most basic of sentences! Understanding each part really helps to be able to share why a particular word is used in a particular way. In school noun, verbs and adjectives were all that was focused on, I couldn't imagine grasping all of this as an 8 year old.

Well, this unit was good but most of it I already knew for I've taught it for quite a while. However, I believe knowledge is never enough and it is always good to review and practice grammar points in order to discover new interesting, creative and fun ways to teach them. Portuguese grammar is strongly required in Brazil which, I believe, makes things easier for

This unit taught about the different parts of speech. I learned the specific types of nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs, as well as, articles, prepositions, gerunds, and pronouns. I found the transitive and intransitive types of verbs and definite and indefinite articles to be particularly interesting and complex. I also enjoyed learning about the basic forms of prepositions which are often overlooked in basic grammar.

The content of this unit examined grammar and the parts of speech that are used to form a sentence. I learned that each word in a sentence can be classified according to its purpose and the meaning it adds. The material covered nouns, adjectives, articles, verbs, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns, prepositions and conjunctions. This unit was very helpful to me because it really sharpened my understanding of grammar. I already had a good understanding of the proper use of grammar and this unit helped to further my understanding. This will definitely help me to explain the parts of speech to my future students. I look forward to going into more detail on grammar in future units.

Unit 2 was an overview of grammar, which is good for someone like me who is a native speaker of English. Sometimes, the other English teachers and I joke that we look stupid in front of our students because we'll know whether something is wrong or right based on how it sounds, but we can't say the rules for why. As an English teacher in a foreign country, its important for me to continue to review the parts of speech and the rules that dictate how and why we use them the way we do.

Parts of speech explains how the word is used in a sentence. I think it's rather important to understand how a sentence is composed correctly. It's a basic grammar lesson all English learner must go through. I felt that I had a refreshed course on Grammar 101. This unit goes into detail about the different parts of speech, how to compose and structure basic and more complex sentences, with an awareness of when and where to use certain words. Parts of speech include nouns, verbs, pronouns, adverbs, adjectives, prepositions, gerunds etc - these can then be broken down further depending on their context and tense. Adjectives of Comparisons usually add 'er' where that is the proper ending. Adjectives of Superlative usually add 'est'. There are adjectives that change form completely in the superlative because the rule is that more than 3 syllables is to difficult to pronounce. (I wish the
spanish language felt the same way-lol)

The content of this unit was about grammar and the parts of speech, including: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, articles, pronouns, conjunctions/prepositions and gerunds. As a native speaker, grammar comes naturally to me, but until I studied this unit, when it came to explaining why the English language is structured the way it is, I found it difficult to express. This unit has improved my understanding of the structure of grammar and the reasons behind it. I feel more confident about facing grammar lessons with my students in the future.

In this unit I learned in depth the parts of speech. I was able to have a better understanding and grasp of what each part of speech does. Through this unit I have learned ways to make teaching grammar to my current students much easier. Initially, I had difficulty with explaining things like comparative adjectives and superlative adjectives, but this lesson has made it much clearer for me. I found this unit to be repeat her challenging. I found it challenging because it dealt with a lot of in detail terminology and copious of different exceptions which confused me a great deal. The density of information for one unit seemed for me to be too much but all essential knowledge non the less. Unit two illustrated definitions and examples of parts of speech. The nine parts of speech are: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, prepositions, articles and interjections. Also, more specific parts were examined such as personal pronouns, definite and indefinite articles, countable and uncountable nouns, proper nouns, prepositions of place and gerunds. as you know grammar is the most challenging factor that teachers have been judged by it.

I find that this unit has been highly useful in order to review the english grammar and the parts of speech. In fact, native speakers and people that live abroad and use English as a second language tend to not think about these rules. They have learned the language automatically in their daily life like for example, listening to people and watching tv or advertisements around the streets etc... Especially native speakers who have been learning English as their first language have a completely different point of view compared to a foreigner and since this one often gets confused with his native language and tends to translate in a literal way. Because of that, I have found the section about sentence structure quite useful in order to make students avoid this mistake. In my opionion, a skilled teacher can assist their students to think in their own language as little as possible and try to make them absorb the English Grammer perfectly step by step, without giving many translations.

I found the unit well structured. I learned that I never really learned English grammar in detail while studying. I feel like the grammar rules and parts of speech could be broken down into more units.
In addition, I found that the terminology was different in the
video which makes things slightly confusing. I recommend that the Video's follow the same structure and terminology.

The study of parts of sentences is extremely tedious. Each time I study the subject, I focus on another aspect; this time my focus was on comparing gerunds with present participles. Perhaps when teaching students this information, it would be more useful to briefly touch on each topic several times instead of spending much time once on the topics

Unit 2 was a general review of the parts of speech used in English. Examples of exceptions were given, more to point out that there are always exceptions than to attempt to make an exhaustive list. It was pointed out that some parts of speech of English are often confused by speakers of other languages, and that creative activities can make learning how to use parts of speech correctly can make the otherwise tedious method of simply memorizing certain aspects of the language more fun. More rarely described parts of the language were adequately explained, such as what a gerund is, and how one should be used in a sentence. I thought the section trying to describe where in the sentence adverbs should go, and the general rules that could be
applied to help a student learn this was very interesting. I had not so seriously considered the ramifications of placing the adverb

This unit perfectly coincided with a lesson taught in the previous unit: in order to be an effective teacher one must have mastery of the subject which they are teaching.
The ten parts of speech that were touched upon throughout this unit have many components that make up each of them. As a college graduate who was required to write a myriad of research papers, I would have liked to believe that I had a proverbial strangle hold on the English language. However, Unit 2 gave me a necessary refresher course on the mechanics of the English language and the vocabulary attributed to specific parts of speech.
As I previously stated, this Unit perfectly coincided with a lesson taught in Unit 1: In order to be the most effective teacher possible, one must have mastery of the subject which they are teaching. While I have completed Unit 2, it will not get tucked away in the back of my notebook. This Unit will become more and more valuable as I move closer to my goal of teaching English abroad, and I will review it on a daily basis to ensure mastery of the subject I intend to teach.

This unit taught me about the grammatical forms that make up the English language, including grammatical rules and their many exceptions. Despite training as Speech Language Pathologist and learning a lot of English grammar during my
degree, I had forgotten much of it, particularly the different types of each of the different grammatical forms: adjectives (comparatives, superlatives), articles (definite, indefinite and the zero article rule), verbs (transitive, intransitive, infinitives and auxilliary verbs), pronouns (personal, possessive, reflexive and relative).
The unit made me take a closer look at the individual words that make up a sentences and the specific reasons why those words are placed in that order.
