As a new teacher who had no prior experience, this unit has taught me that building relationships with new learners is very important. Much like in any other relationship that you build, rapport, age level, and the previous experience (whether good or bad) should all be looked at when deciding when to help a student or to step aside.

This unit deals wit characteristics and roles both teachers and learners.
Teachers have different roles to perform in the classroom, such as being managers, organizers, assessors, tutors, models, participators etc. All roles are needed while teaching and should be properly addressed to characteristics of learners, part of the lesson or different exercise.
Learners can have different motivations for learning English, different learning experience and behavior in the class. This will depend for example on the age of learner. We can split learners for
young learners (2-7 years old, 8-13 years old, 14-18 years old) and adults. Good teacher should be aware of the characteristics of the group he/she is teaching and act accordingly in order to motivate students in best possible way.
Finally learners have different level of language proficiency, such as beginner, elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper-intermediate and advanced. Teacher should chose the tasks and activities bearing in mind the level of English in the group.

Being a brilliant teacher is much more complicated and difficult than I originally thought. There are so many issues surrounding what particular age group I could be teaching, what their motivation levels are, and how much English the group has already learned. This unit has also opened my eyes to how I can directly affect/motivate the classroom, by playing the different roles I must apply while being in the classroom. It was also very important to understand the different motivators behind why students want to take English.

This unit was a useful introduction to the teacher/learner dynamic in a learning environment where English is not a native language. I gained some useful information about the levels of language acquisition in particular. As a fully qualified teacher, the content regarding the roles of teachers and learners was not as useful as the content on second language acquisition.

Communication is the key to success in a classroom, but communication can take many different forms. It is, at times, necessary for the teacher to be the manager in the classroom, such a to teach a lesson on a class-wide scale or to lead students through a reflection process. However, too much controlling and talking reduces student motivation and independent learning opportunities. The teacher needs to balance his or her time between speaking, prompting, and facilitating. By facilitating, the teacher enables students to learn from each other in cooperative learning activities or projects. Prompting allows the teacher to provide further instruction to specific students. This level of independence and ownership both builds rapport between teacher and students, and builds confidence and motivation within students.
This unit also introduced effects of culture and ability on the success of students and teachers in a lesson. For example,
asian cultures encourage students to listen and not speak and
tefl classrooms are viewed as disorderly due to the amount of noise. I think that the cross-culture experience will also lead to a misunderstanding between expectations. It will take careful execution to facilitate the opportunity to speak openly, yet simultaneously not breed contempt and disrespect from a profoundly misunderstood "freedom."" The various student levels also presents a quandary for the teachers. A beginning level student will not be able to communicate well in English

Unit 1 was a good review of the qualities that a teacher needs to be successful with students, ie: Love teaching, Be lively and entertaining, Motivate the students to succeed, have good to excellent subject knowledge, good rapport and interaction with all students equally, be able to correct without offending and give individual attention where needed.
It is necessary to be a good Manager and organizer and know when each is necessary at the proper time for it. Being a teacher means being sensitive to the individual needs of each student. If they need prompting, or perhaps just being a mentor. A good teacher can tell when different approaches are necessary. Assessing a student for further progress is important, as each student will make progress at their own pace. Participation by the teacher in various activities should be limited to only when necessary, and in most cases of class room instruction it is necessary to observe or monitor without dominating the class.
Good students will always show the same basic traits : the willingness to ask questions, learn, experiment, show a desire to learn and accept correction because they want to improve.
I find that in my case I would prefer to teach adults as there will be less discipline problems and concentration is generally better and also motivation. Adults take classes as a conscience choice,
children do not usually. In some areas Adults can be more challenging than children, especially where culture and past learning impede progress, whereas children often just absorb what they are told and don't need lengthy explanations.
And being aware of the levels of learning can be helpful in assessing where each studentis and
working with them according to their level,... Beginner, elementary, low intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate, and advanced. Understanding these levels can help the teacher to anticipate the learning process and what the student hopes to achieve from their lessons.
Their are many reasons for learning a second language such as English. The motivation of each student will be reflected in their determination to succeed, the effort they expend, and perhaps the length of time they study and the level they intend to reach in their individual progress. To assess each student properly it would be best to know each of their motivations and reasons for taking English Classes.

It provided a framework for the role of the teacher and mindsets and capabilities of the students by providing benchmark roles for the teacher and delineating levels of English acquisition and the factors that motivate the student to learn English. It emphasized the complexity of the student-teacher relationship and noted that, like students, teachers also vary. My take-away from this unit is to not only implement what I learned but to base part of my methodology on my experiences as both a student and a teacher. Ultimately, defining my own paradigms of "good student"" and ""good teacher.""

In this unit I learned there are many roles that a teacher takes on. For example, if a teacher is acting as a Manager, they are effectively in charge of the class and activities. Many Charismatic teachers are comfortable with this role as they are able to inspire the students. It is very important for the teacher to be able to switch from one role to the other during the lesson. I now understand that there are a group of essential characteristics that make a good teacher. Teachers should be kind, patient, lively and entertaining. Additionally, teachers should have good subject knowledge, be able to motivate students and correct them with offending them or effecting their motivation. Adults will usually come into the classroom with a long history of learning. This can cause adults to have a "fixed view"" of how teaching should be carried out. This unit introduces one to the uncountable skill of teaching. There is no set right or wrong way, but it gives numerous pointers and guidelines to assist in becoming a good teacher. It stresses the importance of teacher-student relationships, the importance of patience, kindness and understanding and how, like good shepherd, one should gently coax and encourage the entire class along together.
I have learnt that patience and possibly light humour are two key factors. I have also learnt (from a teacher's point of view) the different levels of
assessment and grading that I need to know. All in all, very enjoyable.

This particular unit not only introduced the course of ITTT but also discussed what generally makes a good teacher and a good learner. The unit focuses on the different roles of a teacher and also gives insights about students, the different levels of expertise in the English language, and the different motivations for learning English. From the unit, I learned the different qualities of being a good teacher and a good learner and what tends to be the most desirable qualities in each. I also learned that English language learners come in a wide age range (toddlers to adults) and each age group have different needs or qualities that the instructor must take into consideration.

From this unit, I became more aware of the student perspective and the variety of teaching methods that are available to me as an instructor. In particular, I am now able to better differentiate between the different levels of english learner abilities. It seems important to assess and understand both types of teachers and types of learners, as well as what makes a good teachers and a good learner, because too often we look at things from our own cultural perspectives and preferences, and that it is not ideal in a language course environment, where people may be very different among each other and may be more or less motivated. It is also important to understand why students want to learn a language to be able to motivate them more, making lever on their own interests. This was an interesting first unit.

I feel as if this unit clearly defines the various role(s) of a teacher and what an effective teacher will do to help the class grasp and retain important grammatical, phonetic, and etymological concepts. It also stresses that the teacher know what drives his/her students and raises awareness of the varying degrees of exposure to English language that some pupils may have over others. Most important of all, is that in order to have 'good' students it requires a 'stellar' teacher who is motivated, creative and enthusiastic about teaching English as a foreign or second language.

I feel that I have learned a bit on how to deal with students and not just to become a better teacher, but to create better learners as well. It is ideal to encourage the students to want to learn more so that they can succeed. This will then reflect back on the teacher. If students aren't encouraged to become great learners, they won't learn anything other than what they want to learn about.

I feel that unit one has introduced a wide range of skills needed to be an excellent teacher, and also how the relationship between the teacher and students can affect the learning process of the students. Along with the introduction, the unit gives examples of how each role is used including small tips to help with your teaching. Unit 1 also identifies level groups which are used to categorize students according to their language ability. These groups help teachers plan for class because each group has its own special need. For example, older students may feel patronized if given tasks that are generally accepted as childish, and on the flip side, younger students may feel bored or give up easily if the task/activity is above their ability.

This unit has definitely consolidated a lot of the knowledge I had already gained through previous teaching experience. It is also easy to understand and a great introduction for those who have not studied teaching. I think the most important is to establish a good relationship between the teacher and his students, to try to understand your students and find a way to get their interest.

This unit describes some of the common roles of a teacher and also discusses the common situation of the students that we teach. First, we ask ourselves, what makes a good teacher? This is an important question to ask ourselves so that we may frequently refine what we are doing in the classroom. Next, the unit went through some of the main roles a teacher plays in the classroom, such as an assessor or a participant. After studying this section, I will pay more attention to what role I'm taking on in the classroom, and I will make sure to have a greater balance between the roles. The unit also discussed what makes a good learner and what types of motivations the students have. When
working with each age group, there are benefits and things to consider. A good teacher will be sensitive to this. The unit also introduced me to some

tesol terminology that I was unfamiliar with, such as L1. That's much better than writing out "native language"" all the time!"

Seemed very basic. So simple it's difficult. Questions 15-19 were the most difficult to answer, as the unit focused mostly on "what's a good teacher/learner."" Perhaps it's my own failing for not paying closer attention to potential cause and effect elements of teacher/student engagement. I learned that for my personal teaching method, it is better to be a engage students than to just lecture them. I don't think the controller method is the most effective method of teaching. I think that a lot games and visual activities would be the most effective method , because visual activities really do ecourage students to learn. This unit was about the characteristics of a good teacher and learner. Also the difference between ages and culture was explained. And also the problems a teacher can expect when teaching the different age groups. In this unit I have learned about the qualities that I should strive for as a teacher. The roles that I must master inorder to become better at teaching. I have learned about the language levels that are internationally recognized as well as the differences between different learners.

Unit 1 introduces the basic traits of both teachers and learners. We learned about the types of roles a teacher will assume in class depending on the activities. We also learned about what motivates students to learn a new language and how to assess their basic level based on their skills.
Teachers should be aware of their role in class and to make sure that the students interests and learning are the focus of the lesson. Teachers should absolutely care about their teaching skills and ability but only so that their classes are the best they can be.

Everything seems clear and easy to understand. Yet the clear and easy to understand part is not always the easy to implement. As scuba dive teacher I do understand the main topic. For my point of view is the motivation of your student the most important. There are no bad students, only not inspiring teachers. Yet a teacher should also need to know when to cut his or her losses. As I will be teaching private lessons only I will make sure to test my students on this. It is all about a persons willingness either the teacher or the student. In country side
japan I can understand the motivation is very low. No one here travels or has the intention to travel past japans borders. Foreigners are few and far away. In the culture people do not really mingle or talk easily. Television shows are in
japanese only as so do the movies in cinema's. Culture and owns language protection plays a big part here.

This unit focuses on what is a good teacher and a good learner. I learned that I should switch up the roles that I implement during my class. This will help keep my students engaged and be more successful at learning English. I am happy that I am teaching the
young learners because they learn the easiest. Teaching is very observational and requires the teacher to be aware of their environment and of their students. Students are all individual and have differing backgrounds and needs. What I learned in this Unit are some fairly good tips for being a good and efficient teacher. I also learned what a good student and learn should be like, and what kind of qualities they possess. I think I will be better prepared because of this Unit.

This unit has shown me the different roles a teacher has to play in every lesson. Each lesson has the possibility of a teacher taking up a variety of different roles. However, the onus is not only on the teacher providing a quality service, the learner also has their own responsibilities in actively showing an interest in the language. I learned about the different traits of a good teacher. And of a good learner, which the teacher should encourage.
I also learned about the factors that influence the pupils in the class room. Like motivation, age, etc. These play an important role in how you approach the students and the class This was a very interesting unit and reinforces what I learnt at teacher's college. This unit sets the basis for all the other units. I enjoyed it thoroughly. This unit was quite brief and gave a well written overview of the role of the teacher and that of a student.

Understanding the relationship between teachers and learners is pivotal to having a class of 'good' learners and a good teacher. For the teacher, understanding and
working to suit the varying levels of English proficiency goes a long way to make sure an advanced student isn't bored by easy material and conversely, a beginner student isn't overwhelmed by your lesson and become discouraged. Also, understanding the various roles that a teacher must take on is important. While some days, a hands on approach is necessary to make sure the students are enjoying learning and are engaged by the material; and other days a more facilitative role is taken on to ensure the material is properly presented. A 'good' teacher is able to maneuver between these different roles with ease and have success in all of them.

At first, i thought this unit was about how teachers should teach their students, and how learners should learn from their teacher. Actually i was expecting something more like a lot of examples of teaching and learning for example. But this unit was more like rules, motivating, what should do and not do, things like that. As a "future"" English teacher for foreigners This unit was useful to understand the role of the teacher and role of the student. I find that description of each role of a teacher is a very useful part of Unit 1. It gives a clear understanding of each role and, at the same time, describes a variety of activities for learners at a class.
Unit 1 also gives information about the difference between teaching young and adult students and n idea of how different activities at a class should be for different age groups.

In this lesson I learned about the different roles a teacher can take in the classroom. I learned that in an ESL class they teacher shouldn't always be the controller. It's important to allow the students the opportunity to participate in class. I also learned that a different approach to teaching may need to be taken based on a child's age.
children who are 14-18 tend to be more shy about making mistakes than younger children. I learned that there are different language levels. Sometimes class are divided by language level while other times you may have students for multi levels. Students have different reasons for learning a language. Sometimes however students are not in the class by choice this is sometimes the case for non adult learners and you have to find ways to motivate students in these circumstances.

I did not know that there were so many different roles that a teacher can play over the course of just one class period. I had a general idea of some of the functions of the roles that a teacher should play but did not know that it could be broken down into certain methods of teaching. It is important to fully understand the audience that you are teaching and what level they are at to create a lesson plan that will be accessible to the whole class. By designing the lesson plan around the skill level you can generate a greater interest in the subject.

It was a pretty straight-forward lesson. It just added terminology to ideas or groups that I was already aware of. I was not aware of the classifications of levels of a student and furthermore unaware of the existence of the 6 levels of learning established by the Common
european Framework. I feel the section on what makes a good learner as well as a good teacher reflect the general societal opinions of both parties and nothing was a big surprise in this unit.

In this lesson I learned about what it means to be a good teacher. The most important thing you can do as a teacher is understand the level of your students and thus know the correct way to teach. Beginners are typically easily excited and highly motivated as the introductory skills may come a bit easier and show more rapid progression than those of the high level; as they may possibly hit a plateau. While some students may require a little extra attention and tutoring it is always important to make each student feels important. The relationship between student and teacher is complicated and anything but simple. Knowing the variety of teaching practices and understanding your students learning levels will aid in strengthening this relationship.

Although a lot of what was covered in the first unit seemed like basic knowledge for anyone who has been in a classroom setting

european Framework prior to this. This has also helped me realize and understand what language level I was classified as when I had studied foreign languages. All in all, a very good short section that will definitely prove useful.

I found this unit to be very helpful mainly on two levels; learning about different levels and
Types of students and the different roles and tasks a teacher has to adopt. For example, the explanation of the different language levels (Beginners to Advanced)is useful for deciding what type of English lessons and activities are needed. Furthermore, this framework also helps the teacher to think about what role they must play during the lessons in order to motivate and encourage the students. I also likes what the unit said about different cultures having different approaches to learning and therefore, different problems with the English language. This made me realise that teachers need to be aware of any cultural issues regarding their students and be aware of what is spoken in the lesson. Overall, I really enjoyed reading and learning from this unit.

This topic is useful to me. When I was a student, I never though about a good teacher, a good learner, and the roles of a teacher. This unit was about the basic rules of English grammar. Although I've learned most of the rules (such as what nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, prepositions, and articles are), reading through this unit was a time of reflecting on whether I truly knew the types, functions, and placements in a sentence. What I learned new was that the connection between verbs and adverbs. To a transitive verb (a verb that is followed directly by an object) an adverb is placed right after the object; to an intransitive verb (a verb that cannot be followed directly by an object) an adverb is placed immediately after the intransitive verb. However, the exception is when the adverb is an adverb of frequency. Adverbs of frequency are placed between the subject and the verb, or they are placed between the auxiliary verb and the verb.

This unit went over the basics of a sentence in English. Each part of speech was given its own section and described the different types of each part of speech. By giving examples and example sentences, I was able to refresh my memory of the specifics to each part of speech. Going through the specific types and kinds of each part of speech helped me to organize the specifics of each. I learned and refreshed my memory about the specifics of each part of speech. Although there are exceptions to rules for the English language, this section taught me more about what rules are in place for word order and so on.

This unit focuses on identifying the different parts of speech. From basic sentence structure of noun, verb, adjective. To more complex topics, such as superlatives, auxiliary verbs, gerunds, prepositions, conjunctions, etc. Being able identify some basic grammar helps your credibility with students and should help keep them motivated. Sometimes we take for granted our ingrained knowledge of grammar. This chapter helps us realize why we use the English language the way we do.

This unit reviewed a very vital part of the English language, grammar. There are several parts to a noun such as common, proper, compound, abstract, and collective. The different parts of speech include nouns, articles, verbs, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns, adjectives, conjunctions, and prepositions. In order to be able to teach a language it is important to be able to break up sentences and words grammatically in order to explain correct order of wording and sentence structure.

Unit 2 parts of speech I found very difficult at first but after reading all of the course notes several times I have come to grips with most of it. The way it was explained in the course notes was very good. The
video helped with this unit as well. This unit explains the most important parts of speech that are used in the English language. I learned the basic components of English grammar that I feel will allow me to be a more confident teacher. I am happy to know that I am not the only teacher who has had difficulties teaching English grammar. This unit focused on different grammar components. This unit was both very informative and difficult because went into detail about different parts of a speech. Sections three regarding the two types of articles (definite and indefinite) in English was more complicated to understand and I would have preferred to see more examples.

This unit covered basic grammar and parts of speech, it provided examples and sample sentences of each. For many of parts of speech I learned how better to explain the usage to students. For many of parts of speech I had not fully understood myself but I feel as though I have a better understand now and I can better explain the parts of speech and proper usage to students. This section was extremely refreshing. It helped me pull up all of my understanding about sentence structures. I know that this section will help me be a better teacher because it covered all the bases. Having knowledge of the sentence structure will help me be able to thoroughly explain the complex language of English.

This section was completely humbling and required a lot more focused effort and attention. Obviously much of the content was known already, but because english is my native tongue the majority of it is taken for granted. So, after reading the content once, I decided I wasn't comfortable enough with just learning it at face value and decided to re-do the chapter 3 or 4 more times for that reason.
When it comes to content, I have been able to further break down a common sentence into its proper structure, ie. by identifying the noun, adjectives, objects, subjects, verbs, adverbs, pronouns, articles, etc. There were a lot more sub-sections and rules than I had previously been aware of. For example, the difference between transitive verbs and intransitive verbs.However, I am still confused why some transitive verbs can be used as intransitive verbs, but still warrant the definition of transitive. As with the rest of this unit, practicing identifying and construction sentences with their appropriate components will only help clarify it more and more.
I feel like the task sheet at the end of the unit was extremely helpful in making sure I could break a sentence down and identify all of it's structure. Also, this unit has given me a different approach to the topic, making me realize just how multi-dimensional the topic is, especially when you aren't raised with english as your first language.

This unit covers the basic parts of speech. Anyone that plans on teaching English needs to understand the meaning of these words and how to teach them. I have been teaching English for 3 year and didn't find this too difficult but I did realize I have never used the phrase 'personal pronoun.' It provides an overview for the parts of speech which i is very helpful in refreshing m grammar particularly breaking it down into each part. Most of this unit was review for me. I was already familiar with all these parts of the sentence. I thought it was interesting that the unit covered countable vs. uncountable nouns. I only recently ran across the concept myself, when I tried to figure out if one could say "multiple correspondence"" or ""correspondences" I pretty much read a page or two then jumped to the test. This is all basic stuff and very simple. I look forward to learning more about the different strategies to deal with students who speak little or no English. After going through this unit, I have been able to better clarify my own understanding of the language that I have used my entire life. It is the logical core of the language and whilst I need to become better with certain terms it was a great refresher of concepts that I have not studied in years.

Unit 2 covers basic definitions, usages, and examples of the parts of speech. It also includes a helpful table of irregular verbs that students will need to memorize since there are no rules guiding their tenses.
I could recognize most of the parts of speech without much problem but some would be more difficult since they aren't discussed as often. Gerunds, transitive, and intransitive verbs are the ones I do not think about specifically. At first I wasn't sure what auxiliary verbs were but after reading the lesson I realized that I know what they are, I was just taught them as "helping verbs"" instead.
