This unit covered if/when sentences which refer to past, present, and future possibilities and are known as conditionals. A zero conditional is a fact that cannot be denied. A first conditional discusses a real situation in the future once the condition has been satisfied. A second conditional discusses an unreal hypothetical situation that is and never will be true. A third conditional refers to a hypothetical past action and a hypothetical result. A mixed conditional is usually a mix of second and third conditionals, a hypothetical past action and the hypothetical present consequence. Also covered were reported and direct speech. Direct speech is literal speech reported in the present tense, while reported speech is reported in the past tense with the verb tenses changed appropriately.
