Teachers and Learners is the first unit of the course and it focuses on teachers and what makes a good teacher and which roles teachers have in the language learning process i.e. manager, organiser, tutor, prompter, participant etc. Further, the unit covers learners and what makes good learners, tells us about the factors affecting the learning outcome: motivation, age, culture, experience, behaviour of the learner etc. The unit gives a categorization of learners by language level, 6 levels, resemblence to Common european Language framework etc. In the end, the unit sheds some light on general motives, common reasons for attending English classes. I believe that I learned a lot, I recevied a well structured intro lesson to the world of teaching and I am happy to move on to the next unit.

In this unit, I learn many useful points that can help my teaching. For example I find what the characteristics of a good teacher are: S/he should 1. be kind and patient 2. really love teaching 3. be lively and entertaining 4. be able to motivate students 5. have a good subject knowledge 6. have good rapport with the class 7. be able to involve all students equally throughout the lesson 8. be able to correct students without offending and affecting their motivation 9. know their weaknesses and try to give help and individual attention if necessary. Different roles of a teacher are manager and controller, organizer, assessor, prompter, participant, tutor, resource and facilitator, model, and observer or monitor. Each of these roles should be applied in an specific activity in the class. I can learn how to deal with different language learners including adults or young learners. I find that many factors affect language teaching such as the learners` age, culture and first language, life experience, learning experience, motivation, nervousness, behavior problems, and language awareness. There are 6 language levels, beginner, elementary, low/per-intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate, advanced. The complexity and the Speed of teacher`s speaking depend on the students` level. And good learners are those who have willingness to listen to the language, desire to learn, desire to experiment with the language, willingness to ask questions, ability to think about their own learning process and methods, and acceptance of error correction. Learners may have various motivation to learn English such as improving their school grades, communicating, not being interested in other languages, studying or living in an English speaking country, traveling, and becoming successful in their future job. All of the above information can contribute to become the best EFL teacher in the world.

I didn?t realize that there were 9 distinct roles a teacher plays in the classroom. The breakdown of roles and their definitions was helpful, especially since I have spent more time as a learner than as a teacher. The designated names of the levels of learners was also new information for me, especially the Council of Europe?s names.

In conclusion, how important is the relationship between the teachers with the learners. This unit was helpful because it lays the foundation for tefl. I learned the different levels that students can be at in regards to their English ability level. I also learned that there are different roles that the teacher can have in the classroom. Each role depends on the activity and what I want students to learn. From this lesson, I learned what qualities go into making a good teacher as well as what traits constitute a superior learner. On the technical side, I learned the classifications of students. I found the distinctions made between cultures with respect to classroom conduct very interesting. I learned good characteristics of both teachers and good learners. I became aware of the situations where students will feel nervous and lack of concentration. I learned how to manage certain situations. I thought teaching was supposed to be "teaching" It was nice to read about what makes a good teacher and what makes a good student. I do believe that you cannot have on without the other. I know, as a student, I always did well with a motivational teacher who had control over his/her class.

I learned so many things. I found the different roles a teacher plays interesting because I finally understand the importance of each role. I learned that the role a teacher plays depends on the activity at hand and what I want the student to get from that particular activity. I will definitely try improving my role as an organizer by giving clear instructions on an activity and then playing the role of an observer to allow the student to learn more for themselves . I feel I have learned a lot about my role as a teacher and how the student will respond to the different roles. It is important to strike a balance between the different roles to keep the class flowing smoothly and keep the students engaged. I never realized how much the overuse of one can cause the students to become bored or disinterested. I also was intrigued by the different language levels. I want to work with elementary school children and it is important to remember that they do know a lot of disconnected things, and it is a matter of piecing the puzzle together. I am very determined to become excellent at constructive criticism. I want my students to be confident in their abilities and not fear answering questions because of being corrected.

I have learnt that being the leader in your classroom is necessary but not all the time. I believe that it is good for the students to also learn from each other, seeing how his/her best friend understands it might help them understand it to. Doing group work is a great way to also see where some students are in terms of the subject and where some students aren't and therefore which students might need some more attention. Motivating and reassuring them can only help and support them to reach their end goal. I learnt that each age group comes with its own challenges and keeping students focused and excited to reach their goal could sometimes be a challenge for a teacher, but keeping the lessons and experience exciting will make it more enjoyable for the class as a whole.

In this first unit I learned about the teacher student relationship and their different places in the classroom. Student levels and ways to approach each of these levels with different teaching techniques and excersises as well as the characteristics and roles a teacher should assume in different situations.The motivation a student has and where it comes from and how it changes according to their age group. An adult for example would usually be very motivated since the decision to study the language is usually their own where as a teenager is selfconcious and worries about loosing face wich sometimes leads to ignoring the class and brushing it off as not caring. It is our role as a teacher to asses our students background and motivation to employ the correct strategy where we prioritize the students learning over just having us teach the class.

The generalizations about patterns typically found in different ages and levels of students further clarified my own preference for teaching adult learners rather than the young, especially the very young. I also found the discussion of the various roles a good teacher will need to take on and drop again according to the circumstances to be most interesting, and seems a nice summary of those truly effective, best teachers one has had oneself over the years. Such balanced adaptability is clearly worth striving for, in my own education here.

This unit mainly covered the roles of teachers and learners. I learned that the qualities of a good teacher and the qualities of a good learner have to sort of coincide with each other, as a good teacher may have trouble with a bad learner, and the same vice versa. Both parties should be on an equal level of readiness and desire to teach/learn for the best results. Good teachers can still work with not so good learners, but it will be more challenging.

There are many qualities of a good teacher; the most important being that the teacher cares about his/her teaching, but cares more about the students. The teacher can and should play a variety of roles in the classroom - moderator, prompter, manager, organizer, participant, tutor, observer, model, assessor, facilitator, etc. These roles allow the teacher to be an example, listen and observe to assess where the students are at, provide time for the students to practice balanced with listening time. The variety is beneficial for many reasons, such as the students not getting bored, having time to both listen and talk, as well as hopefully reaching each student in their learning style. There are many reasons that students are learning English - to travel, because their parents are requiring them to, for a job, to move to another country, etc. Age plays a factor in motivation as well. young learners can be less motivated and disciplined, more open to new learning styles, absorb the language instead of comparing to their first language. Older learners can be more nervous to talk and make mistakes, more motivated, have a broader life experience to discuss, more orderly in class. There are six levels of language learners: beginner, elementary, low/pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate, and advanced. What I learned that I hadn't heard Before are the roles that the teacher can take. I have seen these played out, but had not given thought to what these roles are and their importance.

Well, as the beginning of the unit states "Grammar is an area of English that strikes fear into the hearts of both students and teachers"" And it did! But I learned that I Haven't forgotten as much as I thought and this unit was a great refresher of how a sentence is put together and the parts of speech. Review of basic grammar: verbs, adjectives, articles, nouns, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions and conjunctions. Most of the grammar was familiar to me, but I learnt about gerunds for the first time. Some of the specifics were also new to me, including countable and uncountable nouns.

In Unit 2 I have studied an overview of basic English grammar and each of the varying parts of speech. These include nouns (and their various forms), adjectives, articles, verbs, adverbs, gerunds, prepositions and conjunctions. I feel that this section has enhanced my ability to look at sentences and identify the Name of each part of speech. For example, I can now identify the difference between a possessive pronoun and a possessive adjective. I can also identify the different types of verbs, adverbs, adjectives and pronouns and understand their importance in speech.

Although I knew most of this already, it was a good review, and I did learn a few things I had forgotten. Mainly, I didn't remember the difference between a transitive and an intransitive verb, and now I know that an intransitive verb is not followed by an object, where a transitive verb is. I also forgot the difference between a definite, and an indefinite article, but labeling them as definite/indefinite makes sense because an indefinite article is a/an, which does nothing to further define the noun that follows, whereas a definite article serves to limit the following noun to a definite article, hence the Name definite article.

This 'parts of speech' unit has been immeasurably useful in understanding the foundations of grammar. As a native English speaker I have not learnt how to speak my own language using the terminology from this unit. Though I had basic awareness of terms like 'verb', 'adjective' and 'noun'; I did not fully understand the rules of how they were used within a sentence. This has helped me to breakdown how I might go about teaching the use of these different grammatical elements to a learner of English as a foreign language. I found 'gerunds' and 'prepositions' particularly interesting and am intrigued to learn more about them in future units.

In the Parts of Speech unit, it was a great review of what I have learned throughout my entire schooling. It was nice to go over everything, and even learn a different way or two on how to point out certain parts of speech. Though I am familiar with these concepts, it was helpful to brush up on some of the specifics that I use in my day to day conversations, though perhaps without complete knowledge as to why it is that I use them. I finally cleared up the meaning of "transitive"" and ""intransitive verbs This unit talks about parts of speech. In order to learn the second language it is essential to know its structure. Without which it is so hard to memorize all the grammar. When we look at the structure we see that the same rules apply to every word in particular part of speech.

This unit has given me a simple view on such topic as Parts of Speech allowing to look at it from a different angle. In this Unit we learn the parts of speech. As you read throughout the lesson it becomes clearer how complex the English language can be when broken down into parts. Many of the rules have exceptions, and simply must be memorized. Some nouns for example do not change from singular to plural, making it extremely difficult to learn the proper placement and sound of the word. While reading through this chapter it has become clear to me just how important the subtleties of what you are saying impact the flow of the speech or sentence.

This unit on parts of speech brought back frightening memories of my 7th grade English teacher. It helped reinforce my knowledge of adjectives, adverbs and the differences between the two. The unit also taught me the definition of a gerund, which I had completely forgotten about. Nouns and verbs have been quite easy to understand, but it was great to get a refresher course. The article, preposition and conjunction examples also helped.

This unit covered a lot of topics about the parts of speech. I feel that it was a good review of things I learned in elementary school. Because I know how to use these topics and parts of speech without thinking about them, it was nice to review the names and rules. While re-learning some of these things I also learned what it could be like for someone to learn these rules and categories for the first time. I was able to think about what helps me remember them and how I learned them as a child and that will help me a lot in the future when it comes time to teach others the parts of speech.

The content of this unit focused on grammar as well as ways to teach grammar. This unit reinforced the basic components of English grammar. It will help me to show students how to deconstruct/parse a sentence, and is a good reminder to me of the basic grammar which i need to teach my students Before moving on to more complex grammar assignments.
