This unit gave a good insight into what qualities a teacher should cultivate in herself/himself. It also gave insight into the qualities in the student that the teacher needs to encourage. The material covered areas that will give clues as to the expected success or failure of a student, particularly if that student has very little motivation or interest in learning and is in the course not by choice but because it is mandatory.
Knowledge is given as to what to possibly expect from different age groups that one may be teaching.
The levels of English ability and the descriptions will be useful in assessing where an individual student is and that leads to better being able to determine a lesson plan for that student.

Some of the things I learned from Unit 1 are:
- What makes a good teacher. Specifically a good teacher should have knowledge of their subject, an ability to motivate students, and fair to all students.
- The different roles of a teacher, including: Manager/controller, organizer, assessor, prompter, participant, tutor, resource/facilitator, model, observer/monitor. I also learned that as a teacher, I will need to be flexible and change my role according to the activity and desired result of the students.
- What makes a good learner, including things such as a desire to learn, a desire to experiment with the language and a willingness to ask questions.
- Some factors that contribute to being a good learner are age, culture, language level and motivation for learning.
Within age there are multiple factors including things such as learning experience, life experience, nervousness, behavior problems, and motivation.
o Within culture I learned that different cultures have different approaches to learning and the teacher needs to be sensitive to these. In addition there are many language levels including: beginners (breakthrough, basic user, A1), elementary (waystage, basic user, A2), Low/pre-intermediate (threshold, independent user, B1), intermediate (vantage, independent user, B2), upper intermediate (effective, operational proficiency, proficient user, C1), advanced (mastery, proficient user, C2).
o Within motivation there are many important factors such as future career decisions, ability to travel or live in English speaking countries. ",

The unit was very helpful giving basic information regarding teaching/learning roles, levels of English language and forms of teaching. It is as essential being a good teacher as well as very motivated learner. Definitely a very good base to start building better teaching techniques and language understanding. Information every teacher can benefit from. I have learnt that a good teacher has many roles, which help students to learn. They must be kind, professional and engage the students. The keeps the students motivated, asking questions, and allows them to learn best. Students language abilities are also varied, so it is important to understand the level of the student to tailor the teaching level. This unit covers the basic qualities of teachers and learners while providing identifications of positive teacher qualities and various types of students. Upon reflection, this unit has helped me identify what qualities are my strongest when in the classroom.

A teacher plays many roles. The roles of organizer and facilitator are probably the most important here at UIC. The biggest problems that the students have is a lack of practice, so I will probably need to spend a lot of time creating activities for them.
Ages range from
young learners to adults. Different age groups have different strengths and weaknesses. The students I will
work with at UIC have a problem with lack of motivation. They are in this English-speaking college, because their parents forced them to be there, not by their own choice.
Language levels range from beginner to advanced.
I should probably be careful not to correct the students too much. They are already very nervous about asking or answering questions in class.

I feel that I have learned how to apply the different roles as a teacher to adapt to different situations such as prompting a student to encourage their confidence in their English ability and further their motivation to study. I have learned a great deal about how to classify different levels of English learners to help target their English level more effectively and prepare suitable lessons. I feel I have learned more about how adult learners compare to younger learners, especially with the way they view language. Adults tend to compare with their native language to provide the best direct translation which is easier for them to study, whereas younger learners that have not yet grasped the structure of their native language tend to take the language in context as it is used in the classroom.

This unit covered some of the traits of good teachers and good learners. It also gave a brief overview of the different levels of English learners, from beginner to advanced, and some basic, but flexible, expectations for each. It gave some quick insights as to where certain problems may arise in a class. For example, if the teacher cannot or does not allocate their own roles well, they can cause confusion and misbehavior in the class. I felt it was a good place to start and it will most likely be important to review it frequently so I can be sure my expectations are not too high or low for my classes. As a broad overview, I felt it was very useful and not too dense to begin with.

The main focus of this unit was understanding what makes a good teacher and a good learner. In order to be a good teacher, the unit discussed how one should be interested in the content that is being taught, interested in their students, and they should be kind and approachable in order to maintain a relaxed and comfortable classroom environment. They also should also be motivating their students to do their best, and not be so focused on correcting student errors as it will make the student nervous and not willing to experiment with the language. Their are many roles that a teacher may take on in the classroom. These roles should be balanced and used when appropriate. Some different roles are the facilitator, the monitor, the participant, the tutor, the model, the observer, the prompter, the organizer, and the assessor. Some important qualities for a learner are to be a good listener, participator, willing to ask questions, a desire to learn, and being able to accept their own errors. This unit also discussed different age levels of learners and how age may effect their learning and ability to learn a new language. There was also discussion of the common
european framework levels that are A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2. These frameworks will be helpful in the future to pinpoint what level a student is at with their language.

This first unit was helpful in building a foundation for what defines a good teacher, a good learner, and the relationship between the two. For example, a good teacher is patient, kind, educated about the language they are teaching, is skilled at finding ways to motivate students to learn, and provides appropriate feedback/corrections while helping to build language skills. A good student, on the other hand, is a good listener, asks questions when they are confused or need clarification, is unafraid to make errors, and reflects on their learning style in order to improve. It is important for the teacher/student relationship to build a strong rapport. The teacher needs to understand how cultural histories, age, and other factors affect learning outcomes in order to assess how to build a syllabus, interact with students from different backgrounds, and teach different ages. It is also important to understand the fluency level of the students in order to create appropriate lesson plans and activities that challenge but do not overwhelm them. Finally, understanding students' motivation to learn English provides helpful information in building lessons plans and creating a rapport with the students. For example, a 14 year old student may want to learn English to understand their favorite pop songs coming from the US. Lesson plans may involve using pop songs to make general points about grammar and word usage. In this unit I have learned that being a good teacher isn't just imparting knowledge, but that being a good teacher involves a love of teaching, motivating your students, being patient and kind, among other qualities. The point that stood out for me the most in this unit was the many roles the teacher plays depending on the circumstances in the class. I have desired to be a teacher for sometime and have often thought about what would make a good teacher (patient, knowledgeable, fair, charismatic, motivating, etc.) and that students of different ages would require different methods or would be more or less challenging depending on the age and/or circumstance, but I've never really thought about what the teacher actually 'does' during a class. I found the roles the teacher plays during the class (manager, observer, organiser, assessor, prompter, participant, tutor, facilitator and model) so interesting because, though a simple concept, it is exactly what a teacher does every class, yet I have never thought about it

In this section I got to know what a good student is, and what a good teacher is.
The different roles of a teacher were explained, roles such as manager, facilitator and tutor. This first unit also talked about in which situation it is best to use different roles, as well as when to be careful of not over using the role.
The second part of the unit thought me about what differences there are between young and adult learners, especially in terms of learning and life experience, motivation, nervousness and behavior. This unit put special emphasis on the motivations adults have to learn a new language.
Lastly this unit introduced the different language levels and how to recognize which level your student belongs to.

I liked how each part of speech gave number of examples to example what they were. Also the formulas for each part of speech helped me understand how each of them are formed and where they are used and how to determine the difference between each part of speech. For an example like countable and uncountable nouns. In this unit I have understood how to analyze sentences into nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs, articles, pronouns, prepositions and gerunds. I've learnt the definition of each one and the different categories they each have. Also i have a basic understanding of how to explain each category to students in a simple, comprehensive manner. The parts of speech unit was very helpful because as a native English speaker I often forget the various parts of speech and how they are used. I was not familiar with the term gerund used for -ing words or what an intransitive verb was although I use it daily.

This Unit was a wonderful review of the Parts of speech in the English language. It was simple to follow and I really enjoyed going into more depth about each part of speech and in a sense relearning some of the very basic rules I may have forgotten. I have learned so much from this lesson and really look forward to future lessons. The one area that was actually new to me was the Gerunds, I do not remember learning those or at least that
Name so it was interesting learning the rules to Gerunds. I also loved the part in this Unit that taught us how we can help students learn the different Adverbs by different games because Adverbs are very hard to understand and those games are wonderfully when introducing the subject of Adverbs to students.

This course was very useful in providing a review of many of the common English parts of speech. Many of these things one instinctively knows, but is unsure of what the terms are called or the rules governing them. This makes it very useful to have this course lay it all out in clear and simple language. This unit makes light of the complexity of the English grammar. A detailed explanation of types of nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, conjunctions, etc., together with many examples, gave me an opportunity to review that which I already knew and to reflect on its importance for students learning the English language. This section is an overview of basic English grammar. I feel this unit was useful in helping me reestablish my grammar knowledge. I feel confident that I already knew everything here, but I have also remembered things that I had slightly forgotten.

Was a while ago that i followed an English grammar course. The examples made it clear. English is my second language, but i noticed the my grammar knowledge is not bad at all. The problem i encounter is naming every word and explaining why it is like that. This is something i need to
work on. I'm a writer, so I wasn't too worried about my use and knowledge of grammar, but it was helpful to have a refresher on some of the rules, and easy ways to explain the rules.
