This unit was a helpful overview of the qualities of a good teacher and the roles they can perform. I was struck by the many and diverse roles that a teacher needs to take on to be able to teach more effectively. The roles must be understood and used in a balanced way. The factors that influence the learner were also helpful (ie. motivation, nervousness, language awareness, culture, etc). The unit helped me focus on the advantages that each age of learner brings, especially how age effects motivational factors. Age also will effect the life experience a student will bring and the behavior they will display. The levels of language learners was not new to me but it was clearly presented as a good review.

This unit was for the purpose of introducing the teacher to the basic theoretical ideas of what makes a good teacher and a good learner, as well as for understanding the different types of learners. Several traits and behaviors can account for a successful teacher, including but not limited to: kindness and patience, a passion for teaching, ability to motivate learners, good subject knowledge, good rapport and interaction with the class, the inclusion of all students in the classroom, ability to sensitively correct students, and willingness to help each student based on their unique strengths and weaknesses. The above description of a good teacher should follow the teacher through the many roles that they must take on in the classroom. As I understood from the unit, a successful teacher will be able to take on all of these roles in order to provide a balance of motivation, structure and control, instruction and facilitation, encouragement, feedback, individual attention, oversight, and a great model of the English language. More specifically, a good teacher should be able to act as all of the following things. manager/controller: In this role you are more or less lecturing, instructing, or performing for the class and all eyes are on you. This requires the ability to entertain and hold the classes' attention. While important, this role should not be overused. Organizer: I see this as the facilitator role. In this role the teacher is making sure that learning activities are understood by the students and run smoothly and effectively. Assessor: In this role the teacher needs to give feedback. It is very important to do this because students want to know how they're doing and need the feedback to improve or know what they need to work on. Positive feedback is as important as correction. Prompter: This role is necessary to encourage students to experiment and take risks to speak English even if it means making mistakes. Prompting may include asking questions or giving a little encouragement when a student is struggling to communicate. Participant: Sometimes the teacher must get on the students' level and interact in games and activities. In this role, it's important not to hog attention or "show off"".

The chapter explained in detail how to use each teaching style and how to be careful of overusing them, which could be harmful in the learning process. In Unit 1 I learned the basics of teachers and students. This lesion was an overview of what a good teacher should be and what feature students may be like. A good teacher should be not only be kind but also know their subject and motivate their students to learn the subject. Students come in all levels and have different motivations. It is important for teachers to know what kind of student they we'll be teaching and their characteristics. This unit taught me that to be a good teacher I should know how to be a manager, organize, prompter, participant, tutor, facilitator, model, monitor, and an assessor. Also be able to decide when each role should be played. Finally I learned the differences in the kinds of learners. From the very young to the experienced each comes with their own motivations, experiences, and behaviors. It's good to know the differences so I can know how to proceed with each level.

In this section I have learned what qualities of a teacher I feel are most important. Personally I feel these would be motivating learners and correcting students without offending them or affecting their motivation. I also began considering the various qualities that good learners may possess and how this can relate directly to their motivation. It is my observation in this lesson that a desire to learn and the why behind the desire can effect everything else. It also seems age is a key factor as well, as the differences between adult and young students both have their pros and cons in the learning environment. In addition to age differences, the language levels can effect the teaching environment and can be responsible for learning motivation, or lack there of.

Unit 1 (Teachers and Learners) was informative about multiple topics. I learned that there are five main roles a teacher can encompass, whether it a facilitator or a manager. Also, the best thing a teacher can care about is not just teaching itself, but more about the learning of their students. Finally, the most interesting topic I learned about in Unit 1 was the six different levels of English language level. Originally I had thought there were only three different levels, however, the different language levels are more detailed than just three, and six deemed extremely appropriate.

In general, this unit covered information about both the teacher and the learner or student. Within the first main section about the teacher, the unit began with an overview of characteristics of a good teacher and then discussed different roles of teachers. I think that an important takeaway from this section is the importance of being able to transition from one role to another seamlessly and effectively throughout class, both to maintain attention and motivation but also because it allows for more effective teaching. Within the second main section about the learner, the unit began with an overview of characteristics of a good learner and then discussed different attributes that make for different kinds of learners with different motivation types. This component made me think quite a bit about how my students will be young adults and how I will need to actively maintain their attention and try to increase motivation - as they are less motivated than adults.

There are many ways in which a teacher can go about teaching a class. It is best to utilize several different methods rather than sticking to just one. Adapting to the classroom and the language level that the students are at is vital to teaching in an effective manner. Class activity will likely be a large part of my classes because I favor practice and experimentation but I will also be sure to give adequate lectures keeping in mind those students who are more audial or too shy to fully participate in activities. I know that I must go into the classroom with an open mind and determine my teaching methods on a case by case basis.

Analyzing all those factors showed me even more how important it is to treat our students individually. I understood that the main goal of teacher is to care about the success of his students. This unit covered the differences between a learner and a teacher. It also discussed the different levels of language fluency and certain milestones within. The characteristics that make up a good teacher include a mixture of personality-driven traits and competent training. Conversely, a good learner should be open to anything, including constructive criticism and have an absolute desire to learn. This includes motivation, both on gaining it and maintaining it. I learned from this unit how to classify students and learning the milestones really helped me to understand and empathize with future students. I also learned a few different strategies on how to engage the class, from joining in on occasion to managing the class completely. There is a time and a place for these two extremes, as well as the other strategies encompassed within that spectrum, and how you choose which one to use is paramount in being an effective teacher.

I have learned to give more attention to my relationship with my students. It is also not enough to simply teach something out of a book. Inspiring students to do their best each day through gentle but firm encouragement greatly contributes to their learning. This unit gave a clear outline of the effective teacher and model student. It is beneficial to remember all of the keys given and heed them when imparting knowledge to students and indeed trying to extract the best learning possible from them. This was a good representation of all the attributes to aim for in both student and teacher. Teacher must cares about the learning of the students first of all. Furthermore teacher must feel himself in different roles as manager, assessor, prompter and others according his class and motivate students to make lesson more comfortable and enjoyable. I learned a lot from this chapter. I can speak English but, having to explain why Before would have been difficult. This chapter gives me a better explanation as to why and when. This unit is very well put together with information on how a sentence is structured. All the rules are very clear It was interesting to return to school days and it was even more interesting to find out that I could comprehend the concepts far easier than those days when I was a young school boy. A very constructive section full of information that we have to pass on to students one day in our own class hopefully. Parts of speech: there purpose, categories and relationship in sentences.

The use of parts of speech is a very important thing that native speakers do not always pay attention to. Knowing when to use curtain parts of speech is also very important because most people do not use speech the correct way. When teaching this to non-English speakers it can also be very difficult because some languages do not go by the same rules that we English speakers use. Teaching students how to use speech the right way puts them one step closer to learning the English language and becoming more familiar with it.

Unit 2 was about basic grammar. It covered both general and specific details on things such as nouns, adjectives, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns, conjunctions, prepositions, etc. Although I am familiar with grammar and with teaching it, I did not know many things such as the order adverbs should be placed in, and the different categories of conjunctions & prepositions. I think this lesson will be most helpful when teaching grammar, especially if I can make mnemonics out of them.

I was a little concerned coming into this lesson knowing that it would be on grammar. But I feel much more comfortable about defining parts of speech now. Learning which nouns are "countable"" or ""uncountable"" will certainly help me explain to my students why they should conjugate a certain way. Overall It always helps to go through some grammar, no matter if you know/knew it already or not. This unit made me more aware again about the way I talk in day to day life. Very well put together. Easy to read an understand. I've learn't more about my language and It has definitely helped me to understand my field.

This unit was a good reminder of the proper Grammar that I was taught in school. I have always had a good command of the English language but, with use, we can sometimes forget the correct names for the parts of speech. I assume that your lessons are based on european standards, as some of the terminology is different from what I was taught in canada. Overall, I found it very informative and enjoyed refreshing my memory.

The unit gives examples of all of the grammatical components and explains how they carry meaning. I have learned about the many intricacies of the English language that most fluent speakers never think about. It shows where the grammatical inconsistencies lie that might cause learners to stumble.

The parts of speech. This is a topic I have not worked with for a long time and the review on the subject was very beneficial. The many definitions were understandable and help in the teaching of this subject matter. It was challenging and a lot of material in one lesson but is set up of be a good resource in the future.

This unit focused on grammar and especially on the basic components of a sentence. It helped me to remember the grammar rules that I had forgotten. I was able to remember old components such as initiatives and auxiliary verbs. Sometimes when I find it difficult to explain grammar rules to other people, but I think it will be more effective to communicate with students if I know how to structure a sentence well and in depth.

This unit covered the basic building blocks of the English language and the types of words used in a sentence. While it is easy to rely on the old ?a noun is a person, place, or thing?, this unit was very helpful in delving deeper into the parts of speech we use regularly but do not think about. These include things like prepositions or uncountable nouns. This refresher on the basics of grammar and parts of speech was very welcome.

I feel this unit was immensely helpful in preparing me for teaching English. As a native speaker of English, and one who performed rather well in English classes throughout school, I found it surprising how little I knew of parts of speech for the language. I am enjoying learning about the English language very much. However, I still have a lot of studying to do Before I reach the level of mastery I hope to achieve and this is making me slightly insecure about my current command of the language. I am looking forward to mastering the particular problem areas I have encountered so far such as gerunds, verb forms, and relative pronouns.

Although I have spoken English my whole life I found that I did not know names and explanations for most of these parts of speech. I had to spend a lot of hours learning the intricacies of my own language! I take my hat off to speakers of other languages who learn English. Transitive and intransitive verbs, infinitives, gerunds and the different subtypes of adverbs eg: degree were all new to me.

The Unit focuses a lot on the importance of identifying parts of speech within basic sentences. It is shown that each word in a sentence can be classified, according to its purpose and meaning. The Unit really focuses on showing multiple parts of speech, and how we can utilize each parts of speech in sentences. I have learned that it is really important that I know parts of speech, because teaching parts of speech to students will eventually be the first step to introducing them to English grammar. It is also very beneficial that a teacher educates her students on different parts of speech Before having them write sentences in essay format. This Unit has really shown me what I also do wrong in my everyday use of English grammar.

Parts of speech, it was challenging but I was able to grasp the objectives of the lesson. I feel that this unit should have been split into two other units. For someone that hasn't had grammar taught to them in awhile, it seemed a bit overwhelming. By reading this Unit I could refresh my knowledge about parts of speech. I really enjoyed video material, made by Teachers Trainer Eric Haeg I could get a lot of interesting information and great examples. I struggled a little bit with transitive and intransitive verbs, about which I will look more in other online resources. This obviously takes a lot of practice. But the unit certainly clarified gammer for me. It provided me with examples that I would use in class. The issue at hand is that the students should learn grammar so that it comes to them naturally, otherwise they are faced with the problem that they will over-think things.
