Unit 5 focused on the management of the classroom. Particular attention was given to eye contact and gestures, the arrangement of the classroom, teacher and student talk time, and how to build rapport with students. The last topic, establishing rapport with students, was especially helpful. A few practical ways that I can build rapport are: letting the students correct each other, using pair and group-work activities, and looking as if I enjoy the job. While I have taught in the past and utilized some of these tactics, it was beneficial for me to have so many concretized in the unit. I now understand how important establishing rapport is for managing the classroom in a disciplinary way, but also for setting the atmosphere so that students are more willing to participate and enjoy learning.
