Over the course of the unit I realized how crucial the teacher student relationship can be. The teachers and learners must find a way to have consistent communication with one another in a slow approach friendly matter. Rushing through lessons and being critical on mistakes does not teach the student good manner. Bringing yourself down to the same level as the student encourages the learner to gain knowledge and learn their subject.

I have learned more about what makes a 'good' teacher and what makes a 'good' student. I have also learned why we as people want to learn more about the English language and what motivates us as adults. Younger learners need to be motivated and guided in different ways as they may not always be willing participants in their education. I found it interesting how a teacher takes on so many roles and how challenging it can be - it seems like an impossible
job but through experience and having a passion for teaching and your students, I can see how you can take on the seemingly daunting task of being all those things. What I took away from this module was that you have to be great as a teacher but your students need to be a 100% with you every step of the way (from Beginner to Advanced) for the process to be successful as well as meaningful. In this unit I have learnt the many different roles a teacher has to play and the importance of being adaptable in varying situations. I was very impressed with the
video explaining the age groups of learners and how that reflects in their emotions, pressure and willingness and freedom (or lack of) to learn. It made me reflect on how much I need to take into account when starting with a new student or group of adults. I found learning about the levels very useful. This unit covered the topic of teachers and learners. It talked about who good teachers and students are, the teachers roles, students' fluency level, and motivation.
When discussing the teachers' aspect of the topic, a definition of what a good teacher should be like was formed involving some bullet points that included personality traits and the relationship between the teacher and students. It emphasized that teachers should care more about the learning of the students than the actual teaching. That is to say that teaching itself, and the knowledge utilized to perform that task, is a tool used to help the students learn.
The main aspect of teacher section of the topic that I learned involved the roles of a teacher. In particular, I found the role of the observer to be insightful. My teaching style, as of right now, reflects that of the manager role more so than it should. If I take on the role of the observer for certain activities and games, it will allow the students to learn on their own in a student-centered way.
I found one aspect of the student section in this unit very helpful. In the past, when I discussed a student's language level, I just guessed from experience where it might be. Reading the definitions in this unit gave me a standardized defintion to use. This way, I can more accurately determine my students' fluency level.

There are several teacher roles, and those are the Manager/Controller (taking charge of the class), the Organizer (inventing activities and organizing/tasking students with said activities), the Assessor (keeping track of students' progress, while providing constructive feedback, correction and grading), the Prompter (hinting or guiding students during dialogue), the Participant (when the teacher takes on a student's role in activities and so on), the Tutor (when the teacher needs to take a more personal role and provide more individual attention to a single student), the Resource or Facilitator (devising activities which require minimal to no teacher intervention, enabling students to learn on their own, but remain available for assistance), the Model (provide students with examples of correct English), the Observer/Monitor (overseeing both individual and group progress and behavior during class).
Regarding the teacher qualities and roles, I believe that the quality of inventiveness, or creativity is very important, as well as the roles of the Organizer, the Participant, and the Manager: the first one regulates all other roles including the teacher's role, the second one provides for a better connection between teacher and students ensuring a more effective transmission of knowledge, and the third one balances this connection by bringing authority and lead back to the teacher. Being inventive can help fuel and adapt all the teacher roles, improving them for the task or lesson plan at hand, as well as to the age, behavior and language level of the students.
Learners, too, can be categorized. The chief two parameters by which this can be done are their age, and their level of English language proficiency.
There are two main learner age categories:
young learners (under the age of 18) and adults (age 18 and older). The young learners can be subsequently categorized into three sub-groups: 1) Young learners (ages 2-7), Pre-puberty learners (ages 8-12 or 13), and 3) Puberty learners (ages 13/14-18). Depending on their age, young learners can exhibit wide differences in motivation, experience and behavior. For example, the youngest ones will be motivated by curiosity, willingness to provide correct answers and exhibit desire to play; the pre-pubescent learners would be motivated by friends' backing and self-affirmation, therefore being less concerned about making mistakes; and last but not least, the puberty level learners are motivated by peer pressure and are consequently more reluctant to engage in the class.
There are also many other factors which influence learner behavior, such as their cultural background, life experiences, first language, motivation and so on.
Lastly, their level of language is also important regarding the structure of the lesson plan and activities therein. There are two English language proficiency breakdowns. The common one includes the following categories: Basic, Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate and Advanced level of English language proficiency. The second one, or the Common
european Framework levels are as follows: Basic Users - Breakthrough (A1) and Waystage (A2) level, Independent Users - Threshold (B1) and Vantage (B2) level; and lastly, Proficient Users - Effective Operational Proficiency (C1) and the Mastery level (C2).

Unit One is a synopsis covering the classroom element of teachers and learners. It addresses what it means to not only be a good teacher but a good learner as well. This allowed me to consider not only my viewpoint as the teacher but what it means to be a student in a similar situation (language learning) and to empathize with their experience.
Specifying the different teacher roles within the class was also extremely helpful because while I currently use many of those methods in my classroom I have not been able to distinguish that I was doing anything but ?teaching?. Therefore, bringing attention to the different roles is important because if they are not considered then the students may be missing an important aspect of learning because I am lacking. As a result this has caused me to reevaluate and consider where there may be gaps in my teaching.

This unit was theory based and therefore not that interesting for me . I appreciate the
video which was more about practical examples than simple listing of characteristics. Also test I find helpful as it made me think about topic rather than learn by heart what was said. The lesson gave a good overview of the roles of teachers and the different aspects of language learners. This unit illustrated what characteristics make up a good teacher and learner. These qualities help shape the classroom and the experiences for everyone involved. The teacher must play different roles depending on the activity and language level of the students, while the students should come ready and motivated to learn daily. The age of the students is a large determinant of their motivation, but if the teacher is able to organize their lessons well and assess the class without taking over for large periods of time, then the students no matter the age or language level should benefit.

As one of those rare individuals who actually enjoys grammar, this unit acted as a general review for me. I like that plentiful examples were present throughout the printed portion of the unit, but do feel explanations were, at times, better covered in the
video supplement. The printed materials should be proofread, as there were multiple errors. Yet, despite finding myself in a position to correct errors from time to time, the unit was helpful in terms of reviewing a wide array of general grammar rules and examples. The topics included nouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs, gerunds, articles, conjunctions, prepositions, and verbs. The section on verbs, in all their various and complicated forms, was probably most helpful. When one does not use certain terms, like past participle and intransitive, for years, a reminder of what they mean and how such verbs are used can be quite helpful.

Teaching is not all personality and ability, he/she must also have a good grasp on the course material. With teaching English this means understanding grammar. This unit provided a simple review of fundamental grammar terms and concepts. Some of learning grammar comes from simply hearing the language in use, however many concepts must also be deliberately taught. Unit 2 is an overview of the basic parts of speech. This was a great refresher for me since I have not had instruction on parts of speech since high school. I will be able to better explain English sentence structure to my wife and many of my friends who are not native English speakers. This lesson has taught me parts of the speech. It has made my understanding of a speech very easy now. With the help of this the chance of making errors decreases, in our daily speeches. Every part of a speech is explained very clearly.

I am actually very impressed on how much information the course provides, everything was clear and easy to understand, there were a couple of things I didn?t know about adverbs and nouns however, the information an activities were perfect and they helped me a lot to do the activities and the test. This section gave a general overview of the different parts of speech, and it explain the meaning for each as well as their rules. After covering this section, i feel that i have strengthen weak area of grammar even more. As the section stated many time native speakers communicate just by instincts without understanding the grammar mechanisms of our language.

This unit taught me many things about parts of speech that I have not reflected over
Before. It also gave me some practical ideas about how to teach various parts. Something that I had not thought about before was for example the use of articles and that the rule is to use a or an depending on the how the first part of the word sounds. Although I think I now have a pretty good basic knowledge of the parts of speach I feel that this is a unit that I will need to come back to before being able to teach.

I found this unit a little challenging as i had to read over the notes a few times as i
Haven't done this stuff since i was a young girl at school, so it all just comes natural to me. I felt comfortable grouping my words into nouns, adjectives, verbs, adverbs as I was familiar with these it was more the sub groups of superlative adjectives, personal +possessive nouns, intransitive and transitive verbs which i need time to get my head around. I feel this was a good refresher unit to show me what I need to study more on so i feel comfortable when teaching and explaining grammar to students.

This unit describes in sufficient detail, but without being too complex or overwhelming, the parts of speech and English grammar. A sentence isn't just a series of words arranged without thought, but contains definite parts and is constructed according to rules.

In this section, I (re) learned the parts of speech, their actions in a better form than I previously knew them. This is especially helpful for me, because when I learn a foreign language, I have difficulty distinguishing what the words are. However, knowing their actions in English will allow me to better understand their actions in a foreign language. Likewise, knowing the definitions of these terms will be able to help me define these to my students.
