In this unit, I learned the qualities that make a teacher a good teacher and those that make a student a good student. A good teacher is kind and patient, knows the course content, is able to keep the class interested in the material, and enjoys the
work he or she is doing. A good student is motivated to learn and is interested in what is being learned. I also learned that adult learners and
young learners will not always learn in the same manner. There are differences in the level of motivation between the two groups of learners, in how nervous the people in each of those groups are, and the effect life experiences will have on certain students. I am not yet sure of which group or language level I would like to teach.

I personally think that there are two topics that will help me the most in this unit. The first is our role as teachers, and the second is what motivates our students. We usually think of teaching and giving information to our students, but sometimes we forget how to do it and what our role is in their process. It is clearer now, and it will be a lot easier too.

Unit 1 has given me a broader perspective on the many roles that a good teacher should exemplify and be aware of. Many believe that a teacher simples teaches; however, as the unit has shown, there is much more to a good teacher than that.
Secondly, Unit 1 has also identified the roles and traits that learners of a second language can show and demonstrate. These certain roles and traits of second language learners can cause for possible problems and concerns in the classroom; therefore, Unit 1 has shown many ways to identify, assess, and rectify these potential problem and concerns.

Some things I have learned from this course are:
Qualities of a good teacher: He/she should be able to motivate and encourage learners, should be able to correct them without offending or affecting motivation, and should be creative in interacting with the class.
Roles of a teacher are also important, to know which one is appropriate when. To be an organizer is extremely important to avoid chaos in the classroom. This chapter introduces us to the roles of both the teacher and the learner, to get us familiar with how each acts/functions in the classroom and what we can expect from ourselves, as teachers and from the different types of learners. It was extremely useful to first be given an overview of what an ?ideal? teacher is expected to be and/or provide-they should have patience, be kind, have a passion for teaching, be lively and entertaining, be able to inspire and motivate students, know their subject well, interact and connect with their students/classes, involve all students equally, correct students impartially and without judgement, know their student?s weaknesses and give particular help where needed. I learned that an excellent teacher has many many good qualities, and must be skilled with both people management and technical knowledge of both educating and their subject matter. It was also very interesting to have the many different roles of the teacher broken down specifically, roles including: manager, organizer, assessor, prompter, participant,tutor, resource/facilitator, model, observer/monitor. I learned that it?s very important to understand each role/function precisely, so that we know when to step into these roles and how to execute them skillfully. To that end, a teacher needs to switch between leading or guiding a class, and needs to know when and how to do this.
Conversely, a good learner is described as wanting to listen to the language, wanting to experiment with the language, being willing to ask questions, being able to think about their own learning process and methods, being able to have mistakes corrected and of course having a desire to learn. I learned that by recognizing these characteristics, a teacher can recognize to what
degree each student has them, and then a teacher should encourage and
Foster all of these above abilities.
There are 3 groups of
young learners-ages 0-7, 8-12, and 13-18. This breakdown helped me to understand the social, cognitive and language education levels of each young learner. Adults come into the classroom with more life and learning experience, motivation, anxiety, self-consciousness, language awareness and a longer attention span than
children who have little experience, less motivation, less self-consciousness, and knowledge of language but who have a lot of flexibility and ease at picking up a new language. Adults experience more interference from their first language, children little to none, since they?re often also learning their own native language at the same time as they?re learning English. Knowing both groups helps us to understand what?s easy for each group and what challenges they (and we, the teachers) face.
Another thing to keep in mind is that different cultures have different approaches to learning. In
asian cultures, for example, the teacher is expected to lead the class and do a lot of the talking. In Latin cultures, on the other hand, the students are freer to express themselves and their opinions. Good teachers should be aware of their students? cultures and customs and
work with those. I learned that culture has A LOT to do with how students will interact with the teacher and other students and HOW they will express themselves in English. Thus, the teacher must shape their teaching around these cultural patterns.
Having the 6 basic levels of language skill broken down precisely was very helpful for me to understand both what content the students understand and how independent they are with the level of proficiency that they possess. (the names in parentheses following each level basically correspond to classifications by the Common
european Framework): 1. beginner (Breakthrough, Basic User 1A), 2. elementary (Waystage, Basic User A2), 3. low-intermediate, (Threshold, Independent User, B1), 4. intermediate (Vantage, Independent User, B2), 5. upper-intermediate (Effective Operational Proficiency, C1), and 6. advanced (Mastery, Proficient User, C2). Since the actual meanings can differ depending on where a teacher
works and which textbook they?re using, flexibility is required. I understand that teaching each level has its advantages and disadvantages, and many teachers have their own favorite levels because of preferences and what methods can be used to teach those students.
It was also helpful to me to learn about the different motivations students have to learn English, such as: getting a better
job or improving their career, for tourism and travel, to get better grades at school, get better scores on exams, study or live in an English-speaking country, communicate with coworkers, friends and partners, or out of an interest in languages themselves. I understand that there are different textbooks/lesson plans/techniques and vocabulary geared towards these different purposes. I also learned the different aspects of what the teacher provides in a lesson ensuring that their lessons are engaging, enjoyable, full of variety and practical to build or maintain that motivation.
I could see why the relationship between teachers and learners is a very vital and complicated issue. And I also learned that earnest, interested, motivating and caring teachers are likely to have successful students who enjoy learning and will keep coming back to the classroom.

I learned the six levels of learning for the English language from beginner to advanced. A good teacher is passionate about teaching. They are kind, energetic, and fair. A good teacher listens to their students and has a good understanding of the subject they are teaching. A good learner is motivated, asks questions, experiments with new material, and accepts error correction. Teachers play various roles in the classroom based on the activity at hand. Sometimes they are the manager; controlling the classroom and doing all the speaking. Other times they are a prompter; encouraging students through questions and examples. Also covered was the various levels a learner might be at, from beginner to advanced. Also talked about was why students would want to learn English; to travel, an interest in language, or maybe for their profession. As a teacher, it is important we understand the level of our students as well as our students strengths and weaknesses. Teachers need to use a wide variety activities and play various roles in the classroom to be an effective teacher.

The knowledge that I have gained from this unit has allowed me to better understand the various roles that must be served by a teacher in order to enhance the learning experience of the student. By playing these different roles at the proper times, and always remaining patient and kind, the teacher is capable of creating a level of both comfort and motivation in the student that they will be able to gain a greater appreciation for the learning experience of the English language. The student is not going to be willing to learn, no matter what the subject, if you are constantly correcting their every mistake in with negativity. It is important to play the role of assessor at times, but in a way that gives feedback and correction without effecting the confidence of the student in their subject manner. I think that characteristics of a good listener can be developed in most
children if the environment in which they learn is positive and fun, while presenting the information in a way that is interesting and meaningful. Obviously different age groups are to be approached differently, for depending on where a student is at in their life can effect their ability to absorb material. There are clearly many things to be conscious of as a teacher for not only must you serve your various roles, but you must also remain aware of the individual student as a learner, listener, and growing mind. I look forward to further developing my skills as a future foreign language teacher.

applied to language proficiency. It was great having a breakdown of the different roles that a teacher plays while teaching and maintaining that balance to suit the students and their learning capabilities.

Good teachers - When I think back about my favourite teachers at school they were always very kind, patient and had a good rapport with the class. Furthermore they were good at identifying our weaknesses and helping to improve them, and use our strengths to further us. Overall it is clear that the importance should be in helping the students and creating a safe, helpful environment for conducive learning.
Similarly learners come for different goals. When I was previously
working with teenagers, there were times when their lack of motivation and having no desire to learn meant focusing on new ways to make the language exciting and encouraging them to find that spark. I think this course helped me think about other barriers to learning, like nervousness and confidence preventing you from speaking.

There are several different roles a teacher should play in the classroom and it is necessary to switch between these roles quickly and easily for effective lessons. It is important to understand your students ages and language levels to create lessons that will fit their skills, and attention spans as a whole and individually. As the first unit of the course it was really beneficial to get to know the different roles of the teacher in terms of organizing, observing and managing the different types of students and the complexity of the relationship between both, given the students age and cultural back ground, along with the different language levels. I carefully studied my first lesson. I enjoyed it very much, even though I realize that I already knew some of the material. But I must admit that I learned something new through this lesson. For example, about the fine differences in teacher's role. I also became aware of the different levels in learning English, different motivations for learning English. My main takeaway from this section is on the principle-level: all teaching should be centered around the student. I think I will use this principle as support for all modes of teaching: facilitating, prompting, organizing, managing, etc. I will also use it to remain aware of students' emotional readings of the class. I want to make a continuous effort to be aware of students' levels of confidence and interest in the material as well as their individual learning differences. Through experience and further learning in this course I hope to gain mechanisms with which to become more aware of the possible forms of said differences.

In this unit I learned what makes a good teacher and different types of learners. A good teacher should be fair, have knowledge of the subject, and the ability to motivate. A teacher has several roles (including: manager, organizer, prompter, tutor, participant, model, facilitator, monitor, and assessor) that they must incorporate into their lessons depending on how the students would best learn the subject matter at hand.
There are varying stages of learners separated by age and language levels.
young learners can be small
children, pre-puberty aged and teenagers. Each age group has different approaches to learning based on their motivation level, experiences, and behavior. For example, young children want to please the teacher, might not have any previous second language experience and have a short attention span. While a teenager might be in the class because they have to be, they might have some previous experience in the language at hand, and are self-conscious and less willing to take risks.
There are also varying language levels depending on the experience a learner has had. Beginners have had little to no experience; elementary have a basic knowledge of the language; pre-intermediate can discuss a range of topics, but will make basic mistakes; intermediate are able to discuss a larger range of topics, but still have fluency and accuracy mistakes; upper-intermediate are fairly fluent, but might make some issues with accuracy; advanced have great knowledge of the language and could be studying more subtle language items.

After reading this unit, I have more understanding in how to be a good teacher. A good teacher should care more about the learners. I now that one of my weaknesses is grammar, so I found Unit 2 to be both challenging and informative. Although nouns seem obvious, learning the main types was helpful, as well as the differences between countable and uncountable nouns. I had never really thought about, or learned, comparative adjectives versus superlative adjectives, so this section was harder for me but certainly not the hardest materials I have encountered. I already knew the difference between definite and indefinite articles, but all of the rules, like when you cannot use the, were not something I did not know. The section on verbs was similar to nouns: something I thought I understood well, but realized I had no idea about the different categories. In the past, I was probably guilty of confusing some adjectives and adverbs, but I think I have a much better idea of the difference between the two now! I found the different types of adverbs to be really helpful. Gerund?! I had absolutely no idea this was even a part of speech
Before reading Unit 2. Writing and teaching should be easier now that I have a better understanding of the parts of speech. Pronouns are one of the easier parts to identify, but again, Unit 2 made me think about pronouns in ways that I had not thought of before. Prepositions were easier to identify, but the list of different types of and examples of each should make it clear from here on out. Finally, conjunctions were a part of speech that I was aware of without fully understanding. Unit 2 made the two different functions of conjunctions clear, although I might still make a few mistakes. Hopefully there will be a lesson on punctuation soon so I can improve upon my two major weaknesses.

Unit two was about the different part that make up the English language. It covered the main parts of speech such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverb and pronouns and then went even deeper to talk about different parts of each of those and other parts of speech such as conjunctions, articles, gerunds and prepositions. This was a difficult unit for me but I learned some new things that I think will help me in teaching others learn to speak English more clearly. Some of these things I've notices in
children who already speak English as a second language. I knew that using 'her' at the beginning of a sentence wasn't correct but I didn't know the reason behind it. Now I understand. Also, I now understand when to use 'many' and when 'much' should be used (countable and uncountable nouns). I'm learning!!

This chapter is a good review of the parts of speech. As a native English speaker we don't really think of the parts of speech as we talk or listen, however, as a teacher it is important to know how to explain each part of speech which I think this lesson covered perfectly. For example, I knew that myself was a pronoun but I didn't know that it was a reflexive pronoun so this unit covered all the material that I would need to know in future to teach others the parts of speech.

This sections covered the fundamental parts of speech in the English language. It gave a through description and explanation for each of the basic categories. It also pointed out a few areas where many students find difficult to understand or learn. Through this unit, I learned that although there maybe many rules in the English language, there are also many exceptions.

This unit was a helpful introduction to the parts of speech. It clarified some basic issues in grammar that even a native speaker may not know, such as the difference between possessive adjectives and possessive pronouns or between transitive and intransitive verbs. It supplied easy to apply general guidelines for murky areas, such as the correct order of adjectives or when to change the y of a plural noun to ies.

Unit 2 explains the basic composition of sentences. Every word plays a role, whether it be modifying or describing another (such as adjectives and adverbs), indicating an action (verbs), or naming the person, place, thing or idea that is doing or receiving that action (subject/object). Within each group, there are numerous categories that help explain why a sentence changes through context or simply because there are exceptions to almost every rule.
At first, it is difficult to understand, but both the learner and the teacher must memorize these exceptions. The order in which adjectives and adverbs are placed when grouped together, as well as conjugating irregular verbs are among the most difficult to learn.

There was a lot in this unit and I thought the explanation of each part of speech was simple to understand. The example given were easy to see and I think helped a lot in seeing where each part of speech is in a sentence. There are so much more to nouns, verbs, adverbs, adjective, prepositions that I sometime as a Native speaker do not even realize or thought to seek why English is the way it is. The contents in this unit made me understand more and helped me to better explain it to someone if that occurs. I feel more confident that I understand what transitive verbs vs intransitive verbs, gerunds, personal pronouns vs possessive pronouns; they are used commonly but by being explained in this way I feel better that I will be able to use what I learned to explain it to someone who may not what it is.

Not much new here.Having taught for a number of years, this is basic material I have had to cover for many classes. I do think that the content is useful for those not holding a 4 year
degree and do not have a basic grasp on grammar concepts and terminology. Students who study with "grammar"" teacher will identify with these ideas and will respect a teacher who understands what they are talking about and vice versa. Kudos!"

In this unit, I learned about the parts of speech. I learned about the different types of nouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs, gerunds, prepositions, conjunctions, articles, and pronouns. I learned about the basic things in each category. Conjunctions help join words or groups of clauses in a sentence. Prepositions tell us the relationship between a noun or a pronoun. Pronouns are used in place of more precise nouns or phrases. Gerunds are the verbs that end in -ing. Verbs are the action words and also gives us the state of the noun. Adverbs add meaning or information to the action. Indefinite and definite articles: a, an, and the. Adjectives describe the noun. Nouns
Name people, animals, places, things, qualities, and states.

Without knowing grammar points a teacher cannot act in the class as a model. This area of English only strikes fear into the hearts of those who want to become better teachers and those who feel responsible for what comes out of their mouths. Being an educated teacher means being at least 70% of help to the learners, the rest can be taken from the books. I'm still studying English grammar and will continue because it has so many peculiarities that I might not know or use incorrectly.

The overview content of this Unit explains the parts of speech like nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs etc. and how they are used and where they are placed in sentences. Also how prepositions, conjunctions and articles can link words together in those sentences. I've learned grammar once again. There were many things I did not remember from my school days, and even though I knew how to use it, it cleared up some things for me on how to explain the why's.

This section was helpful because, although I learned all of this grammar terminology in grade school, as a post-grad it all seems more fuzzy. It was helpful to refresh with the specific names of the parts of speech and the rules to follow. While I do think that some of the material covered in this section was very self-explanatory or too obvious, it is important to reconsider the rules of grammar that we often do not think about but that are necessary when teaching ESL to others.

Unit 2 introduced an overview of the parts of speech of the English language. While specific uses of some parts of speech as it relates to grammar, such as tenses of verbs, will be covered in later units, this unit covered the general categories of parts of speech, including many examples, cautions, and hints for teaching them. It was personally a good chance to review my own knowledge. I was fortunate enough to attend a private school that thoroughly taught the foundations of English grammar, but I hardly ever consider the parts of speech regularly and was quite rusty specifically in categorizing subtypes of the parts of speech.

This section broke down the basic rules and exceptions to English grammar. It covered everything from how certain verbs are conjugated in different tenses, to the order in which adjectives should usually be placed. It also had a few teaching tips, which will come in handy. This unit contained grammar information on nouns, adjectives, articles, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, gerunds, and conjugations. For me, this unit was a great refresher on grammar. I particularly enjoyed the sections on gerunds and prepositions and these can be quite confusion sometimes. On this unit reinforces once again the structural parts of a simple and a complex sentence. This is vital for the lenguage structure of the student while learning english because you can provide to him the very first fundaments of english speaking.

These unit gave me a brief summary of parts of speech. While

I really enjoyed the jorney through this unit reinforcing the grama that we think we are sure knowing very much but there is allways a surprise.
I have learnt more verbs, prepositions, reinforce the transitive and intransitive verbs,rules of adverbs and overall.

This Unit gives a basic reminder of the names of component and laws of English grammar, by listing and categorizing the different kind of verbs, articles, pronouns, adjectives.. I learn in this Unit that there is two kind of verbs in English, the regular verbs which past simple and past participle always finish with -ed, and the irregular verbs, which last have many different written forms and sounds. It also gives me a review of the most commonly used irregular verbs.

Grammer is rather complex due to all the exceptions to the rule. Grammar is also imperative to understand if you were to teach your native language to foreigners as even though you can speak fluently, you must have knowledge of the structure or parts of speech in order to communicate and teach them effectively. I found that knowing parts of speech as well as rules thereof really makes it easier to construct formal sentences. I think sentence construction is really important when teaching
