Interestingly, we never learned our tenses in school, except in French. In English it was just assumed that we knew them and could use them. After completing this module, I suspect it probably would have helped if we had learned them and could explain ourselves when choosing a specific past tense form. However, I think most of us can use the past tense fine without explaining it because the different forms and their implications have been engendered in our minds and language over decades of use. ESL students, without that advantage, are faced with the daunting task of having to understand English grammar and tenses before they can use them. I don't envy them, especially considering all the accompanying vernacular. I wonder if there is a way to explain it without the difficult terminology.
