Admittedly, this was not the most engaging lesson. I can definitely see the importance of teaching pronunciation, stress, and intonation. Certainly this is an area where I haven't focused much as a language learner, and as a result, I have made many communication errors in those languages. So, it is important to give students a thorough training in this area. I'm not sure how much I would use the international phonetic alphabet, but maybe that's because I'm teaching children. In my mind, it would only serve to confuse my current students. I want my students to pick up on the language naturally by imitation and use, not by trying to remember some obscure alphabet. But, I can see where it would be a good tool to teach older students so they can learn new words on their own using a dictionary.
