There are four basic skills in English as any other languages. Receptive skills--reading and listening; productive skills--speaking and writing. This unit is focus on teaching receptive skills. Basically, we read and listen mainly for two reasons-- for a purpose and for entertainment.There are five skills that readers and listeners will apply when they are reading or listening--predictive skills,specific information-scanning, general idea-skimming, detailed information and deduction from context. Before classes, teachers should choose suitable contexts based on a variety of topics (over a period of time), engage students and go over difficult/unknown languages and structures. teachers also need to provide comprehension tasks that promote understanding in a receptive skills teaching class.
