This unit was based on receptive skills which are reading and listening. Reading and listening are equally important skills and are used for a variety of reasons such as to achieve a specific goal or for entertainment. Either way there are a variety of specialist skills that are required to listen or read effectively. These skills include predictive skills, the ability to scan for information, skim the text to get a general idea and look for detailed information. In this lesson I learned that to successfully teach receptive skills you must choose material that interests and motivates students. It is important to vary this material so as to suit all students in the classroom. Furthermore, it is important to preteach complex vocabulary and sentence structures help promote understanding.
