The focus of this unit was the various kinds of tests an English as a foreign language student might encounter. Reviewed were the types of tests a teacher would be expected to provide, such as a progress test to determine absorption of information or a diagnostic test to help make the lessons and materials for the rest of the course. Also mentioned were external exams, which the teacher may need to prepare students for if they want to study or work in a foreign country. Many students in Japan value practice for the TOEIC. Currently working as an assistant teacher, one can see a desire in many students to have a high score in order to study abroad and find good employment. Regardless of personal feelings on testing, it's clear that that tests play an important role in class for many students.
