On the whole I believe this was a good introduction to the course and mentioning the problems (age, culture, etc.) many teachers encounter when teaching English as a second language. One of the biggest problems I have encountered is correction with older adult students who continue to make the same mistakes. I recommend notes but sadly the recommendation often not followed through with on their part.

In this unit I have learned about various topics on teachers and students. I have learned qualities that make a good teacher, most important being fairness, a good subject knowledge, motivating and really cares about teaching but more so for the student?s education. I have learned there are certain roles that a teacher must fulfill during a lesson, and depending on the activity the role may change. It is important to know which role you, as a teacher, are to fulfill and when to implement it. The most important among those roles are Manager, Organizer, Assessor, Prompter, and Model. I have also learned that there are some key characteristics that make a good learner, such as the willingness to listen to English, a desire to learn, ask questions, make mistakes, and experiment with English and also to accept errors and correction. There are also different types of categories of learners, those being the three categories of young learners; the pre and post puberty, and the preschool age, and then there are adult learners. Preschool aged children, tend to have lower attention spans but they like to play, pre-puberty students tend to be receptive and not worried about making mistakes, while post puberty tend to have peer pressure and afraid to take risks. Adult learners have fixed expectations and already have life experiences. I have also learned about the five different levels of learning; the beginner with very little knowledge, the elementary with basic knowledge of simple sentence, the Pre-intermediate, the Intermediate, the Upper Intermediate and the Advanced. In this unit, Teachers and Learners, I was introduced to a variety of qualities a good teacher should possess and share with their students. Each quality was described in great detail and also provided a reason as to how it can affects the ability a student has to learn. Qualities of a good learner was a topic that was also addressed in this unit. Each quality, such as the having the desire to learn a new language, demonstrates how being a good learner is just as important as being a good teacher. There are various types of learners and it is essential to understand and show positive motivation when teaching young and adult learners. I learnt about how the age difference between each group of students can affect the learning process and why each group is so different. young learners, such as children and adolescents, are known to lack some motivation and have short attention spans while adult learners are more prone to having difficulties adapting to new teaching methods but are more motivated to learn due to objectives such as employment and travels. Each level of language abilities was also presented and described, from beginners to advanced. It was also discussed as to why students may want to learn the English language. I believe this first unit has definitely opened up my minded a bit more in regards to becoming an English teacher. As someone who has a passion for helping others I truly consider a good teacher to have all these qualities noted because without a good teacher a student would very much struggle to learn, but without a good learner a good teacher would be of no use.

Unit One covered the basics of what multiple roles a teacher possesses and the attributes of what makes a good teacher and good learner. I learned that the teacher has many roles such as managing, tutoring, prompting etc. and I look forward to learning in depth on how to develop my skills in the different roles. I also learned how to assess different learners and the advantages and disadvantages that come with different backgrounds of the learners. Willingness and effort are the two biggest keys to a good learner and it made me realize that I lack these two elements in my own language learning experiences when it comes to korean but I do have them when it comes to spanish. The most important points that inspired me was that a teacher should care more about the students' learning than his or her own teaching and that the teacher should be enthusiastic about the subject.

It taught me that I need to ensure that all my classes are interesting and enjoyable so that I can build motivation in my students. Before I started this course I took the learning of the language for granted as I easily learned and spoke the language in no time. But as I have read in the unit it is a two way communication; as a teacher never get ahead of the learner,base your method according to how the learner will adapt it later on in their lives and keep pace with them and not be as an authoritative figure at all times but someone who is knowledgeable and someone who emits an aura of someone they can feel comfortable in asking questions and most of all requiring as much patience as I can as there are different levels of learners depending on age,culture and motivation the students have for themselves. I think it's best to try different activities according to different learners in order for the students to digest and apply the learning of the language.

In this Unit, I know exactly the roles of Mine when Im in the class. This is what I do every day, in every class, but I don't know that I've played many important roles like that. Besides, I know more about students' level, which I didn't pay attention to heretofore. The content is compact but informative. I feel that I have learned much from unit one about what it means to be a teacher and also what motivates people to learn English. For example one may be motivated to learn English for a job, or to travel the world, or even just for his own edification. I have also learned about the differences between teaching adults and children; the motivation and attention span for an adult learner may be higher than for a child, however an adult's experiences have shaped his perception of the class, whether for good or ill. It became clear how important a balance is within the classroom. I learned new things in this chapter which surprised me because I was not expecting to learn anything new from the simple grammar unit. Once you understand how sentences are formed you can create form examples for students to alter and use. It is amazing how many rules and exceptions there are in English grammar. It was interesting to learn the names for the parts of speech I use daily in both personal communication as well as teaching. Though I am not a normal ESL teacher (actually a science and math teacher in South Korea) I now feel confident that if any of my students were to ask grammar questions I could field them correctly.

This unit was a great review of material I learned years ago. I realized how much I take for granted in my speech. I'm accustomed to speaking without considering actual parts of speech. This lesson also made me realize how very difficult it is going to be to fully explain the English language to those do not speak English. In this unit we worked on English grammar. I already knew a bit(irregular verbs, nouns, verbs, adjectives and so on) but, I've learned what a gerund is. Also I learned about prepositions and conjuctions(the preposition placement). i did learn how to start off a class that has zero knowledge of the English language, the example given in the review really set things into perspective for me, on how to start off an English lesson for beginners. I learned a lot about basic grammar and parts of speech in this unit. It was a good refresher of material that I felt that I had forgotten about since Elementary School. I feel that although I use it as part of my natural, everyday speech, I am not aware of why I use it or what is it for. Grammar is very foundational.

This is Unit 2 a wonderful unit that covers some of the basics of grammar and allows the student to get details needed to be a great tefl instructor in the future. I personally enjoyed this unit very much and hope I did well with the details. I had to go over the finite details and refreshed on details of adverb, adjective, conjunction, prepositions, and the basic noun, verb and more. This information will be used more for this course and in the future studies I look forward to.
