This unit focused on the teacher and what makes a good teacher, and the learner and what makes a good learner. It was very helpful to break down the roles of a teacher and see both the positive and negative sides to all the different techniques. It is important that a teacher is kind, patient, a motivator, can correct without offending, loves what they do, knows what they're teaching, and is lively and exciting. All of these qualities help build good relationships with students. A good teacher will know the balance of when they are managing or controlling the class too much and be able to step back and monitor and facilitate more so they can allow students to grow on their own as well see how well they are taking in the material they are being taught. Teachers also need to be able to participate with the students, which will help to motivate and bring learning to life a little more, but also be able to tutor and meet the students wherever they are and help them move forward when they are stuck. There is a necessary balance of knowing how much to prompt a student when they are stuck, but that is also another moment of observing where a student is. A teacher needs to be able to pour out, but then also step back and let the material sink in and watch how it is being absorbed.
Learning about the learner is so helpful in many aspects. It is so important to note the age of the learners as well as the level they are at.
young learners are going to be more like sponges, if they are motivated, and will be more receptive to activities and games. Adult learners are going to want to know more of the why behind the what and the reasonings. They are also more relatable to because of more experience both in learning and in living. Understanding the levels within the ages is crucial. Beginners have to start at the very beginning with the absolute basics. Elementary know a little bit and is when sentence structure and grammar would be taught. A Pre-intermediate can say quite a bit, but lack awareness of the language and fluency, and still need help with structure. An intermediate learner can communicate a lot but lacks accuracy and fluency. An Upper intermediate student is lacking accuracy, but can communicate just about everything. An advanced learner is hitting the more subtle understandings of a language. It is so important to assess where a student is and not start them above their level or else they will be frustrated and not improve because of missing important building blocks. At the same time if a student is started at too low of a level they will become bored and not be challanged. It's so important to be able to recognize what a good learner is so as to encourage good learning techniques and develop others. Asking questions is so important to learning so it's necessary to provide an atmosphere where students are free to do so without feeling afraid, and many times they need to learn how to ask questions. It's important that a teacher provide a safe atmosphere for students to be able to experiment with the language and to encourage that in students. To understand a good learner wants to learn is important because they will really struggle learning if they don't want to, and may just need motivation.
This unit was very enjoyable and helpful to think about how to help students grow as learners which I believe is so key as a teacher!

With each class and each student as well as teacher being different, we must learn to use what we know to adapt to each situation. What I took away from this unit is that we, as teachers, must apply ourselves differently to our students whether they are young or adults and beginner or advanced learners. There isn't one absolute way of teaching but rather a conjunction of a variety of teaching methods that we use to ensure our students get the most out of their time with us in class.

A main takeaway of this unit was to be as understanding of your students as possible, and not to micromanage. Unit one provided a basic overview of both the teaching and learning roles. Many topics were covered ranging from, how to assess and subsequently categorise a learners current English level, to the difference between adult and younger learners. Basically unit one provided a study of how the relationship between teacher and student is an important and complicated topic. The teacher must build a relationship with the student and a happy student will consequently mean a successful one.
To become a successful teacher you must be motivated, caring, patient and enthusiastic. Students will become uninterested and distracted if a teacher acts as a manager/controller 90% of the lesson. Therefore, a teacher must keep their students engaged throughout the lesson using a variety of different teaching techniques. To be a successful learner you must be motivated, ask questions and just generally have a desire to learn.

I have understood what it takes to be a good teacher and facilitator to students of all proficiency groups, and to provide proper care and attention for specific groups of students. Also, I understand that the pace in which students progress can vary vastly and that we should help each and every one of the students progress at their ability to learn a new language. Lessons should be entertaining and should include the students in the activities given to them. A good way would be to inculcate the english language into their daily lives and routines for the language to set and be a norm. The students should also practice amongst themselves to create more productive learning when the teacher is unavailable. And lastly, we, as potential teachers, show also learn about the culture differences we share, and how to adapt to their culture, to promote the best learning environment possible.

I learned about adverbs, intransitive verbs, transitive verbs and so forth. I learned about proper pronouns, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs and transitive verbs. I really enjoyed this chapter. It was a really great refresher on the basics of the English language. More often than not, we know how a sentence is suppose to sound, but not necessarily why. The mecahincs of the sentence is sometimes the hardest to understand and teach. I personally think the contents were easy and straight forward. It isn't as complicated to understand as it was in highschool . I learned a more efficient way to explain the parts of speech to my students. The explanations and rules given were easy to understand and gave me ideas on how I can explain.

This section highlights to me how complicated English grammar can be, and therefore how difficult to grasp for those trying to learn English. Frankly some of the rules seem to be different from the rules i learned at school which implies there are different ways of quantifying parts of speech. I therefore see the need to prepare especislly well for lessons on grammar and regularly consult a good grammar book. It also seems evident that one does not need to be too dogmatic about rules on grammar. If one makes a mistake and a student points the mistake out, then there is no harm in admitting the mistake and being willing to learn from the students
