I have learned how important the relationship between a teacher and her students are. I have also learned that motivation plays a big role in the classroom and that if I want my students to be successful, my lessons will have to be interesting and varied. I also think it is important for the teacher to know her students
Before she can really have a relationship with them and before she will be able to earn their trust and respect. A teacher should always be on time and should be well prepared for every lesson to accommodate all the different students in her class. They are all individuals and should be treated like that.

Teachers must be flexible and able to preform many different roles depending on the activity. Some of these roles include, Manager/controller, organizer, assessor, prompter, participant, tutor, resource/facilitator, model, observer/ monitor.
Some qualities of a good learner are an acceptance or error correction and an ability to think about their own learning process.
Factors of learners are age, culture, language level, and motivation for learning. Age is a factor due to varying levels of learning experience, language awareness, and behavior problems.
Culture and first language helps the teachers break the students down into different levels, such as.
-beginners, breakthrough, basic user, A1
-elementary, waystage, basic user, A2
-low/ pre-intermediate, threshold, independent user, B1
-intermediate, vantage, independent user, B2
-upper intermediate, effective operational proficiency, proficient user, C1

Finally a students motivation is affected by having the ability to communicate with colleagues and friends and future career prospects.

The main concepts I understood from this lesson were the importance of understanding the characteristics of both good teachers and good students, for example a good teacher is caring and has subject knowledge, and a good student is willing to ask questions. I also learned the different roles a teacher plays such as an organizer and a resourse. Furthermore, I learned the learning differences between
young learners in adults in their quest for English, such as how adults tend to have more confidence and preset ideas in the classroom, whereas young learners are more open and unknowing of how to learn. More so, I learned the usual levels that language ability is broken into and what those levels mean. An example being beginners, speaking zero to basic amounts and communicating little. Finally I learned the reasons why students want to learn English, whether it be to communicate with foreigners, for new
job opportunites, or to travel themselves.

This unit was helpful in clarifying the attributes of a successful teacher, a successful learner, and the general levels used to describe a learner. It was interesting to note the importance of the teacher taking on various roles throughout a lesson, and the necessity of making a smooth transition among the various roles. The contents of this unit are: 1)what a good teacher is like; 2)what are the roles a teacher play in class; 3)what a good learner is like; 4)levels of English language skills; 5)the differences between adult and
young learners; and 6) students' motivations to take an English class.
These above contents are new to me and very helpful in my own class. I've learnt that a teacher should be fair, he/she must have enough knowledge of his/her subject and should be able to motivate students. And a teacher plays several roles in his/her class, but it's not easy to act those roles in a right time. So I think it takes time to grasp.
I also have learnt that learners are different because of their age differences. Young learners are different and young and adult learners are different too. They have different life experience, motivation, and language awareness. And their learning experience varies, their nervousness differ and adults will have less behavioral problems. Knowing this prepares me and I'm more confident to deal with students of different ages.
And by learning different levels of English language skills, I know students better and it helps me differentiate students while teaching.
And last but not least, I have an idea of students' motivations after studying this unit.

In this unit I learned the qualities that a good teacher must have in order to have successful students and keep them motivated, I also understood that the roles of a teacher in the classroom depend on the types of activities and the goal of the class. In the other hand I learned the qualities of a good student and differences between ages and language level. The most useful part of this unit is how the many different roles a teacher has to play has been effectively established. From this, I understand that the key challenge is for a teacher to know when to switch between the various roles such that it is beneficial for the learners.
We also need to understand what are the motivations behind students' wanting to learn English and how they are likely to react as students given their different backgrounds. All these will help us to be able to use more effective methods to inspire and motivate.
Of course, another challenging part would also be to gauge ability of the students. Firstly, we need to know where the students stand in terms of their language proficiency. After which, also monitor their progress and learn how to give feedback, whether positive or negative, in the most effective and motivating way possible.

The fundamental concept which I understand as an attempt this first unit addresses is the point that whenever a process of learning has any chance of succeeding and benefiting both the teacher and the student/students, the two parties involved; in this case the teacher and his/her students, both have a specific role to play to ensure that the highest possible level of learning, understanding, accuracy and fluency English is achieved by the learner and the highest possible
work satisfaction is achieved by the teacher.
More often than not the first major hurdle to needed be overcome is the initial anxiety induced by the cultural differences between the teacher and the students. The reason simply being that the teacher may find him/herself teaching English in a foreign country or the student may find him/herself having to learn English in a foreign country.
Whatever the circumstances, where there is a need to teach and a need to learn, a sense of mutual understanding and acceptance of the expectations placed upon the teacher and the learner forms a firm foundation to achieve positive results.
The teacher's personality aspects are usually the ones that determine the bulk of the success of learning, understanding and, accurate and fluent usage of English as a global medium of communication, commercially, politically, economically and so for and so on. The teacher has to be very open-minded and willing to adapt to the myriad of cultures worldwide especially when he/she wishes to teach English in the far East, Latin America, Middle East and Europe as the differences in culture that prevail are bewildering and may subsequently overwhelm and probably induce a false sense of inadequacy in the English teacher's ability to teach their own native English language.
Therefore it is crucial that the teacher should be kind, patient, supportive, impartial, knowledgeable, open-minded, encouraging, approachable, fun, creative, sensitive,committed and flexible. but most most importantly the teacher must have love for her students and have a passion for teaching. In short, when you truly have love all these other qualities flow naturally from inside a persons heart. In this case both the students and the teacher have an obligation to love and respect one another.
Although this may sound very simple and straightforward, the reality facing the teacher is that factors such as the students' age, culture, level of motivation, psychosomatic issues like nervousness, learning experience, language awareness, life experience and behavioural problems; whether genetically predisposed or culturally acquired, will inevitably influence the students willingness/ enthusiasm to put in the effort needed and applying themselves effectively to maximize their potential of learning English and reaching their desired goal- to learn, understand and speak the English language accurately, fluently eloquently.

I appreciated the content of the unit. I especially liked the breakdown of the role of the teacher and the role of the learner. I particularly liked the role of the observer or monitor - it is so important to evaluate what is going on in the classroom. It is hard to motivate students if you have no idea what is going on in the classroom. I think it is important to encourage and motivate students to want to learn, so that they will desire to be life long learners!
It is important to understand culture and the students' first language as well. I would never want to offend a student because I did not understand their culture. Part of being a good teacher is being a good motivator - there is a greater chance for success in the classroom. Being able to motivate the students requires keeping the lessons enjoyable, interesting, and useful. No one really wants to learn if there is no reason.

This unit explains the roles a teacher needs to have in order to teach students accodingly. Each student has their own needs and we need to be able to change our roles to fit these needs. It also talks about learning personalities so you are able to accommodate their needs. I have learnt what qualities make good leaners and teachers, the different roles of a teachers and the importance of switching between these roles appropriately, the learning differences between adults and younger learners, the different terminology and breakdown of language levels, and the common reasons why students are motivated to learn English. Through the unit 1 , i just have some ideas about what a good teacher should be . At the same time , i also have some first ideas about some kind of students i am gonna have to deal with in the future when i become a teacher .

Going into the various characteristics and roles of a teacher at first seems a bit rudimentary but after going into great detail on the reasons behind the roles and characteristics, it really helps understand the importance of each one. Figuring out what makes a good learner in turn will help me to discern when a student is truly motivated in my class and taking the necessary actions and mindsets to get all the student can get from the lessons. I particularly found the
assessment of levels to be helpful. I didn't know what the general levels were. This can help me as a teacher and as a student of other languages.

In this unit I have learnt about Teachers and Learners. I have learnt a good teaching will be kind and patient, will love teaching, be lively and entertaining, motivate learners, develop good rapport with the learners and involve all students equally. On the other hand, a good learner will be a good listener, have a desire to learn, be accepting of error correction and have a willingness to engage.
There are several roles a teacher may implement, including controller, organiser, assessor, prompter, tutor and facilitator. Each particular roles consists of particular activities or modes of behaviour the teacher will enact or execute. For example, a teacher implementing the prompter role will gently encourage the student along his or her teaching path, thus facilitating the learning process.
Each role will be implemented at the same or different times and will depend on the
Type of learning activity.
Generally, there are three age levels of learners: post puberty, pre-puberty and
young learners. Post puberty are often the most unmotivated and unwilling to take risks or experiment with language (possibly the most difficult to teach).
Pre-puberty learners are generally more receptive to learning sounds, words and grammar of a foreign language. Young learners are the biggest pool of learners and have shorter attention spans.
Other characteristics that impact a learners ability to learn are learning experiences, motivation, nervousness, language awareness, behaviour problems, life experience, culture and first language.
There are generally six levels associated with learning the english language, including beginners, elementary, low/pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate and addvanced.
Each level progresses in mastery of the language, ranging from basic knowledge of the language and lack of fluency and accuracy, to mastery of sentence formulation and construction, phonology, vocabulary, discussion of a rich variety of topic and mastery of subtle variations associated with language items. These language levels are the equivalent of the Common
european Framework recently established by the Council of Europe:
Breakthrough, Waystage, Threshold, Effective Operational Proficiency and Mastery.

I feel I've learned the basic principles of balancing the means to become a good teacher. This unit helped me understand the role of the teacher better because they are many hats that a teacher wears. The roles such as manager or controller, organizer, assessor, prompter and observer are very important to me. As a manager I have been in charge of my class and of the activities my students are given. As an organizer, I'm very comfortable giving instructions and organizing the students in pairs, groups. As an assessor, I have provided my students with feedback and have assessed their progress by evaluating and grading their class
work. As the prompter, I have encouraged my students while not taking the initiating away from the students. As the observer, I monitor my students every day in class while they are not fully aware of it. I also take notes when they are roleplaying so that I can praise them later on do in the class. You must have a love for teaching. As an effective teacher, it's imporant to be patient and kind and love what you do in order to motivate students to excel in class. You must also develop a good rapport with students so they can come to class every day and feel motivated about learning a new language. As a good teacher, you must also respect the students and never embarrass them by correcting every mistake they make. It's important also to know their strengths and weaknesses in order to be a good teacher.

This unit definitely tripped me up and took a long time for me to understand and finish. I considered myself a pretty good grammar student in elementary school but that was a REALLY long time ago. As I was reading through the unit, I was trying to remember the tricks I used as a child to keep all the information straight. Associating today's lesson with elementary school caused me to take too long to go through the unit. I determined that it was best for me to look at the information with new eyes and read the information multiple times in order for the concepts to stick.
It was a difficult day but alas I am done!

This unit was an excellent review of the parts of speech found in the English language. I found many of the examples to be helpful as I strive to prepare to teach people for whom English is not their first language. I particularly appreciated the concise definitions that were given for each part of speech, as these will assist in helping beginners to grasp the main concept of what function each part has, without over-complicating the explanation given.

This unit covered basic grammar principles and then broke down some grammar rules further, including covering gerunds, verb forms and comparative vs superlative adjectives. I have learned that even though I subconsciously preform most grammar rules correctly when writing and speaking, there are many I have forgotten or neglect. Although most teachers-especially those teaching lower level courses-need not be experts in grammar, it would be detrimental to not understand the basics of all these rule. Being familiar with the correct usage of articles, participles and tense form will only aid in being a successful teacher.

learnt the difference between different elements of a sentence and how to
work out and describe different parts of a sentence. Also was made aware of how to construct certain sentences and learnt new elements of sentences. This was a huge help for me. I needed to relearn the basics of grammar. Prepositions show the relationship between pro/nouns and the other word in the sentence. It was also very helpful to go over the many forms of verbs, especially in the irregular form. In this unit I have learnt the basic principles of the English language. I have learnt about adverbs, verbs, adjectives, nouns, conjunctions and many of the other ways sentences are formed. This unit contains the basics of understanding English and the way words are connected.

I have learnt the parts of speech.Grammer is not always the easiest. A noun names people, animals, places and things. An adjective describes nouns. An article is when referring to any member of the group or a spesific member. Verbs is "doing"" or an action. Adverbs add meaning or give more information to or of the action. Gerund is the -ing form of a verb used as a noun. Pronouns are used instead of nouns."

In this unit I have learnt that by knowing parts of speech I will have more confidence in teaching English as a subject. This will make an impression on my students and will give them confidence in learning the language. It is not expected of the teacher to be a walking grammar reference book, but to motivate them to speak and learn the language freely.

This unit for me was definitely a eye opener in regards of how much English grammar I had forgotten through the years. The different types of nouns, adverbs, adjectives, etc.. there proper names and varying rules associated with when and how to use them had long ago departed from my memory bank. I thoroughly enjoyed this section however, as it gave me a better understanding of my own native language and zeal to better understand and hopefully one day master it. English grammatical rules however are an infinite ocean because for every rule as we know there is usually always an exception, and even those rules and exceptions can change in time.

I think this unit reminded me of when I was in school and learning grammar. When I was a 6th grade student we had to diagram sentences, and as I was doing this section it reminded me of drawing those diagrams. I'm also reminded how much I have forgotten, and how grammar is just part of my everyday life without thinking about the technical aspects. It's important to gain a basic knowledge

this unit highlights the simplest form of structure, the basic sentence and parts of speech. the basic sentence consist of a subject and a verb, however, students must be familiarized with the basic structure of grammar which includes the various and sundry parts highlighted in this particular unit, to wit, nouns, adjectives, verbs, countable and uncountable nouns, prepositions, conjunctions, infinitives, etc. I learned that in order to be a good English teacher there is no getting around having a sound knowledge of grammar, without a solid foundation in grammar, teaching English is folly.

This unit reintroduced me to the grammatical break down of a simple sentence and how it could be difficult explaining it to an ESL learner. Knowing the different levels of comprehension and experience with English will help me further explain the break down on their terms. Taking each sentence piece by piece may help some of the learners who find it overwhelming.
