The first part covers the qualities of a ?Good Teacher? with regard to the roles he/she should assume to effectively facilitate the learning of the students. A good teacher takes on many roles, like that of a manager or controller, an organizer, assessor, prompter, participant, tutor, facilitator or resource, model and observer or monitor. What is important is that the teacher is able to switch between those roles appropriately and is aware of how to carry out the required role as well as know what roles to take and when. The second part describes the qualities of learners. The factors that contribute to a ?Good Learner? such as age, language skills, motivation for learning, etc. It further goes on to describe the difference in characteristics of an adult learner and a young learner. It illustrates language levels and how a teacher would be required to utilize the various kinds of activities based on the language levels of the learners. Motivation in a learner is also highlighted as one of the most important qualities. Learners as well must have the desire and ability to expand their own limitations in order to be of service to themselves and to the teacher. I was a primary teacher in my native country Ukraine for seven years and two years in Ukrainian Saturday school in this country. However, in spite of all my experience I was delighted to learn a lot! As Unit 1 mentioned that students from certain cultures are encouraged NOT to speak, NOT TO GIVE TOO MANY questions etc. It exactly applies to the former Soviet Union countries. So, I am very glad to discover that the teacher does not need to be deeply serious at all times, but can be lively and entertaining. I like a lot the idea that at certain stages of the lesson the teacher may also participate in the lesson as an equal partner. I never myself tried that Before. Also something new for me is ... a silence. The teacher should let his students to learn a language for themselves without any interruption. This is quite surprising for me as well because in my country (when I was getting my education) teacher would lecture 90% of the lesson. I have a little doubt about being the role model in pronunciation -- I have a very popular Slavonic (polish-Ukrainian-Russian) accent: how I can help it? Another challenge for me as a teacher of English as a Second Language would be to detect personal difficulties of different students and provide sufficient and prompt help for each of them. I am very thankful for disclosure about age groups - I think I prefer to work with adults.

Unit 1 provides characteristics of a good teacher. One of which is a good teacher has the skills to correct their students without offending them. As a teacher there are many roles to take on such as the manager, facilitator, tutor, participant, etc. A good teacher will be able to decide which role they need to fulfill at that time. Furthermore, Unit 1 talks about the learner and how age can play a factor in ones motivation to learn. For example, an adult is more likely to be motivated to learn English because they know that speaking English could help them advance in their career. On the flip side, a 13 year old may be less motivated to learn English because they are less likely to take chances such as pronouncing a new word sound. This unit was extremely informative on what makes a good learner and a good teacher. One thing that I learned from this unit was the different language levels a student may be at. Also, I thought it was very important that motivation was brought up several times throughout the unit. Motivation makes learning and teaching fun.

For me it was interesting to hear about the differencies between adults and young learners, as I'm teaching both. Motivating young learners has always been a great issue and I think that it hardly works in groups of 20 pupils or more. I have never thought about differencies in teaching european or asian students, that's quite interesting as well. There are many different personality and relationship qualities that make up a good teacher, in particular, a good teacher can judge what role is required in each particular activity. Learners of different age groups have different motivators to learn and lessons need to take into account the students language level. I think that a good teacher takes great satisfaction in the fact that he or she is successful in helping even the weakest students to speak English. I've also learnt that a good teacher should be able to involve all students and should be patient and entertaining.

The unit also informs us what to expect from our potential students. Surprisingly, I find this unit quite helpful and gives me a clearer picture of what goes on in a tefl class.

Unit 1 is split into 2 parts. Firstly, Unit 1 discusses teachers by exploring the various roles they play during class. I feel I've leant how to recognize each of the 9 roles which were discussed. I feel this important information will aid me in developing my methodology as well as provide me with a greater sense of awareness when making my own lesson plans. Secondly, Unit 1 discusses learners. I feel as though now I have good knowledge of what to expect from different age groups regarding their behaviour, motivation and the impact of each person's life experience. I also feel I've learnt how to distinguish between the different language levels. Overall, I feel as though I have absorbed all the information from Unit 1.

This unit served as an introduction to good teachers and good learners. During the unit, I learned which traits a good teacher will generally have (or should have), and how to recognize good learners. Also, the unit covered the motivation for students and how to improve and evaluate motivation based on level. This unit gave me the detailed information about roles of teachers and learners. The test after the unit was very useful and it helped practice the knowledge gained from this unit. I liked the lessons on this section; however, I did not like the questions relating to a bunch of situational scenarios. I don't know how relative those questions are when it comes to a real teaching/learning situations.

A classroom is a most peculiar place. It is essential for both teacher and student that this place is well organised. Since teaching inside a classroom is not a natural way of learning, I believe it's key to simulate life-like situations as much as possible, to speak the innate motivation every learner possesses. A teacher's job is hard to summarise since teachers are in charge of both their own functioning as well as organising the best possible learning environment for every single learner present. Since, all learners often come from different backgrounds, have different levels of English (even if they are in the same grade) and have a very different motivational level this is not an easy job. From my own experience, it is key to be fair to all pupils, since especially the post puberty ones I teach are very sensitive about this. I must say I Haven't had any trouble with the different roles a teacher is supposed to play in class, though I believe the manager is a bit out of Date. I don't believe in one teacher who pretends to know it all. I feel comfortable among pupils as an organiser or prompter. I believe a true teacher has these roles inside and switches between them without thinking them through. I realise that every teacher is different, but I am a strong believer in student-centered lessons. Getting to know your pupils (their way of learning, their background, their level) is important to ensure every pupil's individual progress. At school we use the european division of levels from A to C, but I believe it is far more important to understand exactly where a pupil can improve and to communicate openly towards the pupils in question so he or she can work individually on what need to be improved.

The teacher has many roles to play during every class. It is up to the teacher to know when he or she should manage, participate, assess, facilitate or tutor, for example. It also the role of the teacher to identify the student's current level of understanding. He or she must also consider aspects of the student such as age, culture and past experience in order to best establish rapport.

I learned that a good teacher should care more about the learning of the students than the teaching. However, I feel that both are necessary to be a good teacher. Another key point of a good teacher is that he/she should be able to motivate their students. I felt that motivation was a key factor for a good learner. I learned that there are many roles of a teacher. I felt that the more important of the roles are: organizer (as mentioned in the lesson), model, observer/monitor, and resource/facilitator. I believe the organizer is important because without instruction, there will definitely be chaos. I chose model because I firmly believe that a teacher should be a role model of all sorts such as manner and knowledge. Another important role is the resource/facilitator because it is important to be accessible for the learners when they need guidance. Lastly observer/monitor is important because to know your students well, you need to observer and take note of their strength and weakness. I learned that there will be many level of learners. From beginners to advance, their lessons and their growth will be different. This unit taught me what expectation of teachers and students are. From learning about each role, I was able to see that teaching does not necessarily have to be one always taking charge and leading everything that happens in the classroom. Aside from being a facilitator, they could be a prompter, model, or assessor. This is something that I have not considered Before. I never thought of teaching this way. However, such method of viewing teaching would help in adding color to teaching so it won't be always you in front of the classroom, and it would encourage more participation, thus increasing amount of learning that takes place in the classroom. In addition, learning about different stages of learning helped me to understand the importance of knowing my audience before going about making lesson plans along with other factors that may influence learning of a person such as age, learning experience, and motivation.

It was a basic review as everyone of us have learned all of this Before in grade school. As a native speaker of the language, it has not been necessary for me to know all of the intricate details of the English language in day-to-day conversation, however it is necessary and helpful to know when teaching English as a foreign language.

This unit began with the assertions that grammar is a necessary building block of the English language and that the English teacher must have a firm foundation in its fundamentals. The teacher should begin with the most basic sentence structure and not assume that the student has any grammatical knowledge of the language. The unit offered a brief overview of several parts of speech including nouns, verbs, articles, adjectives, pronouns, gerunds and infinitives. Exceptions were presented along with some grammatical rules as a reminder that there are not always hard and fast rules to the English language. Potential stumbling blocks for students were also revealed. I learned that although I am a native English speaker, its rules can seem overwhelming when presented in a short period of time. I must keep that in mind when I begin teaching.

Unit two is very difficult remembering transitive, intransitive verbs along with auxiliary verbs and gerunds and how grammar is broken down within the sentences. I have learned that preparation is needed Before teaching a grammar course. The unit is very useful with the sentence structure and recognizing the parts of speech. Without a subject and a verb, there is no sentence. In addition, there are several other parts of speech that help make your sentences much better. For example, adding adjectives will make your nouns stronger. Each part of speech goes in a specific place in the sentence. However, there are often exceptions to this. Any sentence may consist of a subject, verb and object. Further, each word in a sentence can be classified according to its purpose and meaning - parts of speech. The parts of speech are: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, articles, prepositions, conjunctions.

Basic forms of parts of speech and sentence structures that we use daily without necessarily thinking about the different forms and uses. A very interesting and useful unit. I particularly appreciated the section on Gerunds. The section on transitive and intransitives verbs was new to me and will enable me to explain this element of a sentence clearly and concisely.

This unit was quite intense. It contains a lot of information and it has helped be a lot to understand the English language so much better. As it's brief it was not always clear to me and I had to read it several times, but the video helped a lot even though it didn't cover all the specifics mentioned in the written unit. This unit is a brief review of the nature and use of grammatical components that must be understood in order to diagram a sentence and explain to students the reasoning behind its structure. I loved this unit. It refreshed my memory on why I structure sentences the way I do in speech and writing. This unit defined and gave examples of the various parts of speech and how they are used within the English language. As for most native English speakers, I found the examples to make sense however I did not previously know the correct terms for each of the components. The unit has strengthened my already established knowledge. What struck me the most - in a very positive way - it was the commentary and the examples, great ready-made tools for educating children, priceless! The presentation of consolidated examples in the pdf article and the video supporting material, made it truly worth the time. Ready for next lessons.

For students that are learning English, the parts of speech are important because they are the basis of the language. This unit involved the parts of speech. I learned a lot in this unit because it broke down sentences and explained what each word was. I learned about articles, which can be definite or indefinite. Prepositions and conjunctions confused me at first, but now I understand the difference between the two. This unit is particularly valuable to me because it covers one of my weakest areas, which is the proper classification and utilization of parts of speech. Grammar is not a topic I have much school-based experience in practicing. I find the topic confusing because of the variables and exceptions that exist in the English language. Confusion leads to frustration, an emotion I am sure many other English learners experience when confronted by grammar. However, this unit broke the topic down well enough that I feel I grasp the subject a bit better than Before. I will continue to study outside of this course as well.

In this unit I learned about the pieces that make up basic sentence structure. The different kinds of nouns, verbs, adverbs, and adjectives were all discussed. Articles, both definite and indefinite, were touched on, as were gerunds, prepositions, and conjunctions. I learned about the specific purpose of all of these parts in making a sentence come together properly. It was nice to review grammar. It's easy to forget specific types of parts of speech. For example, "water"" is a noun I learned about countable and uncountable nouns and what articles to use with which. I also learned about the order that adjectives take in sentences. I also learned the different forms of verbs and pronouns. There was also information on comparative and superlative adjectives. I learned quite a bit about the articles the and a/an.

We reviewed the components of a sentence including the preposition, the noun, the verb, the adverb, the conjunction, the gerund. We reviewed what was the infinitive, the past particple, the present, the present particple and the simple past. We also reviewed comparative adjectives. We reviewed countable and uncountable nouns, and transitive and intransitive verbs. I have learnt from the content of this unit the basics of parts of speech and how to break sentences down. Each part of speech can be categorised into more detail and usage. Some parts of speech can play a double act e.g. a preposition and an adverb depending on whether it requires an object or not. I have certainly reviewed my grammar rules and brushed up on my grammar. I loved relearning about important information like nouns, adjectives, adverbs, articles, conjuctions, pronouns, and many more.

In this unit, I have learned the different parts of speech. As a native speaker of English, I only knew the basics like noun and verb, but this unit has helped me understand that there is more to the English language than just those two. This unit was about parts of speech, such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. It explained how these parts of speech are used in a sentence, how to explain some of them to English learners and examples of each. It also described the differences between different types of each parts of speech (such as countable vs. uncountable nouns and transitive vs. intransitive verbs). I?m very well-acquainted with English grammar and am currently an assistant English teacher in japan so I didn?t learn all that much from this lesson. However, I did find the examples of how to teach parts of speech interesting and informative. I also appreciated the list of when to use and when not to use ?the?, such as using ?the? with rivers, but not lakes.
