This lesson made me aware of the multifaceted role that a teacher must fulfill, while bringing attention to the fact that I need to balance these roles. Seeing them clearly laid out like this made it seem very doable and is a little inspiring. It also made me think about learning from students perspective and how important it is to consider how their different motivations and experiences are in shaping their behaviour. One particular factor that struck a chord with me, related to my own language studies, was the impact the learner's first language will have on learning English due to commonality or difference of structure and vocabulary.

When contemplating the duties of a teacher, I did not immediately think about the many roles I must take on Before reading this unit. Of course, a teacher must be patient, enthusiastic, motivational, have a great understanding of the subject, be culturally sensitive, adaptable to different learning styles and levels, and be able to build rapport with students. However, in addition to all of those previously listed qualities, a teacher is also responsible for so many other aspects of classroom learning and wear a number of different hats, so to speak: a manager, organizer, assessor, motivator/prompter, tutor, and more. Perhaps the most important piece of information I have received from this unit is understanding the motivation of students to learn, and depending on their age, cultural background, and level of ability, these motivations can change over time. I think knowing what motivates students to learn will contribute to my own teaching style and better inform me how to motivate my students to participate in return.

I found this unit very interesting, particularly the dynamic between student and teacher and what makes a successful learning environment. The psychology of it it fascinates me and I think motivating and uplifting learners will be the most challenging and enjoyable part of my job in South Korea where I understand learning English after school hours is very much imposed on kids by their parents. I got a good understanding of the different levels of English from A1 to C2 with the european framework, and the more generally used framework that ranges from Beginner to Advanced. I feel that a desire to learn is a precursor to the majority of the other characteristics of good students highlighted in the module, and a desire to teach and see progress in students the key characteristic for the teacher. Accompanied with a caring, sensitive and culturally aware approach I think great results can be achieved. The situational approach to teaching roles is best, and it is informative to learn the differences between age groups and cultures, and that different methods should be employed for different situations. A one-size fits all style of teaching is a myth that has been debunked for me with this module.

This unit has been a very clear and concise introduction to the roles both teachers and students represent in the classroom. This unit contains very useful information that can and will be referred to in the future. I learned what makes a good teacher and what makes a good student. I also learned there are many variables (i.e. age, culture, life experiences) which can affect the classroom environment for which both the teacher and students are responsible. A teacher must make the students feel comfortable, confident, and get them excited about their topic; while the students must have a willingness to listen and ask questions, accept constructive correction, and have the desire to learn. When both parties represent their role with enthusiasm and confidence, it will create a successful learning environment.

I learnt from this unit some characteristics I need to work on in my desire to become a good teacher. It was very useful to learn about the different roles a teacher can play in the classroom. Being aware of these roles and mastering the skill of how to switch between them successfully will make my lessons much more effective. I also learnt that, as a teacher, it is very important to know my students in order to meet their needs. Different learners have different needs; the better I get to know them (what motivates them, their language level, their experiences...) the better the class will flow. It will help them acquire the English language more easily. Over all, I must say this was a very interesting unit. It helped me to go back to basics and to put a closer attention to the relationship between teachers and learners.

Overall, I feel the contents of this unit are important for a future teacher because it teaches different skills and roles required to be a good teacher. In addition, it provides insight to the different levels and ages of student learners and what their needs may be. It is important for a teacher to be sensitive and supportive to students needs and to be able to perceive these needs in the classroom and deal with the students effectively. In order to motivate the students to come to class and learn a new language it is important for the teacher to be enthusiastic, caring, patient and talented to use the proper teaching style appropriately within the lessons and within the age groups. The teacher must also know how to communicate effectively with the students and to capture their attention and desire to learn.

I thought the idea of this unit is very useful. As a native speaker, I never had to learn the basic rules in this fashion, but understanding them is crucial to teaching. It also helps understand why students may be confused. However, I thought the structure of the video and the PDF didn't quite line up very well and it was a little confusing. Also, some answers for the task sheet would have been very helpful for this section.

This unit was about parts of speech (noun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition, pronoun, infinitive, gerund, article, and conjunction). I learned what each's purpose is, and how to use them correctly. I also learned about the irregular instances, and how many of the grammar rules get broken. The most interesting part of this lesson (which is not really saying anything, because grammar is terribly boring) was that adjectives have an order to them. I had never noticed that, yet, can instinctively order them. Crazy language!

I think that this chapter was clear in its explanations and was very helpful. The examples were clear and the definitions were easy to understand. It was a good reminder of the rules which are easily forgotten. It will be helpful to have these notes to show future students.
