Unit one explains the responsibilities and the effect that teachers and learners have one to another. in this unit I have learned that a good teacher loves and knows what she does, she is a friend, motivator, manager, organizer and on top of all other roles she is a model to her students. I have also learned that a good learner has a great interest in the language and is highly motivated to learn. Anyone can learn English, but there are different language levels from beginners to advanced depending on the knowledge that the students have of the language. Unit one also explains the importance of understanding the motivation, experience and behavior of students as it varies by age. Adult students tend to be more motivated than younger students because they learn as a choice and not as an obligation. My conclusion is that culture and behavior of both learners and teacher can also affect the class rooms in a positive and negative way.

This unit was an excellent introduction to the world of teaching English to speakers of foreign languages. First, it goes over the general characteristics needed by both teachers and students to have the most effective educational experience. Teachers need to be kind, patient, entertaining, knowledgeable, sincerely interested in teaching, able to motivate the students and, give them constructive corrections. Additionally the unit describes the many roles a teacher takes on during a lesson. Students need to be willing to learn and experiment with the language as well as examine their own learning methods and use corrections constructively. Next, the unit describes the different types of learners and how that may affect the teaching experience. Learners can be divided by age and by proficiency in the language. By age, learners are divided into adults and children, with children being subdivided into post puberty, pre-puberty, and very young learners. In general, the older the students the higher their attention spans although the less willing they will be to experiment in the language. By language proficiency, learners are divided into six levels which have different names in different systems. One system names the levels beginner, elementary, lower intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate, and advanced. From unit 1, I learned the difference between being a good teacher and student. The most impressive thing I've learn from this unit was the fact that to be a great teacher I must be a great learner. In this unit, I first learned how important the role of the teacher is and just how dynamic it is. Being a teacher is much more than just providing students with the knowledge they require. I also learned how dynamic learners are and how things like motivation, culture, age, etc can affect how learners learn and how this affects their role in the classroom, as well as the differences amongst adult learners and young learners. With that I also learned how this affects the teacher's role they take and how they have to take these issues into consideration for teaching. For example, when it comes to creating a lesson a teacher has to think about the age and you wouldn't want to do a basic lesson with adult learners. I learned about differences of typical roles of a teacher and qualities that makes a good learner and a teacher. I always thought that I had great qualities of a teacher but throughout Unit 1, I have learned that there still need to be some acquirements that I need to learn. It was interesting to study about a variety responsibilities to become a good teacher such as an organizer, assessor, prompter, observer..etc. Information about the different characteristics and personalities of Adult learners and young learners were quite interesting as well.

Today I learned the basic components of good teachers and learners, as well as what is required of each for success in the classroom. A good teacher need many qualities, including kindness and patience, a love of teaching, working knowledge of the language, rapport, ability to correct mistakes without negatively affecting learning, and knowledge of student skill levels. The teacher must fill many roles in the classroom. This including managing the classroom, organizing activities, facilitating activities to practice the language, participating in activities, observing students practicing the language, prompting students who have a language `block`, accessing students usage and helping the improve, and tutoring students who need additional help. It is important that teachers use the right method, else they can lose student respect or motivation, have trouble monitoring the class, or even embarrass them. The teachers job is made easier by students with some ideal qualities. This includes motivation to learn, students who ask questions, think about their learning process, listen to English, experiments with the new language, and accepts having their mistakes corrected. There are various challenges though depending on student background. This can be age (younger students more open and flexible), motivation (less for younger students), language experience (adults have ingrained practices), nervousness (adults worried about losing face), culture (affects classroom attention and organization), life experience, and behavior (adults have longer attention spans). Finally, students come from different language level backgrounds. This ranges from beginner (with 0 to basic knowledge) and Elementary (basic sentence structure), to Advanced (where the students focus on subtle grammar points). Low, Intermediate, and Upper Intermediate are in-between, with the ability to communicate on a variety of topics, but with errors in accuracy and fluency.

Unit 1 focuses on teachers and students in classrooms by identifying the sort of characteristics that make teachers good and students successful, and continues with highlighting teachers' and students' roles and responsibilities in a classroom. I was particularly amazed by the number of roles a teacher has in a classroom. I was aware of many of them Before but would never think of dividing them into so many. For example, until going through this unit I was convinced that managing/controlling and organizing fall under the same category; or that observing/monitoring and assessing students are part of the same role since they both go hand in hand with one another. ''What makes a good learner'' covers all the aspects that have already been known to me earlier (since I was a student not so long time ago my memory of how it feels to be a student is still fresh). I do believe that motivating and establishing a good relationship with the early teenage learners is indeed the hardest and most challenging. In this aspect, I hope to learn more about how to successfully overcome this challenge in the following lessons of this course. Another interesting aspect to consider are language levels. I am familiar with the 6 levels established by the Council of Europe but am of an opinion that there should be a more detailed breakdown of levels.

Overall I enjoyed learning about the different types of learners based on age and motivation level. In addition it was important to learn the different levels of language level for example A1-C2. I did not enjoy the part talking about what makes for a good or bad student/teacher because I think that a lot of those are self explanatory and not necessary to learn.

Unit 1 covers the roles of both teachers and students, including information on what makes a good teacher or learner, factors that may affect learning, the different levels of learners and also the possible motivation for learners to study English. I feel that I have gained knowledge in several areas, in particular with regard to the different roles of teachers. For example, while some of the roles such as 'Manager', 'Organiser' or 'Assessor' are more obvious, I have not always considered roles such as 'Participant' or 'Prompter' so much, although they are equally as important. Going forward, I am sure that considering the appropriate use of each of these roles will be key when planning and conducting lessons. Another interesting area in which I feel I have gained knowledge is the factors that may affect learning and the differences between adults and young learners. For example, I had not previously considered how an adults previous learning experience may have given them a fixed view on how teaching should be carried out. Once again, this and the other factors mentioned in the unit will clearly be crucial when considering how to approach a lesson. Overall, I think that this first unit has provided some interesting points for thought and although it covers some of the fairly obvious elements, it also highlights other, less well known aspects of teachers and learners.

I'm sure that this unit is more beneficial to people taking this course that don't have my level of EFL experience, however, I must say that I found the test far too easy and the unit too basic. I honestly think that a breakdown of cultural motivational trends from the more popular countries such as japan, Korea and China, along with thoughts and ideas on how to inspire students from those cultures would be beneficial to future tefl coarse takers. Most of this boiled down to common sense, but again, I've done this job for 5 years and have come to many of these conclusions on my own.

I am quite satisfied with this unit, because I learnt the important relationship between teachers and students. I am a chinese and English teacher at a private school. My students aging are from kindergarten to teenagers . In my Chinese class, I have a problem that I can't pay attention to all the students. Because I attend all the activities in the class. In addition, I am very exhausted about my teenager students. Their oral English is very fluent and they are so satisfied about their English ability that they don't want to learn anything. After this unit learning, I learnt that I shouldn't attend all the class activities, sometimes I need to be an observer to observe all the class and to know what's going on, then I can mentor all the students and know their learning situation. To my teenager students, I learnt I should give them more challenging target to finish, and let them notice they have a long road to go at English learning.

This unit has allowed me to understand the different role of a teacher and how he or she should behave towards students to get the best out of them. it also helps me to know that learners are characterised by different factors such as age, culture and language level and motivation.
