This unit covers the qualities of good learners and teachers, the roles of teachers, levels of language learning, and the tendencies of adult and young learners. I feel I learned more about the correlation between good teaching and motivated students, which in turn become good learners. It should be obvious, but I hadn't thought if it in this way Before: If a teacher can remain lively, entertaining, patient, and kind, the teacher will be able to keep the class engaged and motivated. The teacher will also be able to correct students in a gentle way, so that they learn from their mistakes but are not discouraged. In turn, this kind of a student/teacher relationship will encourage students to attend classes because they are interesting, and it will make them feel safe to ask questions and experiment with language, which are both crucial for good language learning. I also learned about the differences between adult and young learners. I think motivation is an important factor. Adults usually have very strong motivation to attend class and learn (career, exams like TOEFL) and so they will be self-motivated. But for young learners cultivating motivation can be a challenge because they usually did not make the choice to attend class, and they probably are unable to think of the long-term benefits of learning English.

Sections one's reflection. I think this was a great entry level reading. Understanding what both we, as teachers need to know about ourselves and those we are teaching is very important. Having the knowledge of how each age level learns will make everyone's experience more enriched. I enjoyed the brake down of roles a teacher can take in the class room. Not only did I learn something but my brain started to see images of how I would be in the class room doing these roles. The video was very helpful as it gave wonderful breakdowns and examples. This unit describes the main characteristics of good teachers and good learners and what a good student-teacher relationship is based upon. It focuses on the different roles the teacher has and when and how to adapt these to each circumstance. There is also a clear overview of the different language levels with their description and a specific focus on the differences between learners of different ages and backgrounds. This unit has given me a clear idea on how to adapt a variety of roles when teaching, taking into account at all times the age, cultural background and personality/character of each student in order to get the best out of each of them. The main focus should not be as much on the teaching, but above all on the learning of the students. A teacher who is motivated, enthusiastic and sensitive will reflect this on their students, who will enjoy the learning process at all times.

This unit gave a breakdown of the roles of the teacher and of the student, while also giving information on the levels that teachers will find their students in and what to expect to see in each level. For me the most informative section was the roles in which the teacher must take throughout the school year, and knowing how to be effective in each one. For example, when being an assessor, the teacher must be fair and equal to all students. This is one that stood out to me, due to having bad experiences with teachers who did not exhibit fairness, and did not show awareness for the student's feelings or confidence.

The most eye-opening part was the difference between the asian style of learning compared to the Latin american style, where teachers in Asia are expected to give all the information and students are more subdued. In this case the teacher is more a facilitator and manager. A Latin American class might be more gregarious and outgoing, which would be considered rude in Asia.

Unit 1 is a good introduction to understand what a good teacher can do and what traits good students have. By understanding those traits, I can utilize them to my benefit when teaching. Also, to understand my strengths and weaknesses as a teacher can help me to hone my skills to be a better teacher and to understand the students' needs more. Since I teach children, I have not considered what traits are beneficial when teaching adults. Now, for future reference, I have the knowledge and it will serve me well.

It is important to understand that each student is different whether it is their age In this unit I have learnt the characteristics of a good teacher as well as the role of the teacher during the lessons. Moreover I have learnt the characteristics of a good learner and the different age groups in which learners can be divided. Furthermore this unit shows the different language levels of the learners. I have learned what attributes are required of a good teacher, and the different ways that a teacher can approach certain situations, for example sometimes it is appropriate to be a manager, and other times a facilitator. I also now understand the differences between an adult learner and a younger learner, and how each should be catered to.

It was very clear to understand the characteristics of each levels by the video clips. With the unit 1 PDF file, I had some limit to understand about the category of the levels. However, after I watch the video clip, it became very clear. It was interesting to know about the differences between the learner's ages. i think i learned some qualities of a good teacher .on my opinion the most important of teacher's personality is being lively and interesting and relationship between teacher and student is involving all students equally throughout the lesson. As as teacher, it is important to understand what their roles is in the education process and when to implement these roles. It is also important to learn cultural differences to ensure the teacher can ensure no boundaries are crossed. A teacher must understand the learners' motivation, experience, and limitations to learning. This unit has taught me the value of being a supportive, patient and sensitive teacher. This is especially important when maintaining a student?s confidence and motivation. In my opinion, it is positive reinforcement and a love for teaching that will make a good student great, no matter what their age.

This unit was a good introduction to the teaching course. It gave me a chance to reflect upon attributes both of a good teacher and learner and the importance of taking into account the starting point of the student and their age group. I also reflected opon cultural factors and levels of general education which can effect the learning process. For example Paraguay is a high "emabressment"" culture which makes it in general difficult for people to take risks and to be corrected in front of their peers. In the rural/poorer areas many people have not completed a general level of education and lack study skills. But this does not mean that they are not motivated to learn but that the learning process needs to be focused on ""whole body"" learning and not just on reading and writing or finding information in books. I look forward to discovering more in the upcoming lessons."

In This unit I have learned much about the different roles of a teacher, and how to apply those roles to a classroom setting. In this unit, I've learned the Basics and foundation of teaching. Some of the important qualities that a teacher should have are a friendly and caring personality, the ability to motivate students, a love of teaching and a good rapport with student. A good learner on the other hand should have qualities such as a good motivation, a willingness to ask questions, and a desire to experiment with the language. I think that one of the important points which I learned from this section is the idea that a truly good teacher will be able to inspire their students to be good learners. This section also covered many strategies for increasing motivation of students, making exceptions for different methods at different age and skill levels. The importance of teaching at the right skill level for the class was also discussed. Another important aspect which was touched upon in this section was the many different roles that a teacher may have at different points in time and how to manage these different roles. Some of these roles include, the teacher as a manager, teacher as an observer, teacher as a facilitator, and teacher as a model. These different roles and aspects of teaching are all important and necessary for different reasons. All in all this section taught me a great deal about student teacher relationships, differences which must be accounted for when teaching different ages and skill levels, and the many roles which a teacher must fill at different points in time.

I feel that knowing the distinctions between the roles that teachers can play is very helpful, because all of the roles are important. To properly facilitate learning, a teacher must assume all of the roles at various points. Acting in only one role would deprive the students of diverse opportunities to learn. Also, I learned the distinctions between the types of language proficiencies, which will help me accurately assess my students abilities, and therefore will help me create lesson plans that accurately cater to their learning needs.

This unit really showed the numerous roles one has to take on as a teacher, ranging from managing a lesson to being a good model upon which the students will base their learning. It also taught the differences one will encounter when working with younger learners versus adults, in regards to motivation and difficulties one may encounter. It went through the stages a learner may be in, ranging from beginner or Basic A1 to the advanced learner. I learned a lot that I did not already know regarding how many different roles a teacher must take on in order to be successful and motivating as an instructor.

As a history education major, many of this information is a review of what I have learned in my undergraduate career. From this unit I have learnt about many characteristics of a good teacher and good student. I believe the most important characteristic of a good teacher is being kind and sensitive to the students, their culture and level of language. It is important to be able to motivate students and encourage them to take risks in their learning. I think it is beneficial to know and understand the different roles of a teacher. It would be beneficial to your teaching if you can be aware of each role, how to move between them during lessons and be able to reflect on the roles you are playing. The differences between students will influence the way you teach. Age difference will play a huge part in teaching decisions. As a primary school teacher I am aware of how young learners behave, their experience and motivation but will have to learn more about teaching adults. I found the different levels of language abilities very informative and hope to become more knowledgeable in this area to assist me to assess students and know where they are in their learning.

I enjoyed Unit 1 as an introduction to learning how to teach. I found the course material interesting, thorough, and easy to follow. I particularly enjoyed the section on the different language levels. I learned a great deal about the different types of roles teachers play within a classroom setting. There are many different techniques and methods teachers can employ to facilitate learning in the classroom. For example, depending on the situation or activity, teachers may be placed in the role of managers, organizers, assessors, prompters, participants, tutors, facilitators, models, or observers. All of these roles can be useful at various times during the lessons. Factors that may affect student learning can be age, learning experience, motivation, nervousness, language awareness, behavior problems, life experience, cultural/first language, and language level. Adult learners tend to have an established opinion about learning from past experiences, where as children usually do not have this, and are more open to trying new things. The language level of the classroom also plays a large role in how to teach. Here are some of the things I learned from this unit which had the most (or more) influence on me: I learned the importance of striking a balance between prompting students (offering vocabulary, grammar, etc.) and allowing students to work things out by themselves. I also learned that, when the students - in groups - are pursuing an activity which I've assigned, that I may sometimes participate, but that I should not allow myself to become the focus of the activities. I also will not participate in all activities since I need to pay attention to what?s going on in the class environment in general. In addition, I understand the great responsibility I have as a model for English usage. I found the section on Learners very helpful, and it's something I will definitely keep in mind when I am teaching. The qualities of good teachers and good students are something that I've learned through experience, but it's good to be reminded of these things.

When reading this unit, especially the section on roles a teacher must be able to perform, I kept on remembering things my japanese teacher would do. Now I see he was fulfilling these roles.

In summary, this unit focused on the essential characteristics and roles of a good teacher along with a description of what makes a good learner. I enjoyed learning about the different roles especially because i am able to apply these different roles to my current job of teaching math to other college students. One of the biggest challenges for me that i have become even more aware of is the idea of correcting a student without decreasing motivation. This is a very difficult action to master as most people feel discouraged after getting an incorrect answer but i continue to improve my abilities to try and motivate these students to continue forward and be proud of their work. I like to think that wrong answers are inevitable and necessary in order to receive the right answer.

Unit 1 taught me the different roles a teacher can take, and when those roles are necessary or appropriate. I also learned about differences in learning styles between adult and youth students. In order to better reach students, a teacher should learn what motivates the individual to learn a new language and incorporate those motivations into some class lessons. In this unit, I have gained much knowledge in regarding the different roles of a teacher, which includes manager, facilitator, tutor, prompter; the different age groups of a young learner,which includes 3 different groups; and the characteristics of the different levels, which includes starter, elementary, intermediate, and upper-intermediate. I found this unit a good introduction to the foundations of teaching. It has given some good background on the motivations of students and the differences between adult learners and younger students. It was interesting to understand the drivers behind the students motivations for learning another language, and the best ways for these motivations to be utilised.

I feel this unit clearly breaks down classroom roles from teachers and students. I have taught English for six years and completely agree that rolls often need to shift and change to adapt to students needs and activities at that time. It was interesting for me to learn the european equivalent to the american student levels.

This unit is an extremely low level overview of what it means to be a teacher or a student. Having taught already it wasn't really very helpful for me. I did find the section listing the six levels of the Common european Framework interesting. I'm not sure this particular lesson translates well in writing. Being a good teacher is something you have to experience first hand. Either from teaching yourself or by learning from a teacher you admire.

The unit exampled that depending on the class and the activity the role of the teacher will be different. To be a good teacher it is important to learn what role to play and when. The unit also informed me about different motivations a learner will have to take an English language course. It explained the different levels of language skills. In my current English teaching experience I feel that I am playing the role of manager too much, and should look into ways to facilitate and focus activities toward my students. In addition to the factors cited in the unit, I believe there are a variety of institutional factors that can influence student motivation, including compulsory attendance and standardized testing.

This unit talked mainly about what qualities good teachers and learners possessed, teaching roles, the levels of language learning and the differences between young and adult learners. The roles of teachers was an important part for me. It's easy to see where I'm likely to have issues with certain roles--mostly as manager or controller since I'm usually a fairly introverted person who isn't used to being in any kind of spotlight. As a result I've been taking any opportunities that arise to practice having attention on me. I don't think I'll have any issues with that role as long as I'm confident in the subject matter.

This unit explained what a good teacher should be, what a good student should be, what the roles of each should be, how the dynamics between the two should be, which some of the barriers for teaching and learning are, and how students are classified according to their skills. Many of the information and examples that I saw on this unit reminded me of some of my own experience as a student because I related to it or because I could identify some of my professors as acting according to the content of the lesson. I have always considered myself a good student, so I tend to forget how other students are; accordingly, this lesson made me more aware of the great range of differences in students and their likelihood to prevail in class. I never imagined that adult students would be more nervous than young students or that kids between 8 and 12 years of age were more receptive to new languages than teenagers. The information related to age was the most influential for me.

This unit really highlighted the importance of varying your lesson plans and teaching style according to the Types of learners in a given classroom. One activity that you've seen success with in a group of beginner level very young learners will likely be wildly inappropriate for adults, even with the same language proficiency. There are several facets of a student's life aside from the obvious age and language level that will inform the type of classroom activities planned, but also how they will be carried out. One of the most interesting to me is cultural difference, as I plan on teaching young learners in South East Asia. I will have to keep in mind both the drastic and subtle differences from the North american school environment in which I was raised and educated in order to Foster motivation and see success with my students.

Unit 1 was a good overview of what characteristics and qualities are needed to be a good teacher and student. It delves into the different roles a teacher needs to play in the classroom (such as observer and model) and varies situations in which a certain role may be more appropriate. It also discusses how culture, age, and background may affect the Type of student one has in the classroom, and began to delve into the subject of how certain lessons are more/less appropriate for certain levels of student. Unit 1 also gave a brief summary of the various levels of students, as well as their UK equivalent. It is a good overview of the general teaching atmosphere, and will be useful to think about in terms of what role I play in the classroom, depending on my end goal and type of student.

This Unit has taught me how to identify the different parts of speech, especially identifying them in a sentence. I learnt that a basic sentence consist of a Subject + Verb + Object. I also learnt that a noun names people, animals, place, things, qualities and states. there are different types mostly used are common and proper nouns. Pronouns are substitutes for nouns. I learnt that an Adjective modifies a noun while and adverb modifies verbs, adjectives and other adverbs. All together this unit was very helpful to my understanding of grammar and parts of speech.

This unit was a great review of the parts of speech. I studied nouns and learned about countable and uncountable nouns for the first time (with that terminology.) The review of adjectives and certain rules was helpful. The same can be said of definite and indefinite articles. In the section of verbs I especially appreciated learning about the distinction between transitive and intransitive verbs. I learned a good system for thinking about adverbs: Manner, Time, Place, degree, Frequency. Finally I enjoyed reviewing the intricacies of pronouns, prepositions and conjunctions. This unit reminded me of how I take the details of grammar for granted in my native English tongue.

I have learned the important classification of parts of the speech. It was good to learn some tricky words causing problems to students. The analysis of a sentence is extremely helpful to teach students different parts of speech. The most significant thing I have learned were problems with possessive pronouns and possessive adjectives. In this unit, they have shown the basic structure of the grammatical rules. I have learned quite a lot reviewing about the basic structure of putting sentences together. The video has also helped me process my lesson plan much easier. It has helped me to refresh my English grammar understanding. This lesson served as a refresher course for English grammar, much of which I had learned in primary and secondary school. Some of the more basic rules I had never formally learned, as a native English speaker. This lesson (and its accompanying explanation of grammar) will be useful in teaching my students the fundamentals of English grammar.

This unit's content was basically a crash course in basic grammar subjects, ranging from simple to more complex sentences, and analyzing each word and its purpose in sentences we create and take for granted as native speakers. From Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives and simple parts of sentences to different Pronoun types, Auxiliary verbs, Gerunds, and Articles, most of the basic grammar points in English are covered. Being mostly review for me, I can see how this can be overwhelming to learners of English and would definitely take the time to hammer these into my future students.

Unit two looks at English grammar, in particular, parts of speech and explores how sentences are made up of the different parts of speech. It explains the importance of each of the different parts and also looks at how one part can affect another. Unit two also discusses the rules that allow you to identify the different parts of speech and the exceptions to these rules. What I learnt from unit two was that each of the different parts of speech can be further broken down into sub categories. English grammar can be both complex and confusing. Overall I found this unit to be interesting and informative.

This unit outlines the different parts of speech of composing a sentence and describes their usage in detail. Parts of speech is the backbone of grammar. Understand the composition, and learning to break down a sentence into different structures would help non-Native speakers to speak fluently as well as be able to comprehend reading materials better. Nouns can be countable or uncountable. Adjectives can be used to make comparatives and superlatives. Verbs can be simple past, past participle, present or continuous. Verbs can also be transitive or intransitive. Adverbs are made by adding -ly onto the end of an adjective. Pronouns can be personal, possessive and reflexive. It was helpful to review the fundamentals of the English language. As a native speaker, I often take for granted the complexities of the grammar I use everyday when speaking English. This unit is helpful in breaking down the different parts of the language and I will use this unit as a reference point in the future.

There are eight (or nine of you separate preposition and conjunctions) parts of speech reviewed in this unit. A noun names people, places, things, animals, qualities and states. There are five types of nouns: common, proper, compound, abstract and collective. Adjectives describe nouns and are often used in clusters or groups of two or three. There are comparative adjectives and superlative adjectives. Articles consist of two types: indefinite articles such as a and an, and definite articles such as the. Verbs are action and state words. There are transitive verbs, intransitive verbs, auxiliary verbs and infinitives. Adverbs add meaning or information to the action, quality or state denoted by a verb and they can also modify an adjective or another adverb. The five main types are manner, place, time, degree and frequency. Gerunds are the -ing form of a verb used as a noun. Pronouns are used instead or in place of more precise nouns or noun phrases. There are four types: personal, possessive, reflexive and relative. Prepositions show the relationship between a noun or a pronoun and some other word in the sentence. This unit refreshed my memories on parts of speech while at the same time humbled my knowledge of the English language. As a native speaker, I at times felt the rules were sometimes confusing. It's true that many times we use these rules in our daily language without thinking about why we speak in the order of which we do. I can see that much of how we learn rules of speech is through constant usage and association. I will definitely take this into consideration when I teach.

Now I am working primarily as a kindergarten teacher. And some things like, reflexive pronouns I have not reviewed since College composition. Now with my kindergarteners I want to teach more parts of speech but they are slowly learning how to recognize nouns, verbs, and adjectives. I am sure I will use this chapter with other students I teach privately. In this section we learned about the forming of sentences using parts of speech. A sentence can be composed of many parts of speech, but will usually has a subject, and a verb. Some of the parts of speech that were learned were: Nouns, which are people, places, or things . Verbs, which are action or doing words like run, jump, or climb Pronouns, which replace a noun and can show ownership like my, his, your. Adverbs, which describe how a verb is being done, like Slowly, gently, fast. Conjunctions, which are words that join two clauses eg: John ran fast, AND tripped over his shoelaces. I learned that a word can be a different part of speech depending on how and where in a sentence it is used and so we must be careful when teaching this to stress the rules for each part of speech and use lots of examples in order to build familiarity as to how they look and sound when used correctly.

I found this unit very easy to work through as I have studied german as a second language. The grammar rules are very similar and due to years of work in German, I have become very well versed in grammar rules. I think this will benefit my future students as I understand the road blocks and frustrations of studying grammar in another language, and I will be able to use my own past experiences to better explain these concepts to my students.

Getting my head around all the terminology in this unit was certainly a challenge, but I now understand the basics of grammar. The rules of how to use and where to use verbs, adverbs and prepositions has now been clearly outlined which allows me to justify the structures of sentences better.The examples and extra information in the video was helpful and made things clearer for me when I revisited the notes, especially the section about verbs.Also, the way the teacher relayed the information helped compartmentalise the parts of speech as well as show them in relation to one another.

This unit was challenging me, had to spend extra time figuring out the language again. It's been awhile since i've looked at and thought about the English Language. This unit was a fantastic overview of the different parts of speech. I learnt the appropriate terms for the words that make up a sentence and the role that they play, for example the difference between an indefinite and infinite article. This Type of knowledge will be useful when teaching a range of different abilities. That unit was useful with some impugnable questions. For example, the role of the word "across"" in the exampled sentence. Sometimes this word can be used as a preposition and an adverb as well I knew, or at least have heard of, all the parts of speech. This was a refresher course.

I would say that "Parts of speech unit "" is the most important one It was really helpful in refreshing my memory of parts of speech. It really provides great examples and covers all content in a simple understandable way . I have also learnt a few more things that I seemed to have forgotten since school. This unit focused on grammar. For many students grammar is a difficult subject, especially for foreign students. It is essential to have a solid understanding of the parts of speech in order to improve one's spoken and verbal expression. From this unit I learned many important teaching tools that can be utilized to instruct students of any age.
