This section helped to focus in on the different types of learners a teacher will encounter, and the different components and factors that influence the effectiveness of the classroom. The relationship between the teacher and the student is intertwined in that a good teacher will likely have good students. A good teacher has to be motivated and enthusiastic because they are a model for the students and need to encourage students in the classroom. This section broke down different age groups and the complications that can occur in each. It also broke down the different levels of knowledge of the English language that will determine an appropriate starting point for material taught in the classroom. It is important to monitor each student individually in order to assess their needs and progress, but to do so in a way that doesn't make them become unmotivated or embarrassed to ask questions. It is important for a teacher in a different country to be aware of the customs of students from that country because different cultures approach learning in different ways. Knowing this will help to improve how successful a lesson or overall class experience will be. I learned from Unit 1 the importance of being able to switch between the different roles of being a teacher. For example, going from a manager role in front of the classroom to a observer of the activities in the classroom, to a assessor of student
work. Each of these roles needs a different concentration on teaching new material, seeing the material being worked through, and effectively grading and giving feedback. Being able to switch from one role to another quickly and effectively will yield an interactive classroom that keeps students and the teacher motivated and enthusiastic about the English language.

This unit served as a fair introduction to thinking about second language learning in the classroom. It has been fairly beneficial in giving words to the intuitive feeling one has for what qualities make a good learner. I would be hard pressed to create a better list myself than what was included in the unit.
The section on teachers' roles in the classroom also further helped identify what ways in which teachers function in the classroom. It further helped to illustrate that too much time spent in one role--be it simply managing a class without participating, for example--can potentially negatively effect students. A lot of things included in this lesson are things I have intuitively understood from my years of schooling--what makes a good teacher, what makes a good student, etc--but I have heretofore not seen written down and explained.

This lesson was not as easy as I expected it to be. The multiple choice questions make it confusing sometimes. But what I've learned is that teaching is not just a matter of telling others what you know. The challenge to inspire the students is what attracts me and at the same time not easy to achieve.

This unit covered the many different roles of a teacher within a learning environment. It communicates the idea that we, as teachers, need to remain flexible and be prepared to teach in a number of different ways in accordance to the situation or activity. This unit also covered the role of an effective and engaged language learner in the classroom. It briefly described different challenges that may lay ahead for teaching differing age groups. An example of this may be the lack of motivation from the post puberty group. Another example for another teaching group, is the prior language experience from the adult group of learners, who may want to directly translate words that may not be possible. When encountering these groups and their challenges, we have to adapt our lesson planning, activities and teaching role or style to engage and motivate the learners in the classroom. Teachers need to be aware to the cultural differences in education so that we can maintain a culturally responsive manner and pedagogy.

This unit focused on the defining students in terms age and speaking level. Age was mainly split into two levels, adults and
young learners. The unit gave a brief overview of the strength and weaknesses of both age categories. Adults may be more motivated to learn while young learners may be able to pick up sounds and grammar much more naturally.
The most interesting part of the this unit concerned how teachers and learning is can differ from culture to culture. Most of the difficulty I encounter in my
job is that I am constantly comparing how I was taught as a student and mirroring those techniques with hit and miss results. This is made more difficult because I can't really mimic a
korean teacher either. All and all, there were some eye opening observations.

The qualities that embody good teachers and good learners were discussed. I found the breakdown of how a teacher functions in the classroom particularly helpful. It showed how teachers should adapt to their class and change the techniques they use according to the temperament of their learners, so that together they can build a strong relationship which leads to meaningful learning. We also discussed the differences between adult learners and
young learners. With adult learners, it is important to show respect, as they are your peers, but imperative that you monitor the class properly, so your students will show the same respect to you. With young learners the approach to learning a second language will be different with each age group. The easiest and also the most active would be the 2-7 year olds. While they have short attention spans, their ability to adapt to a new language is great, as they can learn it alongside their first language, in hopes mastering both together. I am most excited about
working with adults, to see what I can learn from them, as I myself am learning a second language!

It seems that the hardest task in teaching the English language is all of the irregularities! Languages, such as

In my travels throughout the world, I have found that the tendency to confuse subject pronouns with object pronouns as well as confusing possessive pronouns with possessive adjectives is one of the largest obstacles to overcome.

This unit was a good refresher of English grammar. It will help a lot with teaching students about why we say and write things the way it is supposed to be written (things that we do intuitively now). There were also activities that were suggested that we could use for our students. I learnt some new things also. This topic was a very helpful review of basic grammar. As a native speaker, it is easy to forget the many rules which determine why we speak the way we do, and not knowing how to properly explain them can result in frustrating a student of the language. This unit gave a very thorough overview of basic English grammar; as a native English speaker, I learned more specifically the reasoning behind particular elements of grammar, as well as how to explain to someone who is not a native speaker what each part of speech is and how to use it.

The unit also pointed out ""...we often are unaware of what we are actually using or why we are using it!"" That It is a very concise overview of English grammar and the explanations are clear. Being an English teacher to foreign learners, I didn't find this unit particularly difficult, but there are parts of it that I still found helpful. I believe that in learning the foundations of speech I have received a wider, simpler outlook on the way English can and should be taught. I learned that as a native speaker, the things I take for granted each day, are difficult for ESL to learn and understand. So I now feel more confident to teach grammar to my students after reading and testing my knowledge.
