The first unit examines the roles of teacher and student, in particular what makes one a good teacher or a good student/learner. A good teacher is one who uses a variety of roles, including manager, facilitator, and model, and knows when and how to properly utilize and switch between them to aid in the students' learning. A good student/learner is, most importantly, one who desires to learn the new language as well as one who asks questions, listens to the language, and is willing to experiment with vocabulary and sentences. The desire to learn may vary between young learners and adults, who have their own motivations, experiences, and characteristics as students. From this unit, I have learned what I have written above but I also take from it the importance of being a dynamic teacher who, like the students, should also be willing to experiment with new ways of transmitting information in the classroom setting. Different age levels and different language levels will require equally different methods of teaching. The lower levels, especially the beginner and elementary levels, will need the teacher to be a model more often than the higher levels, who are more likely to have outside models for their English language education.

I have understood that the way a teacher motivates, grades,encourages and organises his or her students is vital and instrumental in getting the best out of them. And it is all essential to be a good observer and be prompt in finding out when the learning enviroment is unpleasant during lessons. The lesson then goes into the rolls of a teacher. Rolls such as manager, organizer, assessor, prompter and more. Next the text shifts to what makes a good learner, the desire to learn, ask questions, desire to experiment with the language and other aspects. This unit then goes on to explain what I can expect from adults and young learners with respect to age, life and learning experiences, motivation, nervousness, language awareness and behavior problems. After this came the explanation of the different levels of ability the learners can be grouped into, and what can be expected grammar and fluency wise from each. Finally the lesson touched on what motivates learners. I learnt to be more aware of my different rolls in the classroom. Plus, what to expect from different levels of learners and what motivates them.

Having traveled and seen other cultures and their learning process in action, I can agree with what's said about the cultural nuances of which a teacher should be mindful when teaching. Some of these nuances can be obstructive, if ignored and some can be advantageous to my teaching method, if used correctly.

I learned about how to teach. This unit has taught me that successful teaching is not about the teacher but rather about the learning of the student. For this reason, the teacher has to have both a suitable personality as well as a good relationship with the students. A good teacher has to function sometimes as a manager figure who controls the classroom and organizes activities, often prompting students when they need help, while also playing the role of participant and model when necessary in order to encourage the students to learn on their own. A teacher must also be aware of her students, taking into account their age, their learning ability, motivation, life experience, culture, etc, in order to establish the most successful Type of relationship. If a teacher makes her class interesting and varied and thus caters to her students' particular needs while herself playing the necessary teacher roles, then her students will be able to learn and will be excited about the chance to do so.

I found this unit to be very easy. It was about qualities, responsibilities, and more for teachers and students. Both have to take accountability for the teaching and learning. Students and teachers both do teach and learn from each other. Teachers teach English while the students teach the teacher about their country/culture/beliefs. Neither of which ever stop learning.

I have come to realize that the grammar in the English language is quite complicated. Yet, it was enlightening to do a review of some of the basic grammar rules. It was interesting to review the different types of nouns, verbs, and adjectives. I appreciate that many rules and exceptions must be memorized. While a great deal of the parts of speech can be learned by rules governing them, some of the material is not governed by special rules and must be learned by rote memorization. In Unit 2 we learned the rules of nouns, verbs, adjectives, articles, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns, prepositions, and conjunctions. I learned the differences between past simple and past participle when using verbs. I also learned the definition of a gerund. It was interesting learning the general order for listing adjectives. Overall, this unit gave a solid background on the basics of parts of speech. The tips for teaching certain parts of speech were especially helpful and I look forward to using those ideas in my future lesson plans.

Nouns are the people, animals, things, and places. Some nouns are countable or quantitative, such as eggs, dogs, pens, and shoes. Other nouns are uncountable or qualitative, such as fire, music, and beauty. Verbs are the actions within a sentence. Transitive verbs must be followed by an object, while intransitive verbs cannot be followed by an object. Some verbs can be either transitive or intransitive depending on the situation of the sentence. Adjectives describe nouns. Adverbs describe verbs and adjectives. Adjectives can be comparative, adding -er than to the, or superlative, adding -est. Articles modify nouns to show either a specific item is being referred to (definite) or any of a number is being referred to (indefinite). Gerunds are verbs ending -ing that function as nouns within a sentence. And pronouns replace more precise nouns within a sentence. Prepositions show the relationship between a noun or pronoun and another word in the sentence. Conjunctions link words in a sentence. I think the overall impression that I got from this unit is how complex the English language is when you get down to the subtleties of the language. While finding the subject, object, and verbs may seem simple, even what seems simple to me could be quite challenging to a person whose native language is not English. While I knew that nouns are persons, animals, places, objects, or things, identifying a gerund as a verb ending in -ing but acting as a noun was something that was challenging. And if it's challenging to me, I need to find a way to think around the problem so that I can better explain it to my students. Finding a way to break down and explain the concepts that challenge me, will help me to break down and explain them to my students. While the concepts discussed in this unit involving sentence structure were crucially important, I think that being able to explain the concepts to the non-English speakers that I teach is more important.

This unit has also provided a more in depth overview of the grammar we could be expected to teach our students. I found this a fairly tough unit - as I have not practiced grammar for many years! I realize it is important - but will need practice to teach this again. Grammar is of course one of the hardest parts (and most boring to be honest) of any language. Since I know the grammar by heart it is not in itself hard to learn again, but adding the fact that you need to be able to teach and give examples of this made it so much harder. I could study this section for another month and still not be certain about everything. But I will continue studying until I fell comfortable talking and teaching about it.

This unit went over grammar and why and how we use it, even when we are unaware of it. It really gave me a clearer understanding of grammar, and its proper use in everyday language. Also, the unit broke it down so I?m able to teach it as well as relearning it. I learned there is a lot more to the English language than I previously thought, such as a definite article and, gerunds.
