In this lesson I learned the qualities that make a person a good teacher. I also learned the many different roles a teacher has in the classroom. As I was reading that particular session, I imagined how I would be in those roles and highlighted/noted the areas I would need to work on, and the areas I am already good at. I also learned about what makes a learner a good learner, and the different factors that go into learning, such as age, motivation levels, and past learning experiences. I looked at how age affects learning and thought about how I would teach little kids opposed to adult learners, and which I would like best/which I would be better at. In my notes I was sure to write the comparisons so that when I look for jobs I will be more prepared for whatever age I choose.

Part two if this Unit focuses on the learner and the characteristics that portrait a good learner (i.e.- willingness to learn, desire to ask questions, acceptance of errors, etc.). Also, the different ages of language learners and the associated challenges that come with each age group are addressed. Part 2 of Unit 1 also defines the various distinctions between the multiple levels of English language understanding by learners (including how the Council of Europe States breakdown their definitions into their Common european Framework). In this unit I learned about different types of students and different types of teachers. I have been a student for far longer than I have taught, thus for me it was interesting to match up the different teaching styles with many different teachers I have had. This lesson made it clear that to be a good teacher one must embody all the different styles when it is necessary, but I find certain elements make for a great teacher, in my opinion. As someone who has struggled with many foreign languages it was also interesting to read the theories and explanations this chapter provided about students. I hope that my students are motivated and willing to try anything to learn English.

This section dealt mainly with what it means to be an effective teacher and a good student. It appears the two are dependent upon each other. Effective learning does not occur unless the teacher provides a meaningful lesson with good classroom management. It is mainly the teacher's responsibility to ensure that all students are on task, that they are listening and that they are participating. Likewise, if students come to class with a good attitude about learning, this also facilitates teacher effectiveness. Teachers have many roles that include being facilitators, accessors, models, managers, and prompters. Teachers must have good judgment about when and where to take on each role. Often, those roles of teachers can be utilized concurrently depending on the learners and the learning styles present in the classroom.

This was a good introduction to the course and sets out the parameters for both teachers and learners so as to make it easier to identify each category. In addition, it also highlights some of the ways in which teachers can influence learners to gain more from their studies whilst also highlighting some of the common mistakes that teachers can make. I learnt a lot from this module as it helped to focus my mind on how teachers and learners differ and how much difference a teacher can make to a subject. Thinking back to my own school days, I can recall those teachers who made an otherwise dry subject, that much more interesting and also those teachers who put minimal effort into teaching and the classroom chaos that ensued.

From this unit i discovered for myself some new terminology and teaching methods. It was really useful for me to know the differencies between diverse roles of the teacher in the classroom. In future I'll be able to conduct all the proposed roles while holding a lesson, and now I'm aware which approach/role I should implement in exact moment of a lesson. Also I have restored in the memory some techniques to motivate students.

After learning this unit, I have got a clear knowledge of being a good teacher and a good learner. After reviewing this unit, I feel it is going to be very challenging to explain to students the different parts of speech used in various sentences and dialogues. There are many different parts of speech and it can sometimes be hard to determine what part is the noun, adjective, adverb, gerund, etc. I will use the information I learned here to create various exercises for my students, in which I will start off teaching them basic sentences and breaking apart the parts of speech within it. Once they are comfortable, I will create more complex sentences in which they have to determine the parts of speech.

A lot of information at once, but easy to handle if you read a couple of times. I had no idea how complicated the English language can be. There is no way that I'll be able to remember absolutely everything from this lesson, therefore I'll have to go back to the readings once in a while to try to remember what I read.
