Unit 1 introduces many facts on what it is to be a good teacher and what it is to be a good learner. Some observations that resonated with me were that as a teacher it is fundamentally important to teach correct grammar. Students, especially those who are not as familiar with English, may not be able to recognize if the teacher has made a mistake or not. Instilling small errors into a younger demographic's classroom could be cataclysmic in terms of those students furthering their English skills. Also, in terms of teaching older students it is important not to do all the
work for them. The older the student the more responsible they should be for their own learning. It is the teacher's
job to help these students find inspiration and motivation.

A step by step breakdown of what each factor variable constitutes, the source of the factor and the subsequent consequences. Once we have understood the basic human behavior to teach and to learn, eliminating undesirable learning outcomes becomes easy. The content in unit one provided terminology and structure to information previously perceived as common sense.

This unit was the first of the entire course, so I didn't know exactly what to expect. It was easy to read through, and I thought it was very interesting. There was a good structure in the unit, which I can really appreciate. I feel like now I know what I can expect from my students, and what they can expect from me. I have learnt that there are different roles to the teacher, and when and how it should take place.
Also, one of the most important things is, what makes a good teacher to my mind the if I put them in order they would be like the following: 1. A good teacher should love his
job and love his students. 2. A good teacher should make his class interesting and fun to be in. 3.A good teacher should be able to correct his students without offending them. 4. A good teacher should be able to maintain a good balance between the talkative ones and the quiet ones in his class. Also, to guarantee an equal time of practice between them.
In addition to that, The difference between the Adults and the YL was very clear. Who's self motivated and who have to be in the class. You need to take in consideration that YLs have a short concentration span. and they love to learn by playing games.
How to categorize your students according their levels and abilities and what you expect from each level to do.
At the End, no matter how good is the teacher, without a good learner it will be very difficult to achieve the goal.

Unit: Teachers and Learners
This unit covers what it takes to be a good teacher and what makes a good learner. A teacher needs to be able to help the students learn the language for themselves and not just stand in front of the class talking and spoon feeding everything to them. The students all have different reasons for learning English and they all (even in the same classroom) have different levels of proficiency with the language so the teacher must recognize what each individual student needs the most help with and be able to
work with them. A teacher must be someone the students can feel comfortable with. He/She cannot be too mean or too strict. You don't want your students to feel afraid to ask you questions or to lose the motivation for learning. Learning can be done in a variety of fun and interesting ways. Never insult or offend your students in any way. It will only cause them to close themselves off from you. Make learning the language a fun and interesting experience for all of your students equally. To do this a teacher must be able to be a great organizer.
What I have learned from this unit is that the teachers I always looked up to and was inspired by, when I was in school, must have followed a formula identical to that shown in Unit 1. If I can be the teacher described in Unit 1 then my students, as I was when I was in school, will be inspired to learn in and out of the classroom and have great fun doing so. Every student is different so be careful to know your students individually and what each one needs help with and what each one wants out of the lessons. Make sure your students know you care about their learning progress and are aware of their efforts individually and equally.

I acquired general information about teachers and their roles is the classroom and information about students and their levels. I learned the international standards classifying the levels of English proficiency. Also I received some information about why people want to learn English in general. young learners of different categories were interesting. I leared the importance of the role as a teacher and how it effects students. The teacher/student relationship is is key to a successful learning experience. The teacher should know when to take the dominant role, as well as step back to allow the students to build confidence in their skills as well. This unit provided an overview of teachers and students. It gave examples of qualities that good teachers shared, and qualities that good students shared. I believe that to have a successful class it takes a combination of good teacher and student qualities. The unit also covered all of the rolls that teachers filled. I was actually a bit surprised that there were so many. Each role was distinct, but there was a bit of an overlap here and there, for example, the prompter and tutor roles were similar (although that of the tutor is a bit more personable and focused more on guidance and support). In thinking back of my own educational experiences, some of my best teachers, those that made a lasting impact, were able to step in to multiple roles with ease. Feel that the unit provided me a good overview of the basics in order to prepare me for the lessons to com.

This unit also breaks down the kinds of students that are to be expected in the EFL classroom setting, by age group, as well as proficiency. Overall, what I have come to learn from this unit is that the teacher will have a wide variety of situations that would arise in their EFL career, for which planning is an absolute necessity.

This unit provides an overview of the different characteristics/roles of a teacher and that of the learners they may have in class. It gives ideas of what makes a good teacher and then discusses separate and distinct roles they may take on based on the
Type of activity and goal of the students they are teaching. It displayed what makes a good learner and the differences we would see in the varying ages of learners. It also provided different levels of language learning to assess each student on as well as possible reasons for why students are motivated to learn another language. This seemed like a very basic lesson, but it was actually a good reminder that teaching is less about the teacher and much better reflected in the learning of the students. The most important lesson I learned is that not all students will be equally motivated to learn while they are in the classroom, but all students should still be involved equally in the discussions and learning of the material.

Before reading this unit I knew that a classroom teacher has several roles to play, but I was not clear as to what they all were. I like the concept that a classroom needs to be a mixed balance of student-centered activities as well as teacher-centered, depending on the activity. As a current student teacher I see myself participating in all the classroom teacher roles with the different activities that I implement day to day in my classroom. Teacher and students need to
work together as a team, but students cannot self-lead all the time. As a teacher it is our responsibility to be able to manage the class and its functions appropriately. Being an organized teacher is crucial in the education world. If a teacher is not organized and prepared the students interest and desire to learn will diminish; also being organized helps reduce stress that can come with being an educator. Being an assessor is also a very important role. I believe in formative and summative
assessment. A teacher does not need to have summative assessments everyday, but instead can utilize the information gathered from formative assessments to help
Guide future lessons to help enhance student learning. Prompting is probably one of my favorite things to do as a teacher. I enjoy seeing students dig deeper into their ideas and expanding on them. When a teacher acts as a participant with the class I think this builds a greater relationship with the students. They see that the teacher can come down to their level and learn along side with them, which is motivating and encouraging to them. As a teacher I believe it?s an important responsibility that we are accessible to help tutor students if the need arises. Also taking into consideration that we need to time manage any tutoring that we may take on. Being a resource facilitator is exciting because it gives me the opportunity to create an activity for the students and then see them progress through it themselves. Seeing student?s knowledge and creativity blossom is an inspiring thing. I also believe that no matter what kind of learner the students are, modeling for them is one of the best ways to teach. Especially teaching abroad, modeling can help minimize the language barrier.
Before reading this unit I did not realize that
children ages 8-12 would have the best reception to learning English. This age group is the one that I most desire to teach.

A good teacher should be enthusiastic about the subject they teach so as to communicate why the subject is important. He/she should be patient so that learners feel relaxed and comfortable. A good teacher should be able to provide correction and feedback in a positive manner so that students will not be afraid to make mistakes. A good teacher should prompt students to become more involved when necessary so that all can benefit from the lesson. A good teacher should be lively and able to motivate students to participate and increase their learning.
A good learner should be motivated and want to learn. He/she should be willing to ask questions and actively participate in the learning activities. A good learner will willing to take risks using language and accept correction and re-direction if necessary. As a teacher I find that the most important quality of a good learner is the desire to learn. I?m currently in a situation where the majority of the students aren?t particularly interested in learning about the content I am there to teach. And from that one key lacking feature all manner of classroom management problems emerge.
Differences in young and adult learners including the following:
(1) Motivation ? adult learners may have made the choice to learn English, while
young learners might have had the choice for them to learn English made by someone else
(2) Self-consciousness ? adult learners may be more self-conscious and less willing to jump in for fear of making mistakes, whereas younger learners may be more willing to participate
(3) Behavior issues ? young learners can often pose behavior issues when they become bored or frustrated. They typically need more frequent change in activities to keep them involved.
(4) Life experience ? Adult learners with greater life and language experience will bring with them the potential for more interesting communication.",

I enjoyed reviewing the different roles of a teacher and how they must wear 'many many hats at once'. Reading through the various roles is a reminder of how important it is to have a plan going into the lesson but yet also be keenly aware and perceptive of things going on during the class time. The unit gave a general overview of the aspects of a good teacher and a consise listing and brief description of the roles the teacher will perform. Also covered were the desired characteristics/qualities of a good learner and how they might be observed depending on the age/maturity of the student. Also covered were several ways for the teacher to determine the level at which a particular student has mastered English. This information will be extremely important in deciding what English class to place the student.
I have done some teaching over the past 30 years and was greatful to be reminded of the basis qualities of a good teacher and a good student. It was gratifying to be reminded that a teacher doesn't have to be doing all the teaching nor should they be. Well thought out lessons include the students as a dynamic part of the classroom. I am eagerly anticipating the remainder of the class.

What I feel I've learned from this unit is the mere fact of basics: levels of a students knowledge in a language, ways teachers are categorized etc. There is yet so much to learn, but this first unit puts in perspective that these are the things teachers should be aware about their students and should always keep their eyes and ears open to change, to students asking questions consistently as well as the positives and negatives that can come about within a classroom session.

I feel this unit has made it very clear what is required from a teacher - it should not just be about wanting to teach, but should be more about wanting to watch your students learn. I believe the main priority of a teacher should be to make sure all his or her students are learning at the correct pace for them, and in a way they feel comfortable with, and are not afraid to ask for help if they become unstuck. A teacher should know how to deal with different types of learners - whether this is down to age-group, or down to a particular students motivation, and be prepared that not all classes are going to be the same. If the teacher can stay enthusiastic and motivated, there should be no reason why the student doesn't follow suit.

This is a good introductory unit. I liked that Unit 1 briefly described the different roles a teacher has in the classroom. This part I already knew from experience, but I realized I have been relying to heavily in 3 or 4 areas. I should try to incorporate all teacher roles. Opening the course with an overview of qualities of good learners and teachers, then moving on to instruction/teaching styles, as well as levels and motivation was a good way to start thinking about how they all intersect. While reading the Unit contents, I reflected back on the few months I have been observing classrooms here, and how it takes a variety of methods to lead a successful class. I feel i learnt a lot from this first unit, for example, all the different roles that a teacher can have and, according to what the specific lesson requires, being able to decide what is the best role to use. i think that a teacher should know how to have each one of these roles but understand also which one to let prevail in every single situation. i learnt also that the age of a student and all his/her life experience and culture make a big difference; so the teacher should be able to pick on all these factors and try to encourage the students, motivating them by showing interest and availability for each one, still remaining a teacher and not a friend.

I feel some of the things I learned in this course were concepts I knew already from common sense. However, it was reassuring and clarifying to see my own ideas laid out in lists and reinforced. I think the points that have most helped my understanding of teaching were the wide array of roles that a teacher can occupy. When in doubt, this list will help me make sure I am not too overbearing or overly focused on minute details. I feel to be a good teacher, one must occupy all these roles at the appropriate times, and I think it will be good to have them in my back pocket for the time when they are needed.

Some of these roles include; organizer, assessor, prompter, model, and tutor. Which role a teacher takes on will depend on the classroom, and the learners in that classroom. I always tell my students that everything is important in the process of learning English. Grammar is one of this important issues. Unfortunately it is not the easiest part but it is possible to learn it in convenient, approachable and understandable way of explanation and practice. I have learned in Unit 2 all of almost everything that I forgot growing older in life and not making connections of all the nouns, verbs, etc. that I use in everyday conversations. My head was about to explode after trying to remember all the things I forgot, it was a great refresher course. While there are many ambiguities as to steadfast rules of English grammar, basic guidelines can making learning English more accessible. I learned many helpful ways of breaking down sentences so that, by understanding the parts of sentences, I might be able to better explain how different grammar aspects are used to make a sentence. I also learned about where specific trouble spots might occur for English language learners.

Unit 2 gave an introduction to grammar and the parts of speech that are the foundation for the English language. It is fundamental that a teacher of English understands these basics of grammar or else it is likely the teacher could lose the confidence of his or her students.
The unit included covering the usage, types, and exceptions (with examples) of the following: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, gerunds, prepositions and conjunctions, and articles.
From this unit, I was able to reflect on the various parts of speech, how they function within a sentence, as well as how to identify each and explain to a an ESL student.

In general, I was able to review the basic parts of speech: Noun, pronoun, adjective, articles, verbs, adverbs, and prepositions. Though I have a verbal mastery of these concepts, reviewing their grammatical purposes has given me a better understanding of how to explain them to a learner of English. Brushing up on the touchier concepts, such as gerunds, will help me with my own conceptualization of language.

This unit covered the parts of speech and their usage. It paid particular attention to the rules, exceptions, and possible area of confusion for both teachers and students. This included the use of nouns verbs, adverbs, adjectives, articles, conjunctions and prepositions in their various forms, as well as distinctions between singular and plural, transitive and intransitive usages etc.
I found the distinctions between the various connecting words, conjunctions and prepositions, for example to be the most helpful.

Unit 2
The different parts of speech were explained with examples of how to use them. The details of the different prepositions, articles, adjectives, etc were also covered. The chapter is a good review for learning or improving grammar. The unit is quite detailed in the aspects of giving actual examples for each part of speech and also explaining them with examples. This unit tries to help the reader understand when to use each part of speech and how to give examples for potential students. It is a rather long unit with 24 pages, but it is broken down in an ogranized manner that is fairly easy to follow.

I have learnt about the various parts of speech. I have learnt about their definitions and the uses of the parts of speech. I have learnt that adjectives should be arranged according to size, age, color and material followed by the noun. The information given on countable and uncountable nouns was interesting. It was very refreshing to learn about adverbs and prepositions and their functions in grammar.

This section delves into more of the intricacies of grammatical structure of sentences. There is much that could be covered in the test itself from the material presented in this detailed unit. More examples were given of some grammatical terms than others, and those were quite helpful. For example, the chart of verbs broken down by present, past, past participle, and present participle was most helpful.

In Unit 2 I learned all the parts of speech and how to apply their function to sentences. I also learnt how to apply them in teaching and to explain what each part of speech does and when to apply them. There are many parts of speech, that to non-speaking English students might be very confusing and overwhelming. When teaching them I will take my time to explain what they mean and how to use them in sentences and make sure to go slow not to get them confused and demotivated.

This unit was a perfect and thorough grammar review. It covered every important topic and was very interesting. I learned how to explain difficult grammar topics in a simple way, without giving too much information and, avoiding, at the same time, to give too little, leaving the student unsatisfied. Unit 2 was a very long section. The material reviewed contained a great deal of information. Much of the basic structures I still remember from college, however, the detailed information was most helpful. Learning the specifics again will help me to teach and write more confidently. I think a few more example sentences would have been helpful. I didn't have any problems with this section as I have studied the grammar alot over the last few years. Just from my education at school alone I would have been in great difficulty answering these questions.

This Unit is about parts of speech. This discuss Nouns, Pronouns, Verbs, Adjectives, Adverbs, etc. This goes in depth about constructing sentences using these parts of speech. Even though we do not always use correct sentences, it is important that we learn the background of the English language and how to create sentences. In this unit I learned the different parts of a speech. Though intuitive to most native speakers, I found that learning each part of speech and the different components of a sentence helped me to better understand why we construct sentences the way we do and therefore will help me to better explain it to others. Understanding the parts of speech in the English language allow a teacher to break down the rules of sentence structure and grammar for more advanced students. By understanding the basic rules of sentence structure and parts of speech a teacher can more confidently motivate their students whilst clearly explaining rules, patterns, and exceptions in the English language.
