This first unit served as an introduction to teaching strategies by addressing teacher-student relationships. The unit described the basic characteristics of good teachers and good learners as well as the different responsibilities of each group in a classroom setting. In addition, the unit explained the different learning levels and outlined some of the challenges of teaching each level. I learned that while teaching English as a foreign language will at times be difficult regardless of the learning level, the teacher must remain patient and do what they can to help each student meet their learning goals. This might require that the teacher change their approach, for example one student might need more individual attention or students may need more opportunities to practice using the language, so the teacher must also be flexible and comfortable with a variety of teaching methods.

The teacher has many different roles in the classroom and is not just the person who stands at the front of the class and talks, they must also give feedback, encouragement, and at times let the students work on their own. A teacher also needs to take into consideration the level and age of their students as this effects the teaching methods which may be more successful. For example, adults may be more reluctant to play games and speak aloud in class for fear of losing face. They may also be limited by their grammatical knowledge of their own language and have difficulties applying new grammatical rules to a new language. Preschoolers on the other hand will enjoy games and visual learning but will often have limited attention spans compared with adults. The motivation of students must also be considered as at times students will become demotivated by slow progress and a teacher must be able to give encouragement to the students. The students will also have their own motivations for learning English. For some it will be in order to further their careers, others for travel, and others may be because they want to move to an English speaking country.

This unit is showing us what makes a good teacher and a good student. with being a good teacher entails being patient and understanding with the students guiding the whole class equally, and having a good solid knowledge base to use and how to use certain teaching styles to properly set up that days lesson without losing their attention. a good learner though has one or more prime motivations either, for a career choice to earn more income traveling overseas or other English countries, trying to have good grades and score higher on exams, or just a simple interest in other languages. the rest of the unit walked us through the stages and possible expectations of young learners vs older learners of various experience levels while young learners might not be concerned with making mistakes older students would have reservations of speaking in class around friends or peers. and adults having probably at least some form of language education will expect certain teaching styles that might differ most language plans. the final major piece i would think is the cultural view of how the classrooms work, for example asian cultures place more emphasis on students being quiet and not talking unless directed by teachers, and thus having classroom time dedicated to them doing group work practicing could have other teachers view the class as undisciplined. while south america and other european counties might have a different view on how students must act in a class. in short it taught me the qualities of a good teacher and student, the different levels of which i might be teaching along with pros and cons of each age group and experience level and on the teaching types (moderator, model, moniter ect) and to recognize cultural conditions with teaching in different countries

Unit 1 is a good introduction to understand what a good teacher can do and what traits good students have. By understanding those traits, I can utilize them to my benefit when teaching. Also, to understand my strengths and weaknesses as a teacher can help me to hone my skills to be a better teacher and to understand the students' needs more. Since I teach children, I have not considered what traits are beneficial when teaching adults. Now, for future reference, I have the knowledge and it will serve me well. From previous experience I had students that lacked motivation, because they would most likely not have a need to use English in their mediocre future careers, and to understand how better to motivate will better adapt me for similar future situations.

Unit 1 taught me what it means to be a good ESL teacher, to differentiate between the various levels of ESL students and how to encourage these students to be good learners. A good ESL teacher should be kind, patient, caring, encouraging and able to channel his or her English language knowledge into good teaching skills...There are various components to good teaching skills, such as managing, assessing, prompting, organizing, modeling, monitoring, facilitating and occasionally tutoring. Motivating students to learn will require critical thinking on my part. I must take into consideration their age, language level, educational and cultural background, life experience and whether they are self-motivated or not. It takes a lot of preparation, good listening skills and flexibility to be a successful ESL teacher.

It was very interesting to review what I already know. It was informative and introductory. I didn't know the international grading system. Also it was wonderful to refresh my understanding of what the teacher is supposed to be. The part about motivation and learning abilities was very useful also. I learnt the motivation difference between the adults who chose to take the classes in contrast to the students who are often forced can greatly alternate the atmosphere of the class. From observing each class, the role of the teacher should be adjusted accordingly to best suit the student's needs There are many different attributes and roles that a teacher must employ at the appropriate time in order for students to be successful. Thus it is important to understand the differences between young and adult learners as well as know the language levels to appropriately cater the lessons.

I find information in the video is very helpful as the instructor gave examples that I could employ in a classroom. For instance, when presenting the first role of a teacher, controller, he wrote ?Ok everyone stop and look at me, I will explain? on the board, this is very useful because I used it in my own class, it helped students focus upon my teaching. The instructor also provided information that does not show in the unit handout materials. For example, he mentioned that a good teacher should also be fair, this complements the contents of unit one handout. The contents regarding differences between age groups are very informative and allow me to start from a student?s point of view when I am teaching. Some cases in point are ?young learners are more likely to have an open-minded approach to new learning experiences and methods? and ?adults naturally have more life experience to bring in the class and this can make the lessons more varied and interesting?. These provides me various factors that I need to take into consideration while teaching. To conclude, being a good teacher is not as simple as imparting knowledge, it also includes managing a good relation between the teacher and his/her students. He/she should be able to realise that caring about the learning of the students is as important as conducting a good lesson. Maintaining a supportive relation between the teacher and the students are beneficial to both parts and to the class. A good teacher should be responsible, sensitive, caring, unbiased, and be able to motive students to be a good learner. A good teacher should be a good learning as well. He/she is to keep him/herself up to Date with new information and knowledge as the academic world is developing fast.

This unit was simple and straightforward. I appreciate the acknowledgement that the teacher holds many roles and positions. I do, however, believe that one important role was left out. Students are often also teachers just as teachers are often also learners. The relationship in the classroom is, in many ways reciprocal. The first unit did a great job of introducing the different kinds of students that I am likely to encounter, as well as the detailing my role as the instructor. I have learnt a lot in this unit. It taught me how a teacher should act in 'What makes a good teacher'. Mainly being fair and patient with all the students, motivating them and having a good knowledge of the subject you are teaching. It also taught me the 9 roles a teacher can take in a class room from taking control in the classroom to standing back and letting your students find their own way of learning. There are certain factors that you need to take into account of a good learner such as age, culture, language level and motivation for learning. This unit has showed me the 4 main age groups of the learners and how they are motivated, how they will generally behave and their experience in learning level. It also showed me that there are 5 main language levels and what characteristics they consist of. I feel that I now know more about why people want to take language lessons, the different types of teaching methods that can be used in a classroom and the different types of students that I could teach.

The content of unit one was a good foundation for lessons to come with a great introduction on how a teacher should teach and the qualities I need to hone in the near future. While this class has never really been my first choice, I realize it will be very straight forward. I really hope that in China the middle schoolers aren't as difficult as the unit describes. I think that this was a very interesting unit. It helped me understand not just the teaching side, but also the learning side. For me being able to be patient and kind to the students is very important. Also motivating and encouraging the student. Being a teacher I feel that when a student is having difficulties structuring their sentence, the teacher should encourage them, but not completely just give them the correct answer. I never really knew how to rate a student in terms of their level, so that was interesting to see.

I have learn a a lot from this unit about the complex relationship that exist between the teacher and the learner. This unit was very interesting, since it explained very clearly, so many grammar aspects that we use on our daily lives, however when it comes to explaining them to the students we may feel a bit confused, many times we don't know why we use certain things or why they go where they do, so this unit cleared some doubts that I had and also gave me a better idea on how to explain them to the students. Some of it was very simple, such as the comparative and superlatives and also the forms of the verbs, however others like the preposition and conjunctions were very good for me to learn.

This unit is titled Parts of Speech and it reflects on basic grammar rules and types of words that we use in everyday English. It covers nouns, pronouns, prepositions, adjectives, adverbs, verbs, conjuntions, articles, gerund...and within these categories talks about sub-categories or groups divided by different criteria. I liked this part of the course as it covers all the necessary types of words an English speaker uses to express himself/herself. I am looking forward to taking the next unit. Bring it on!

This unit provided a generalized bird's eye outline of English grammatical themes and structures. Despite having a native level of fluency in the language, it was extremely helpful to have such concepts addressed and explained. While I may use these grammatical nuances daily, I had little understanding of them and therefore could not have explained them to a learner of the English language. These concepts included parts of speech such as nouns, verbs, adverbs, and prepositions, and the unit went so far as to explain further within each part of speech such distinctions as (for example) countable, uncountable, proper, and compound nouns.

It is very important to know and memorize, though it is not easy, the names, uses and rules of words in the English language to explain to our students how it works and why. I believe prepositions are one of the most difficult words to understand and use in English when it is not your first language.

Before completing this unit I knew about nouns, adjectives, verbs, propositions, and conjunctions. However, I did not know that there were different types of adjectives, such as superlative adjectives, the only types of nouns I knew were proper nouns and I did not know about the different types of pronouns, countable nouns, or uncountable nouns. I also leant that there are definite and indefinite articles, as well as past simple and past participle forms of verbs.

I have learned the different parts of speech. I learned the difference between an adverb and an adjective. I also learned the difference between a gerund and an infinitive. The properties and details of parts of speech were discussed in this unit. The parts of speech discussed were nouns, adjectives, articles, verbs, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns, prepositions, and conjunctions. Each part of speech was broken down into categories and analyzed on how you come up with that certain category. For example, when trying to create a superlative adjective you simply add the ending ?est unless the word is three syllables or more. If the adjective is three syllables or more, you must add the word ?most? in front of the adjective. If the adjective ends in the letter ?y? then you must drop the ?y? and add the ending ?iest. Unfortunately, there are some exceptions that don?t follow this rule and must simply be memorized, for instance, the adjective good in its superlative form is the word best. It was interesting to have actual reasons for parts of language that I "just know Unit 2 gives information about basic grammar structure of sentences and basic grammar rules. We can find there part of speach and how to build correct sentences. We can learn from Unit 2 how to use each part of speach and what are the most common difficulties while creating basics sentences. This unit discusses parts of speech. I felt like it gave a clear overview of the basics of english grammar. Nearly every aspect was a good refresher for me. I wouldn't make any changes to it other than suggest that it might be divided into two sections as it is quite extensive.

I have learnt a tremendous amount from this unit,having gone over all the information and video at least 2 times. Without the full understanding of the unit,Parts of Speech, neither tutor or student will be able to progress satisfactorily. I had forgotten how many parts of the English language there were and how they interrelate to form both the spoken and written word. Sentence composition is crucial, with the juxtaposition of the words. From a tutor viewpoint I would use all the aspects of unit 1 to vary my teaching style to keep the students interested and motivated. If the students fully understand all these parts of the English language,then they will become fluent and therefore confident.I learned a phrase early in my career "I can be as good as the best"". By placing the emphasis on each individual word you end up with seven different statements. That's joy and and beauty of such a flexible language as English."

This unit is particularly valuable to me because it covers one of my weakest areas, which is the proper classification and utilization of parts of speech. Grammar is not a topic I have much school-based experience in practicing. Somehow I always managed to not be enrolled in the course that offered extensive sentence structure and grammar lessons. I find the topic confusing because of the variables and exceptions that exist in the English language. Confusion leads to frustration, an emotion I am sure many other English learners experience when confronted by grammar. However, this unit broke the topic down well enough that I feel I grasp the subject a bit better than Before. I will continue to study outside of this course as well.
