When considering the vocabulary and rules of grammar, the teacher must be prepared to balance essential knowledge central to the structure of the language (the trunk) as well as the fruit of that structure (the leaves and branches). Grammar serves as the trunk upon which our language develops. Vocabulary is the branch and leaves of the tree. We must make sure that students have enough to order their language use around our common language use (i.e. they have to know the general rules used in everyday English). They must also have enough knowledge to craft sentences. If they were to only know of English in theory, but know no extensive vocabulary, they would grow frustrated. To that end, the teacher must have the appropriate focus on what parts of grammar and vocabulary items to introduce.
