As this was the very first unit, most of the information I already knew or could deduce myself. What makes a good teacher and learner, as well as the multiple roles a teacher could, and should, play were covered in other education courses I have taken. However, I was interested in reading about what each language-level was called and how they were classified, in this program. One part that was completely new to me, was the classification for the Common european Framework. I can understand "basic"" or ""proficient"" but I wonder how the creators of the framework chose the middle three names (A2-B2) because ""waystage"" or ""vantage"" are not words I would have personally associated with language learning."

In this unit, I have learned that it is very important for the teacher to know how to actively change roles while delivering a lesson. This is in order to have students engaged, motivated, and concentrated all the time on their learning progress. Besides, there are many factors in our students that we have to take into consideration in order to be able to secure success (as much as possible) in language learning for them. Finally, I also learned the importance of understanding the different language proficiency levels. this is mostly because the teacher's role within the classroom will be very different depending on the level of learners he/she has.

I have learnt that a good teacher needs to be patient, kind, have a passion for teaching and must have a good knowledge of their subject. A teacher also needs to know when to take on a specific role in the classroom such as an assessor, manager, organizer , model and observer. Learners must be willing to learn English, ask questions, accept error correction and participate in class activities. It is also important to be aware of the differences between the age groups in a class by taking into account the life experience, age, motivation for studying English, nervousness and behaviour problems. In conclusion I have also learned that there are six levels of language competency and it is important to determine on what level the class is.

During my study of unit 1 I have obtained a good overview of how to approach teaching English to non-native English speakers, how to approach different levels of knowledge and different age and level of students. It is the basic cornerstone for teaching English abroad.The knowledge found in unit 1 is particularly helpful due to the fact that one should be very careful and aware of the role one plays as teacher to specific groups of students, and what to focus on in certain circumstances. For instance, when to approach a student but still not get too involved that it ruins the student's own initiative, creativity and willingness to learn themselves.

There were many things I had learned from unit one. First, I learned about the differences between Adult learners and young learners. Before the course, I did not know that Young Learners were divided into three groups based on age: Young (seven years old and below), Pre-puberty (eight to 13 years old), and Early Teens (14 to 18 years old). Having had experience in teaching only certain age groups, it was interesting to note the differences in each group in ways of motivation, nervousness, the ways each group learn a new language, etc. Also, I was surprised by how many roles a teacher plays. The course did a very detailed break-down of the roles, and made me aware of all the different roles I have played in my own classroom, along with other roles I felt I should really focus on more.

By looking at the qualities of the teacher, we learned how they can greatly affect the learner both positively and negatively. There are many different levels of learners and many different levels of knowledge when it comes to learning a new language, so as a teacher it is important to recognize the broad spectrum and adapt to that in order to engage all learners. The final message I took from this unit was that a good teacher will have good students.

The overlying lesson I learned from this unit is that teachers need to be adaptive to many circumstances, such as class activity and which role must be played, student language ability, and student background.

I learnt that in order to be a good teacher, I must possess a degree of common sense as to what role I should play during class, and when I should play it. I should always be kind and encourage the students when they are struggling, but that does not always mean giving out the answers freely. Sometimes, I should allow the students to figure out the answers for themselves by prompting them with further questions. I should motivate the students by keeping the course interesting by incorporating fun activities once I have given them the knowledge to participate in the activity. Therefore, there are times when I should take over the class, but afterwards, I should allow them to test their abilities on their own or with their classmates. However, even when they are working on their own, I should be available in case they have questions, as a good learner should do. I also learnt about the levels of language proficiency, and the different motivations a student may have to take an English language course.

From this unit I have learnt that the teacher should care about his teaching but caring about learners should be even more important to him/her. The teacher should know all the teaching roles and be able to move from one into another appropriately. Some of the roles has its place in the classroom more often while others shouldn't be overused. There are a number of qualities that are taken into consideration while looking at learners, such as age, culture differences, learning experience, life experience, motivation, nervousness, language awareness and behaviour problems. The teacher should know what kind of approach to use while teaching students from different groups listed above. Students also have different levels of English and it should be also taking into consideration while teaching. Different English levels require different approach. There are also some aspects of motivation that students usually have when they are willing to learn English language, such as future career prospects, communication with colleagues, friends or partners, or travel purposes.

Not knowing quite what to expect, I found this unit very informative as easy to read. I found that the descriptions were described really well and I was able to learn a lot from this. This unit has given me a good overview of the different parts of speech of a sentence: nouns, adjectives, verbs, articles, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns and prepositions/conjunctions. All of which with clear examples and tools on how to explain them to students. I believe that although the information on each one of them is elementary, it is sufficient to refresh your memory knowing that a more profound personal knowledge should be obtained through the studying of more specific manuals for language teachers.

Aloha, I can't believe how rusty I was in this section. Its been along time for basic word structure in my life. I don't recall ever learning about Infinitive's Gerund, Article's or all mean components of each, so that was a big lesson within itself. While I have a hard time understanding this material I think about how I would relate this information to students. I believe it would pose a challenge for me, bring it on adjective's. I still don't feel I have mastered 100% of every part of speech but I am on my way.

It's fascinating how I just let my grammar flow without actually realizing I'm using so many complex verb forms. It takes a long time to actually master fluency. Now I have more sympathy for my future students because I realize that it will not come naturally for them, and I will have to be patient and understanding. I liked this unit as it made me reflect on my knowledge of English grammar. There are a lot of small rules in grammar that I don't even realize I'm using when I speak, but when these rules are on paper it forced me to look closer at the reasons why I use these rules. I had never heard of a gerund Before, so this is one new term I have learned from this lesson.

The content of this unit allowed me to review the English grammar and showed me some of the rules that somehow I had forgotten. Usually, I applied only common sense to the way I spoke and wrote English, and it made me feel unsure about my abilities to explain the correct usage of allt he parts of speech. I will further continue reviewing the correct usage of all the different parts of speech but more specifically the exceptions that could confuse many students. Knowing how to analyze a sentence and knowing how to explain all the different parts of the sentences is the key to becoming a better teacher.

The usage descriptions helped in focusing on what is most important for instructional purposes. Adjectives in particular was extensive to be clear on its elementary use.

This unit really helped me to break down the fundamentals of English grammar in a way that I Haven't for a while. Though the content of the unit seemed a bit daunting to remember at first, it eventually became pretty rote as I realized that it simply described things that I previously understood but didn't have a Name for. My experience with grammar has been more relational than technical; I can generally discern good or bad grammar, but I find it difficult to pinpoint exactly how it's skillful or not. With the aid of this unit, I can explain my reasoning better.
