I expected to need some of these skills but was interested in the range required and the reasons why these are important. The unit also talked about students levels of ability and motivation. It confirmed to me the value of the relationship between learner and teacher.

Teachers have many roles in the classroom and need to be able to take them all on, often many of them in a single lesson. From manager to observer to participant, a good teacher should be able to switch fluidly and easily. They should also be kind and understanding, able to help students without intimidating them, and able to motivate them. A good learner will reflect that and not be afraid to ask questions, but also show a deep interest in learning the language. Teachers must also be sensitive to the culture of the students as well as their ability and able to observe them and make adjustments where needed to keep them engaged, but still learning new things.

This unit covers what makes a good teacher, what makes a good student, the different roles of a teacher, the spectrum of the levels of English a student has, and the different challenges/benefits the teacher may face with young learns and older learners. This was a very interesting unit. Though much of the information is intuitive and easy to understand, it is important to point it out and be aware of it, such as cultural sensitivities or the fear of a student making a mistake in class. If addressed both could encourage a student to move forward in their learning, but if neglected could make a student not want to participate, 'shut down' in class, or even stop him/her from attending class. It was also important to understand what makes a good teacher. Knowledge is not everything. In fact, desire to teach, warmth, and patience are paramount to succeeding as a teacher.

Nor is it the most affective way to evaluate the learning level of each student. Being aware of and incorporating these different roles are essential in creating an engaging learning environment. Furthermore the category of leathers you will teach and how best to create strategies to teach these levels. Lastly it also taught me we have to look at the country and culture of how leathers and how that affects the classroom. I feel the main thing that I will take from this unit, is the reinforcement of what I believe to be true about teaching and that is, to not always be the one trying to get a word in "edge wise"". This section is important because you should know what the basic roles of a teacher is and which role to use for certain activities. The second section talks about the qualities of a learner. For example, what makes a good learner and that age can play a big role in how they learn. Students ages 13-18 may be very difficult because they might be unmotivated to learn and will less risks to use the language. But, younger students are okay with making mistakes. The last section of unit talks about the different language levels. Beginners will have no or little prior language of the secondary language. Upper intermediate will be able to communicate well using the language but not be as accurate. Overall this is a very important unit because it shows that a good teacher will usually have good students.

I believe this unit gave a good foundation for the whole course. The discussion on the basic aspects of this course will be helpful in the future units as it provides us course-takers the key information as to what qualities we should possess, and what roles we must be able to switch in to, given the chance to teach English to students. Although I have previously studied parts of speech in a university class, this unit offered clearer explanations than those in my class, which helped to clarify and reiterate the important points relating to each part of speech. This unit
offers various kinds of nouns, adjectives, articles, verbs, adverbs, gerunds, pronouns, and prepositions and conjunctions. The noun has 5 types (common, proper, compound, abstract, and collective). It corresponds with the use of appropriate articles or plural forms. For example, the word ?beauty? is a concept, or intangible object. So, this word is considered as an uncountable noun and thus cannot be pluralized. Adjectives describe or explain nouns. The form of adjective can be changed to create comparative or superlative forms. Except for several adjectives, such as ?beautiful,? adjectives usually take ?-er? for comparative and ?-est? for superlative forms. Verbs can be categorized into transitive and intransitive verbs. The former takes an object (or objects) and the latter does not. Also, each verb can be changed depending on the time. For example, the verb ?play? becomes ?played? in the past tense. Verbs can become nouns called gerunds. Generally, adverbs add more information to actions. If a sentence takes a transitive verb, an adverb is placed after an object. If it is an intransitive verb, an adverb is placed after the verb. Pronouns have 4 types (personal, possessive, reflexive, and relative). A possessive pronoun plus noun can be replaced by a possessive pronoun (i.e. my cat can be expressed as ?
Mine?). Prepositions can indicate where, when, and how actions occur. For example, ?by 5 p.m.? can mean some actions are completed by 5 p.m. Conjunctions can address the relationship between groups in a sentence and sentences.

This unit sought to explain various parts of speech that are used in the English Language. Even though the unit was presented and written in a very simple way, I found myself, as a native English speaker, having to sometimes read some explanations multiple times. In going through this course I once again came to the realisation of how difficult the English Language can be. Through this unit I am able to come to a better understanding of the frustrations of my students and am finally clear that even though it seems straight forward to us as native speakers, the language is actually quite complex and will take time for a non-native speaker to grasp.

I learned the many different parts of speech and how a sentence is put together the correct way. It was interesting because the more you learn about your own language and how it's set up, the easier you can learn a foreign language. I learned what a gerund was (a word I've never even heard of until now) and what an auxiliary verb was (something my
german teacher always talked about and never understood what he meant).

In this unit I read about the parts of speech. It was a good refresher on the functions of the words I use everyday. I was reminded of the basic English sentence structure. I also brushed up on my lesser-known parts of speech such as, transitive and intransitive verbs, and reflexive pronouns. It will serve me in the future when teaching beginner students these parts of speech.
