I particularly liked learning the differences in learning styles and motivation by age group as it gives you a better sense of how you would need to teach/engage students. This first lesson content confirms my thinking on students: there are no bad students, just bad teachers. If you are keen on your job and master your subject, if you feel happy when people enjoy learning and want to improve their skills you will have good students. Still, there are some other qualities you should possess to feel you're going to do a good job in class as fairness, kindness and vibrancy in teaching, but the most important is awareness that students are not all the same: depending on their different personality and age, every students has different expectations and experiences and he/she must be motivated in different ways. Therefore lessons should be planned on those basis too and a teacher should remember to balance his/her role that have to switch from a Type to another (manager, prompter, observer, etc) depending on goals prefixed in a specific situation.

Have learned that the teaching that i was doing in China was described clearly here and that i have been using many of the methods that are presented. I mostly taught adults using all 9 of the roles of a teacher. I have learned that when i was teaching for extra money and dealing with teenagers that i had to keep them motivated and willing to learn by having more activities and rewards to keep their attention. this lesson has opened my mind to look more at what the student needs to be able to learn better and how we can approach the lessons in different ways to keep class participation high.

I Haven't decided yet which age group I'd like to teach, probably more than one, but this lesson revealed the major differences. Although I've not taught as an ESL teacher, I have been a teacher for the past 6 years. I find all the information in this unit to be accurate and helpful. I like that it states the different qualities of a teacher and the different responsibilities they have in the classroom, such as prompter, assessor, manager, etc. I have found that a truly good teacher honestly does need to be a mix of these things. I also appreciate the fact that you included the explanation of the different language levels, since this is something relatively new for me. Though I have tutored English students, I have never taught English in a formal setting so it was very helpful learning the levels of A1-C2 and the descriptions of each level.

Since I took some language courses Before I was a little bit familiar with the level concept but the roles a teacher might play during a class was something new to me. Thinking back on my student years I realised that my teachers actually did play those roles and I will therefore try to do so as well.

This lesson was very informative as it told me about the many different approaches to teaching. It made me realize that one method is not set in stone, and different approaches for teaching may be better for different kinds of classes, depending on the kinds of students. It was also a nice review of some more general concepts, such as the basic characteristics that learners and teachers should both have in order to be successful at acquiring a language. It also broke down the levels of language proficiency for me, something I was not aware of Before reading this lesson.

I thought this lesson was a good summary about teachers and learners. It helped me to reflect on my own teaching style. In addition, it helped me to compare my teaching methods or qualities with those mentioned in this lesson. I thought it was also an eye opener for me when comparing adults and young learners. I thought the stages of learning were very helpful when thinking about the ages in comparison to motivation. I agree that young learners like Before 7 years old seem to be more open to learning new things and not stuck in a structured form of learning compared to older learners.

The title of this unit was Teachers and Learners. The unit talked about the characteristics of good teachers and what makes good learners. It talked about how one has to find the balance between these two so that the teacher can teach and the learner can learn. Good teachers know how to motivate and bring out the best in their students. They create organized lessons. They know when to assess and for what. When their students are struggling they know how to prompt so that it gives the student a chance to work on finding the right answer. They know when they should participate and when they need to observe their class so that they know how they are doing. The unit also talked about learners and what they bring to the classroom. It talked about the different levels of knowledge that individual learners will bring. Some of this because of the learners age and some of it because of the reasons that the learner may be attending school. It also talked about the six different levels that a learner may be at in their level of understanding of English. These levels included: beginners, elementary, low or pre intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate, and advanced. What I feel that I really learned from this unit was that it is important to be prepared. To have lessons that will motivate the student to learn to the best of their ability. To assess what is happening in the classroom so that the lessons will be challenging and yet be able to have time to help those who are struggling. It is important to monitor the progress of each student and give them the feedback that they need so that they will feel that they are being successful but also know where they need to keep working.", Unit 1 was a nice introduction to a foreign experience with a not so foreign language. In this unit we dealt with basic topics on teaching, such as the qualities of a good teacher/learner, and their roles; language levels, the difference between adult learners and younger ones. I believe I have learned through my relatively short life as a language teacher many of the points dealt with in this unit, but I was either unaware of some of them, or just had not reflected on them. One example would be the opposition between ?teacher-centered? and ?student-centered?, and the switching between these two ways of teaching. I believed that ?student-centered? was always a good thing (as this is the idea that we?ve been told at language institutes), but I realize that it all depends on the context, and switching between the two approaches would be ideal. In general, this unit served me as a reminder of many issues that take place in the classroom, such as the teacher roles, and the qualities of a good teacher.

I learned that there are nine different roles that a teacher can use. The Organizer and Facilitator are my favorites because I like when students get to interact with one another. I also learned the difference between young learners and adult learners. I knew most of the information about adult learners because I was one. One thing I like about young learners is their willingness to try the language. The final thing I learned was the different levels of language. I was not aware that there were 6 different levels.

I learnt that there are various approaches a teacher can adopt in a lesson: manager, organizer, assessor, tutor, prompter, participant, etc. Each of these approaches can be used a different times in a single lesson. It can depend on the students, class size or learning activity. I have noticed this approach in my own lessons learning italian.

This unit gave me much more detail in the various roles of a teacher and his/her relationship with the student. I have been teaching in Seoul, South Korea for 14 years, and deal mostly with Elementary and Beginner levels. I've discovered the reasons why my students are not very motivated. I tend to do too much class controlling and too much talking. I need to be a better prompter. Since I teach mandatory freshman classes, the students are often not motivated and the teacher must provide it all. I need to do less spoon-feeding and more motivating. I'm concerned because I am not really an entertaining Type of guy.

I learned that it is important for the teacher to incorporate each of these roles into their classroom in order for their students to be truly successful. The section of this unit which focused on the learner taught me some qualities of a good learner, and some factors that may influence a learner, as well as how these factors differ based on the age of the learner. In this section I also learned the different language levels, and what skill sets a learner would need to exhibit in order to be classified in a particular language level.

Unit 1(one) is all about teachers and learners. As someone who has already had time in a classroom it was interesting to see that my beliefs of a good teacher equals that of this course and many other people. Teaching isn't as easy as one would think, and neither is being a student, each part are equally important to the dynamic of the classroom. It was insightful to read about the different roles that a teacher plays, and the helpful hints so that you don't over do it while trying to find a harmonious balance in the class. Motivation and encouragement of the student is of utmost importance, as teachers we have their minds in our hands, and a discouraged student of any age will never learn, possibly scaring them for life.

This unit explained many of the different roles a teacher has in the classroom and how an effective teacher knows when to switch between roles. It also explained what makes a good learner and the effects age, motivation, and learning experience can have on a student?s progress. Adults are often more self-motivated, but can have difficulty trying to compare the new language to their native language and are more afraid to make mistakes. Younger learners are still learning their native language so it is often easier for them to grasp new concepts, but have much shorter attention spans than adults. Something I learned about in this unit was that there are very different level names for Europe, though they have essentially the same equivalent.

This unit has clarified for me something I already intuited from my previous teaching experience: that there is a time to take the driver's seat, and there is a time to take the back seat as a teacher. To be effective, it's often a good idea to vary the the roles and relative prominence of the teacher and students. This unit was also helpful in understanding students. I teach adults, and it is true that some of their bad habits are difficult to iron out. Hearing this fact gave me some perspective on my classes; it's not that I'm a bad teacher, it's just that adult learners come with habits. This more objective view will help me with my teaching in the future.

In this unit we learned qualities that make a good teacher, including being patient and entertaining, having a love of teaching and good subject knowledge, an ability to motivate students and connect with students, as well as having an ability to sensitively critique students. The roles of a teacher were also covered, from manager to assessor to model. The qualities that make a good learner were also covered, such as motivation and a willingness to listen and engage, and accept correction. The differences between young learners and adult learners were also discussed, as well as strengths and weaknesses of both Type of learners on a variety of qualities, such as motivation (adult learners are more likely to be self-motivated) and language awareness (young learners, especially the very young, will have an easier time picking up language from context alone). Lastly, language levels were broken-down from beginner to advanced. I feel I have learned much more about the roles a teacher can assume in the classroom. Although much of it was self-evident or intuitive, I had never really had the words or definitions to describe these different roles, and with that knowledge, I feel like I can better assess how I'm spending my time in the classroom and improve it. I also benefited from the detailed hierarchy of student language level, which I think I can use to better understand where my students are in the learning process, as well as assess myself better when learning new languages.

I found this unit to be helpful in a number of areas. I found the teaching section quite helpful in that it helped me to see that there are several important qualities, not only on a personality level but also in regards to the relationship with the student. I also found it to be useful to understand the different roles that a teacher may occupy at any one time. On the student section I can see how different age groups have different characteristics and this will be very useful depending on any given class. Furthermore, the underlying motivation or reasons for studying of any age group I can see as being of vital importance for a teacher to have knowledge of. Finally, I would say having an understanding of a student level will be helpfull in assessing their ability and progress.

I've really learned that there is a lot of factors that go into being a teacher! You have many roles and hats you try on. I have a new found respect for my teachers that I had for teachers growing. What really got my attention was the differences between adult and younger learners. I guess if i had to pick a group to teach it would preferably be adults due to the maturity factor haha. Unit 1 taught me about the different roles a teacher can play. It also taught me about asian and Latin american students. Asian students may be shy and lack creativity because they think the teachers are supposed to do all the talking in class. On the other hand, Latin American students are more energetic and talkative. I currently teach English students at my University, and this holds true. I have to call upon the Asian students for them to speak in class, while the Hispanic students are more receptive. I like how this Unit compared older and younger learners, and introduced the A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2 categories.

Unit one covered the different types of roles a teacher takes in the classroom and outside of the classroom, and the different types of learners one might encounter as well. A good teacher must create a balance between enjoying teaching and caring for their students. A good teacher must also take note of a student's weaknesses and strengths and adjust questions and content in class and one-on-one for them. A good teacher should always be willing to encourage and motivate their students, but should resist spoon-feeding or always taking control of the situation. A good teacher should encourage students and motivate them to learn. A good learner will, in turn, respond to the teacher with enthusiasm, motivation, and a willingness to learn and experiment with the language. A teacher in a foreign country should also be sure to keep in mind that there are many different cultural differences between themselves and the people in the country, and they need to be respectful and mindful of those cultural differences. To be honest, I knew a lot of what this unit was already talking about, but I only had a very broad knowledge of it. This unit has taught me a lot of specific things about roles and language proficiency levels. There were a few roles that I didn't realize were separate from others, for example, I always assumed the resource/facilitator role and the observer/monitor role were the same. All in all, I feel as though I've gained a good insight into what kind of roles I need to take in a classroom and which situation I should apply those roles to.

This unit provided a brief, basic introduction on some of the characteristics of good teachers and good learners. It also explains that there are different Types of learners both in their ability levels and ages. These differences will affect the type of material covered in class and how the teacher presents it. Different age level students will also come with different requirements in regards to classroom management. Finally the lesson stresses that different students will have different reasons for taking the course and a good teacher will work to understand these reasons to make it easier to motivate and encourage them. I particularly appreciated the section on the different roles of teachers. While I have been in the classroom for a number of years and made use of many of these different roles, it's instructive to see them later out and explained in this way.

What I have taken away from Unit 1 is that for a teacher to have good successful students will depend on the teachers ability to differentiate between their roles and the level and age of the students. A teacher of pre-schoolers students will most likely have to take on different roles than that of post puberty students. For example in pre-schoolers it will be very important for the teacher to have a strong sense of the Organizer role, as it is important that at this pre-schooler stage that the students are always aware of their task and easily transition from one task to the next. As for the teacher of the post puberty is will be important for the teacher to build authority and rapport, so the teacher will want to be more of a controller to gain authority and a participant, act as an equal, to gain rapport. Being a good teacher is being able to find the balance between the roles on should be portraying and the age and level of the students being taught. Teachers must be thinking on a daily basis on how they can most effectively influence their students learning experience and understanding of topics through building relationships between the roles they take on in relation to the age, cultural, and abilities of the students in front of them.

When I moved to Panama, I asked a number of people what I needed to do to qualify to teach English. The answer ways always the same, you just have to be a native speaker. After reading the first section of this course, I have learned that could not be farther from the truth. Awareness, cultural sensitivity, preparedness, and loving to teach, are just a few of the things needed to be developed Before undertaking the task of assisting individuals on the journey to learning a new language. I personally was traumatized an over zealous instructor and won't step foot in a language class. I won't make the same mistake. I am grateful for the information so I will know what to be aware of when I am teaching. When reading about what motivates people to learn a language, I really understood how learning the language could absolutely change a person whole life. It's a big responsibility.

I learned that the relationship and personality of the teacher are as important, if not more so than content knowledge. I also learned that it is very difficult to assess the intermediate students and that the 13 to 18 year age group is the most difficult to motivate. I thought it was interesting learn all the different roles that the teacher can do in a class room. It is a big job. It seems like they all kind of fit together as well. As you facilitate an activity you can model as you participate while prompting those that you are playing with and all along you assessing how the students are learning. This unit was a great refresher of the English language. It has been awhile since I've been in school and to add to that learning about speech and grammar is something you learn in the early years, so you generally forget that when using English you are using these grammatical terms. When studying this unit I realised that even though I'm a native English speaker, the English language is rather difficult to comprehend and that teaching English would require more then providing conversational skills. In a nutshell, this lesson taught me that English is confusing! As a native speaker, I rarely considered the task of learning the building blocks of English. But this unit opened my eyes to the minutiae of the language. Participles and gerunds are where I was most confused, but in the end I learned that gerunds are the -ing form of a word, such as fishing or skiing, and the participle is the simple form. I also learned that prepositions show the relationship between the noun and another word. I learned in this unit that the English language can be very complicated for someone who is not a native speaker. There are many rules and parts of speech that can become very confusing. Some of the rules have to be learned by repetition. Its important when teaching students grammar to not only give lots of examples, but ask students to give examples of their own. This will help them to apply what they are learning, it will help other students to learn from them, and it will help me as the teacher to assess their understanding, and correct misunderstandings. It is important with subjects that are complicated and not as interesting, like grammar, for the teacher to really understand the material in order to find different ways of teaching the same concept. As someone who has spent time learning a few different languages the different grammatical categories are not really new to me. However the lesson is good at pointing out some of the irregularities in the English grammar system that could make it difficult to teach. I think in order to master English the part of speech should be master thoroughly. It did this through a refreshing of basic grammar terminology, form, and function, covered within junior high and high school education. This unit also identified problem areas within the English language that cannot be easily learned or explained through memorization of grammar rules as they often defy such rules and thus require a student to remember each individual outlier.

Things that I learnt from this is the reasons why, for example, the rule for adding 'ing' to two syllable verbs. If the stress is on the second syllable and the last three letters are consonant, vowel, consonant you must double the fina consonant Before adding 'ing'. EG. occur = occurring. If the the two syllable verb has the stress on the first syllable and the last three letters also are consonant, vowel, consonant, then you just add 'ing' So happen = happening. I learned also what a gerund is and that if an adjective is more than two syllables that to express the comparative or the superlative you simply add the words 'more' or 'most' before the adjective while leaving the spelling of the adjective unchanged.

Unit 2 is about parts of speech. This unit discussed about nouns and its types. Also,this chapter tackled about adjectives, articles and their uses. I also learned about verbs, transitive and intransitive verbs and verbs in their past and past participle forms. I also had a review about auxillary verbs and adverbs and kinds adverbs as well as pronouns, prepositions, gerunds and conjunctions. This unit is a very good review of parts of speech for me, speacially with the verbs because sometimes i am confuse with their tenses or forms.

I found this unit to be most helpful in understanding English, grammar is not something that is taught once you are out of primary school and it was good to refresh my memory about the different parts of speech. It is important to know these because I think being able to understand these parts of speech and the rules of grammar is a huge part of learning a language.

The parts of speech unit was very informative in giving a good overview of the basic rules for grammar in English. It also provided many useful examples to help understand the various grammatical uses for basic parts of speech. I learned most from this unit how sometimes small grammatical errors that a typical native English speaker takes for granted could, as a teacher, be difficult to explain without a basic working knowledge of English grammar.
