This lesson examined the responsibilities and roles of good teachers and students. In summary, a good teacher should be kind, patient, a motivator, knowledgeable, a corrector, and love teaching. Possessing these qualities are important because a teacher must delegate authority and demonstrate responsibility but at the same time be gentle and show encouragement. In addition to possessing these qualities, a good teacher should be an assessor and a prompter because it shows encouragement, which students need. A good learner should be eager to learn and listen the language, open to experiment with it, able to accept error corrections, active, willing to ask questions when unsure. According to their age learners can be devided into young leraners and adults. These categories are quiet different in terms of motivation, experience and behaviour.
young learners lack the attention span that's why it's important to make a class interesting and entertaining in order to make the learning process effective. Adults are more motivated to learn , since they took a decision to learn the language by themselves because of some economical reasons, desire to travel, interest in learning languages etc. Young learners rarely take a desicion to learn a foreign language independently, mostly they are motivated by willingness to please their teachers or parents or just have no choice being obliged to study this subject at school.
Adults have a greater life experience as well as a greater lerning eperience, that's why they come to the classroom with certain expectations. Young learners are not burdened with previous learning experience which lets them be open to new learning methods. Very young learners do not fear to make mistakes while teenagers of 14-18 years old and adults are quiet reluctant to take risks in front of other people.
Learners can possess different levels of ability in the English language such as: starter( having no previous experience in this language at all or a very basic knowledge), elementary ( basic knowledge of subject and verb and basic vocabulary), pre-intermediate (being able to discuss a number of topics, still making basic mistakes), intermediate ( being able to discuss a wide range of topics but still lacking in accuracy and fluency), upper-intermediate (being fluent enough but still lacking in accuracy), advanced ( a very good knowledge of the language, studying some subtle language issues)

This unit relayed several key aspects good teachers, and good learners should demonstrate. I have always believed the most important aspect to an amazing teacher is their ability to ignite the curiosity and motivation of their students. It described the different skill levels students may have, making me realize and understand the potential for having students of varying skill level in the same class. Additionally this unit described the various factors associated with a students ability to learn, including: age, learning experience, motivation, nervousness, language awareness, behavior problems, life experience, culture and first language, and language level. There are so many factors which contribute to how the course should be taught, and how successful your students will be throughout the course. Overall, this unit had a lot of important information that jumpstarted my 'teacher' mindset.

In this unit we reviewed types of teachers, types of learners, the relationship between teachers and learners, and variables that affect learning. I think the section on the various roles that teachers play was interesting to read because I don't often reflect on my own role in the classroom as often as I think about the various ways my students perform. I have learnt that a good teacher should be kind/patient/a good organizer/enthusiastic/motivates the students/loves teaching but most of all cares about his/her students and should be sensitive, gentle and encouraging when he/she interacts with the students and when he/she remarks on their errors. There are different types of students and depending on their age/language level/
degree of motivation and culture they need a different approach and different learning methods. For example a beginner in the age range of 7-10 needs a complete different approach and learning method than an advanced adult needs. The relationship between student/teacher is very important and depends on a lot of factors which the teacher has to take in mind in order to be a good teacher. The teacher should act during each lesson, depending on the level, topic and willingness of today's students, differently. There are moments the teacher needs to act more as a facilitator rather than a controler/manager. Or at another moment during the same lesson he/she will be participating instead of monitoring. A movited, sensitive, caring and enthousiastic teacher who knows when and how to use his/her tools/menthods will most likely have students who will attend his/her lessons with enthousiasm and joy.

I always knew that a teacher has several different roles, but thought of it as more of a combination of all the listed roles at all times. Seeing it listed and how each role is used in different situations taught me that each role definitely has a time and place and sometimes shouldn't be used at all at certain points in lessons. Also, seeing the differences between adult and child learners laid out made me think more on how different teaching strategies have to be between the two groups.

This unit covered the eight different roles of a good teacher; manager, organizer, assessor , participant, tutor, resource, model and observer. Its important to be able to distinguish which role one should take and to be able to flow from one role to another. There are many factors that one needs to consider of english learners such as age and culture. It is beneficial for the student and the teacher to encourage motivation and identify successful characteristics in students. There are different stages or levels in new language; beginners, elementary, low intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate and advanced.

In Unit 1, I learned about the basic qualities of a good teacher and learner. Good teachers are patient and kind. They love teaching and care about their students. They have a good rapport with their students and are able to motivate them to learn. Good teachers also have good subject knowledge. Good language learners are motivated and have a desire to learn. They ask questions and experiment with the language. They regularly listen to the language being spoken and they ask questions if they do not understand. They are also willing to accept error correction with a good attitude.
I also learned about the different roles that a teacher can fulfill on a given day, depending upon the subject matter and method of instruction. Some of these roles include facilitator, manager-controller, model, tutor, participant, monitor, and prompter.
Another subject area that was covered in Unit 1 was the differences between adult and young language learners. Adult language learners tend to be more motivated because they have made the decision to study themselves. They generally have more learning experience and language awareness. They also tend to bring with them a longer history of past failures and greater expectations.
young learners tend to be more open minded. They have less of an attention span and can sometimes have more behavior problems. Teens between the ages of 13-18 tend to be the most difficult language students because they are self-conscious and unwilling to take risks. The youngest language learners from age seven and below will have the shortest attention span and will respond well to learning through games and songs.
Another important subject that was covered was the levels that language learners are categorized by and their descriptions. These include the Beginner, Elementary, Low/Preintermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate & Advanced. Europe has a corresponding system using different terms with similar descriptions.
Finally, I learned some of the reasons why students are motivated to study English. These include increased
job opportunities, world travel, desire to study in an English speaking nation, communicating with friends and colleagues, and interest in foreign languages.

As an experienced English teacher I could relate to a lot of what was being said in this first unit. I found the different varying levels of mastery when it comes to English interesting. I found myself double guessing when looking at the final few questions since they required me to imagine the scenario. This unit covers the qualities of a good English teacher, and that of a student; as well as helpful tips for each section/quality.
I have really enjoyed this session - certainly given me some things to think about applying to lessons, and a perspective of both the teacher and the learner. Students vary by age and ability. Each age group may display different dynamics

The students learning experience can be a reflection of both the teachers qualities/teaching style, as well as the students motivation and approach to learning. If the teacher is patient, reliable, a good prompter, organizer, and manager etc, as well as understands their topic etc, and the student is motivated, willing to listen, practice (even when it means making mistakes) etc, then it creates an effective teaching and learning experience.

In this unit, I've gained a basic understanding of the various roles of a teacher. I learned that there is no universal approach to teaching English and as a teacher, we must be very adaptable to our students. it is important for us to apply a variety of methods when dealing with different students from different cultures, and even for students on an individual level. I've also learned that there are significant differences to the ways students respond to our teaching methods because of their age and culture.

I feel that this unit provided a decent and informative review of English grammar. It is surprising how even native English speakers do not know a lot of the explanations and/or rules of the English language. We become so comfortable with our native speech, that it is not rare to find someone who doesn't think about the "why"" in regards to how we structure our sentences/words. I personally think it would be horrid if an ESL instructor couldn't adeqantely explain a basic grammar rule and merely instruct the student to memorize it or provide ""it just is"" as an explanation. However

This unit discussed the basics of grammar usage in the English language. It provided details examples of each
Type of word in the English language (i.e, noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb, conjunction, preposition, etc.). I understand grammar usage and how to effectively explain it to students. I learned from this unit the different parts of speech in English. I learned the different rules for different parts of speech. Even though I frequently use English, mistakes can still be made. This unit helps to improve the English accuracy. Even though this was mostly review, I did learn about the many different types of parts of speech. I learnt that no all adjectives are the same and neither are nouns. However, my question is: "Will the students not only pick this up It is important to learn and identify the parts of speech for us to better understand and make gramamatically correct sentences. This unit was more of a refresher lesson on the standard areas of grammar which the EFL instructor will be teaching. This unit dissected the standard parts of speech, namely articles, nouns, adjectives, verbs and adverbs. It also broke down each part of speech into their respective subcategories. It also outlines the different tenses. It was a good refresher for me. I feel it has given me the general boundaries for which I can begin planning my lessons.

Grammar is not my strongest subject . I learned that there were some special rules whether it was for adjectives or for adverbs and that you needed to make sure to place and use them in the correct way so that the sentence had a sense. This chapter also made me review the verbs with their different use (transitive or intransitive) and the list of irregulars.
I learned about the difference between transitive and intransitives verbs. I also discovered that differentiations were made between the articles (definite and indefinite), the nouns (countable and uncountable, proper nouns, personal nouns etc.)as well as the different types of adjective and and adverb.
I learned about conjunctions and prepositions with their types (time/
Date, movement, etc.) and usage (join clauses of sentence, join words of the same class). It also allowed me to review the gerunds (-ing form of a verb used as a noun) and pronouns (words used instead of more precise nouns or noun phrases).

As a native speaker, it is easy to become numb or less aware to the intricacies of English grammar, which we often take for granted in our daily lives. This review of Parts of Speech was helpful for me in identifying how to explain the basic functions of English grammar for someone who is not familiar at all with the subject. As a general reference, Unit Two will be critical to master in order to effectively teach basic grammar structures and parts of a basic sentence.

I can see where the learning of the English language would prove problematic for someone whose wasn't raised speaking it. The
Name of the different words into the different parts of a sentence does not come easy for me so this is something that I will have to
work on. I thought the chapter covered a lot of information and material in a very concise manner. I also think that the
videos help out. The exercises for our future student were good ideas I hope the following unit all have similar idea and suggestions such as these as well.

This unit is particular valuable to me because it covers one of my weakest areas, which is the proper classification and utilization of parts of speech. Grammar is not a topic I have much school-based experience in practicing. Somehow I always managed to not be enrolled in the course that offered extensive sentence structure and grammar lessons. I find the topic confusing because of the variables and exceptions that exist in the English language. These variables also frustrate me. However, this unit broke the topic down well enough that I feel I grasp the subject a bit better than
Before. I will continue to study outside of this course as well.

I found it very interesting to revise the 'Parts of Speech' after so many years. The best way to write better English is to know what the rules are. However, all rules are not hard and fast rules and there are exceptions to the written rules which makes English more complicated in different contexts. The key here is to know which rule to apply and when to apply it.

Prior to this unit I honestly had no idea what the majority of the types of speech are. I only had a basic understanding of a noun, an adjective, and a verb. Everything is has been new to me. I always viewed the parts of speech as unnecessary information that I had no need to understand. Quite clearly, when learning English these things ARE important. I couldn't expect to teach a student how to form a sentence with no real explanation as to why the words have to be put in a certain order. This is a unit I intend to come back to again and again when teaching.

This unit covers the basic grammatical structure of our language. It covers the majority of simple sentence structure and thoroughly explains the classifications of the the words in formed sentences. I find that this section was extremely useful in helping me to identify certain grammatical
features, such as the ordering of adjectives and adverbs. This section also helped me to review, in detail, the different types and usages of of English grammar. It is often easy to identify a verb or an article, but explaining the difference between a transitive verb, or intransitive verb, is often difficult. I felt this made things easier to explain. Additionally, the lists of words is also helpful.
