Being that I have experience teaching english as a second language in China, during this unit, I was able to recognize some things that I have done within my classes. That being the case, they must have been correct. I've also been able to view the teaching and learning process from both vantage points of being a teacher and being the learner. This unit also confirmed so things which I have witnessed first hand while teaching
chinese students. It was very difficult for me to get them to voluntarily speak in class.
NOTE: From my understanding, question mumber 10 here should have the answer of 'Low/Pre Intermediate', however, it is not given as a choice.

In this unit I learned the basics of what makes a good teacher. A good teacher is important for the success of the class/ student. To be a successful teacher, one must be kind and caring as well as passionate about teaching and the students. Being a model is important as well, as the students use you as an example when learning a language. This unit also discussed the difference between
young learners and adults. Some of the main differences include learning skills and attention span. Adults might be easier to teach in that they are more motivated to learn and are there for a reason. There are still challenges with teaching adults, in that they have developed their own methods of learning and as a teacher you want to make sure you are reaching out to everyone equally. Overall being positive and motivated to teach is important above everything else.

This unit differentiated between the roles of a good teacher and a good learner. It highlighted some aspects of both and also talked about how the two effect each other. As I was reading through this unit, I thought a lot about the
tefl teachers and foreign students at UCSD that I had the privilege of

In this lesson, I have learned what it means to be a good teacher. Not only should the teacher have knowledge of the subject he/she is teaching but he/she also needs to have the right attitude and personality to go along with the knowledge. Also, the focus should not be just on the teacher; the students must have equal opportunity in the classroom to make them feel supported and cared for. It is important to be cognitive of the way you speak, listen and treat your students. English as a second language for many will be difficult. This course unit examined some of those reasons. This first lesson had a lot to do with the student teacher relationship and ways of developing and fostering respect between the two roles in the class. After seeing a variety of characteristics for both good learners and good teachers the roles that a teacher fills becomes a way of atoning for the inevitable shortcomings of a the learner that will be encountered. An understanding of the roles is not enough, a teacher must know when to employ these roles so that they can be most effective for the student. I feel that the main thing to take away from this lesson is about the relationship that the teacher should have with the learner. They must be attentive and self-critical at times to know what is
working and what needs to change to benefit the learner.

It was good to know what to do for each level's students overall. Now I want to know how to actually be a good teacher to make students satisfied. I should think more ways to motivate students and organize myself as a teacher that has various roles. It seems difficult to play the all roles. It'll take a while. As I have been thinking, teaching is not just giving the knowledge of the subject. There are a lot of things that we can learn and practice as a teacher.

The two units covered so far have informed me about the structure of the programme and highlighted the challenges of becoming a teacher. I have learnt about a general attitude to people from all ages regarding them as learners. This unit defined the characteristics of good learners and good teachers. It described the various roles that a teacher has throughout a lesson. The various levels of language learners were listed, broken down by age,and characteristics of each level were shown. Factors that influence learners such as motivation and nervousness were discussed. What I found most interesting was the levels that language learners are divided into, and the characteristics of each subgroup that included their motivation, experiences, and behaviors.

In this lesson I learned the basics of what makes an effective teacher as well as the varied roles a teacher often has to take in the classroom. Overall, an effective teacher should be knowledgable, entertaining, kind, patient, and show genuine interest in the subject/their students' learning. An effective teacher should also be able to keep all student involved and engaged in a classroom and provide his or her students with timely, frequent, and constructive feedback on their performances. An effective teacher is aware of and proficient at the varied roles he or she must take in a classroom. These roles are: Manager/Controller, Organizer, Assessor, Facilitator/Resource, Prompter, Participant, Tutor, Model, and Monitor. A balance of these nine roles is vital to ensure a productive, enjoyable learning environment for the students.
I also learned about what makes a good learner, and the differences between learners of various skill/age levels. In general, good learners are motivated, willing to listen, acceptive constructive criticism, and are never afraid to ask questions. However, learners often have different strengths/weaknesses depending on their skill/age level. In general, younger learners are not as skilled as older learners. Younger learners also usually have shorter attention spans and are easily distracted. However, younger learners are usually better at participating and asking questions than older learners. Older learners are usually there by their own accord and are therefore highly motivated. However, older learners are often more hesitant to attempt to speak and participate than younger learners. Skill wise, learners are often broken up into six skill categories: Beginner, Elementary, Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, Upper Intermediate, and Advanced. These skill varying skill levels include everything from the most basic, limited English speaker to someone who is almost completely fluent. Lastly, I learned about different students motivations behind learning English. These include future career opportunities, travel, academic achievement, and natural interest in the language.

Unit 1 examined basic information about teachers and learners. It listed several qualities of a good teacher. Some of these relate to the personality of the teacher and some relate to interactions between the teacher and the students. I believe that a good teacher must love teaching. This will ensure that the teacher will enjoy the
job and
work hard to try to help every student succeed in the class. A good teacher must also have subject knowledge. You cannot teach what you do not know. I also believe that having a pleasant personality and good interaction with the class is very important. This would allow the students to feel comfortable in the class. They would enjoy coming to class and would be better motivated to learn. The unit also discussed the many roles of a teacher and appropriate times to use each one. A good teacher will employ the various roles at different times to achieve the desired result for the students.
Unit 1 also discussed qualities of a good learner. I believe the most important quality is a desire to learn. Students who possess this quality will be motivated which will result in other desirable qualities. They will be engaged in the learning process, asking questions and accepting needed correction because of their desire to master the material.
The unit also taught levels of language ability, differences you might find between
young learners and adults, and several reasons someone might choose to study English.

I thought this unit was a very interesting basic understanding of the roles of the teacher and the student -and what it meant to be those individuals. I found it very interesting to see a physical break down of reasons why students of all ages would be nervous about speaking english. Although small, I would say what I took from this unit the most is thinking more about what kind of teacher I would want to be. Since I am a huge believer in student centered learning I found I connected with the role of the organizer, accessor, tutor, and prompter. I also love the role of participant -just to put everyone on a level playing field, if you will; so there is a sense of unity between the teacher and the students.

I felt the content of this unit was very informative,important and useful to learn how to build a good and solid relationship between the student and the teacher. I feel that the way a teacher make the students feel is the key to a good learning. There should be always trust and good communication. The unit informs us about several important roles a teacher has in the class, types of levels of English proficiency and the ways to evaluate it. I have learnt about the importance of taking into consideration student's local culture. I have read about the reasons students may be motivated to learn a foreign language as well. There are many different styles of teaching and should be used together, not focused on just one style, for an engaging and successful classroom. Also, there are core differences in teaching different ages that a teacher should be aware of, both for the things that will be easier and more difficult.

I think I may have been too limited in my view of who takes courses in English, and why. The age rane of learners, of course, can be from birth into old age. As well, I know I was too limited in my idea of a teacher's role. I would like to imagine myself using a variety of methods to teach classes, including fun games and moments when I join in and bond with the class.

Firstly, I covered nouns, countable and uncountable, proper, and pronouns. Secondly, I covered adjectives which describe nouns. I read about where adjectives are placed, and how to create comparative and superlative sentences. I appreciated the example lesson for comparative and superlative. I will use it in my own classroom when covering this topic. Thirdly, I covered verbs, transitive and intransitive. It didn't occur to me that some transitive verbs can also be intransitive depending on their placement in the sentence. I read over a giant list of irregular verbs in their present, past, past participle, and present participle. Fourthly, I covered adverbs and their placement in a sentence depending if the verb is transitive or intransitive. I reviewed gerunds and prepositions. I recalled that my English teacher had taught prepositions by saying they are anywhere a mouse can go. I was mildly overwhelmed as to how I would teach all of this, but I remembered that I wouldn't be teaching everything here at once or in one day and could come up with solutions and examples for everything with a little thought.

This unit discussed parts of speech which make up the English language. Subjects and objects, such as nouns and gerunds, combined with verbs combine to form sentences. These core words of the simple sentence are often supported with descriptive words like adjectives and adverbs, and strung together with conjunctions, prepositions, and articles that further specify the meaning of the sentence. As a native speaker, all of this is second nature to me and it is useful to view my language from the building block perspective of the language learner.

In this unit, the first grammar unit of the course, I have gained a grasp of some of the basic grammar principles needed to teach English grammar. My prior knowledge of grammar included some of the content but I feel that the unit acted as a refresher and allowed for me to learn the distinction between various types of nouns, articles, verbs/adverbs and adjectives. I found it useful to learn the differences between regular and irregular verbs in relation to grammar points such as the past participle. I also came across the term "gerund"" for the first time as it describes the use of the -ing form of the verb as a noun. I also found the note on page 16 about the ""Adverb Game"" to be useful and will try that in a future lesson. I understand that a knowledge of grammar will not only help me become a better teacher but also increase my student's confidence in my abilities."

Unit 2 covered a wide range of parts of speech in the area of grammar. It focused on various fomrs of nouns (eg. usage, main types, plurals, countable nouns,and uncountable nouns). It discussed the various forms of Articles and Verbs, and also gave examples of when and how to use Adverbs. The most important section for me was the Verb section. It helped me to better understand the proper usage of transitive verbs, intrasnitive verbs, and infinitives.

As a native speaker, I often times am not in need of knowing the grammar of a specific sentence because I know the context and grew up with the correct usage. This lesson was able to specify the grammar points in a way that will allow me to explain the nuances of verbs such as occurring and happening based on the different emphases on the letters and spelling differences. I also enjoy the tables given to me in the materials with the various verb tenses and usages. I am sure they will be a good reference during my teaching career.
