One of the most important things for someone to know when first starting their job as a teacher is to know what age group they should be teaching. I feel for me what I've taken away from this unit was I would like to teach beginners. I feel like with beginners everything will be new to them so I would feel more successful as a teacher. I also find that to be a good teacher they need to take certain aspects out of all the teaching roles. For example it would not be good to manage a class 90 percent of the time but there is a time and place where the teacher does need to explain and lecture the students.

In this unit, they talk about what is a good teacher and what is the different between ages when learning. What I've learn is that a good teacher is to care more about students learning then teaching, have subject knowledge, and should know the students weaknesses. Students ages matter in teaching because they have different motivation, experiences, and behavior. This unit very nicely describes what to look for in one's own motivation in teaching English and thus is very helpful in focusing on what my motivation is. I found this unit very helpful and interesting. I learnt that a teacher?s role in the classroom need not be fixed to one particular style but that it should, ideally, change? depending on what is going on. Being aware of the many roles a teacher is supposed to play helps to keep a class well-balanced and dynamic. I also learnt the difference between young learners, and adults, and how to motivate each age group effectively. Overall, this unit helped me see that a successful teacher should tune in to the students in order to adapt the lessons appropriately, draw from the students experience, and keep them motivated.

To be honest, for me this lesson was largely self-evident because I have several years teaching experience with students ranging from preschool to senior citizens. I did however learn about the various ability levels of students and how they are defined, Before this lesson I was never sure exactly what was meant by elementary or intermediate, for example. The breakdown of the specific roles of a teacher was interesting, I had never before separated teaching into it's component parts but understood each individual part due to having observed many different teachers both as a student and as an assistant teacher. I had never before encountered the Common european Framework ratings, perhaps because I am american and have only taught English in japan.

Effective teachers must know their own role preferences, strengths and weaknesses and be flexible in shifting gears to meet students' levels, situational (ie role demand) and motivational needs. A balance between process and task must be maintained, always shifting in the group learning dynamics. I have taught german as a second language to college students and leadership skills to adults in the workplace -- and done it since 1974. It was good to be reminded, in new phraseology to me, of the need to know myself and flex to learner's needs. The materials challenged me to synthesize the lessons of my own experience and check them out against this presentation - -to take an inventory of my own thinking and be reminded where I must be careful. In my case, I tend to want to facilitate more than manage, to Foster processes rather than organize and direct. I've been reminded of that tendency and of all that I have done since 1974 to achieve good learner-oriented flexibility in helping others develop. Thanks for the reminder.

This unit comprised the different roles and qualities of both teachers and learners, the ideal characteristics of each, and likely factors that influence the efficacy of both teaching and learning. I feel like teaching and learning is more of a fluid, interactive, and natural activity than this unit's technicalities made it out to be, but I also feel that it's good to have this structural backbone of principles, roles, and ideals so that there's a way to gauge my effectiveness as a teacher, or the nature of my students. Also, the variety of roles opens up new ways to see the art of teaching in action, or the diverse ways of going about it. In all, I think this unit helped open up to me the complexities of teaching, the sensitivities behind learning, and the layered nuances that even the simplest lesson will draw upon.

Unit 1 is based on the relationship between teachers and students. It takes into consideration the different types of roles a teacher must play in the classroom based on the different activities applied(Manager, Organizer, Assessor, Tutor, Monitor, Participant, Facilitator, Model and Prompter). The unit describes the qualities required to be a good teacher and the correct way a teacher must act with regards to his/her students while being encouraging, motivating and helpful. It then describes the different types of learners, based on age and motivation, and the different factors that might influence the ability of a student to learn such as willingness or not to participate in class, nervousness and anxiety (more common in adult learners), past learning experience, open mindedness to different teaching methods etc. Finally, unit one describes the different stages in learning English as a foreign language, as described by the Common european Framework, and the varied reasons why people want to learn English. Personally I can say that I have learnt many things in this first lesson. Starting with the qualities required to become a good teacher (qualities which I believe to possess completely) as well as the different ways to approach the various activities that can be held in a class. To be firm and a bit withdrawn when needed, while other times interactive and more involved in the classroom. But most importantly I learned that no student is the same and based on their different needs, age, characters, and past experience a teacher must be fully aware of his/her students and capable of encouraging and teaching each one correctly. This though must be done without giving to much attention to any single student, in that all students must be treated equally.

I've learned about teacher's role as: controller, organizer, accessor, prompter, participant, tutor, resource model and monitor. Each role is different and it's important to be able to switch between them. Learners can be divided into adults (18 years old or more) and young learners. And young learners into: post puberty (13+), pre puberty (8-12) and 'very young learners' (less than 8). Depending on age learners will be more or less motivated, have different life and learning experience or language awareness. They will be more or less nervous and shy and will represent different behaviors.

This unit was a fairly simple breakdown of the responsibilities of teachers and various styles of teaching, coupled with a brief description of the general learning styles and difficulties particular to specific demographics of language learners. The benefits and drawbacks of different teaching styles and methods and is discussed shortly. One of the most important issues discussed in the unit is the effect of age on learners in terms of their motivation, experience with learning and expectations of a learning experience. Also of great importance, though it wasn't dealt with in great detail, is the cultural environment that the learning takes place in - the distinction between certain asian and Latin american cultures is an apt one, but it will be necessary to familiarize yourself with the culture of learning in whatever area you end up teaching in.

Relationships between students and teachers are very important. Keeping the interaction between the teacher and students fun and motivating them to come back and keep learning. Caring and guiding them through there learning instead of giving them a direct answer, which they will not learn at all. I found this unit to be a good overview of teachers rolls and how to teach. It has made me think back to teachers I have had and what I liked about the way they taught and what I didn't like. I think students motivation is important in considering how to approach learning. The descriptions of the language levels was the most enlightening to me. It allowed me to think of what level of English understanding my foreign friends have.

This unit is a really good starting block to the course. It gives examples of what qualities, roles and the responsibilities a teacher and learners should have. Reading through this unit has asked questions of the way I teach and the way my students learn. Yes, I as a teacher have many of the qualities of a good teacher, but do I let my learners down with the way I teach? I see my learners as happy students who want to, and enjoy their classroom time. So the answer to my question is, yes. I see that I am a good teacher and my students do learn. Some more quickly than others. Overall the unit has given me the basis to re-evaluate some of my teaching methods, as well as re-evaluating the way my students learn.

I have learned from this unit that a good teacher is someone who is patient, loves teaching, has a rapport with students, can correct without offending, and can understand students' weaknesses and give individual help as required. I have learned that a good learner listens well, experiments with the language, asks questions, assesses their own learning methods, accepts correction and has a strong desire to learn. I have learned that there are different teaching methods when teaching adult learners who are often highly motivated as opposed to younger learners who may not be as motivated. Also I learned about the various language levels as per the Common european Framework.

The lesson gave a good overview of the characteristics of good teachers and learners. These were things I am familiar with, but it's good to think about them specifically. The different roles the teacher plays in the classroom was helpful and will be considered as I plan lessons. All the various roles should be used so that lessons are varied and presented in methods various learning styles need. The levels of proficiency will be used as guidelines in evaluating new students.

The aim of this first unit is to give an introduction about how should be the ideal teacher and the ideal learner in order to obtain the best results. Learning the roles of a teacher let me separate all the stages of a lessons and gave me the clue about how I do must be in each part of the course. Learning about the ideal learner showed me how to motivate the students and help them in case they have doubts or they have lack of motivation. Learning the language level gave me the answer to know about the part of the language i must focus. In conclusion, I must say this unit gave me a great first idea about the ideal relation between the teacher and the learner, their role in the class and the way to obtain the best results learning and teaching English.

This unit focuses on the teacher and students - their roles, motivations, and qualities. The first topic discussed is shared qualities of good teachers and students. The unit then looks at the different roles of a teacher, as well as the different language levels of a student. Lastly, the unit lists the differences between young adult and adult learners, as well as some of the different motivations for learning a second language. I found the most interesting part of the lesson to be the section on the roles of the teacher. With two years experience in the classroom, I was able to relate to the different roles, as well as acknowledge some of the problems created by over-using or under-using certain roles. It is helpful to match certain teaching activities with a specific role. I was also challenged by the section on the qualities of a good student. I'm taking a short break from teaching to study the local language, and I was able to quickly identify some of my weaknesses in language learning! I think this experience will help me to relate to and understand the different learning styles of my students.

This unit was all about the various types of teaching styles and learning styles. I knew about some of the teaching styles already, but I felt this reinforced the importance of blending all the styles together so that the lessons are well-rounded. It also made me think more about the styles I use the most and what styles I should perhaps use more of. For the students, the unit talks about the different levels of the learners and I feel that it's important for teachers to fully grasp what level their students are at and what their students strengths and weaknesses are. I also felt that I learned a lot from the section about the different factors that effect learning at different ages.

Finally, I learned about students levels of fluency and accuracy they have while they start to study a new language. The unit actually provides very basic, common sense information. It does, however, provide this information in a way that helps keep it organized; and therefore is a great reference. I quite enjoyed the roles of a teacher, and believe that I learned the most from this part of the unit. The teacher switches between his different roles according to the activity in hand: For example, taking charge of the class (Manager), work along with the students (participant)or take notes on how his/her students perceive the new activity (monitor). The Unit also dealt with how the levels of the students are divided according to their abilities, and what are the reasons people usually have for teaching English and how can a teacher tackle them. Even though at the beginning, I thought that the unit didn't really provide me with any new information, I changed my mind at the end. The unit simply put a Name to what I practiced without understanding its methods.

I've learned that it's important to be sensitive to cultural differences as well as the stages of learning English that my students may be in. I should also be mindful to focus on not only being a good teacher but to also build relationships with my students so that I can learn how to motivate them and for them to trust me as their leader., I have learned that there needs to be a balance in the classroom between the teacher leading classroom activities and stepping back and allowing the students to lead. I have also gained some ideas of how to make the learning environment motivating for students and also to reflect on the stage of their language skills and help them accordingly.

This unit gave a very good introduction to the course, defining the qualities of both a good teacher, and a good language learner. This unit covered the parts of speech. I learned about the various kinds of nouns, adjectives, verbs, pronouns, adverbs, etc. Most of this was a refresher for me, but I liked learning about certain rules. For example, with comparative adjectives containing more than two syllables do not add -er, because it is a mouthful to say. I also learned a lot of the irregular verbs, which is very necessary.

Going over the unit, I was amazed of all the various parts of speech that I used without realizing what they were, as well as all the sub-categories for those parts of speech I was more familiar with. For example, I knew what pronouns were, but did not realize how many categories they could be further divided in to. It was also refreshing to go over some of the exact rules that defined the various types of adverbs, as well as some of the different tenses for verbs. I look forward to some of the later units where these are looked over with a bit more depth.

Having taught grammar to high school and college students for several years, this unit was not too difficult for me. I already knew all the basic parts of speech, but I was happy to be reminded about the differences between transitive and intransitive verbs, and I also learned something new - that there were prepositions that show movement. That made a lot of sense for me and I wished that my textbooks had used that terminology when I was teaching grammar, since I think that would help students better understand usage of some prepositions. As I read the lesson, I wondered how I would explain the grammar of English with all of its exceptions to an English language learner, since English grammar is difficult for native speakers of English. I hope these lessons will teach me how to do this well. Lastly, I enjoyed re-learning some of the conventions of order of placement for adjectives. I had never really thought about that, but it is true that when we place adjectives in a particular order, they sound better. Cool!

In Unit 2 I have learned about parts of speech, which are the different words in each sentence according to its meaning or purpose. In this Unit I have reviewed some of the basic grammar of English, such as nouns, verbs transitive intransitive, gerunds, prepositions and etc. A quality of a good teacher, which I have learned in unit 1, is to have good subject knowledge. It's good to review a lot of grammar at once. When I studied this in school or taught it, it was one smaller unit at a time. I knew most of this. I had forgotten a few things such as transitive or intransitive verbs. While teaching I re-learned some grammar and remember that I know possessive pronouns because of this. Some people dislike grammar. I don't mind it and sometimes even like it. Since most students don't like it teachers need to make it interesting. Some adult students enjoy learning grammar in other languages. It can be more interesting than learning in your own language. Also it's good to compare grammar in your own language and the language you're learning. It seems to help you learn better. Many TESL teachers likely taught grammar classes not really remembering what they learned in school. They all need to re-learn or do a review of it.
