The unit mentioned that knowing the different types of students, and their needs, can serve as a cue for how teachers should prepare their material. This unit was a helpful reminder to me of the responsibility of a teacher in the classroom. It was also good for me to learn the various roles of a teacher.

I've realised that in a single class there can be a wide variety of different levels of skill and that as the instructor you will have to arrange your lesson to fit each level of understanding. Unit one talks generally about what characteristics make good teacher and the different roles a teacher is required play in order to give their students the best possible learning results. The unit also differentiates between different students and their various stages of language knowledge giving you the basic tools to better accustom your teaching style to the learners individual needs.
A good teacher will show the following characteristics (amongst others):
Motivating, loves teaching, has good subject knowledge, able to involve all students equality, shows respect for individual culture and needs, cares about being a great teacher but cares more about the learning of the students.
The Role of the teacher can vary greatly within a teaching session. This means the teacher may be required to be more student centered or teacher centered depending on the task at hand . It is important for a teacher to know which role they must play at the right time. These roles can be broken down into categories:
A manager, an organiser, an assessor, a prompter, a participant, a tutor, a facilitator, a model and a monitor.
Unit 1 also goes into detail about the different student learning levels by outlining their perceived motivation, experience and behavioral aspects. These differences are usually determined by age levels however there may be variations between the students? age and their learning ability.
The age levels are generally categorized as follows:
2 to 7 years, 8 to 13 years, 14 to 18 years and adults.
The five learning levels are:
1. Starter (True: no experience at all and Starter: Some previous experience)
2. Elementary (Basic knowledge of subject/verb and basic vocabulary)
3. Pre-Intermediate (Should be able to discuss a number of topics with basic errors)
4. Intermediate (Should be able to discuss a large range of topics but with will have issues with fluency and accuracy)
5. Upper Intermediate (Will be able to discuss virtually anything with good fluency however may still have some issues with accuracy)
Overall, I feel that to successfully to be a good teacher you must be able to relate well to people, enjoy
working with others and understand the fundamentals of teaching and the difference between student learner requirements.

Through this lesson, I've learned that teacher's priority should be the students not their desire for teaching. Although a teacher should have a love for teaching, it should not outweigh the teacher's care for the learners, which requires a good amount of flexibility and patience. The most i took from this section is on the roles teachers have. From being a class manager, organizer, assessor, prompting to help, participating in class activities, being a tutor, a decent role model to the students and to correctly monitor the class and take appropriate actions. This unit has taught me the basic characteristics of what makes a good teacher. I have also gained insight to the many roles that teachers take on while managing a classroom. Many of these roles, you wouldn't consider as a passive observer, but surprisingly, a teacher jumps from role to role throughout the course of one class. Just as it's important to reflect on the good qualities that teaching calls for, it is important to observe the various characteristics that define a good learner (willingness to learn, desire to learn, ability to ask questions when unsure, and to take criticism). There could be different challenges presented by teaching adult learners versus
young learners. Adult learners tend to be more set in their ways, and are used to a specific method of teaching, thus it might be more difficult to convince them of your methods. Nonetheless, the positives outweigh the negatives, and adult learners are usually more eager and motivated to learn about the subject since they have willingly signed up for the course themselves. They present fewer behavioral challenges than young learners. I have also learned it's important to take into consideration the various language levels students may be on. Creating lesson plans that will match the levels are important, to keep students interested, motivated, and challenged. This unit did a good
job of describing the various characteristics that I should be striving for as a teacher, and the characteristics I should be looking out for and encouraging to produce great learners.

Types of students means that it is essential to take into account the age, culture, personality type, motivations and learning style of the student. For example, when teaching in certain
asian countries it is important to remember that in the Asian culture it is respectful to the teacher to only communicate once being summoned. If there is little understanding of the cultural practices it will cause teachers to feel unappreciated and unfulfilled in their daily
job objectives (possibly due to little class participation) and students to feel demotivated and confused if the teacher becomes despondent. Therefore with the understanding of cultural differences comes with a responsibility of the teachers to pursue techniques to allows for problems of little class participation and other problems to be solved. Age, motivations and learning styles are also important factors to consider since this affects the time management, activities and pace of the lessons. As a teacher it's important to improvise and accommodate the different types of learning techniques. Audio learners as well as visual learners should experience and be able to participate in the variety of activities designed by the teacher to aid correct and efficient learning practices. Having a good understanding of the various levels of knowledge of the english language, is one of the most essential aspects to consider in your classroom. Teaching at the correct stage of knowledge and at the correct pace is very important. Asking every individual to express themselves and communicate often and freely will help to gain knowledge of what level they are at. Teaching at a pace that is too slow may
work for some, but is demotivating for other interested and ready learners that already know the course content. Teaching too quickly results in learners to become uncommunicative, withdrawn, embarrassed and confused. These learners will also not feel comfortable saying that they are not keeping up with the pace of the lesson, which creates more of problem and is therefore essential for the teacher to do continual
assessment and monitoring of student progress. Building a rapport with every student allows for efficient and effective problem solving in all areas of teaching the most predominant language spoken of the world. The learners responsibilities are not overlooked in this unit as seen by reference to 'good' leaners. Even though the teacher has a lot more responsibility in the learning cycle with regards to guiding class discussions, class content and activities as well as ensuring the learners obtain the optimum level of performance, it is the student who is to maintain consistency, self-motivation and attendance. If all the above objectives are to be met then the wonderful gift of the english language can be shared and celebrated amongst all nations, cultures and individuals who are exposing themselves to the great and infinite opportunities that await their curious desires.

The difference in skill and motivation for students and what to think about when teaching these students. Unit 1 was informative and I really enjoyed the way that the role of the teacher was broken into 5 parts. I often feel this way while teaching. In addition to defining the
job of the teacher, unit 1 also helped clarify the differences in students. Age, sex, and culture are all very important in understanding how to communicate with our students. I feel that upon completing this module I have a greater understanding of what it takes to be a good teacher and also what makes a good student. It shows what makes an effective teacher and student in a foreign language classroom. This section also shows the different types of roles that a teacher might take in the course of a lesson. The instructor in the
video gives examples of what a teacher might say and what role that would be. Finally, the unit discusses the different levels and types of learners. It shows the difference between the language levels and how age factors in learning a language.
The main thing I learned from this unit is about the roles a teacher takes. I have often seen these roles in class, but I did not know the names for these roles. I have now begun to understand what impact these roles have on the students of foreign languages. The other sections about levels and types of learners provided further insight into what type of students I might have in my classes.",

From previous teaching experience, there was not much new content for me to learn. However, it did nicely layout the major teacher roles in a succinct manor.

I felt this unit was important in understanding the many roles a teacher has. This helps you, as a teacher, adopt different methods of teaching so as to implement certain roles. This, in turn, will allow students to learn English through a variety of techniques and activities. Also, I thought it was important that the different language levels were broken down. This can help a teacher truly assess their students in a more effective manner.

The issues raised in this unit have made me more aware of the Teachers responsibilities to his/hers students and also to be patient with them and inject some fun into the lesson whenever possible.Also to be aware of the students background and culture. The roles of the teacher and learner are well defined. Age and the categories of
young learners was helpful as to their motivation and willingness to learn, also the breakdown of different ability levels is helpful to know. What I considered really important in this lesson is that "good teachers"" will most likely have ""good students""." It taught me about the roles i must do in a classroom ,which I only know about half of them . I was never told this when i was getting trained as ESL teacher. Also , I learned that i need to get better as teacher so my student will progress more in the classroom.

There are different types of learners, mainly adults and
young learners. Young learners have different levels of motivation and learning capabilities based on their age groups. The teacher must understand the different age groups and plan and facilitate their lessons to reflect this. For each of these age groups we must understand what level they are and how to motivate them to learn. Lessons must be pitched at the correct level in order for the students to be intested, motivated and enjoy the learning process of a second language. For adult learners this is the same and must be related to their life experiences and their level.
I am now aware of the different levels of language levels, Beginner, Elementary, low/ pre intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate and advanced. This is an indication of what knowledge and capabilities your students should have at each stage. This lesson provided me with information and examples of how good students and good teachers will act in a classroom. I learned about the different roles of the teacher as: manager, organizer, assessor, prompter, participant, tutor, facilitator, model and observer. I learned bout the different stages of a language learner: beginner, elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate, and advanced. I also learned about the different ages of students and how their learning styles change. Adults will have a more fixed view, may be set in their ways but will most likely be motivated to learn because they chose to sign up for the class, whereas young students will be more open-minded but may be lacking in motivation. Overall, this lesson provided a nice introduction to what it will be like to teach in the ELL world.

Excellent unit to begin providing clarity and setting the expectations as to the role of the teacher in the classroom. This unit also provides the reader with the opportunity to see if this is an area they wish to explore and master. I found the various subjects describing what is a good teacher extremely helpful as I feel that I definitely will fit into this

The unit also delved into the different aspects of what a teacher will find themselves doing during the course of any given lesson such as but not limited to; organizing the lesson plans and the class activities, being a prompter and understanding that it is very important not to spoon feed the students, but encourage them to ask questions and explore the various depths of the language. One of the most important aspect of this unit that I really took to heart is being knowledgeable on the subject matter and kind and patient, because Each student has their own learning curve and some will readily grasp the information presented while others may have some difficulty and a few may have a very hard time grasping the concept of the lesson. A good teacher will be able to identify each person within these groups by being involved and through monitoring and evaluation. A class is only as strong as its weakest student.

This unit outlines the key qualities of what both good teachers and learners need in order to succeed, the differences between students and the varying levels of learning that can be attained.
For educators the qualities needed are not only knowledge based which are of course vital but also dependant on personality, understanding the needs of the students and the desire to provide the best learning experience to them.
The role of the educator within the classroom will vary greatly and be dependent on the lesson being given and tasks that the students are required to complete, for example the educator may need to be an organiser, sorting the students into groups to fulfil a role play scenario, and after which take on an assessor role in order to provide the necessary feedback to those groups.
The students themselves have varying motivations for learning and will therefore respond differently in the classroom.
young learners will need more stimuli and be potentially more restless in class as study is mandatory and concentration levels are lower. Adult learners will be motivated to learn as study is a choice but may be more cautious when it comes to taking risks verbally in class.

I have learned from this unit that having knowledge and ability to communicate in English doesn't mean that you can be an English teacher. There are many other factors to be acquired by a person to be a teacher, or much better, a good teacher. I learned of the many teaching styles and how they should be used. Overuse of any one style can cause problems for the learners. Manager style teaching is the best way to get across new material
Before trying to get students to execute this in the classroom. There are multiple ways to facilitate student learning. A teacher can act as a organizer and create activities that will increase interaction and interest of the students. One can also be a prompter who gently guides students to their own conclusions. I have always appreciated this kind of help when I was a student. One of the most important things a teacher must do when teaching a language is have correct pronunciation and grammar in the classroom. You want a class to learn the right way to speak and write. A bad model can lead to many problems executing speech in the real world.
As for learners, not every teacher will get a class full of ideal learners but ideally you want a student who is motivated, has interest to learn and ask questions, and is willing to take advise and correct their mistakes. It is easiest for younger students to pick up a language. With younger students it is important for them to have an interesting teacher to capture attention and kindly help them though the learning process. The older you get, the harder it is to learn and retain a language. Many adults are afraid of making mistakes which inhibits the learning process. You need to make mistakes in order to grow and speak correctly. It is good to try to capture the reasons why a person is interested in learning a new language. The person who is learning for business may have different goals than the person who is doing it for fun. It is important to build lessons on the students motivation.

This unit concentrates on teachers and learners. It was exciting to be able to identify with the roles of a teacher in my own teaching experience. Equally important, teachers also need to have a very good understanding of the learners. Information on the experience, motivation, and language level of the learner will aid the teacher in tailoring lessons that will be more effective and productive for the students. Teachers who have a passion to teach will do all they can to develop their own skill sets for the benefit of the student. Ultimately, teaching is caring for the students and their success in language learning.

I have learned the basics of how to effectively teach English. I did not realize the six
american sublevels equated to
european sublevels. By learning this, I believe that it will make me a more competent English teacher because I will be able to effectively gauge a student's standing and thus help them where they are struggling most (it seems that beginners/elementary students struggle with grammar and sentence composition). This will definitely stay with me because it has directly targeted my own attempts at learning foreign languages and I will maintain what I have learned to teach others more effectively

After studying this unit, I've come to be able to put into words what a good teacher is and therefore be able to evaluate myself in order to become a better teacher. I ll hereby try and write a brief overview of this first unit content. I may say that this unit addressed the relationship between teachers and learners and their respective possible roles and characteristics. This unit gave an overview of what are to be considered good teachers qualities and different roles and methods to be used depending on different class situations. The unit also described different possible kind of students, depending on their age, motivation and cultural backgrounds, and the most common frameworks of level of ability in the English language ESL students may match. I can say from this unit I learned a clearer understanding of the common
european framework established by the European Council and a general clear idea on the teacher-student relationship.

Culture also plays a major role in teaching effectively since different countries have different styles of education which shapes the way students react in the classroom. The most valuable part of this unit was the examination of the different roles of a teacher. Obviously different roles are called for in different situations, but in my own experience I am now acutely aware of the need to avoid being a Controller for too much of the class. Some students may prefer to listen rather than speak due to cultural or individual qualities, but in the end it is not useful for their language learning goals. Therefore I believe more time should be devoted to being a Facilitator and Monitor/Observer so as to challenge students and provide them with proper feedback.

As I already have a master's
degree in English Linguistics, this is all too familiar for me. It took me 5 minutes to quickly go through the text and I didn't learn anything new. Now fingers crossed that I didn't make any lazy mistakes in the test. I must say that I find it easier to define these parts of speech, or any part of grammar for that matter, in English than in my native Dutch, as I learnt it analytically for the greatest part, rather than instinctively. Although I must also admit that I say and do a lot instinctively in Englisha nd have learnt to explain many things once I started teaching. Many things sounded natural and I had to consult my grammar reference book to explain certain things to my students. But after 6 years of practice, I rarely need my book any more.

I have learned that a simple sentence hardly ever exists. The labeling of every word in a sentence makes perfect sense after viewing the
video, and reading the unit 2 sections of the parts of speech. The list of irregular verbs are wonderful! It is important to emphasize to the learner that there are always exceptions to the rules in every language, and sometimes pure memorization is the only way to learn it.

We cannot avoid ?grammar? when we are trying to produce a sentence, native English speakers do not learn on purpose at school because it is their mother language, they speak as they grow. However, to non-native English speakers this might be difficult to master.
In a sentence, for example ?The fat boy is eating a hotdog on the ground.?, subject, verb, object, definite article, indefinite article, adjective, preposition and verb to be are the parts of speech. ?The (definite article) fat (adjective) boy (subject, noun) is (verb to be) eating (verb) a (indefinite article) hotdog (object, verb) on (preposition) the (definite article) ground (verb).
We add an ?s? to indicate plurals such as hands, hamsters and windows but if the noun ends in ?ch?, ?x?, ?sh?, we will need to add ?es? to indicate plurals such as inches, boxes and wishes. We need to state out the differences to students. When we describe an object with three or more descriptions, we need to put it in order, that is size, age, colour, material and lastly the noun.
There are two types of verbs that we need to keep in mind ? transitive and intransitive. A transitive verb is used to indicate when it is followed directly by an object and an intransitive verb is used to indicate when it cannot be followed directly by an object.
After completing this unit, I have thoroughly understand the types of parts of speech, and knowing what exceptions there are in some occasions.

This Unit covered basic grammar, which was very informative and spoken more as a linguist than as an English classroom in high school. All of this I vaguely remember from my early school days but the way it was presented this time stuck. It was helpful to see all the sub-categories of nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs and even be given an idea for a game to play with future students. Understanding the basic grammar of the function of a preposition to the difference between transitive and intransitive verbs makes the thought of teaching not so daunting. The material was given in a very straightforward manner with good examples and even better explanation, the task sheet at the end helped immensely at the end and I ended up having to review prepositions
Before testing.

This unit for me I found interesting,beening a teacher to
italian students, they always are curious about the grammer ,as in the italian schools it is taught a lot.I also never realized how to analize a sentence was so important, many interesting facts that I wasn't totally award that I also learned. This unit covered many of the different parts of grammatical structure. With much focus on written and spoken uses of grammar. It included the basics like nouns, verbs, and adverbs, to the more specific terms such as comparative adjectives and transitive verb. This unit featured a review in brief of the parts of speech used in English. It covered the different parts of speech, when they are used, and gave several examples of each.I was relieved that I remembered so much about this topic from my previous education, but was thankful for the refresher. Concepts like the gerund and the different types of adverbs pronouns. I feel I have cemented the basic rules that apply to these parts of speech, as well as becoming more aware of how irregular the English language can be. It is my hope that future lessons will delve deeper into how best to convey these concepts to a class of non-native speakers.

This section gave a very thurough recap of the parts of speech that would be taught from preschool to approximately grade 6 by the
american standard. Not only did it outline these parts of speech, but it also gave a comprehensive tutorial on the many variation of each part. For the many irregular or unusual words that it is difficult or impossible to categorize, or rather those that follow no rules, an extensive list was additionally provided for reference.

I remember learning these helpful bits of information in school, but I had forgotten certain terms. For example, it was nice to learn what a "gerund"" is. It was also interesting to learn the difference between transitive and intransitive verbs. I use these parts of speech in speaking and writing every day It is a very helpful unit in regards to parts of speech. It has clear and useful information about the different parts of speech. This unit has covered and clarified a number of grammar definitions for me. It has given me a better understanding/archive on a broad range of grammar definitions, sentence structures and how to break them down, which will evidently help assist in the teaching of foreign students.

vietnam, Joe,?); compound (greenhouse, schoolroom,?); abstract (beauty, sadness,?) and collective (family, shoal,?). We have countable nouns that can be counted while uncountable nouns can?t be counted.
We use adjectives to describe nouns. If you have some adjectives in one sentence it must follow this order: size ? age ? color ? material ? noun. We add ?er at the end of adjective to compare 2 people or things (it?s called comparatives), but add ?est to compare more than 2 people or things (it?s called superlatives).
There are two types of articles in English: definite (the) and indefinite (a and an).
Verb is a ?doing? word, it describe the action. Verbs can be transitive or intransitive. Transitive verb needs an object following directly, but intransitive can stand alone. Verbs have four principal forms: base form, past simple, pas participle, present participle. Auxiliary verbs are used for helping form a tense, they are: do, have and be.
Adverbs add meaning to the action denoted by a verb. There are five main types of adverbs: manner, place, time,
degree, frequency.
Gerund is the ? ing form of a verb used as a noun.

I find some of the grammar tricky to remember. The adjectives - comparative and superlative, transitive and intransitive verbs - infinitives are tricky also. It makes sense as you read each section but it's then putting it into practice, unpicking sentences and bringing it to live for students. I will be doing a lot of extra reading to ensure I understand it fully.

This unit was very helpful for me as I am a beginner to the world of grammar. I had to look over sections multiple times to figure out what the different parts of speech were. It has taught me that knowing a language, and knowing how a language
works are two very different things. I will definitely have to look this section over again

This has been hugely informative as it has been a long time since I have had my 1st language broken down into so many categories. It was interesting to note how speaking it has become 2nd nature but when it comes to explaining it I would be at a loss. Basic sentence structure and parts of speech are not things that I consider when talking and this unit has helped me identify the parts of speech and categorise the words in a way that can be explained easily.

I consider myself a person who has good command of the English language. Taking the time necessary to dissect all the parts of speech was a real 'back to basics' exercise. I understand that just because I am fluent in my native language, I need to understand the 'why' our language is structured the way it is so that I can help students 'connect the dots' and learn English correctly.

This unit covered the parts of speech. In this section I reviewed the building blocks of sentences. Some parts are simple to understand, such as nouns and verbs. Others are more complex, like gerunds, and prepositions/conjunctions (which can be difficult to distinguish!)This unit was very helpful as it succinctly summed up the parts of speech and pointed out things that may be particularly difficult for EFL learners.
