Teach English in Shangba TujiAzu XiAng - Zunyi Shi
In Unit 11: Teaching Receptive Skills, we learnt the different motives for reading and listening; how to tackle potential problems that arise when students read/listen to a text; and we were given an outline for a patchwork lesson about Elvis Presley's life. There are two main motives for reading/listening to a text: 1) for a purpose (example: instructions on how to set-up a new TV) 2) for entertainment (example: reading a novel by your favourite author). In order to understand a text there are several skills to be considered: predictive skills; specific-scanning; general idea-skimming; detailed information; and deduction from context. I would agree that it is VERY important that students find the material and vocabulary interesting when they are working on their reading and listening skills!
