In Unit 7 I have learned when teaching new language the difficulty or ease of learning is dependent on the similarity to the student's own language, similarity to English words already known, spelling and pronunciation, and appropriacy. Grammatical structures are straight forward; knowing which are important to learn and know is easy but not in the case of vocabulary. Particular vocabulary to know is generally more vague when teaching English as a second language. Selecting vocabulary is reliant on appropriacy to the student or task, the frequency or use in English, where the word belongs grammatically, how it interacts and effects other words, and the spelling and pronunciation. The same ESA technique models can be used with teaching vocabulary like grammar; engage, study, activate.
