In this lesson, I examined in detail the relationship between the teacher and the learner. While I have been a student for most of my life, I have never stopped to examine the various roles a single teacher plays in a classroom over the course of an academic year. I especially appreciated how this lesson applied specifically to teachers of English as a foreign language. As I will be teaching adults, I took great interest in the section that focused on learners and the different ways in which they learn. It will be important to tailor my course to an audience of spanish-speaking adults.

While the entire unit was useful, for me the half concerning learners was much more important. I think the emphasize it placed on the different qualities that impact a student's success was very useful. Unit 1 was a very simple and satisfactory introduction to throw me into this course. Many of it was stuff I had intrinsic knowledge of from years of teaching English without certification, but it was nice to see the views I've come to hold actually written down; very self-affirming. It also helped to bring me back down to the basics of what my job is, and what I should be thinking of when I'm in class. It's very basic knowledge, but being more overtly aware of it is a big help towards helping me be a better teacher, since most of it has been a general foggy miasma of ideas sloshing around in my brain of what a teacher should be and the Type of students I should be attempting my students to be like. Even this first unit is giving me new ideas for my class, so I'm already pleased that I finally took the plunge and signed up this course.

Context of the student's background and an understanding of each student's motivation for learning English are important factors in providing adequate instruction. By focusing on the learning goals of the students within a well defined framework of teaching English, teachers will be more successful in providing instruction. As a student of several different foreign languages, I could relate to the discussions of learning habits and proficiency levels (european standards) discussed in Unit 1, and I think that my own personal reflections on learning foreign languages have helped me better understand the material in Unit 1, and will also help me in teaching my future students.

In this unit we discussed what makes a good teacher and what roles they play. Also we discussed what makes a makes a good learner, and the differences between adult and young learners. In addition we discussed what are the different levels of language learning. A good teacher has to above all else care about their students learning, and build a relationship that encourages their students to be good learners. Good learners are motivated, have a desire to learn, are willing to ask questions, and able to take criticism. A good teacher can create good students through the proper use of their many roles, including Manager, Facilitator, Assessor, Organizer, Prompter, and Participant. Of those roles Manager may be the most important because if a class is not managed it can become chaotic and a very poor environment to learn in. There are several major differences between adult and young learners. Adult learners are often more motivated because they have chosen to be there, as well as often have more advanced skills and learning experiences. Young learners are often less motivated, as their family may be the ones to enroll them, but they are also more willing to take risks in learning a new language. Young learners are more likely to be at the lower language levels of beginner, elementary, and maybe intermediate. Adults may be more likely to be at the higher levels of upper intermediate to advanced. However this is not a rule.

The qualities of a good teacher is someone that is enthusiastic, sensitive, encouraging, fair, knowledgeable about the subject, and care about the success of the students. The most important of these would be ?sensitive.? When a student feels that they can connect with you and that you connect with them in a way that they feel comfortable, then you're able to build on the other qualities. You want them to feel they can trust you with their learning. This is also important for you because you can connect with them and be more encouraging, while also becoming aware of their weaknesses. I?d say it?s the foundation of the teaching experience. The 5 roles of a teacher that I feel are important are Manager, Assessor, Prompter, Participant, and Tutor. The qualities that make a good learner are listening, asking questions, an independent thinker, accepts error correction and a desire to learn. A "desire to learn"" and ""willing to listen"" would be the most important because these are the foundations of what would make a good learner. This unit was really interesting to be because I never realized the small divisions that can happen between different levels of learners. It was also interesting to see the different types of teaching strategies as well. I can personally related to many of them from my school career. The final section about motivating students is also very interesting because it gave a clear and concise outline to what motivates students and it makes me think about how to use that in the classroom to have the best results. This unit also stressed the importance of putting the student first without actually saying it. This unit reassured me the roles of a good teacher. I did not work most of my life as a teacher so I applied for this course to enrich my experience as an educator. I like the idea of not controlling the class by doing the talking solely. Learning process should be mutual and it is not only focused on the teacher demonstrating what does he or she knows but it would be rather sharing with his students. I was a student and experienced some educators who would keep talking about lesson without letting me or other of my colleagues to participate. I learned about how to differentiate between young learners and adults and how to categorize their levels. For example, I had so many students who are very good in grammar and reading but not good in speaking. Sometimes I had difficulty in advising students on which level they needed to go to because if they went to elementary they felt bored and they wanted to change. This unit gave me good hints of how to lead students to their proper classes. In summary, teaching is a talent but I need to shape it by learning the right educating methods and this will be with the help of this course.

Unit 1 is setup as in introductory unit that briefly explains the various roles a teacher may take on in the classroom. I found this unit to be helpful in explaining the levels of student learning and the various roles a teacher can take on to further the students grasp on English. Having a flexible approach in the classroom and taking on various roles seems to have the greatest impact in having the student stay motivated to learn. The overview on the level of a student's grasp on English will be critical in helping a teacher establish the progress of the class as a whole and the individual.

This lesson taught me about some of the roles and stages that teachers and learners progress through during EFL courses. It was a good reminder of the qualities I should try to have when I teach. Since I'm currently working as an EFL teacher, it was more like a checkup than a tutorial, but it was very useful in that way. I think I'm doing alright, overall, as a teacher, and I'm lucky enough to have students who fit the description of good learners.

The qualities possessed by those involved in the learning process that will create a productive work environment were introduced. I think I can't choose only one role of teacher. I should be accepted all roles and use it properly. I have learned the qualifications of a good teacher and requirements of a good student.

One thing that I learned is that there is a wide range of cultural differences that would describe the general behavior of the students depending on which part of the world you find yourself. Secondly, I see that there is a great deal of psychology that a teacher would employ to be effective.

In unit 1, I have learn different roles that the teacher takes in the classroom. The behavior from the student with the roles the teacher take is also important for knowing how to react to certain circumstances during the day. What makes a good and better teacher I would say. The care of the student learning over the care of the teaching itself. We can always change our lesson plan to make sure the learning is a priority in our class. In this unit, I have learned the importance of being a good teacher and reflected upon the many types of students I have encountered based on past experiences teaching ESL (English as Second Language). I have learned that it is important to always encourage your students to ask questions, allow them to speak and learn on their own, to always motivate them on their future plans, and to be a role model the students may aspire to be. I also have learned the many types of roles a teacher can be and had a better understanding upon each roles. My personal preferences are being a prompter, assessor, organizer, model, and facilitator. I believe being a combination of these five are what makes an excellent teacher. I also can agree on that an excellent teacher should always be kind and patient, have a good knowledge of the subject, and build interaction with the class. I also agree that being a good teacher leads to having good learners or students. A good student or learner has many great qualities, especially the motivation to always keep going as well as asking questions when unsure. So far, this first unit has enriched my knowledge on teaching English as a second language. I am grateful to have greatly benefitted from this knowledge as I will apply it practically to my ESL class.

This unit gave a guideline explaining the different important qualities found in a good teacher and a good learner. It also gave examples of the varied roles teachers must attain and use to become great teachers, such as observing, prompting, and being an active participant in class at times. Next it discussed the different factors relating to language learners, including their age, language ability and experience, motivation, and their particular cultural influences. I found this unit informative when it came to defining the different, varied roles that teachers must incorporate in their lesson plans for every class. I will keep this in mind as I continue completing the following units. I also find that it's interesting to think of the balance a good teacher must have when it comes to correcting students, because it is key to keep your students engaged and motivated while also not discouraging them or deterring them from the language.

Meanwhile, the student benefits by having a role model who represents their position and culture and influences the student's perspective on language education in a positive way. I personally learned a lot from this unit. I am not a teacher but I have got some ideas from my personal experiences what my own expectations are from a good teacher. For me to see all that written, made me more focused on what and where I need to improve myself. It also helped me to see, what I can expect as a teacher from my future students/learners and with what I have to be careful with. Like cultural differences, personality issues, different level of English knowledge and motivation. I have a better view of the role of a teacher. I do not feel comfortable with standing in front of a big audience. I do it if I have to but I do not wish to be a controller all the time in the classroom. You see, when I was little and went to school, our teachers behaved like officers, so we were not encouraged to think on our own, to say our thoughts etc. When we made a mistake we were ashamed so I lost confidence in my teachers. Sometimes the lesson is teacher centered when the lesson is in the begining stages of input. In this unit,I have learnt that there is many different Types of teachers and learners and as I gain experience I will know which teacher role I need to play for example: promoter, organizer, or maybe even manager depending of which type of learner I have in my classroom. There will be many different types of learner in my classroom with different motivation to take my class, I have to look and listen to my students as to where they are in the lesson and if they are motivated and I as the teacher need to facilitate that motivation to learn and to set a good example.

I learned that there is a lot more to grammar than I know already. I know the basics, and having taught, I understand some of the more in depth principles of grammar, but it is hard to put it in use when trying to label or diagram a sentence with every single word labeled as a part of speech. That is hard to do! Now, I know why my students hated doing grammar. But, it is worthwhile, as it helps to give explanations of why certain words either work or don't work in a certain part of a sentence. This happened to me a lot, and I think knowing these things that were taught in this lesson fully would help to explain why these things could or could not be in a part of a sentence.

In this unit, I became familiar with the various parts of speech. I am glad that I had to take this part of the course, because often I have been confused about the different parts of speech. After taking this unit I feel comfortable with it and am confident that I can also teach it! Wow! It was quite challenging and i loved every single bit of it. I learnt that the indefinite article 'an' is placed when the noun denotes a consonant sound e.g a uniform. Awesome! This unit has outlined the parts of speech; nouns, adjectives, articles-definite and indefinite, verbs-transitive and intrasitive, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns, prepositions and conjuctions. This unit covered the different parts of speech. In this lesson I learned a lot about the different parts of speech and how to better explain or describe them to students learning English. For example, action verbs are things you can see being acted out, stative verbs are a state of being and therefore not able to be seen with the eyes. The difference between countable and uncountable nouns, definite and indefinite articles, transitive and intransitive verbs, etc. must be recognized by the student in order to correctly make sentences. The different types of pronouns and adverbs may be difficult for the student to grasp, but it also is very important in sentence building. I personally also appreciated the suggestions of the Adverb game, or other ways of encouraging the student to figure out how to use adverbs or adjectives. The English language has lots of different parts of speech that will be confusing to a new learner, especially the younger ones. However, once the teacher knows the parts of speech and how to use each one, they will be able to effectively pass the knowledge on to their students. Therefore, it is important to recognize each one and know how to use them correctly.

What I have learnt from the second unit is basically the elements that make a correct/valid sentence. From that point, the unit took me deeper to each and every element of a sentence. I learned everything from subject to verb to object and the different types that each of these elements has. Nouns, adjectives, articles, verbs, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns and prepositions/conjunctions are all covered in this unit. I think many people dislike the idea of learning basic English grammar but that is not the case for me. I have always known that grammar is one of my strongest points in my English language skill and I do have a huge interest in learning it.

Each topic provided a detailed structure and significantly challenged my own use of vocabulary. Throughout this unit much of the material goes into greater depth than I anticipated. For example, classifying verbs into transitive, intransitive, infinitives, regular verbs and auxiliary verbs enabled me to identify the wide variety of verbs. Having had a general knowledge of nouns, verbs, pronouns and adjectives prior to this course, I feel that I've taken the opportunity to further my understanding of the more specific parts of speech.

The unit summarizes the basic grammar used in sentence structure. Each one is called parts of speech. There were thorough explanations covered about nouns, verbs, pronouns, gerunds, infinitive, superlatives vs. comparative, adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, and prepositions. tives and comparatives are forms of adjectives that describe the degree of the description. Adverbs modify the verb and also adjectives. Finally After studying unit 2, I've learned the difference of transitive and intransitive verbs. Transitive verbs are always followed with objects while intransitive verbs can stand alone. I've also learned the particular order of adjectives written in one sentence.Common mistakes can be done if we are not very keen on when and how to use the adverb of the sentence.

This unit has been difficult in the sense that looking at the parts of speech seperately is very abstract. I have to say though that although the different parts of speech are clear to me as a very proficient speaker of English, it was important and interesting to look at them again and to reflect on how they could be explained to a student. I look forward to going into detail with several parts of speech such as verb tenses and relative pronouns.
