I have learned that being a teacher is not as easy as a lot of people might think. Depending on the circumstances, a teacher has to be able to adapt and to assume the role, which is most appropriate in that particular situation. For example, as a manager the teacher takes on a leading role, while as an observer the teacher stays mostly in the background.
I have found out that students are not all the same, but differ depending on factors like their age, culture, language level, life experience and motivation. For example, adult learners are more motivated than younger learners. On the other hand, younger learners are more language aware than adult learners.
I believe that it is very important to know and to understand the complex relationship between teachers and learners. By doing so, I hope to become a good teacher one day. Someone who is able to inspire and to motivate learners to learn the beautiful language called English.

This first unit was a great way to start identifying some of the main qualities of a good teacher. As an aspiring educator it encourages me to see that I also share some of those qualities. For example, my love for teaching, patience and fairness are some qualities that I identify with. This Unit talks about the qualities that are required for good teachers, such as being kind and patient with your students and being passionate about what you are doing, as well as being able to interact with your class successfully and involve every single student in the learning process.
It also lists the roles the teacher can play in the classroom (e.g. Manager, Organizer, Observer). All those roles should be studied carefully as each of them
works best for a certain
Type of activity and it helps the teacher to choose the best way to interact with
kids during the activity.
In addition, the qualities of a good learner were named in the Unit. Among them are: desire to listen to and experiment with the language, as well as general desire to learn; a good learner should also be courageous enough to ask questions and accept his/her test results even when they're not as good as expected.
All learners are usually divided into groups based on their age, culture, motivation, language level and others. Some groups are more challenging for the teacher than others.
As for dividing students by their language level, two most widely used classifications were presented. I have to admit that the one established by the Council of Europe was new to me. Though its levels are very close to the traditional levels we are using now (Beginner, Elementary, Pre-intermediate, and so on).
Regarding motivation, the learners can be divided in the following groups: those who are led by the necessity to talk to partners or friends in English, those who want to move to an English speaking country to study or work there, students who want to improve their grades at school or college, or people who seek better
job opportunities which usually require the knowledge of English.
That's as much as I have learned from the Unit 1. A lot of information given in the Unit weren't new to me, but it gave the structure to the knowledge I already had. Personally, I had experience with teaching both adults and
young learners, and was excited to see the factors upon which learners can be classified and what difficulties each age group can cause. I also find the part of the Unit concerning the roles of teachers very interesting. I looked at it in terms of my own experience and realized that I use a few but not all the roles mentioned. I see now how I could've been more effective by taking up a role of a Prompter, for example.",

The content of this unit clearly defines the characteristics of a good teacher and a good student. It then reviews the different age groups of learners and the different levels. It also covers the different roles a teacher plays in the classroom and when each role is appropriate. The lesson also touches on the differences between the different age levels of learners and how the differences affect their learning. I think this lesson has really helped me understand how the different ages of the learners bring different challenges to the classroom. For example, an adult is more nervous to experiment with the language while a pre-puberty learner is more open to experimenting and making mistakes.

Good teachers should be kind and patient, good motivators of their students, and should be aware of individual weaknesses in order to support student learning. Students who are motivated by travel, family or friends who speak English, or career advancement opportunities are going to be successful learners of English. Young students may absorb English more easily, but are more limited by their experiences, and may be less motivated to learn because they may not be attending class voluntarily. There are six basic levels of language acquisition. At the beginning level, students may not be able to produce any English. They gradually progress to become a Basic User, where they can begin to produce simple sentences, but with many mistakes. As they learn the structures of language and acquire vocabulary, they become Independent Users and begin to produce sentences on a variety of topics. As they gain Operational Proficiency they approximate the fluency of native speakers in some areas. They acquire more academic and specific vocabulary and refine structural knowledge until finally they master the language and speak similarly to a native speaker. They will continue to learn more specific vocabulary and understand subtleties of usage as they continue speak their second language.

Through the first unit of this course, I was able to distinguish the different language levels. Now I am able to distinguish the fine line between the different levels. Also, I now know the difference in teaching adults and
young learners. Specifically how adults tend to match new language to their native language, and how this can lead to problems. I realized why it is easier to teach adults rather than young learners. It is because the adults have longer attention span; therefore, teachers run in to less problems compared to young learners, who have short attention span.

This unit focused on two things: the fundamentals of both teaching and learning. With regards to teaching, it listed the qualities of a good teacher and also the various roles a teacher must play at various stages of presenting a lesson. The unit also presented the qualities of a good student and also the various motivations a student might have for learning English. Finally, the unit demonstrated the differences in experience, motivation, and behavior between adult learners and
young learners of various ages.
The biggest thing for me was an understanding of the need to be adaptable. There is no one role that I, as a teacher, can always use in teaching and I also need to be aware of the unique strengths and needs that the age and cultural background of my students will present.

Also, many things I know are buried inside my brain, things I need nearer the surface if I am to be a GOOD teacher. This unit has been a wake-up call for me to put aside my pride of experience. Two things have struck me as important. One is that though I have taught English, I have never taught it as a second language. I need to open my heart and mind and be prepared to learn aspects of teaching from a different perspective than I have ever done. And, two, I need to focus on keeping what I know and what I am learning at the forefront of my awareness. Much of what I know is filed away somewhere in the back of my brain because I don't think about those things (even if I use them) on a regular basis. (Sentence structure is an example. I do not usually give direct thought to sentence structure on a daily basis; but the information is filed away and I USE it daily.) As I am learning new information and preparing to participate in a new activity (teaching ESL) I need to focus on keeping the pertinent information in the forefront of my thoughts so it will be readily available. That is, perhaps, easier to do with newly learned material. Dredging up the old and filed information and keeping it in focus can be more of a challenge. Both are important. This challenge is the thing that struck me the strongest from this unit.

I have learned that one of most important parts of being a good teacher is to have student-centered classes, as it is very important to give the students a chance to practice their English skills actively.
Also, a teacher?s attitude affects beginner-level students directly and can either hurt them and discourage them from studying further, or spurn them on in their effort to do better. While the older students can motivate themselves and withstand teacher?s criticism, the younger ones are fragile and easily influenced by the teacher?s attitude.
Next, the teacher must be consistent in her initiative in the classroom when it comes to her attitude, tasks, discipline, lesson planning, and lesson differentiation and adjustment.
Last, but not least, I learned that it is important to a teacher to always try and improve her effectiveness and strive for better curriculum and lesson planning. As the students should not stop learning, neither should the teacher.

I have learned that a good teacher should be patient, enjoy teaching, and have knowledge about the subject that they are teaching. There are many different stages when learnerning a language and you have to motivate students in different ways. I learned what the good qualities are for both students and teachers. I learned, importantly, that the teacher has a wide variety of roles in the classroom, from manager to facilitator. Unit 1 mainly discussed about characteristics of good teachers and qualities of good students as well as different level of learners and age difference amonge the learners.
There are about six characteristics in a good teacher and one teacher could have many different roles depending on the activities and lesson as well as students' levels. For example, manager, organizer, accessor, prompter, participant, tutor, facilitator, model and observer.
There are also around six qualities in a good learner while other factors are influcing a learner's condition. Such as, age, culture and first language, language levels, and so on.
This chapter is highly useful because it gave me a great understanding about the most important two parties in a teaching process which are teacher and student.It described almost every factors about these two parties in great detail and will help me a great deal in future teaching career.
In conclution, I have learned good characteristics and roles of a teacher as well as good qualities in a learner and factors which influce learners' performance. After this lesson, I undertand better about the role and responsibilities of a teacher and difference amonge students.

Though a did well in grammer while in school, that was over twenty five years ago. Then when I learned a second language I learned a lot more about my own language. But,now it was good to study all the parts of language to get the whole picture and to remember some things I forgot like gerunds. This unit teaches all the parts of a sentence and many of the rules (with exceptions) about how they should be used.

It has been a long time since I have learned grammar rules. This brings it back to the front burner. I had forgotten about several things. Countable and uncountable nouns. Unit two covered a vast amount of information. I found it overwhelming to go through, and it would have been impossible to cover over the short period of time I studied had I not have taken many classes previously that covered in depth each of these topics and subtopics. I felt that the unit would better serve had it been broken into two or three smaller units. Overall, I did get a lot out of the unit as there are many rules broken down in the unit that make sense when I use them, but I had not specifically considered what the rule was. Also, I think it helped me to understand WHY learning English is overwhelming to someone who has not learned it natively growing up - there are many rules and exceptions to keep track of and it is both overwhelming and stressful to attempt to keep it straight as you begin to learn the language.

Using these parts of speech properly is important not just for practicing proper grammar, but for clarity in communication. Each part of speech can become quite detailed in its purpose and use (rules). Further, in English there are many exceptions to the rules that

I thought this was a fascinating unit because as a native speaker I don't often consider parts of speech in everyday usage. I found the section about how to list adjectives particularly interesting because I didn't even know there was a rule about adjective order, and yet I intuitively knew it!

this unit focuses on the basic grammar in English, such as the different kinds of nouns, adjectives(including comparatives and superlatives), definite and indefinite articles, verbs(including the irregular words' four different principal forms),adverbs, pronouns and some other important grammar. let me realize that grammar is not only the boring thing we learn form the book, it also be used frequently in our daily life. so, as a teacher, we must teach students to write, to speak with correct grammar. I think grammar is very significant as it is the foundation of English, I should pay more attention to grammar when I teach my students.
