This unit is about what makes a good teacher in a students mind, and what makes a good learner in a teachers mind. It describes the different roles that a teacher can employ to keep students motivated and more involved with their own learning. As well as moving further away from a lecture based approach. I learned about the different reasons for motivation in a student, and that adult students are likely to be more self-motivated than younger students, as well as learning that a motivated student is much more likely to succeed. I learned the importance of keeping in mind the students' culture and the way in which the are used to being taught, as well as the fact that each linguistic group is likely to have different problems in their learning.
I also learned the importance of being able to change the role you are using as a teacher many times during a single lesson, and to motivate the students and keep the students engaged by switching between them. I also learned how to identify different learners and to place the students learning above all else. Adult learners are more set in their ideas about learning and teaching, and are often likely to be more shy about participation and making mistakes as they want to avoid losing face, where as
young learners are more enthusiastic and open minded, but have more problems regarding class behaviour and paying attention.

First of all I had learned from this unit many things which were absolutely important to me. I have learned in Unit 1 that to be a good teacher and to be a good student. Communication is the most effective way on both side. In this unit I have learned numerous of things specially how important the relationship between a teacher and a learner is. The teacher should always motivate the students and keep all lessons interesting thus to keep the students interested in learning more about the language. It is very important to be fair towards all students and correct them in a manner which is helpful and not offending towards the student. It is most likely that students will keep attending your classes if you are caring and sensitive towards them. I think the main goal for a teacher should just be keeping the students motivated throughout every lesson as motivated learners are more likely to succeed. The roles that the teacher should play in certain situations are also very important, a teacher should know which role to use during which activities. A good teacher should be aware of the different cultures of her students and understand that each culture has a different way of learning and taking in knowledge that is givin to them. Most importantly in this case is that a teacher should encourage a student and help build their confidence in a gentle manner.

Unit one's content is about establishing the difference between a good teacher and a bad teacher, but more so, it's about an understanding of the different learning experiences of all students from all age groups and language levels.
The way the unit is presented made me think more about why I wanted to become a teacher and taught me that the experiences I might have as a teacher will be largely down to my ability to inspire students from all language levels, ages, and backgrounds to take an active interest in learning the English language.

This unit discussed many topics, the main topic beings being teachers and students. On the teacher portion, the roles of the teacher were explained in detail. There are many roles a teacher can act in at any given time and even don more than one role at once if need be. The main roles that a teacher needs to be aware of and act in are manager, assessor, motivator or promoter, monitor, participant, and organizer among others. The unit also contained a section about the relationships between teacher and student relationships and what qualities make a good teacher and a good learner. In the student portion, the levels of the students in regards to language knowledge was explained in great detail all the way from beginner to advanced level. I learned a great deal about the roles that a teacher must be aware of and when I should don a specific role in the different portions of a class. I also learned the levels of language that students are categorized upon, as well as the differences between younger and older students, which having experience being one also helps the process of learning from the unit.

What I felt was the most important part of this unit is the teacher's handling of different students. The way students are, can be influenced by age, culture, life experience and their language level. It is very easy sometimes to forget about this. A good teacher is someone who loves teaching and cares about the knowledge acquisition of their students. A good teacher is someone who balances lecturing the class with involving the students in the lesson. Teachers should be able to play all of the roles expected of them depending on the needs of their students. These roles can include monitor, organizer, model, tutor, and prompter. A good student on the other hand is someone who asks questions, participates in class, and practices what they learn in order to fully grasp the subject material.
Teachers should be able to take into account the types of students they have and plan their lessons accordingly. There is a difference between
young learners and adults. Young learners can pick up the language easier and tend to have more energy in class which can be generated into enthusiasm for the course material. Adult learners can be more motivated because they chose to take the class and they can bring a lot of life experience to the class.

There are many personal qualities that a teacher should possess such as being kind and patient, being lively and encouraging in order to help motivate students to learn and have a passion themselves for teaching. I have learned the responsibilities for both the teacher and the learner. As a former teacher I was reminded of the skills needed to be an effective teacher. I was a very effective instructor when I taught at the college level and plan to continue these same skills when teaching
tefl. Unit 1 went over the requirements of being a good teacher, as well as a learner. I have learnt the more important roles of being a teacher and how to recognize the different English skill levels of the students. From this unit I feel that a lot of things were simply reiterated that I was already familiar with. I did learn, however, a few more specified roles that the teacher plays in the classroom. This unit discusses the different roles of a teacher and when each role should be implemented, the qualities a good teacher should have and which aspects make up a good learner. This unit also details the varying qualities each age group will likely bring to the classroom and the contrasting behaviors in students from other countries. I enjoyed learning in more detail the relation between a teacher and student and how a teacher must change their approach to teaching for each situation. I hadn't realized the diverse teaching styles a teacher would have to adapt to for individual age groups. I appreciate the detail this unit gives in breaking down what it takes to be a good teacher because it has given me a stable foundation on which qualities I should focus on in becoming a successful teacher.

I was interested about the differences between young and adult learners. It is so much easier for a teacher to be forgiven their mistakes by a young learner but only a minor mistake with an adult and you could lose your credibility and respect. For me personally it would be terrifying to stand in front of a group of advanced adult learners. I hope this course will build up my confidence but for now I think I'd prefer to teach
young learners.
Good teacher needs to love teaching. If you do what you love in all aspects of life you'll most likely succeed. If the teacher is motivated so are her students. Good teacher also needs to put in a bit of personality. Being real attracts people and as a teacher it is very important to be easily approachable.
I really enjoyed this first unit and I'm highly motivated to continue.

I learned the different roles that a teacher plays while on the
job. I find it interesting because I believe that a majority of teachers have to fill multiple roles every lesson to keep their students motivated and engaged in the lesson. I have learned that I would rather teach younger students that older students, no because I am unsure of my own ability but because I feel that younger students could benefit from my personal style better that the older students who have a set view of how classroom interaction is supposed to go.

There are many different facets to teaching and depending on the area, culture and age of students, it requires a gentle hand.
Breaking the students down into the categories of Beginner to Advanced helped me evaluate for my self, the level I would like to teach at. Teaching can be fun and easy if the entire class is motivated and willing to learn, which can also lead to mistakes, but I feel that mistakes are one of the corner stones of learning.

This unit was useful because it highlighted the keys to being a successful and inspiring teacher. As a student who has learned from all types of teachers, from the outstanding to the demeaning, I found it extremely useful to study what it is that makes a great teacher great, and to study qualities that I can aspire to bring to my classroom every day. Every student has individual needs when it comes to learning and understanding and it is important for the teacher to observe these needs in order to provide the knowledge and motivation needed to make their learning experience a proficient and encouraging experience.
I as the teacher am responsible to provide the most affective, welcoming and encouraging environment for students to learn and gain maximum exposure to a proficient english tongue, where they can learn and thrive to the maximum of their ability.

I?ve learnt the elements of being a good teacher, the roles of a teacher, how to motivate students, what makes a good learner, students? language level, etc. It sounds easy but when you really do all these in class, it might not as easy as you think. I had some experiences on handling different language level of students. Some are in higher ability and some are only a beginner. They are all in one class. It is quiet hard to motivate all of them at the same time as some of them felt bored in class due to their high ability. As a teacher, we should never forget the basic things because the basic is always the most important and the fundamental for all students.

Unit 1 focuses on the different characteristics and roles demonstrated by teachers and learners. I learned there are numerous aspects which help create an effective teacher, and while it is necessary for a teacher to really care about teaching, it is even more important to care about the students' learning. I also learned of the various roles a teacher can play in the classroom, and that it is important to be able to transition between these roles based on the activity and desired outcome. The characteristics of learners are vast and vary by age, culture, experience, and motivation. Students of different age and experience will receive information differently and carry different motivations. For example: Adults will have made the decision to learn a second language, whereas it may be required by a parent for a young learner. Adults may have fixed expectations or be nervous of new learning, while
young learners are typically more open-minded to new learning ideas. For young learners, their reception of information, motivations, and behaviors change constantly as they age and develop. It is the teacher's responsibility to consider the characteristics of every student, and encourage and help develop the attributes necessary of a good learner.
The unit also covers the different language levels from Beginner to Advanced, and the characteristics associated with each level. Also, there is an outline of the Common
european Framework for Language Levels.

Unit 1 taught me a multitude of qualities and roles that both teacher and learner utilize in the classroom. It is important to learn the qualities that make a good teacher because I am training to be one and should take inventory of these qualities such as patience, ability to motivate, knowledge of student weakness, and love of teaching. These are necessary to run an effective classroom and reach every student. The qualities of a good learner are equally important as a teacher needs to be able to spot them and act accordingly with each student. The roles of both parties in the classroom are also important in helping establish effective lesson plans depending on what the students will be learning each day. Whether a manager is needed or a participant, a prompter or tutor, a good teacher needs to know when each is appropriate. Finally, Unit 1 gave an overview of the language levels from beginner to advanced. A good teacher needs to know which level a student falls under so he/she can tailor a lesson to effectively reach them based on their current skills and knowledge. Remembering and utilizing the lessons from Unit 1 will help build a strong foundation for myself as a future teacher.

There are different roles of a teacher including the manager/ controller, organiser, assessor, prompter, participant, tutor, resource/ facilitator, model and observer/ monitor. Then role that a teacher plays is dependent on the
Type of activity and outcomes we want from our students. The role of the teacher can vary during a single lesson. A good teacher knows which role is appropriate at any given time.
Characteristics of a good learner include; the willingness to listen, desire to experiment, willingness to ask questions, ability to self assess, ability to accept correction and a desire to learn.
There are differences between young and adult learners in learning experiences, motivations. nervousness, language awareness, behavioural problems, life experiences, culture and first language.
There are also distinctions in language level including Beginners, Elementary, Low/pre-intermediate, Intermediate, Upper intermediate and Advanced.
There are five main reasons while students will want to learn english. Such reason are; for future career prospects, travel, grades, desire to study and live in english speaking country, communication and out of interest.

This unit has helped me to understand how important it is for a teacher to develop trust and respect between themselves and their students. A good learner should have the desire to learn, listen and experiment with the language and accept corrections when wrong. Intrinsic motivation is very important for learners to successfully grasp the language. Adults can often be affected by past learning experiences, whether good or bad, and may be nervous due to their pronunciation, the teacher should gently encourage the class and motivate them to speak and practice the language without fear of making mistakes. The ability to speak English is broken down into the following levels; beginners, elementary, low/per-intermediate, intermediate, upper-intermediate, advanced. The Council of Europe recognizes 6 different levels:
Breakthrough, basic user-A1
Waystage, basic useer-A2
Threshold, independent user-B1
Vantage, independent user-B2
Effective operational proficiency, proficient user-C1
Mastery, proficient user-C2
Teachers often have their preferences regarding which level to teach, at lower levels, students often have difficulty communicating in English and the teaching material used is mainly visual. Intermediate levels can usually communicate on a wide range of topics and are motivated, however mistakes learned can be difficult to correct at this level. Higher level students already know a lot of English and sometimes their learning may plateau at this stage, therefore it is important for the teacher to motivate them to do independent learning outside of the classroom. Career prospects, traveling, interest in languages and communication with peers or colleagues are common motivators to learn a new language. The teacher plays a key role to help students learn English, a patient, enthusiastic and caring teacher can make lessons enjoyable and motivate students to learn.

The first unit focuses on explaining what a good teacher is and what kind of roles a teacher might take during a lesson. The unit then goes on to describe differences in students and factors affecting their learning, such as age, culture and motivation. Different language levels are also explained. All in all the unit establishes that a good teacher usually has good students.
Whilst many of the things explained in the first unit seemed simple at first, I still felt it was very useful to stop to think about them carefully. I think dividing the teacher's role into several different modes of teaching and thinking about varying ways of being a teacher in a classroom situation was very useful for me.

The content in this first unit was very helpful. It made for a great intro into the course because not only did it provide information about what made a good teacher, but it also gave insight on what makes a good student. I think, overall, this lesson covered the basics of understanding the roles of each functions in teaching methodology. There are also explanation about those functions which has successfully enlightened reader on how to conduct teaching process with a true perspective of a teacher, which is very important as students have different categories ranging as their age develops. This unit detailed the foundational expectations of a "good"" v. ""bad"" teacher or learner. It further detailed the language proficiency levels students of English are classified by. From this lesson I learned which classifications apply to what levels of language skills This unit looked at what makes a good teacher , the different levels of learners and the motivations, behaviors and experiences learners bring to the classroom. I have also been given an insight into the types of learners which is important when looking at what level I would like to teach.

I have learned what makes a good teacher. It is important to love teaching in order to motivate and inspire your students. The teacher should be creative, passionate, patient, sensitive and kind. However, it is necessary that the teacher have very good subject knowledge to be able to teach productively. The role of a teacher cannot be summarized in one word. The teacher should be a manager or controller as well as resource or facilitator. As a teacher, it is important to lead your students while also letting them express themselves. The teacher should organize activities methodically while encouraging the students to be creative as well. A good teacher knows how to effectively perform these different roles in order to maximize the students learning abilities. There will always be roadblocks and difficulties in learning a new language. As a teacher we need to know what motivates the students and what makes them loose interest in learning. The different behavior, the age factor, the culture, the learning and life experiences, the language awareness and most of all their knowledge level in English language.

This unit talks about what an ideal teacher and student should be. I learned the different characteristics and descriptions of a good teacher and a good learner, but what I really enjoyed about this unit is the way adults and
young learners differ from each other. Here are some things I learned from this unit. I learned that adult learners and young learners differ in a number of things: first, in the area of motivation. I found out that adults make a conscious decision to attend classes because they know that it is economically beneficial for them ? a good command of the language equates to higher pay. This serves as good motivation for adult learners to be serious with their classes. I also learned, on the other hand, that young learners are motivated to attend classes because they may want to please their teacher, their friends, or their peers. This will be challenging to teachers because this situation will require them (the teachers) to make their classes more diverse and exciting to keep young learners motivated. Second is in the area of experience, adult learners bring with them a wide range of experience to class. This helps make lessons more engaging as they share their stories of success and failure to one another especially in the area of language learning. I believe that it is quite motivating for adults to talk about their jobs and experiences because it brings language learning to a personal level. I also learned that although young learners may have had some prior learning experience, there are still gaps that need to be filled in
Before they can begin talking about their own accomplishment and disappointment in language acquisition. For example, the teacher can engage young learners in a discussion about jobs, but they can only talk about jobs based on what other people say about it and not based on their own experience. This activity would not be as engaging as participating in the discussion using a first-hand account. Last is in the area of behavior. According to the reading, attention span plays an important role in discipline in the classroom. This being said, activities in adult classes naturally have less problems in terms of discipline because they have longer attention span. On the other hand, young learners lose interest in the task easily. This may cause disruption in the activity as they try to find other sources of interest in class. Because of this, the teacher has to build and encourage motivation in order to curb the effect of young learners? short attention span.

I thought that this was a good intro unit because it gave me a well-rounded idea on what levels there are, different ways that I can have a certain role in the class, plus ways that I can understand better of why the person is attending my class. The different roles a teacher can have in the classroom stood out most as each can have a different effect in the classroom.

One of the most important aspects of this Unit is what a good teachers really is, and how the different roles of a teacher plays to students. You might have to act as one role in one class, and then have a completely different role in your other class. It is important to quickly evaluate which role you need to act and when it is appropriate to act that role. The role depends on what level the students are, which can range from Beginners - Advanced. You will need to evaluate whether or not an organizer role or manager role is important for your group of students. (Or any of the other 7 roles mentioned in Unit 1)
In Unit 1 we also got a quick introduction of what a good learner is and why different people want to take a
tefl class. It is important to think about the different learning experiences that people bring in to the class room. It is also extremely important to be culturally sensitive and understand why students will act differently in a classroom. Remember to think about life experiences, their motivation to attend the class and any nervousness that might become an issue. What is most important to remember is to motivate the students to become great English speakers, and always remember how students can be motivated differently.

I have learned that there are many characteristics of a good teacher, and that generally a good teacher promotes good students. There are a variety of learning levels the students may be on, it is important to identify the level. After the level has been identified the teacher will be more equipped to communicate with the students appropriately. Encouragement and support are very important when guiding
young learners. Teaching very young students might be most effective with games and songs, where as adults will be stimulated by conversations.

This unit helped learn and reaffirm what the quality of a teacher is. It helped me understand different teaching styles. It broadened my thoughts on students learning styles and different challenges they may have. It broke down the different language levels of students. I also learned the different reasons students may or may not be motivated to learn English. This unit provided a summary of the different types of teaching and learning that may take place inside of a classroom. The initial section on different teaching approaches, from Manager to Monitor, allowed me to think of classroom control as a system of styles suited to the needs of the learners and the activities in which they participate. This unit thoroughly explained the roles of the teacher and student. The section I found most useful was the different roles of a teacher and the importance of knowing when to use each role. I believe the most important roles are manager or controller, assessor, facilitator, prompter, and model. The components of a good teacher were also helpful. However, I think one of the most important qualities of a good teacher is to motivate their students. Once a student is motivated to learn, everything else will fall into place.

In this unit, it focuses on the two main components / characters of a learning process; the teacher and the student. I got inspired on how they define a teacher. I believed that a good teacher should really care more on his/her students, on their learning that caring on his/her teaching. Caring for your learners and caring for on your teaching are two different things. Caring for your learner means the teacher should not stop after he/she teaches the lesson. It is his/her responsibility to assure that his students are learning. If they understood the lesson. If you the teacher is just caring on his teaching; then his/her concern to student's learning can stop after the discussion. The thinking of the teacher who cares much more than his students learning would be "I am done with my part. I already taught the lesson. The students should do their part."" Which should not be. It is the duty of the teacher to make sure that students understand the lesson.

It was interesting to learn the various types of teaching approaches, especially because I have spent most of my life on the student-side of this relationship and I recognize many of the moves. This chapter talks a lot about the relationship between the student and the teacher and how this link can make or break a learning environment. I also think it's important for a teacher to not only think OF the student, but to think AS the student. Remembering and recalling the student experience seems like it would be a valuable indicator.

This unit has helped to reaffirm my thoughts on what a good teacher should be as well as a good student. Sometimes it is difficult to have an entire class of good students, due to the nature of the students personality, but as a teacher being able to adapt to each student and situation, to remember the ability of the students within the class as well as between classes, to be very patient and understanding, is a very important aspect of teaching.

Unit one describes characteristics of good teachers and good learners. It was interesting to note the different reasons many students are motivated to learn English, or another language. The different language levels were new to me and it is interesting to see what levels the students are at based on their knowledge and skills. It is also interesting to note that the culture and first language impact students' ways of learning english and how comfortable they feel about participating in certain activities. The different factors of age, learning experience, motivation, nervousness, language awareness, behavior problems and life experience were something I had not really defined or thought about. It is interesting that there are always multiple factors influencing learners, which is something I learn every day in the classroom.

In unit one I have many new things about the nature of the student teacher relationship. Additionally, I have learned many things that make a good teacher, for example, a good teacher should know students' weaknesses and should try to give help and individual attention where necessary. I have learned that a good teacher will be able to assess the kind of students he is dealing with and ajust the class content and interraction accordingly. The teacher also needs to intervene enough to motivate the student, but not too much because it's important that the students also take responsibility for their learning experience. Unit1 gave me great examples on qualities, roles and responsibilites of both teachers and students and introduced the basics of a student-centered lesson. I also learned about factors that define a good learner and problems I may face when teaching students with different age, social background, culture, motivation and so on. I have been living in Australia to study English for almost one and half years. I started a study as pre-intermediate but now I am studying ITTT
tesol class. I want to study hard as much as I can, so I want to be a good teacher if i can get an opportunity. It is important for them to help on the class each other. Teacher have obligation that teach students well and students should concentrate on the lesson. If teacher will be good teacher, students also will be good students and it was very useful study for me to be English teacher.

The teacher's role is - manager/controller, organizer, assessor, prompter, participant, tutor, resource/facilitator, model, observer/monitor. The role depends on the
Type of activity and what is expected of the students.
Age classifications: Adults (18+),
young learners (very young learners < 7, pre-puberty learner 8 to 12, early teen-age learner 13 to 17).
General patterns of learners of different age groups: Young learners have a more open minded approach to learning new experiences and methods than adults. Adults usually make the decision to learn a language themselves, whereas young learners rarely decide for themselves, and to make classes more motivating for young learners a teacher should do more to make the class varied and interesting. Adults will be generally more nervous than
children and so the teacher should help to build confidence and be gentle and encouraging. Adults usually want to use native language matching rather than exclusive use of target language while young learners are more likely to absorb a language as they did their native language. Young learners will have a higher attention span than young learners and thus the teacher will have to deal with discipline and behaviour with young learners. Adults will have many more life experiences and this makes it easier to build rapport and have interesting discussions. The teacher should be aware of different cultures and differences to ensure success in the class.
There are typically six language levels (also per the
european framework): basic users - A1 (breakthrough or beginners) and A2 (elementary or waystage), independent users - A3 (pre-intermediate or threshold) and A4 (intermediate or vantage), and proficient users - A5 (upper intermediate or effective operational proficiency) A6 (advanced or mastery).
Students are motivated mostly by - future prospects, travel, improving grades/success at exams, living in an English speaking country, being able to communicate with colleagues/friends/partners, and interest in the language.

Unit 1 - 'The role of the teacher' has covered a variety of topics generally relating to the way a teacher interacts with his/her students. It has ranged from discussing the different styles of teaching to what makes a good teacher and how the students past experiences, whether cultural, personal or study-related come into play. All of these aspects intertwine to create a vast array of appropriate methods dependent on very specific circumstances amongst the class and then again upon each individual student. We are taught how the outcome of each teaching style or method can affect the differing student, focusing on moderation of each style and appropriate usage. Above all i have taken from this the importance of the role you play in a position of authority. The fundamental necessity of being kind, patient and approachable - human and relatable. Having a good relationship with your students is critical in maintaining their keen interest in whatever they are learning from you. They need to see you as a friend who is invested in their learning, whom they can feel comfortable asking questions and sharing their insecurities and pride with. A teacher who can nurture a safe growth and lend support yet encourages each student to believe in and develop their own ability to individual learning. To be able to scale the rocky cliff alone with a safety net at the bottom. You will need to pay careful attention to each students own personal nature and background in order to effectively and equally nurture them all with the specific needs that they require, whether more distance and independence or more sharing and communication.

In this unit I have learnt everything important about parts of speech. That means about 1) nouns - that they are countable and uncountable, 2) adjectives - that we have comparative and superlative, 3) articles - that we can have indefinite, definite or zero article, 4) verbs - that we have transitive and intransitive verbs and verbs of action and state and regular and irregular, 5)adverbs, 6) gerunds, 7) pronouns - that we have personal, possessive, reflexive and relative, 8) prepositions, 9) conjuctions. This unit gave me a good overview of things I already knew but sometimes was a bit confused or unsure about.

Lesson 2 focused on basic parts of speech. The most important part of this lesson taught me that in order for students to take you, as a teacher, seriously you must understand the subject you are teaching. This lesson gave me the building blocks of grammar and introduced easy ways to understand and, consequently, explain parts of speech like noun, verb, subject, gerund, etc. I found this introduction very useful and it will help me in explaining basic grammar points to my students. One part that I found particularly interesting and useful was the placement of adverbs, as this is something native speakers do not think about but non-native speakers will need help understanding.

This Unit made me aware of how subtle grammar can be. It made me more familiar with parts of speech. This unit thoroughly reviews the basics of the parts of speech. It also provides information about what may be confusing for learners of English. When possible, the rules of grammar usage are provided. Although I have a background it grammar, review is always helpful, especially regarding count and non-count nouns, the fact that my, his, your, etc. are adjectives and not pronouns.

This unit was a very good refresher on parts of speech that I don't normally refer to in my daily life. Remembering the different types or classifications of verbs and adjectives, for example. Unit 2 updated me and even gave me a better understanding on some basic skills of the English language. It was refreshing to re-learn general English functions and skills. Parts of speech are confusing. I realize now the struggle my students have learning English. Nouns, verbs, articles, and pronouns were familiar to me
Before the unit but not to the extent that the unit covers them. The other parts were new to me and are still difficult to recognize and define. Gerunds were the most interesting to learn about, and infinitives were the hardest for me to understand.

I may have managed to learn more in this unit than I did in high school. I have used Word to correct my grammatical errors for so long that I barely remember how the errors occur. I can now better predict my writing problems
Before they occur. The real challenge will be recalling these rules in my teaching. This unit explains some of the more simple grammar points that I may use in my class. I feel I have learnt a lot about sentence structures and how the English language is put together as well as the names for different types of words. I feel that this will be very useful when teaching my class. The unit consists of detailed information on the basics of English grammar making it very clear and easy to understand and explain to students. Though there seems to be a small contradiction between the rule and the example in the adjectives section about the plastic table, still the unit overall was of a great help in teaching process.

I have learned a lot about different part of speech in this unit. For example the difference between adjective and adverb which is that adjective characterize the noun and adverb add meaning to the verb. Although this unit was a (mostly) basic overview of the different parts of speech, it was a very useful review. It's interesting to think just how complicated it can be when learning this information as a second language and as this unit is designed for teachers, it made a point to explain just how difficult some of the parts are to learn for those learning English as a second language. There are different types of nouns: common, proper, compound and collective nouns. There are countable and uncountable nouns. You use many or a few with countable nouns and much or a little is used with uncountable nouns. Verbs describe an action or a state. The are three auxiliary verbs: to do, to have and to be. There is a difference between transitive and intransitive verbs. Adjectives describe nouns. There are also possessive, comparative and superlative adjectives. Adverbs modify verbs. There are different types of adverbs: adverbs of place, manner, time and frequency. There are also adverbs of

Unit Two gave a short overview of the nine parts of speech.I was already quite familiar with most of the information covered in this unit. Though a good review is always helpful. What I found most useful was the description of the gerund. And the description of the zero article was most excellent. It was short, direct, and very clear.

As with Lesson 1, the information is basic. To my surprise though, although I vaguely recognized the various labels, the material was distant. For example, the parts of speech labels recalled very early grammar lessons. AS the introductory material noted, although I understood the usage, I was unfamiliar with many rules. Among these were rules about the order of modifiers and transitive / intransitive verbs. I had the strange sense that this lesson was designed for those who speak English as a second or third language. THis lesson did help me think about the challenges of teaching material that is natural to me to an English language learner.

This unit was really interesting and it was a great brush up of the grammar that we learnt as
kids. It was great review because after a few years the usage of the language become very intuitive and you follow what feels 'natural' so it was a good review it again and re learn the formal terms/definitions and the rules for its usage. I think it would be a great help to explain the correct usage of the grammar with reason.

Unit 2 Parts of Speech
The simplest for of structure is the basic sentence. A sentence must consist of at least a subject and a verb, but will usually consist of more words than this
1. Nouns
Usage ? A noun
Names people, animals, places, things, qualities, states.
Main Types
Common ? Person, teacher, log, chair, sparrow, school, home. ( no capital letter )
Proper ? Chris, Scotland, Batman, Earth ( Always capital letter )
Compound ? post office, bus driver, car park, textbook, bookcase. ( two nouns joined makes a new noun)
Abstract ? beauty, intelligence, democracy, happiness. ( something we experience but cannot be touched )
Collective ? family, flock, herd ( name of a group of individuals as if they were one )
1.1 Plurals ? More than one
Noun plurals are usually made by adding 's' to the end of the word. If the noun ends in ch, sh, x, s then we ad 'es' instead.
e.g. cats, beds, watches, wishes, boxes, buses
A noun ending in 'f' will usually be replaced with 'v' and add 'es'
e.g. thief ? thieves
Note there are exceptions to this rule
e.g. brief ? briefs
And many other exceptions to both these plural rules.
e.g. tooth ? teeth foot ? feet child ?
children man ? men
These are called irregular noun plurals and there are no rules for them, they must be memorised.
1.2 Countable Nouns
People, creatures, and things that can be counted
They can be preceded by articles a/an/the and can be used in the plural.
e.g. a car, an egg, the table, the pig
1.3 Uncountable Nouns
They cannot have a/an in front of them and cant be used in the plural.
e.g. music, advice, rice, bread, water, information
Note that some nouns can be countable and uncountable depending on the sense in which they are used.
e.g. We have chicken in the fridge ? one bird
They have chicken on the menu tonight ? Unknown amount
Whether a noun is countable can have an affect on other parts of the sentence.
e.g. I don't have much money ? correct
I don't have many money ? wrong
That is because much is used with uncountable nouns and many is used with countable.
2. Adjectives
We use adjectives to describe nouns such as people or things. If you describe your home town you might use big/small clean/dirty etc. These are adjectives and describe a place/object/person.
Adjectives are often used in groups of two or three. In this list form the last one is separated from the others by 'and'.
?The teacher is tall, dark, and stunning.?
However
?She is a tall, dark, stunning teacher.?
A noun has now ended our list of adjective, Notice the 'and' has disappeared, this brings greater emphasis to the adjectives used.
2.1 Adjective Order
Should these adjectives go in a particular order?
e.g. 1. The square, big, white sign.

2.2 Comparisons
We often wish to compare two people or things.
e.g. Pete is taller than Garry.
Garry is older than Pete.
Adjective + 'er'
Note for a few short adjectives we change the final 'y' into an 'I'
Before adding 'er'
e.g. easy ? easier happy ? happier
Others double the final consonant 'n' 't' or 'd' when preceded by a single short vowel
e.g. thin ? thinner hot ? hotter
Adjectives of more than two syllables do not ad er because they are too unwieldy to pronounce
e.g. Elisa is beautifuler than Rose X

4. Verbs
A 'doing' word, either an 'action' or a 'state'.
Action words ? go, watch, play, eat, walk etc. (an action that can be seen )
State words ? be, seem, appear, smell, fear etc ( a state that we cannot see)
All verbs are either transitive or intransitive
4.1 Transitive verbs
A transitive verb is a verb that is followed directly be an object. In the sentence ?David plays football?, David is the subject, and football is the object. As the verb play has an object, it is transitive.
e.g.
a) eat, cook, read, study, finish, understand
b) cut, repeat, squash, contradict, unearth, make
Group B must always be followed by an object.
Group A have do not have to be followed by an object if they simply describe what someone is doing, and not doing it to anyone in particular.
When transitive verbs are used in this way, they are used as if they were intransitive verbs.
4.2 Intransitive verbs
An intransitive verb is a verb that cannot be followed directly by an object. It does not do anything to anyone or any thing.
e.g. go, arrive, skate, fall, come, depart, sleep
These verbs are often related to a time, place, frequency etc.
e.g. I will arrive tomorrow ? you can't arrive anyone/thing!
As we saw earlier some verbs can be either transitive or intransitive, depending on how they are used.

4.3 Infinitives
All verbs have a base form. The examples of transitive and intransitive verbs given above are in there base forms.
However, we often refer to the infinitive of the verb. This refers to the action as a whole and is formed by preceding the base form with to.
e.g. to go, to cry, to eat
Some intransitive verbs are followed by infinitives to denote a consequence of an action.

4.4 Auxiliary verbs
Auxiliary verbs help to for a tense or an expression by combining with present or past participles of other verbs. An auxiliary verb is not the verb that carries the main meaning; it simply helps for a structure. There are only three auxiliary verbs : do, have, and be.
e.g. John is having a shower at the moment.
I have been to

5 Adverbs
In general these terms add meaning or information to the action, quality or state denoted by a verb, hence the name. Adverbs of
degree can also modify an adjective or another adverb.
There are five main types of adverbs:
Manner ? well,hard,slowly,quickly
Place ? above, up, here, there
Time ? now, then, soon, recently
degree ? very, much, really, quite
Frequency ? once, twice, sometimes, always
Other notable types:
Comment / attitude ? Actually, perhaps, surely, wisely
Linking ? firstly
Viewpoint ? mentally, morally, officially
Adding / limiting ? also, either, only, else, too
So how do we form adverbs? Most are formed by adding 'ly' to an adjective.
e.g. slow ? slowly quick ? quickly honest ? honestly
As ever, exceptions:
e.g. tidy ? tidily fast ? fast
Where do adverbs go in a sentence?
An adverb will normally be placed after the object of a transitive verb :
e.g. he ate his lunch quickly.
And immediately after an intransitive verb :
e.g. He fell awkwardly in the playground.
However, adverbs of frequency are placed between the subject and the verb or between the auxiliary verb and the verb
e.g. She always sleeps after lunch
Where do multiple adverbs go in a sentence?
Rule > place > manner > time
e.g. He will drive there slowly tomorrow.
6. Gerunds
A gerund is the -ing form of a verb used as a noun.
Playing (subject ) tennis is fun ( verb )
Playing is a gerund. It is used as the subject of the sentence
We (s) enjoy (v) playing tennis (o)
Playing is used as the object of the verb enjoy
He's (s) excited (v) about (pp) playing tennis (o)
Playing is used as the object of the preposition about
Note
Some verbs, such as admit, consider, delay, remember, like etc. are usually followed by the gerund form when another verb is used.
e.g. He admitted stealing the money.
Prepositions are sometimes followed by the gerund if an action is indicated.
e.g. Sue always has coffee before attending a staff meeting.
7. Pronouns
Pronouns are words that are used instead / in-place of more precise nouns or noun phrases.
Types:
Personal
I, me, you, he, him, she, her, we, it, us, they, them
As a subject : I, he, she, it, we, you, they
As an object: me, him, her,. It, us, you, them
e.g. I like everybody. Not everyone likes me. They have a car. It belongs to them.
Possessive
Mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs, its ( note that its never has an apostrophe )
These types have no article and are followed by a noun
That care is mine.
Reflexive
Myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves
Relative
who, which, that, whose
Used to connect clauses in a sentence. They are used to introduce relative clauses.
The man that I marry will be rich
Whilst being fairly simple in usage, students of many nationalities have a tendency to confuse subject pronouns (which come before a verb in a sentence ) and object pronouns ( which normally come after a verb)
Possessive pronouns like mine are often confused with possessive adjectives like my. Like other pronouns, possessive pronouns replace nouns while possessive adjectives describes them.

Common confusion between the two involves his and its as both can be either possessive pronouns or possessive adjectives, depending on how they are used in a sentence.
8. Prepositions / Conjunctions
Prepositions
Usage ? Prepositions show the relationship between a noun or pronoun and some other word in the sentence.
Prepositions can be one of the more difficult grammatical points for both students and teachers alike. The difficulty lies in the fact that there is no uniformity when it comes to preposition placement. However we can say that there are at least three categories, place, time, and movement. Certain types can be places in all categories.
Main types
Time /
Date ? at, on, by, before, in , from, since, for, during, to, until, after, about
Movement ? from, to, in, into, on, onto, by, off, out, through, over
Place / Position ? in, at, on, by, above, over, under, below, beneath, beside, between, near, next to, behind, in front of
There are some common prepositions that don?t neatly fit into any of te above categories such as 'of' and 'with'.
8.1 Conjunctions
Conjunctions join words or groups in a sentence.
They can do two things:
Join words of the same class, i.e. pairs of nouns / adjectives / adverbs / verbs / phrases
and, but, or, nor, yet
also: both...and, either...or, neither...nor, not only...but also
e.g. He plays squash and rugby. I'm young and reckless. She doesn't drink or smoke.
Join clauses of sentences:
as, as soon as, before, since, until, when, because, although, unless, so, in order that
e.g. He started
work as soon as he arrived. I married her because she is gorgeous

This unit took me a while to get my head around. It really shows how much we take for granted in the English language when we are native speakers. There was so much of this lesson that I remember learning the basics of in primary school

There are 10 parts of speech described in this unit. They are: Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, Adverbs, Articles, Prepositions, Conjunctions, Pronouns, Infinitives, and Gerunds. Nouns are the part of speech used to describe people, places, concepts, and things. They can be either countable or uncountable, and can be common, proper,compound, or collective. Most other parts of speech relate to nouns and pronouns in some way, shape, or form. Verbs are used to describe either and action of a state of being. They can either be transitive or intransitive depending on whether or not they are followed by and object. In addition, verbs help set the tense of the action depending on which ending is attached to them. The tense describes whether or not the action is in the future, currently happening, or already happened. It should be noted that while some verbs have a standard way of being conjugated many are irregular and their various tense forms must be memorized. Auxiliary Verbs help to transform sentence structures for specific purposes. These include: questions, negatives, short answers, and the aforementioned tenses. Adjectives are primarily used to describe nouns, but some can used to as adverbs to describe actions. Included in adjectives are possessive adjectives that describe ownership as well as comparative and superlative adjectives which describe differences in quality between nouns and the highest order of an adjective respectively. Like verbs, adjectives have both regular endings and irregular forms. Adverbs are used to describe the way in which and action is performed. They cover the qualities of manner, place, time, frequency, as well as
degree. Articles are the part of speech used to establish the exclusivity of the nouns being discussed. The indefinite articles "a/an"" are used when the noun used is considered one of many. The definite article ""the"" is used when the noun is a specific one out of a group or unique. The Zero Article is simply the lack of an article all together making it to where the sentence describes all of a particular noun group. Prepositions are used to show a particular relationship between nouns/pronouns and the rest of the sentence. They help to clarify things such as time

Teacher need to understand and be able to explain grammar to students. As native speakers, we tend to forget the grammar, because we first learn to speak English by what are parents have taught us what was correct and what was incorrect. Then at school, we learn the grammar rules behind it. For this reason many people forget the grammar rules, which are why it is important for the teacher to review the grammar rules, so that we can better explain it to the students. For me this lesson showed me how and why my language
works.As a native speaker I never give thought to how or why certain grammatical structures are the way they are.As for a teacher this lesson only seemed to help me if I need to explain why the way something is in the langauge...for maybe a learner who is well beyond a beginner.
