Though some of this information initially came across as common sense within the realm of ESL, I found that reading through this unit helped me organize the way I think of the teacher's roles, factors influencing students' motivations and behaviors, language level abilities, and the traits that I should aspire to as a hopeful ESL teacher. I feel like this unit has set up an organized, non-threatening atmosphere in which I can feel comfortable learning more about how best to go about teaching English as a second language.

Being an English Native speaker living in China, I found this unit very helpful and learned a lot about what makes a good teacher and a good learner. The unit goes over the relationship between learners and teachers. The importance of what makes a good teacher directly corresponds with what helps to create a good student. It also explains the various levels of learning and the differing motivations that
children/adults may have when taking this course. I think that good teachers have a better chance of having good students. All the different roles of a teacher have their own place and time. From what I have learned so far, I believe I would do better with beginner through pre-intermediate learners. I think this was a good unit to start the course with. I found this unit, and the research that has gone into it, particularly useful in terms of the teacher's/students' role and their respective relationships and, in particular, the teachers' role as set out under the various headings. The section relating to the differences of adult learners -vs- younger learners is also useful.

This unit identifies a good teacher and a good learner and the qualities they should have, and the categories of different levels of learners helps the teacher position their teaching object . A good teacher would be able to play different roles in a lesson according to the needs of the situation and lesson arrangement. The unit also reminds the possible differences between different learners from different ages, learning and life experiences, original culture and language backgrounds. Teachers should be able to adjust their teaching based on what students they are teaching. To establish rapport and supportive, caring and positive relationship between the teacher and the learner would be absolutely helpful for the teaching and learning.

I enjoy reading about the different teaching roles because it is a reminder to incorporate styles that aren't natural to my disposition or experience. I believe that using many teaching styles is important to reach the needs of all students and it is good to remember other roles.
The role of the prompter is something that I would like to develop further. I naturally ask students many questions to check understanding, and involve students in the lecture, but I wonder if I couldn't fill that role more completely. I would like for students to deduce complete grammatical points through prompting. I also think that it would be fun to coordinate prompting into communicative practices.
I actually think that I am the facilitator to a fault. I don't like presenting, but I need to remember that one of the benefits of me as a teacher is that I am a native speaker and I need to share that with them. I have a few ideas for implementing more teacher speaking time. For example, I could create dramas that I act out while they respond to questions of summarize the story. During instruction I also need to focus on having them repeat after me 3 x 3.
I think these new ideas will produce good results and of course provide me with more resources for reinforcement.

I was able to reflect on different teachers that I have had over the years and how I liked it when they were able to perform certain roles, making the classroom a more pleasant, less confusing environment. I also learned that it is important that a teacher know how to motivate students to learn, and ways that can be done, instead of merely presenting the information. I learned how to group my students into ability level, and what the different ability levels are, as well as what capabilities the students should have at these certain levels. I liked the section on the differences between
young learners at different ages and Adult Learners, including the fact that they differ in Experience (Life, language and prior learning), in Motivation, and in Behavior while in class.

This unit really helped me understand the various roles

A great ESL teacher has to have a good understanding of all the roles he/she has to be in the classroom- a good model, a good facilitator, a good assessor, etc. Furthermore, an ESL teacher has to understand not only the level of students he/she is teaching, but also have an understanding of how the cultural backgrounds can have an effect in the learning experience of the students and adjust depending on the audience.

In this unit I learnt about the different roles and responsibilities of teachers and learners. I didn't know the names of the teaching roles
Before, and I learnt how each is very distinctive, yet you need to encompass all of those roles in order to be a strong teacher. I thought it was interesting that so much of the unit focused on the relationships between teachers and students. Teaching is, of course, knowing your subject, but there is so much emotion in teaching. It's so important to be warm and open, so your students will be comfortable is asking questions. Being able to recognize the different learning styles and reasons for motivation in various ages and skill levels will help me as a teacher to fine-tune a lesson to best suit those students' needs.

It covers the levels of knowledge beginning to advanced to categorize the English skill levels. There are many different roles of teacher. There are different categories of learners that a teacher must acknowledge. A teacher must take all these variables into consideration when teaching a class and should not depend on one approach only. A teacher should use different modes of teaching as it pertains to different circumstances. This introductory lesson really made me consider the fundamental roles of a teacher and a learner. While everyone has a uniqueness to their teaching and learning style, examining the core qualities of what makes for a quality learning experience helps to arrive at a clear understanding of how we can connect, appreciate and learn or teach more effectively.

I learnt about the qualities that a good teacher should have which made me consider my own approach and how to improve it. The roles of the teacher were explained in good detail and should help to make more sense of the teaching process. The characteristics of good learners confirmed a lot of what I have already learnt in the past but also reminded me of how I can possibly motivate learners in the future. The breakdown of language levels was more detailed than any other breakdown that I have seen and it will help me to identify learners? language ability more accurately in the future. The final section on motivation was also a good reminder of what possibilities there are. Motivation in learners is essential and as such a teacher should always attempt to motivate learners as effectively as possible, and knowing what typically motivates people to learn a language definitely helps.

General motivation for learning English as a Second Language. It is very good to know what are the qualities of a good teacher and how important is the teacher in the class. Knowing different age and levels of students, it will help us to prepare how to approach and motivate them when we teach in our class. Very useful to know their levels of characters and response. This unit, while a good overview, is a bit clunky when taken
online. It's very dry and generally uninteresting. I imagine it is a good first day lesson in person. However, I found myself (even with all my enthusiasm for learning) drifting while taking this lesson online.

I benefited most from the explanation of the roles of a teacher in a classroom, because it is important to have a solid understanding of each so that they can be adapted to any learning audience. Most notably I learned that keeping a healthy balance of managing, assessing, and participating in classroom activities as the instructor is key to maintaining interest and motivation in the students, and could possibly stunt their learning processes if not observed carefully. Also, learning the various age-based language acquisition issues for students in motivation, attention span and willingness to experiment with their new language skills was very helpful to consider as a future instructor of possibly both older and younger students.

This was an interesting unit. There were a lot of things I learned regarding the relationship between the student and teacher, which I was not clear about in the past. At first I thought this would be a unit that I could do with minimum mental efforts because I though most of the topics would be general knowledge. In this unit I learned that the teacher has many different roles they play in the classroom and that it's important for a teacher to be able to move in and out of these roles to best suit the style of lessons and learners.
Caring about the students and knowing what difficulties they might face will also help lessons run more smoothly. It's important to know what age group and English level the students are to better understand their abilities and what problems they may have. Whether it be a fear of making mistakes or if they're from a culture where they will be talkative or quiet.
Knowing their reasons for attending lessons will also help the teacher know how much external motivating they will need to do. For example, if the students are there because they want to learn a new language for
work, travel etc or if their parents/company are making them.

In order to teach successfully, there are several factors that go into being a great teacher and being a great student. Factors that will assure that a teacher will advance their student swiftly toward their goal of learning English proficiently. In this lesson, I have learned that being positive, motivating, and knowledgable are some of the best and most important qualities a teacher can have in order to do this. Knowing your student's level of mastery from the outset is a deciding factor in how the lessons will go. I also learned that a student's motivation to learn is paramount to the student/teacher relationship. Without motivation, learning will be flat and dry and the teacher will have a difficult time getting through to the student. I also know from experience that being entertaining and interesting is one of the best ways to get people motivated. Enthusiasm is contagious!

In Unit 1, we learned about what makes a good teacher and a good learner. A good teacher is kind, patient, is able to motivate students, has a good knowledge of the subject matter, and is fair. A good student is willing to listen to the target language, willing to experiment and make mistakes, able to stay focused and motivated, and able to accept feedback and corrections.
A teacher plays many roles in the classroom and should be able to switch seamlessly between roles throughout the lesson. These roles include controller, organizer, assessor, prompter, participant, tutor, resource, model, and observer. For example, when a teacher participates in group activities to motivate the students from within the group, she is playing the role of participant. When a teacher asks a follow up question, she is playing the role of prompter.
When preparing a lesson, a teacher must consider the knowledge level of her students. A beginner has zero to basic knowledge of the language. An elementary level student can form basic sentences about simple topics. A pre-intermediate student is able to communicate on a greater amount of topics but still makes basic errors. An intermediate student can communicate on a wide range of topics but still lacks accuracy and fluency. An upper intermediate student can speak well about a wide range of topics but still makes a few errors. An advanced learner can speak and comprehend well and is ready for more subtle topics.
A good teacher will also consider the possible benefits and challenges of teaching different age groups. For example, while students ages 2-7 are keen, eager to please their teachers, and enjoy games, they have a shorter attention span and may not have mastered their native language yet. Students ages 8-13 are very receptive and not worried about making mistakes. They have good knowledge of their native language and possibly some of their target language. At this age they become more self absorbed and friends become important. Students ages 14-18 tend to be more self conscious and less likely to take risks. They feel peer pressure and may not want to be there, but they have a good amount of learning experience at this point. Adult learners have lots of experience learning, tend to be self motivated, and have more fixed expectations about learning. A good teacher will design her lessons with the learners in mind.
Unit 1 wrapped up with a few reasons why people learn English (or a second language in general). They may seek new career opportunities, hope to travel in an English speaking country, have an interest in languages, want to communicate with a partner or friend in English, or want to watch movies and read books in English. A good teacher and good learner can
work together to accomplish these goals.

I've learned that teachers engage in a variety of tasks while teaching an activity. Good teachers should be kind and patient, really love teaching, be lively and entertaing, to have a good subject knowledge, to ne rapport and interaction with the class, to be able to motivate students and to know the students' weakness and to try to deal with those weakness. While a good student should have a willingness to listen to the language and ask questions, to have a desire to experiment with the langauge and to have acceptance of error correction. This unit provides a coure-taker with a general view of the teacher-student relationship, and how it should be, along with giving a right picture of how a good teacher and a good student should be like. The characteristics mentioned here are telling and summarative to the real picture of the teacher and the student. The style and language used in this unit are so simple and easily comeperhended. The unit has a very well organized and informative content, beside being a good start to begin the road of this course. Under each point metioned there are either some examples or comperisons to clerify this point. Or the point is explained with a simple picture of what is going on in different classrooms, which makes the learner feel or see himself/herself in that particular situation or condition.I really like how this unit keeps it nice and easy and at the same time helpful to learners.Not to miss the task sheet at the end of the unit, which helps the learner to self-test himself/herself and to guide our mind to how the test will be like. I hope that what I have learned here will guide me along in this course and in my teaching career. When I took the test I found it really valid and it took me few minutes to complete, but then I found this part, which I feel that it has a kind of a technical problem, because I wrote down more that 50 words, but it still dose not want to accept it and to take me to the result page. So I want to know what is the problem here, it is 50 words you need or 500 words. Thank you (The following words should not be counted, because I am just jotting down words to convince the system that I exceeded the 50 words.... It helps a lot to understand how to make a good balance between what the teacher has to teach and what the students are waiting from the teacher.

I always really liked grammar in High School. I had a teacher who would allow us to instantly call out and correct our fellow students if they made grammatical errors. This was a fun, and competitive way of learning. She also would give us hand outs of sentences with errors and it was up to us to fix them. I think some areas of instruction from her class will come in handy when teaching my own lessons.

This unit was an excellent overview of fundamental grammar tools. I found each section useful. This is the knowledge I have lacked as an English teacher. While I prefer not to teach all the rules or grammar, there are moments in the classroom when it is nessesary for the student to recognize patterns and apply formulas. I also believe that it is important to maintain credibility as a teacher, which makes having a basic knowledge of these rules important. I have also learned in the classroom that there are students who prefer to approach language by memorizing rules, and it is important for the teacher to have the tools to accommodate various kinds of learners. While many of these rules are enate to native speakers, an ESL student will struggle with the placement of parts of speech. I particularly recall my students struggling with the concept of prepositions and their placement. I learned a lot in this unit, and I know in will continue to look back at my chapters for reference.

The content in this unit did an excellent
job in covering the grammatical necessities in becoming an English teacher to foreign language students. A wide range of terms and uses are explained and exemplified, with the result being that much more information is learnt in the course of study than i had expected. In fact, i would be the first to admit that there were several parts which entailed the terminology and intricacies of the English language that i had not even begun to master. Ironically, despite my ignorance in certain areas of this unit, i feel much more confident now in my grammatical understanding of the language whilst also getting some insight into the teaching capacity for said topics, as i have now played the role of the student in my continuing efforts to become the teacher. I'm also enjoying the use of definite and indefinite articles i have peppered throughout this overview.

From this section I have been able to refresh my prior knowledge of this subject and what is needed to help portray this to students and provided clear examples when teaching. I found this unit extremely interesting as I realised that I had retained much of my early school learning without even realising. It showed the importance of the correct use of sentence structure and covered the most common areas which a teacher would be using in a classroom environment and during conversation. This unit focused on the basic structure of English parts of speech and explanations of various "rules"" of creating sentences. This unit was nothing more than a review of past schooling and served to reinforce my belief that there are many examples where the rules just do not exist. That certainly makes learning and teaching English a real challenge." This unit gave me a chance to review on the grammar that I use in my everyday life but never cam to think about why and how I use my grammar. I'm now more confident in explaining the most basic, simple grammar to others and certainly have a clearer understanding of the grammar system myself. This unit helped me remember some of the basic rules and regulations of the English language and also made me realize some of the common mistakes and errors that I usually make. Also while going through the unit I learned some new and very interesting details of the various parts of the language.

While my grasp of the English language is certainly natural and not lacking, I find myself struggling with the parts of speech as taught in this unit. I had a basic understanding of the grammatical points
Before completing the unit, but found that the finer points, such as gerunds and prepositions to be rather trying. I can see how a student coming in from another language would need to understand English as a part of systems that must be learned in the way one must learn a science -- however it gets even more complicated than that, considering how many exceptions our language tends to throw out. I feel as though I will be returning to these lessons in the future in my professional and personal understanding of the language.

In every English class that I've attended to, Parts of Speech is always discussed in the beginning. It is mainly the basic topic that an English learner has to know. I'd like to believe that this topic is a considered to be one of the big umbrellas in any English subject. It discusses the different parts of speech that branches out to more specific rules under each part. The general knowledge that this unit teaches will surely be a great help to any English learner as well as to any experienced English teacher. Parts of Speech discusses the general components of the language that would strengthen the student's English foundation. In addition, this is also helpful to English teachers as this would serve as a reviewer for them about the basics. The explanations discussed were simple yet concrete. However, further readings/research should be done in order to discuss it extensively in a class.

The major thing I took away from this unit is I had no previously knowledge of the difference between intransitive verbs and transitive verbs. Actually, I didn't even know the distinction existed and so it was informative to find that out. I hope my understanding of the difference is sufficient to be able to teach it as I've just been relying on my natural knowledge of the language on this matter. Additionally, I was vaguely aware of the definition of what a gerund was but it was nice to have it more precisely defined.

Each unit I finish I take new things and information with me in order to give myself a better idea of how to properly to an ESL class effectively. I can't wait to get my
certificate and take it with me half way across the world. This unit was a good review for me. I had forgotten some of the definitions of the parts of speech such as, transitive verbs, intransitive verbs, comparative adjectives and superlative adjectives. Transitive verbs are followed directly by an object. Intransitive verbs cannot be followed by an object. Comparative adjectives compare two objects. Superlative adjectives compare more than two objects. unit 2 has enlightened me more on the nouns and verbs which I have forgotten lately.

I found this section to be a bit difficult. I know the English language and consider myself to be a great speaker. However, there were numerous words that I did not remember. I know how to speak and create sentences but I did not remember the correct terms for the words until reviewing this unit. I thought this unit was very helpful and it helped me go back to my Elementary school days and relearn things that I was taught when I was young.
