The main thing I've learned here is how important the student-teacher relationship really is. In order to achieve good results, both sides should put in the needed amount of effort. The content that I was able to grasp through this unit was the good qualities that teachers need to have in order to have a smooth and good class environment. I learned that the focus is on the student learning and not the teacher teaching the class. I also learned that adult learners are typically self explanatory in regards to the terms on the lesson. There are essentially two things that I have learnt from unit 1. The first thing is about teachers. I learned several qualities that make a good teacher and the possibility of different roles he/she will have in a class. The most important thing about being a teacher is that he/she needs to be more attentive to the learning of students than to his/her teaching. The second thing, on the other hand, is about learners. I learned several characteristics that make a good learner and the different language levels that students are divided into. Different level students require different approach and pace of teaching. I also realised that there are actually distinct reasons why students take an English class. In conclusion, I learned that teachers and learners need to have a two-way communication in a class. Sometimes the teachers need to control and manage the class, other times they should let the students do the activity and gain lesson from it.

I feel that this unit has helped me in understanding the different types of students and learners in the classroom, and how to better deal with students on different levels. The unit has also provided useful information on a wide range of teaching techniques from being directly involved to a more observing nature. In review it also points out how a teacher's attitude can greatly effect the teaching atmosphere and the willingness of the student to learn. Providing a comfortable environment in which a student feels safe to ask questions and confident to explore their ability is paramount. This first unit has provided me with greater insight into the multi-faceted roles the teacher must assume to be an effective teacher, as well as the varied instances in which the astute teacher will assume the appropriate role. This unit also afforded me a more in-depth understanding about the levels of learners and their possible motivations. A teacher could not possibly successfully impart the concepts of a lesson if that teacher is not presenting materials at the students' appropriate language acquisition levels. It is quite apparent that the teacher must be ever aware, through frequent evaluation, of the students' levels of comprehension of the day's lesson(s) and activities.

She may take on many roles in the course of the class and is able to motivate and encourage her students to progress. A good learner is highly motivated and is willing to ask questions. He may be young or an adult and have specific challenges according to his level of learning.
I was greatly intrigued by this unit because although I have past experience in teaching, I never truly considered what it was that made a teacher successful besides a love for my students. I was surprised at just how many roles a teacher would need to take on as a class/course progressed. I have concluded that I have a lot to learn! I see that I will need to focus on certain aspects of my teaching skills in order to do the best I can for my students.

After studying unit 1, I learnt the characteristics of a good teacher, the role of the teacher, the characteristics of a good learner, the English language levels of a learner and the reasons why students may have decided to attend my English class. I believe having good rapport and interaction with the class is the most important quality of a good teacher. Students will have difficulty in understanding the instruction and the teacher will also have difficulty in teaching and communicating without good rapport and interaction with the students. I consider a desire to learn as the most important quality of a good learner. If the learners do not have the desire to learn, it is highly likely that they will lose motivation and distract other learners during the class.

Most of this unit was quite logical and intuitive. The information contained in this unit felt like common sense but perhaps having it listed and presented in a structured fashion will allow me to internalize these principles better. A bulk of the information I had not known prior was simply Jargon and industry standards such as the CEF. This unit covered what makes a good teacher and good student. Good teachers are fair and friendly and knowledgably while good students have a desire to learn and ask questions. There are big differences in teaching age levels including between adults and
young learners. What I learnt the most in this unit was: Characteristics of good teachers and good learners, roles of the teachers, the different language levels according to the framework of the
european Community and finally what motivates the students depending on their ages and levels.

I felt this unit was a good source of information to start the
tefl course. I now have a better understanding of all the potential roles a teacher can take in a classroom and I even related them to experiences I've had in the past with teachers I've had. I think it is also very important to understand the different levels of language proficiency so that when getting to know your students you can classify them that way and
work on improving their levels. This gives a good framework to work from and I am eager to learn from the following units.

This unit talks about the role of the teacher and the role of the students. There are certainly a lot of expectations on teachers. Especially since they are so underpaid in North America. The key take away for is that now we are moving from "teacher centred learning"" to ""student centred learning"". Teachers should keep students engaged by panning a variety of activities. A variety of factors affect the students learning. I believe age is the most important factor here as it affects motivation. It's no secret that teenagers are not motivated at all. In this case the teacher must resort to cunning and trickery. The text book does not say this. It's from personal experience."

Right from the start I identified with almost all the categories. My favorite is the prompter. I always like to encourage my students to carry on a conversation with me in English. Sometimes I think I may assess to much when I need to correct them. However, I'm always quick to

This unit helped me understand the different levels learning, I never realized that there were that many levels. But I like the break down. I always thought that there was just beginning, intermediate and then advanced. I also liked what was taught about how to be a good teacher, and what makes a good learner. By reading and understanding this unit, I have come to know some of the basic and elementary ups and downs of being and becoming a teacher, as well as some topics that, as a teacher I will need to accommodate myself with such as the interaction between teacher and student. This lesson comprised of the attributes of a good teacher, and a good student. A good teacher has many qualities including caring, an ability to motivate, good content knowledge and a love and passion for teaching and students. They function in many different roles during class and change in and out of roles fluently (while potentially performing multiple roles at one time). A good student is intrinsically motivated, is willing to ask questions and communicate creatively in the language, and is able to accept criticism.
Adult learners and
young learners require different teaching approaches. Adult learners would likely be more intrinsically motivated since they chose to take the class themselves. They also have more of a background in learning and language learning in particular so they may not need as much guidance in certain areas. They also would likely be more embarrassed, though, to talk in front of other people if they think they may get it wrong. Additionally, they may have a lot more ingrained bad habits and will want to learn in specific ways that they know
work for them. Young learners are more open to learning the language in new ways. They start with less background knowledge so they will need more guidance. However, they?re also more willing to experiment with the language with less fear of making mistakes.

Unit 1 introduced the common traits and roles that a teacher will possess and assume while in the classroom, as well as covered the various types of students one will come into contact with while teaching English abroad. The unit touched on various reasons why a student might be in an English class; from having their own desire to learn, to wanting to better their place in the workforce, or maybe because they are expected to be there because of family pressure. Students might or might not be motivated to learn - perhaps because of bad experiences in the past with schooling, or they might be nervous to make a mistake in front of others.
While some of the teacher/learner characteristics were not new to me, I was pleased to learn the classification scale of English language learners and how to, on a basic level, see where a student might fall on that scale.

I found it is very interesting to learn a foreign language when i was young. The first unit was about the topic of ?Teachers and Learners?. Here, I learnt about the traits of a good teacher, the different roles a teacher can have during a class as well as determining different language stages for a student. The process of learning is based on a mutual respectful relationship between teacher, and student. A good student is always eager to learn and never hesitates to ask the teacher if something is unclear. Unit one also discussed the different traits of students from different categories ? younger students need more motivation, while adult students need more prompting. Overall I feel that the information from the first unit was enriching, well structured and very educational.

I learned that even during the course of one lesson a teacher may be required to switch between different roles and understand how this role will affect the students. Additionally, I learned how many different levels of students there are. It will be important to understand what level my students are at and what their motivations are in order to structure the class so that it will both engage and teach them new material.

Through this unit, I learned what makes up a good teacher. Instead of thinking about teaching, the teacher should think about the students and how to motivate them. I also learned about the various roles that the teacher may have. For example, a teacher can be a manager where he/she effectively takes control of the class and activities. Usually, the teacher would be standing at the front of the classroom and doing various things such as explaining or reading. I found out what makes up a good learner and the differences between an adult learner and young learner. The language levels were also discussed in this unit. There are beginners, elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate, and advanced. I learned how much knowledge of the English language each level should have.

The first part of this unit comprised an overview of what it means to be a good teacher. Accordingly, it described the various roles of the teacher, offering a little information on what purposes each role serves and some of the risks to be avoided. For example, as a prompter, the teacher helps student to voice his/her thoughts and responses or to remember to speak in English, but must be careful not to take the initiative away from the student in so doing. The second part of the unit focused on students, describing the qualities of a good student that a teacher should try to build, then going into detail on the different characteristics and needs of differently-aged learners and on two systems one can use to classify learners' English abilities. Over the course of the unit, I learned the wide range of roles a teacher should fill in the classroom and was introduced to some of the duties a teacher has toward his/her students, such as encouraging them to ask questions, respecting the needs of their age group, and teaching according to the students' English abilities.

A basic review of the foundation of teaching. As I am currently
teaching in korea, the questions were relevant and necessary. The first unit redirected and sharpened my observations and analysis from the limited experiences i have as an amateur ESL teacher. I will be leaving this unit with an understanding that an effective language teaching depends largely on the teacher's ability to comprehend his/her roles and responsibilities as well as to adjust on various situations considering the background The unit was a great introduction into the different roles of a teacher. As a current teacher my most comfortable role is of the manager assessor or prompter. Reading over the lesson makes me want to try to be more of an organizer or facilitator. Another interesting topic clarified in the lesson was the level of the learner.

This unit was an introduction to the basic elements of teaching. While from my previous teaching experience, much of this was known to me, I did find the numerous roles of a teacher to be enlightening. My experience has been teaching astrophysics in a university setting, so many of the roles are not part of my experience, but looking at the roles of a teacher described, I believe that teaching English will require me to expand my ability to do things like plan lesson activities.

I learned that a good teacher should be a:
Manager- taking charge of the class and activities
Organizer- organize students to do various activities
Assessor- give feedback to students and evaluate them
Prompter- helping but not taking initiative away from students
Participants- participate as an equal to not dominate activities
Tutors- to encourage by giving guidance and support equally to all students
Facilitator- devise activities to allow students to learn for themselves
Model- to be a model such that students believe that the teacher is fount of all knowledge on English grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation
Monitor- to observe from a distance and make notes for corrections or praise at a later stage
There are many factors to consider when looking at learners of English such as: age, culture, language level and motivation for learning.
Age- Pre-puberty learners are more receptive to new sounds, words and grammar
Early teen learners are often unmotivated
Pre-schooler learners have shorter attention spans but generally enjoys activities that contains fun games, singing and drawing
Learning experience- adults learners have a fixed view of how teaching should be carried out whilst
young learners are more open minded
Motivation- adult learners are generally more motivated to attend class whist young learners lack motivation thus the teacher must encourage and help build motivation by making classes varied and interesting
Nervousness- adults are more nervous about a new learning experience than young learners because of factors such as success
Language awareness- adults tend to match new language to their native language whilst young learners absorb easily
Behaviour problems- adults have a greater attention span then younger learners
Life experience- adults have more life experience and can make the lessons more interesting
Culture and first language- different cultures have different approaches to learning.
There are different levels in the English language:
Beginners- have no knowledge to very basic knowledge
Elementary- can form basic sentence structures and communicate on simple topics
Low/pre-intermediate- able to communicate and understand variety of topics but lacking general fluency and depth of language awareness
Intermediate- can understand and communicate using limited vocabulary but still lacking in accuracy and fluency
Upper Intermediate- able to actively communicate using a greater range of language but still lacking in accuracy
Advanced- have a very good knowledge of English language

This unit was very helpful in identifying the different roles of a teacher within the classroom. It also laid out the best times to embody those roles and how to do it effectively. I enjoyed the amount of self reflection it required of me, and helped me define different strategies that I have used, and will use, in an educational role.

From the content of this unit "Teachers and Learners"" I have learnt how an effective teaching process should be structured. Now I could underline that good interaction with the class is the main key and central point for high effectiveness in teaching process. For one side of this structure I would place a 'good' teacher's characteristics and for another I learned that you must really be attentive to the needs of the students and build motivation. I also learned that a teacher needs to be aware of his/her position/role and match it accordingly to the students' level and needs I learned that you must really be attentive to the needs of the students. Teachers must also have the ability to build motivation as motivation is key! A very general awareness of different student needs at different schooling levels,is a great help in choosing levels at which one desires to teach as well as for ultimate career aspirations. I have learned the different approaches that a teacher makes to teach hisher students and to make sure there is a balance in the approaches to ensure that all students succeed. I believe to be a great teacher, one must effectively use all the approaches. The first unit was very informative for me personally. It was very useful to know what motivated students, what kind of English level they can have and what is the best approach for it. It was also good to know what makes a good teacher.

It can open the doors to imagination and excitement. The material is well structured. Thank you very much. The unit effectively introduced the role of the teacher and the student. It discussed the differences in a good teacher and a bad teacher. The unit also addressed things that could affect the student?s ability to learn and communicate in English. Language levels were broken down into six levels and each level was appropriately described. It was interesting to note the delineation of the stages between learned, and what are considered to be the most important teaching skills.

working with 2nd and 3rd graders is sometimes very chaotic and it is helpful to remember that a teacher has many different roles. Also information on what makes a good student. While I have experience teaching young students, I think that adults would be more motivated as this unit states. Also I enjoyed having a clear definition of the levels of ESL. These definitions can be very helpful for placing students in a class.

In this unit, I have learned that there must be a great a deal of compassion for all students when teaching them the English language and that the classroom must be a comfortable environment to encourage learning. I believe that Unit 1 is very much important and educative because as Teachers, we should be able to understand our responsibilities as it relate to dealing with students, the way students are to behave will determine as to weather they are good learners or they need motivation, care, extra tutoring, etc. I learned that there are fitting groups/classifications for teaching and learning in the classroom which can present benefits and challenges to providing an educational, interesting, fun, and rewarding class/session.

Unit 1 is mainly about teachers and learners.
Starting with Teachers & what makes a good teacher;
A good teacher should really love teaching, be kind and patient, motivates student, mentain agood rapport in addition to being lively and entertaining
Different roles of a teacher:
Prompter - The teacher encourages the students' to give further information by asking a follow up question.
Facilitator - The teacher sets up an activity to allow the students to practice language use, themselves.
Manager - The teacher takes control of a class or activity.
Model- The teacher provides a correct example of English language pronunciation.
Assessor- The teacher gives feedback and correction in addition to evaluation.
Organizer- The teacher organizes students into various activities, set them into pairs and mentain descipline
Participant- The teacher participates in topics as an equal to students, without being too dominant
Tutor- Tutoring implies a more personal role of a teacher
Monitor- Teacher monitors what is going on in the class room to find out how the activities have been useful
Shifting into learners, the following points make a good learner:
A good learner should have the ability to listen, learn, ask questions, contribute in the class and experiment the language
Age as an attribute in the learning process contribute as follows:
*Post Puberty (above 13 years old): most difficult as they are usually unmotivated and unwilling to experiment language
*Pre Puberty (from 8 years old to 12 years old) They are more receptive to new languages and sounds
Very
young learners (7 years or less): They usually have short attention spans, however they can be attracted by fun games.
Learning English Stages:
Beginner- The student's knowledge of English ranges from zero to very basic.
Elementary- The student can communicate basic topics and form simple sentences.
Pre Intermediate- able to understand and communicate a variety of topics, but lacks fluency and depth of language awareness, also tends to have some basic errors
Intermediate- The student lacks general fluency but is able to understand and communicate a variety of topics.
Upper-Intermediate- The student still lacks some accuracy but is able to discuss a very wide range of topics.
Advanced -The student has a very good knowledge of both grammar and vocabulary, and is now studying more subtle parts of speech",
I feel I have learned a good starter base to teaching ESL from this unit.It emphasized to me what I have always believed that a good teacher should love to teach. If you really love and enjoy teaching then in my opinion you can motivate and encourage students to be the same.It also helped me to organise in my mind the importance of your role as a teacher and the role of students.I feel that students who have a desire to learn will be much easier to teach.That said when teaching ESL you have to be aware of the various different abilities and make sure students fully understand the basic simple tasks

This unit has enlighten me on what makes a good teacher and a good learner.
A good teacher does not only concentrate on lesson delivery but performs the following roles as well, the manager or controller of the class ensuring that their control inspires the students. A good teacher also organizes the student to do various activities as one of the most important roles to avoid chaos situations in the class. A good teacher equally seeks to be the assessor, prompter, participant, tutor, facilitator, model and a monitor of the class in order to produce good learners. A good teacher trying to produce a good learner, he/she must be aware of what makes a good learner. Finally, I learnt that, adult learners are often more nervous than young learner about new learning experience hence the teacher must be gentle and encouraging whiles helping build confidence.

As teachers, we must be aware of the various roles we play in the classroom and consider all of the factors that influence student motivation, behavior and learning. This unit gave a good overview and description of a good teacher and a good learner. It provided an interesting perspective of the different roles of a teacher and the different levels of learners. This unit provided a good foundation for the course.

Whilst studying the first unit of this course i learnt about students and their different levels of learning and that each of the levels have different characteristics, also that the age difference splits them into two groups: the adult learner and the young learner. I learned how to match language skills to the correct language level. It is true that we are using the grammar perfectly in a natural way but we are unaware of what we are actually using and why we are using it. Parts of Speech is an introduction to grammar, focussing in the role that each word plays in the sentence and how it can be classified grammatically. A very detailed breakdown of the most common areas of teaching.

This section was extremely informative. The break down of the grammar in a short list with examples will help me further when teaching grammar rules. I'd like to point out the part about the order of adjectives. I know this list is longer but it's important to teach this short list to younger students. This unit familiarizes us with English grammar, parts of speech more precisely. Briefly, all necessary parts of speech were considered, beginning from noun and ending with prepositions and conjunctions.
Each part of speech was examined separately, giving huge variety of examples and ideas about teaching it to learners.
Moreover, the main types of each part of speech were presented and clearly explained.
In spite of general information regarding parts of speech, this unit enlightened me with a clear vision of difference between parts of speech, whether it is countable or uncountable nouns, comparative or superlative adjective, definite or indefinite articles, etc.
Mostly, this unit helped me to consolidate English grammar, that had previously been learning for ages, in tiny details, to realize and assimilate the differences between parts of speech and their usage.

I am rapidly becoming aware at just how confusing the English language is to learn. With its pages of irregular verbs and multiple exceptions to almost every rule, it makes me glad I absorbed it as a child and have not had to try start with zero assumed knowledge. It is interesting to see how English has evolved over time to contain so many rules, I was unaware that Gerunds existed as a concept. This module has been useful for learning and memorizing these rules.

This unit was a great overview on the different parts of a sentence; from simple structure sentences to complex sentences. Knowing how each word
works in a sentence is important for a teacher so they can relay the information to a student effectively and simply; since the student is just learning the language. Much of the grammar in this unit is material that is natural to native English speakers simply by practice and exposure. It is important to remember that those who are learning and practicing English later in life will not know what "sounds right Unit two is a concise grammar review. I had remembered the difference between nouns, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, and conjunctions; however, I had forgotten some specifics, such as the subcategories of preposition and what "auxillery verbs"" and ""superlative adjective"" meant. This unit also refreshed my memory about transitive and intransitive verbs."

I knew, or at least have heard of, all the parts of speech. This was a useful refresher course. I think that it touched on the basics of Parts of Speech as I did some additional research on the web and found that Parts of Speech is a rather in depth subject. Still, for the purpose of teaching english as a foreign language it serves its purpose.

I guess this unit is very useful for "teachers"" who know just a little about English language structure. Reviewing, practicing and teaching parts of speech is imperative to teaching any language. As a native speaker, I tend not to identify the specifics in our sentences, I just use the correct sentence structure. I see spending more time reviewing each part of speech independently and practicing grammar books in the coming weeks and months. There are five main types of nouns: common (ie. person, chair), proper (ie. America, Mars), compound (ie. bookshelf, sunshine), abstract (ie. liberty, freedom), and collective (ie. herd, pride). There are countable (ie. dog) and uncountable nouns (ie. music).
Words that are used instead of or in place of more precise nouns or noun phrases are called pronouns. There are four types of pronouns: personal (ie. I, me, you, she, he, it, we), possessive (ie.
Mine, yours, his, hers, theirs), reflexive (myself, yourself), and relative (who, which, whose). It is important to remember that possessive pronouns replace nouns. This can be very confusing with possessive adjectives that describe nouns. Examples of possessive adjectives are: my, your, our, its, their, his and her. I find that 'his' can be the most confusing to determine if it is a possessive pronoun or a possessive adjective. I often try to replace it with another possessive pronoun or possessive adjective to see which fits better, if I am stuck.
There are three articles. 'A' and 'an' are indefinite articles and are used only with singular nouns when the noun is general. 'The' is a definite article and used
Before singular and plural nouns when the noun is specific. There is also the zero article that is used for general ideas about countable nouns (ie. Apples are red.).
A verb can be an action or a state. Transitive verbs are verbs that are followed directly by an object. Intransitive verbs are verbs that cannot be followed directly by an object. The infinitive of a verb is formed by preceding the base form with 'to' (ie. to go). There are four main forms of verbs: base form, past simple, past participle and present participle. Regular verbs' past simple and past participle end in -ed. The word 'stop' is the base form. 'Stopped' is the past simple and past participle. 'Stopping' is the present participle. Irregular verbs' past simple and past participle do not end in -ed. An example of an irregular verb is 'go' (the base form). 'Went' is the past simple, 'gone' is the past participle, and 'going' is the present participle. Auxiliary verbs are helping verbs. These are: do, have and be. Adverbs add information to the verb. There are five main types of adverbs: manner (ie. slowly, quickly), place (ie. here, there), time (ie. now, soon),
degree (very, really), and frequency (once, always). When using multiple adverbs in a sentence, it is helpful to remember this sequence: place, manner, time.
Adjectives are used to describe nouns. When using more than one adjective in a sentence, it is helpful to remember this sequence: size, age, color, material, noun. There are comparative adjectives and superlative adjectives. Comparative adjectives compare two people or things, while superlative adjectives compare three or more people or things.
A gerund is the -ing form of a verb that is used as a noun. It is used as a subject or an object. An example of a gerund is 'reading': "I enjoy reading"".

I am grateful for the opportunity to review the parts of speech. The English language is part of my daily spoken life and I have not thought of it
as a grammer lesson in many years. I wanted to take this class to enhance my mind and possibly help another learn English when I live abroad. This unit has stretched my mind and caused me to revisit things I have forgotten. I find myself thinking about the 8 parts of speech and how words are used in a sentence.
1. Nouns are wonderful because they are names of things, animals, people, places, qualities and states. I seem to recognize them in sentences the best in a sentence.
2. Adjectives describe people and things.They describe the nouns to help the listener or reader have a better clarity or vision of the noun.
3. Verbs are doing words either by a form of being or by physical or mental action. Verbs are the necessary part of the sentence. They are used with the subject to form the sentence.
4. Articles are divided into definite (the) and indefinite (a, an). They help you to know whether the nouns are referring to something particular or more general.
5. Adverbs answer questions where, when, how often and why. They add meaning or information to the verb or another adverb. There are 5 types manner, place, time,
degree, and frequency.
6. Conjunctions join words or groups of words together. Tiny words and, but,or, nor, for, so and yet are used to join words and phrases to make sentences. Prepositions show the relationship between a noun or a pronoun and some other word in the sentence. A few examples : as, at, but, by, down, for, into, of, out, and near.
7. Pronouns are words used in place of a more precise noun. They help writers and speakers not to repetitively use a noun. Prounouns are I, you, he, she, it, we or they.

In my entire educational career, I have never been required to diagram a sentence beyond the basic: noun, verb, adjective, adverb. Since I teach composition and not developmental writing, this hasn't been a teaching issue, but definitely a personal lack/fear. This lesson helped me to feel more capable, reminded me that I knew more about grammar than I realized (terms), and that I am capable of learning more. And, oddly enough. this was fun.
