After reading this unit i feel that i have learned quite a lot about teachers and students. For example, I now know that there are several different roles a teacher may take on in the classroom and each of those roles serves a purpose depending on the activity and the students in the classroom. I also learned that there are quite a few differences between teaching adults and
young learners. This knowledge will better prepare my future in teaching by providing me with the insight on different students. I also enjoyed learning about the different levels of language. Having taught ESL in China for a year, I can see all of the teacher jobs at
work as well as the learner levels. I was able to take on all of these roles throughout the course of the year, but I can definitely see how overuse of some of these roles negatively affects the classroom. Additionally, with the learner levels, I can see how the learner level affects the motivation of students that I taught. It was fairly difficult to get students in the 14-18 year age range to care at all about what I was teaching. Students definitely had a lack of motivation, which I would put mainly on peer pressure and their desire to look ?cool? to fellow students, who also did not care about the lessons and learning a new language. I would say that from experience, the best thing that a teacher can do to build trust and help to motivate students is to genuinely care and begin to build up a relationship with students. Learning their names, learning things about them, and learning what they care about can help to build rapport but also help to establish trust and students will generally listen and the roles of the teacher become easier, and the negative behaviors that they generally display seem to diminish and the classroom becomes more involved. I enjoyed learning names of the different jobs of a teacher, and will keep the age levels as well as language levels in mind as I continue to teach English.

I learned the importance of knowing which role to fill as a teacher (assessor, facilitator, prompter, etc) and when to fill it.
However, the material I found most informative was regarding the need to tailor my lessons and teaching style to my audience. Adult learners and
young learners require different approaches. Adult learners will have more life experiences than young learners - this can help to provide more discussion material drawn from the adult learner's past experiences. Adult learners will also have past learning experiences which will affect the way they approach this learning experience, while young learners will have fewer.
Young learners often have less experience in their native language - this can be an advantage (over adult learners) as it allows the young students to learn the new language in much the same way they learn their native language. They will approach it experientially rather than trying to compare it to their native language like an adult learner.
Young learners will have much shorter attention spans and will require more interactive and creative activities to keep them engaged and interested.
Young learners, who might be in class only because their parents require it, often are less motivated than adult learners who are in class by their own choice.",

In this unit, I found that the broken down aspects of teaching and learning were helpful. This is because in the multifaceted approach to teaching, there are many teaching styles and many learning styles. I really enjoyed the part about learners, and how adult and youth learners vary. I have taught 2nd and 11th grade in the U.S., and I noticed some of these differences just in the jump from Elementry to High school. I was a public achievement coach, so the idea of more "student centered lessons"" is very appealing."

The lesson covered the characteristics of good teachers and the different roles the teacher will play during the course of a given class. The lesson also related characteristics of good learners. It spoke of how age/maturity of the student effects motivation for learning. There was an explanation of the different levels of English learners from beginning to advanced. (These are similar to the ones I've used in my classes in the US.) The teacher should have the ability to listen and tailor lessons to fit the needs of all the students. The teacher should know when to lecture and when to promote discussion. All in all the teacher is there to motivate and encourage learning.

I found Unit One - Teachers and Learners, to be very helpful. It broke down all the aspects of teaching and learning in a way that made it clear, easy to understand and, I believe, a great foundation to use in any teaching situation. Learning the rolls of the teacher was particularly helpful to me, showing me the different ways in which teaching can be handled. That teaching does not always have to be the teacher talking at the front, but there can be a whole number of different approaches.

This unit overall was concerned with teachers and learners. Beginning with teachers, there was a 9 part summary of what makes a 'good' teacher. The good teacher should be very concerned with their overall character in teaching, the first four qualities, and perhaps even more concerned with the learning of his or her students, the last five qualities. Next, the lesson described the various roles the teacher might fulfill within a lesson along with helpful tips for the teacher when adopting certain roles. For example, the prompter role advice was that the teacher should be encouraging without spoon-feeding. That is, the teacher should give encouragement but not take the initiative in response away from the student; after all, the student must be the one to learn. The lesson then turned to learners, discussing a variety of qualities of a good learner such as willingness to accept correction, asking questions, and a desire to learn. I feel that I have learned some basic concepts that I need to keep in mind while teaching
kids. Some of these range from attributes and characteristics that I should strive and
work for, while others are ways to help identify the level of the student's knowledge of English, which will in turn help me from making basic mistakes like talking over their heads and ultimately not helping them learn. Another important thing that I learned was to understand that a student's motivation so that I will be better able to reach them and help them.

This unit was an introduction to the practice of teaching and learning English as an additional language. As such it provided an overview of the role of the teacher, the qualities required to be a good learner and the relationship between the teacher and learner. Although there are many qualities the teacher should have and many roles that they should undertake, the general principle guiding their
work is to adopt a student centered approach, one that will take into consideration individual students learning needs and focus upon designing learning activities which enable the learner to advance according to their needs and through taking responsibility for the learning. These activities should encourage students to work collaboratively, whilst also allowing them to take risks and experiment with their developing understanding of English.
It is also important to understand the age and cultural background of students since they will bring a variety of learning experiences and ideas of what teaching and learning should entail. The age of these students is important when designing activities that would engage them. Central to these considerations is to accurately assess the level of language competence that the students bring to the class, this information will determine the subject matter to be taught and also the way in which it is taught.
Finally, lessons should be engaging and enjoyable, if learning becomes enjoyable and the collaborative atmosphere in the classroom is inclusive, learners will feel comfortable with taking risks and asking questions. This may be accomplished by taking all questions seriously and involving everyone in the class with the task of answering them as a group.

I didn't know the different roles that a teacher could have and how he could switch from one to another very quickly during a class lesson. I feel like i already had a good understanding of the role of a teacher, but this unit clarified and defined both the role of a good student and a good teacher in the classroom. I learned how to recognize the differences between a attentive learner and unmotivated learner. I don't think i would have problems with cultural differences because i am aware of the disturbance it could bring, however i was unaware that teaching errors could lead to an disorganized class. For example, not being respected by students or/and making them feel nervous.

From this unit I learnt that the relationship between teachers and learns are very important. I believe that a good teacher will have good students.
I think there are three most important roles of a teacher:
-Manager: the teacher would normally be standing at the front of the class giving explanations, instructions or reading aloud so the students will think of their own, and they will gain a lot of knowledge by learning from their teacher in this role.
-Prompter: this will help the students to built confidence when they meet problems.

This unit gave a good overview of the different parts of speech that make up the English language (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, articles, gerunds, pronouns, infinitives and conjunctions). The parts of speech were defined and example sentences were used to show the sentence structure. This unit will be very useful in teaching students the English language. This Second Unit was about some basic grammar that a teacher of English must know. In order to give learners of English all the necessary tools to them understand how correctly use different words. I learnt about subject, object, verbs, prepositions, etc. It was great to remember some things that I forgot with the time! After many years of speaking we tend to forget why we speak in certain sentence structures. This unit helps me to remember grammar point that are long time forgotten, and also explains in a easy way, that students can understand and use to improve their language skills properly and efficiently. Especially use it in their daily life.

This unit was great - as I don't know any other languages other than English, it was great to learn how sentence structure informs almost everything, and how words actually
work with one another. Usually you don't pay any attention to this as you just do it automatically. Learning about adjectives was quite simple, but learning about the indefinite articles and definite articles was a bit more challenging.

I thought this unit was valuable review on English grammar. I
Haven't gone over many of these concepts in almost a decade, but as a native English speaker, these concepts came back very quickly. This also served as a good reminder to the incredible complexity of English. As a linguistic medley, with influences from Germanic, Celtic, and Romance languages, English borrows grammatical structures and vocabulary from many different sources, creating a irregular and incredibly complicated language, which can be very difficult for non-native speakers to pick up on.

When I first started teaching English as a foreign language, I quickly learned that knowing English and knowing how to teach English are two very different things. Most of my English ability I acquired, rather than learned. This is why reviewing basic grammar is important. I need to know that the object is described as ?a small, old, blue, plastic table,? with the adjectives in that order, not just because it sounds right, but also because there is a specific rule: describe size first, then age, color, and material.

it is hard to gauge what I have learnt as I take grammar for granted whilst writing and speaking. It has taught me, or reminded me, how intrinsic the English language is. The unit has given me insight as to what a student has to consider when structuring a sentence and how I can aid them into forming a sentence.

This unit contains all the information about English grammar and parts of speech. I learned more about the categories of nouns, pronouns, and verbs than I had remembered from my lessons in elementary and high school. In addition, I learned specific definitions of gerunds and articles that I did not know. Because of some of the irregularities in English grammar, it may be more difficult to teach to non-English speakers.

This unit taught parts of speech and examples of them. The sections taught were nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, gerunds, articles and conjunctions. It also gave some common problems English learners run into when learning these parts of speech.
From this unit I learned about aspects of grammar that I use in everyday speech but do not think about. It gave me perspective of how difficult and complex the English language is because of the many exceptions to rules. I also took note of the sections that English students find difficult so I can try to make these sections more clear when I teach.

I found this unit very informative for teaching my students because it gave concrete examples of how we use different parts of speech. Particularly the sections about conjunctions and prepositions. I think these words end up being the hardest for students trying to learn English because they have specific uses that can be confusing to non-native speakers. I also believe that having the specific names for parts of speech will really help my students learn the information more accurately.

English grammar will likely have to be taught at some point in a
tesol career. This unit covered the basic principles of parts of speech (verb, noun, pronoun, adverbs, adjectives, etc) and broke them down simply - also covering irregular verbs and their past simple and past participle conjugations. Starting from a simple basic sentence and moving into more complexities using personal pronouns, etc. This unit is a foundation of grammar for more units to come.
