This unit covers pronunciation. There are many parts to pronunciation, and lots of teachers and materials ignore several of the parts. Stress is sometimes covered but rhythm and intonation are often ignored. Intonation is an especially important skill to teach to students from a tonal background such as Chinese. Teaching these skills can be quite difficult, but the unit provides a good starting point in terms of resources and lists of considerations when planning a lesson. The unit discusses stress, rhythm, and intonation before discussion the more basic phonetics. Basic production of the proper sounds is easier to drill and work on. More advanced concepts get more complicated because the same sentence can be said in multiple ways depending on the implications the speaker wishes to include.
