In this unit, the roles and characteristics of teachers and learners are presented. The teachers may have several roles in a class period including monitor, resource, tutor, participant, manager, organizer, etc, and these roles may have to change from moment to moment. The roles of the teacher depend on the current classroom situation or activity, as well as the age of the students. The learners can be adult learners or young learners, and young learners are divided into three categories: age 7 and under, age 8 to 13, and age 13 to 18. The adult learners tend to be more motivated and have a greater attention span because they more than likely chose to enroll in the class, where as the young learners more than likely did not have a choice. The youngest group of young learners like to play and have fun but have not completely mastered their native language. The middle group tends to be somewhat self-absorbed, but they have a little bit of learning experience, which may help. The oldest of the young learners are generally self-conscious and may be unwilling to participate in speaking. The adults, however, have the most learning experience, which could be positive or negative, and this could shape some of their views on how the class should be taught. They are often less open-minded than young learners, but their life experiences allow for discussion on many more topics. Their reasons for taking an English course could be for travel, work, communication with friends, or simply for the interest in other languages. Lastly, there are six levels of evaluation in language-learning, which can vary depending on the system used. In this unit, they are beginner, elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper-intermediate, and advanced.

I was most struck by the number of teaching styles explored in this unit. While I was aware of several learning styles, I had never considered the same was true of teaching. It seems that, to a certain degree, a mix of styles would be beneficial to any lesson. One would need to be manager or assessor, even while striving to be an observant, model participant. When it comes to learners, I disagree with the unit's implication that a learner can be 'good' or 'bad'. I believe anyone can learn, some students simply have more to overcome. After reading over this unit, I've found myself more knowledgeable on what is expected of a teacher. The different types of classroom teaching is more understandable and clear for when it comes to determining what kind of learning the students need. At present, I teach English to japanese student of all ages (Very young - 2 years old to Adults - Over 30 years). This unit gives me a clearer understanding of my roles and responsibilities in the classroom. It also explains the reasons for some of the behavioral problems I encounter in class. With this new knowledge, I am now better prepared to handle situations as they arise.

During this unit I have learned about the role of teachers and learners, the significance of motivation, and of the different levels of learning. I have also learned about how this online class works, and what to expect in future lessons. I am excited to become an English Teacher, and so understanding the various aspects of teaching, learning, and class management is very important. Throughout my life I have had many excellent teachers who function successfully in their role as managers, assessors, prompters, participants, tutors, facilitators, models, and observers. What I have found very interesting and useful in this unit is the fact that teaching is not approached as a merely technical activity but rather as a task that requires dedication and commitment on a personal level. The teacher is first and foremost an individual within the class: besides their technical skills (flawless knowledge of the language, correct teaching methods, etc...) they also need to be sensitive to learners specific characters, strengths and weaknesses. I believe the most important skills for a teacher are to love teaching and to sincerely care about having a good rapport with the students.

This unit was a very good introduction to the qualities of both a good teacher and a good learner. I found it interesting that a good teacher not only has several positive personality traits such as kindness and an outgoing nature, but also the leadership traits necessary to build a productive classroom. These including building a rapport with students and actively ensuring that each student is involved in the lesson. Many of the qualities of a good teacher were qualities that I have admired in teachers I have known. There are nine different roles and those roles can be used in a variety of ways depending on the teaching style of the teacher and on the Type of students being taught. This unit also talks about what makes a good learner and what factors play into that. There are also nine characteristics that include a variety of things like age, language awareness, culture, and language level. In this part of the unit you learn the basics as to what to expect from different learners, especially when it comes to age and experience. This section taught me a lot about what to expect when I walk into a classroom full of children in terms of how to act, what to expect, and the process of teaching them and the most effective ways to do so. This aspect was one of the most nerve racking parts and still is for me, but having an overview of what to expect and how to best walk into the situation has been very helpful and calming.

I learned that, as a teacher, enthusiasm for teaching is important and that making a lesson fun can help motivate the students. The section that explained some differences between older and younger learners was very helpful. It is interesting that adult learners tend to feel more nervous about making mistakes so the teacher should be sure to make them feel comfortable with error. It was also helpful to see the different stages of English learning. Now I know I will be able to evaluate the students' level of English and come up with lessons that cater to that particular stage.

Being away from the classroom for so many years, my past experience has been teaching at a conversation level. It was a combination of having adults students, from various walks of life, different professions and different experiences in different English speaking countries. Basically the only role required from me was of the RESOURCE/FACILITATOR. At that level, we would discuss current events for a certain amount of time, including myself in the discussion. I would then, allot the remaining of the time for one of the students to come to the front for make an oral presentation of a topic, in form of a text, given him/her in the previous class, Afterward, such topic would be discussed by the whole group, excluding myself.I'd be giving support by answering questions about grammar and vocabulary. Reading about the different roles of a teacher was new to me but, nonetheless, very elucidating.

In this unit, focused on teachers and learners, I have gained a clearer understanding of what makes an effective teacher and learner. There were several roles of a teacher that I had never fully pondered or discussed. I found the clear explanation of these roles helpful when thinking of my own classroom and how I can manage my students more effectively. I also resonated with the discussion of differences between young and adult learners. I am in the process of transitioning from a Middle and High school classroom to a University setting. I think it will be a positive transition, but with a new set of difficulties and required skills. The teacher should be able to recognize the Type of students they have and their understanding of a language, so they can better accommodate and educate them. For example, you wouldn?t ask one of your students who has a lower level of understanding to be the group leader every day. This unit also describes the best techniques to use to do so. For instance, if Professor Dawn?s student Dumpling student had a difficult time understanding the word ?indigestible,? he might ask her ?What are some of the things that humans can?t eat?? If she?s too shy to answer, he might say ?Well, we can?t eat wood. Do you eat Cherry wood?? (Prompting). A silly comment may liven up the class. This gives Dumpling an opportunity to speak. The first unit explains what makes a good teacher and learner. A good teacher has to cover many roles during the lesson and be able to switch between them all. Therefore, I personally would describe a good teacher with an additional adjective not mentioned beforehands: flexible. A flexible teacher will easily adapt themself to all kinds of learner and class size. Flexibility will also prepare the teachers to engage every challenge the class may set aside. A good learner in my opinion is not only the one that always receive good marks, but the one that is interested in learning and interacting with the teacher and the other classmates. This kind of students can also accidentally help the teacher in involving those students that are shy and inattentive. I have learned the roles and motivations of both teacher and student and how they directly affect ones ability to learn and teach a language. I have also recognized that good stewardship of behalf of the teacher will produce better students. The questions regarding the language level were unclear for questions 10 and 11 as there was no "low/pre-intermediate"" language level option. Overall though I enjoyed the unit." This unit was more challenging than the last. I struggled a bit with differentiating each Type of verb form. Prepositions can be confusing, however, I feel confident in my performance. For me, it is both entertaining and informative to evaluate what I do and do not remember about parts of speech and sentence structure from grade school. This unit deals with basic rules regarding use of parts of speech. It also deals with placement of words in correct part of sentence. The most useful part about this unit was that it pointed out small differences between possessive pronoun and adjective; verb and gerund which can be confusing otherwise. Unit 2 Its very interesting learning this unit. I leaned so many types of speech that were never thought to us like transitive, intransitive,infinitive,gerunds.I can happily say i have a basic idea about all kinds of parts of a speech. This will never be new to me again.

This unit helped me distinguish between the different types of grammar I use everyday. I do not remember ever having to learn the Name of each grammar rule, such as a past participle verb or a transitive verb. It always just came naturally so this unit definitely helped with putting a name to each grammar rule usage. I think this is helpful when teaching English as a foreign language because when explaining why certain words are used a certain way, there would be an explanation for it instead of just saying "it just feels right to say it like that."""

I enjoy reading the material but it is hard to visualize. I love watching the videos first and then going back into the material. The video explains everything much easier because reading it doesn't sink in as much for me. I think maybe the course should only do videos to watch and then take tests after. Its much more engaging than reading material that may be difficult to understand. I'm a native speaker of English and reading the material the first time when I took this course was really difficult but now that I have an extension with my course with the videos, its a lot easier to comprehend.

I enjoyed it as a brief reintroduction to the concepts of grammar. The unit mentioned that growing up in an English speaking country grammar isn't often taught as a standalone subject in grade school, and in my experience that was true--so it can be difficult to put into words the concepts of grammar that were expressed in this unit. If the unit can provide a workable vocabulary to express the most basic tenets of English grammar, then that will be adequate for most lessons abroad, I think.

This section was all about parts of speech! It went into detail about what makes up a sentence and what role each word in a sentence is. From nouns to adjectives and verbs, in addition to all even more specifics, I learned the essential labels that will help me better understand the English language. When writing and talking, proper English comes naturally, but this section helps me to remember the technical aspects to what I do naturally in my head!

This was a very nice overview of the many different parts of speech. I learned about transitive versus intransitive verbs and will hopefully be able to now better teach this concept to my sudents. I also received much helpful information on all the different types of pronouns and how to better explain them. It was always a difficult topic for me to teach and this simple approach is extremely valuable to me.

Sometimes we speak and use the language without knowing the speech parts and the grammar part of a sentence. This is a great way to practice and improve grammar skills for my students and myself. I realize that I needed to practice more in order to use the parts of speech correctly plus the ITTT material is easy to read and understand.

In this lesson you introduced me to Grammar for parts of speech. I learned about different types of nouns. I learned that there are proper nouns and nouns that can be counted. I learned about Pronouns. I learned about verbs and how there are verbs that have a past tense and a future tense. I learned about modifying verbs with adverbs. I learned about conjunctions and prepositions and how to use them in sentences correctly. I learned about parts of speech that we use everyday and how to use them to create different sentences.

Blood, sweat and tears....to begin with a cluster of ADJECTIVES!! It took me a long time to study this material and still have difficulty in understanding everything. I felt relieved the test was not as difficult as I expected (I hope!). It really helps me to see how important this lesson is to explain others why things are being said in a certain way. It gives more grip to teach.

Before reading this unit i had forgotten some of the rules of grammar, but now reading this unit it has helped me refresh on my grammar. It hasa given me the opportunity to understand how i should be able to explain and teach it to the students so that they will have a better understanding on how grammar is used.
