In Unit 1, I have learned a lot about the different roles of both a teacher as well as a learner. Teachers take on many roles in their classrooms as managers, facilitators, prompters, assessors and various other roles depending upon the situation that is occurring in the classroom. As teachers, we must be able to quickly change and adapt to each specific role once the opportunity to do so presents itself in the classroom setting. Learners must be motivated individuals as well that have or will develop some knowledge in their desired subject choice, (in this case, English Language), and aspire to further their education to fulfill future expectations such as living in an English speaking country or for their desired occupation. I feel that both teachers and learners have interchangeable roles in the classroom. While our job as teachers is to enrich and motivate our student learners, we are in turn learning from them how to adapt the teaching style that best fits their needs and expectations.

I found unit 1 very interesting as the different roles of teachers and learners were brought up. It's very true that during one class room session the teacher needs to be able to move between the different roles to keep the students motivated and interested. The traditional teacher centered method is not very suitable in today's learning environment and the teachers should try to focus more on participative methods keeping the students interested and involved.

A good teacher is able to build a rapport with their students, is kind and caring, loves teaching, can correct students without insulting them, and motivates their students. A good learner wants to learn, is willing to listen to what is being taught, is willing to experiment with the language, is willing to ask questions, and is open to correction. The different levels of learners are beginner, elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate, and advanced. These levels go from zero knowledge or very basic knowledge of the language, through ability to communicate on multiple topics but with mistakes in accuracy, up to the advanced level where focus is on subtler aspects of the language. When dealing with all levels of learners, the teacher has multiple roles in the classroom. These roles include observer, organizer, manager, tutor, model, assessor, and participant. The use of these roles depends on the level of learner, the activity at hand, and the needs of the students.

Or the point is explained with a simple picture of what is going on in different classrooms, which makes the learner feel or see himself/herself in that particular situation or condition.I really like how this unit keeps it nice and easy and at the same time helpful to learners.Not to miss the task sheet at the end of the unit, which helps the learner to self-test himself/herself and to Guide our mind to how the test will be like. I hope that what I have learned here will GUIDE me along in this course and in my teaching career. When I took the test I found it really valid and it took me few minutes to complete, but then I found this part, which I feel that it has a kind of a technical problem, because I wrote down more that 50 words, but it still dose not want to accept it and to take me to the result page. This unit was very nostalgic! This unit was an introduction to grammar. It started by explaining basic sentence structure. The unit went on to classify the parts speech individually. It has been years since I had to break down a sentence. The parts of speech are certainly taken for granted by native English speakers. I read through list of irregular verbs and thought of the students. That guy in the video was right about students just having to memorize those.

I think that as a native speaker we are not aware of how complicated English grammar is and how frustrating it is for native speakers to have to learn the many exceptions to every rule.

This was an interesting unit. A lot of the things in the study materials are going to be tough for non-native English speakers; as it is tough for a lot of native English speakers. Adding more examples for each of the subset is good idea, but adding a few more would be even better. I have learned that even though I have taught ESL for some time, there are rules where I thought there were only generalities. I have brushed up on basic parts of speech and learned better examples to use in the classroom. Some of the more subtle parts of speech I had forgotten. In this unit I learned the different parts of speech. I learned English when I was in 2nd grade, however, I do not remember learning all the parts of speech, it just naturally came to me. However, through this unit I was able to learn what each part of the sentence that use all the time were.

This unit I found to be challenging as I found it really easy to get confused at some points, for example transitive and intransitive verbs the section explains that transitive verbs need to be followed by an object, a bit further on however they show examples of transitive verbs not being followed by an object E.g. Alex cooks (there is no object) I figured out however that it is impossible to follow an intransitive verb with an object whereas with a transitive object the option is always there to follow with an object. The unit showed me the importance of understanding these concepts as well as how it may be very difficult to pass these concepts on to students although having finished the unit I feel I am now equipped to explain to students the varying rules whereas Before I wouldn't have known where to begin. Finally this section taught me that it is almost impossible to know all the grammatical rules however having a brief outline of them will allow you to start somewhere when explaining them, a teacher can always give a brief overview when asked a question and then later after researching and double checking can elaborate further, this is important to maintain the students confidence in your ability.

I learned a lot about the different types of speech that are in the English language. I learned the basics of the different parts of speech, past tense, present tense, and future tense forms. I also learned about the singular and plural forms. This was a real basic and organized unit, it was easy to understand and follow. This was an excellent review of the fundamentals of the English language.
