I enjoyed this unit, it gave me insight into many different ways that a teacher can structure a class and keep the students interested. It showed ways to keep the students respect and attention, and how to help the students from feeling defeated during their courses. It was a learning experience to see how students are ranked from A1 - beginner all the way to C2 - mastery level, as I was not aware of this form of ranking, it helps to keep a better understanding of where the student is currently at. I found the types of students i.e.
young learners or adults to very young learners helpful, because when I start teaching it will help to know what the possible barriers are with each student and how I might better get over these problems.

At my
job teaching English writing to elementary level and pre-intermediate level 4th graders, I see myself transitioning into several different teacher roles in just one class period. I start as the controller, making sure the students are prepared for class with the materials they need and with a calm and receptive attitude toward learning, an important step in students so young. During and after teaching the lesson, when I ask students questions, I often act a prompter, helping students remember that vocabulary word on the tip of their tongues, or nudging them to deduce a deeper answer. After a class brainstorming session, I move into the role of organizer, giving the students their assignments for the day. Because I teach a writing class, students often do a lot of individual
work, with me going around the classroom acting as a tutor, answering questions and encouraging the students to challenge themselves and their writing abilities. This is also one of my best opportunities to be an assessor, where I can evaluate the student?s comprehension and
application of the lesson, and give my feedback on the spot.

This unit has been constructive in its ability to relate what the teacher should be and how the student learns more effectively. I have learnt the difference between mature and young students and what motivates them. I have learnt that encouragement in all students is necessary and that you have to have a good knowledge of what you are teaching. This unit was a good reminder of the various roles that a good teacher must utilize for an effective class. Too often teachers like to dominantly rely on just one or two of the roles, but I believe all of them have a place in the classroom. Personally, I feel that I rely too much on the role of manager because I feel as though I have more control of the class from that position. This unit has helped me realize that if I do my
job as an organizer, facilitator, and monitor than I shouldn't have to worry about relinquishing more control to the students.
It has also helped me to recall the various reasons that students study English. Knowing why they are there will help teachers come up with ways to effectively incorporate the students and their motivations into the class. This will, in turn, make the lessons feel more applicable to the students. Finally, it reminded me of the importance of proper encouragement to help students overcome the nervousness they feel when attempting a second language.

children to adults and the different stages of learning from beginner to advanced. This lesson identified characteristics or difficulties of each age or stage of learning and briefly stated how the teacher should approach each group.
From this lesson, I learned what traits I need to be aware of in order to be a good teacher and to be the most helpful to my students. I became aware of some of the difficulties I may come across while teaching different age or skill level groups so I know how to adapt to those learning situations. I also learned the categorization of language learners.

I learned that there are a variety of roles that a teacher must fill, as opposed to just being a lecturer or facilitator, a teacher must become a combination of all sorts of different roles, such as manager and organizer (which seem obvious), but also participant and observer (which are more subtle parts of teaching) among others.
A teacher must also have a
working knowledge of his/her students' understanding of English. (S)He shouldn't be assigning Faulkner to students at the Elementary level, nor should (s)he be giving Upper-Intermediate or Advanced students a basic phonetics worksheet.

Overall this unit serves as an introduction to the world of teaching, going into the specifics of the different ways to teach, the necessary characteristics of teachers, and how to best assist the learners. As someone with zero teaching experience, I found the section on what makes a good teacher and the different roles they must play during class very helpful, as simply standing in front of the class and speaking is not, in fact, teaching effectively. The most important lesson I took out of this is that the teacher is in the classroom for the learners; while this would seem to be common sense, it bears reminding.

Learning about the challenges and strengths that comes with
young learners and Adult learners was very important and could prove to be very useful. I also enjoyed the break down of the age groups. It gave me an idea of what I need to focus on or what skills or activities I need to use to motivate my students.
Further knowing which role I am using gives me a better idea in how to manage a classroom and now I understand why they are important.

What I can extract from this unit as the point that stuck with me the most is how versatile is the role of a teacher in class and how demanding it is. Since you have to switch from one role to another depending on your class activity. Teaching will always involve at least 2 parties and that is the teacher and the student. As we know each individual is unique with their own abilities, skills, characteristics, personality. So therefore we will have some basic characteristics that are required in a good teacher and in a good learner. Between these two we always have to have to good rapport, creating an environment where both teacher and student can grow and learn from each other.
In this Unit what I found most useful was the awareness of the fact that you have to inhabit during years a strong character in order to be a good teacher. It doesn?t really relate with the fact that teachers have different personalities and therefore different ways of teaching, but with the ability to adapt your teaching and yourself to every student you may encounter in your life. We are all different, but what matters is what kind of seed you ?plant? and what kind of ?soil? you use in order to make it grow, most of the time it?s not only English that you will have to plant. It was good to see what is expected of me as a teacher along with how to keep the students engaged and motivated. I enjoyed seeing all the different aspects of a teacher how in depth it can be. I was always a student so it is good to see this new perspective on how to teach instead of soaking up materials. children in her classroom and make sure she is attending to each ones needs. By this i don't mean that the teacher needs to make individual lesson plans but over all her lesson plans should be able to reach all the children in her class. The lesson needs to be well balanced.

Something that I have learned from this unit is the fact that teachers must be adaptable. Language learning is on a spectrum, and so teachers must be willing to be flexible to each student's needs. This can only be achieved through empathy, and from the teacher putting the learners as the priority. The teacher must also be willing to accept the changes to lesson plans students may require as the lesson moves on.

The interactions of students and teachers with each other and with the language are important to the acquisition of a language. I have learnt that a good teacher focuses both ways; on teaching, ensuring that her lessons are lively, she has got a firm grip on the subject matter, she motivates and encourages the learners to learn, she gets everyone involved; and to the learner, she ensures that the learner is in the right frame of mind to learn and that the methodology takes into consideration each individual learner's style of learning. It felt like a good review of the basics of teaching, and allowed me to reconsider all the different roles I fulfill as a teacher in a foreign country. It also allowed me to look at my personal teaching situation and assess it from a more empirical standpoint. I never knew there were so many roles that a teacher must perform. I found this list to be very thorough and will be great for future reference.

The teacher who is kind will encourage questions and experimentation by offering constructive advice without offense; the lively teacher motivates students to listen and take a personal interest in their lessons. I think that this helped me understand the various teaching and learning styles. I think that I also learned some of the ways that teachers might not be effective to their classrooms, such as not understanding cultural boundaries or not approaching their class in a culturally sensitive way. I also learned about reasons ESL learners may not be active participants in class.

This unit was a basic grammer
Guide. I found it an excellent tool for refreshing my memory, regarding parts of grammer and speech. It also provided good examples and tables which could be very useful when teaching. I will be using parts of this unit in my future teaching classes. This chapter helps teachers and learners to know how to deal with correct tenses in English Language. I have known when and how to use correct tenses. The topic mainly talks about the parts of speech. Again, this topic has helped me to deal with subject verb agreement without mistakes. This unit was an I opener to the parts of speech.The usage of the articles as well as the positioning of adjectives in a sentence were things I learnt for the first time.The term zero article is something new to me also.This was a great unit.

Initial Parts of speech - The demonstration of the breakdown of each
work in a sentence was usual in being able to recognize the components of sentences and their structure. For definite article, adjectives nouns, verbs and prepositions.
Understanding of nouns in the forms or common, proper, compound, abstract and collective create the foundations for good sentence structure. The understanding of the following further enhances the construction of proper sentence structure
? Plurals- Word multiples
? Adjectives- describing words, bother in comparison and group comparison or reference
? Articles both the definite (the ) referring to specific or singular reference to something that is unique the earth. Indefinite ( a/an ) eg a ball or a tiger.
? Verbs ? the ?doing words?. These may be in many forms past present and future or in base form. They can be further categorized into: Transitive that are followed by and object and intransitive that simply demonstrate the action taking place.
? Adverbs- these add additional meaning and emphasi? Pronouns ? Words used instead of noun: persona pronouns such as him, she, we and us . Possessive pronouns such as
Mine, ours, theirs.

In this unit I broke apart sentences and categorized the words that comprised them. I learned about nouns, verbs, pronouns, conjunctions and how they all make up the parts of a sentence. I learned how to break sentsnces down so that I can teach them to people who want to learn English. I found this unit very difficult but saying that I found it very helpful for my future.

I've always had difficulties with sorting adjectives and adverbs. I am still not clear about where adverbs go in a sentence. I just read out my sentence and just use the form that sounds better. It's also still very difficult to remember all these forms such as personal pronouns, possesive pronouns, conjuctions, transative-intransative verbs etc. It's quite confusing to say which one is what. However, this unit is ery useful and I think I will use this sheets quite a lot.

I am familiar with the parts of speech in my own language only because I have studied other languages. It helps adult learners to be able to categorize speech. I believe that the younger the students are the less important it becomes. It is always important for the teacher to understand so that the teacher can create examples with similar structures can expand the lesson with similar practices, types of vocabulary, etc. However, I don't think that young students need to know what kind of word they are learning or to define the sentence order.
In an immersion program this may come into play in 4th or 5th grade just as it does in our schools.

This unit was an overview of the basic structure of English grammar. It included descriptions of all of the parts of speech and then made explicit the major uses of each
Type and the basic rules. For example, it gave rules on how to pluralize nouns, rules for the position of adjectives, and rules of when an article is appropriate and how to choose which article. This chapter is well-organized and will serve as an invaluable resource for developing class plans, since I now have an explicit listing of many of the rules.

This section gave good insight on the different parts of speech and how to effectively use them in their correct places. I feel like like this is important information that should be learned by english native speakers, who do not plan to teach ESL, as a way to improve their own english proficiency. Good way to learn the basic (I actually wasnt consious of the names of all these parts of speech). It's good to be able to teach this to the learners. I was already using this grammar but now am more consious with it. Apart from that it was cleaar explanation. In this unit I increased and refreshed my knowledge of parts of phrases and the terms used to differentiate words in a sentence. It is definitely important to know this area with expertise so that I can maintain my student's confidence and my credibility when teaching English abroad.

The unit gives a brief overview of the parts of speech starting from nouns with articles and verbs as inherent parts of the sentence. The insight into nouns and verbs is followed by description of other parts of speech, among others adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, their main divisions (such as types of nouns, pronouns etc.), as well as their functions in the sentences.
Unit2 has taught me that teaching grammar is an important part of language teaching. It also provided me with the useful revision of grammar terms.
